A group of black teens were filmed beating Asian students on a Philadelphia train Wednesday.
Police are investigating the altercation that was caught on film, showing a group of black girls confronting passive Asian American train passengers, at which point an Asian girl walks up to them and gets pummeled.
In the video, the teens slap the Asian girl in her face, pull at her face mask, then push her toward a train door which one girl pounds her head against before the girl falls onto the floor. The teens then proceed to attack her indiscriminately, pulling at her hair, punching and kicking her and hitting her with a shoe.
Meanwhile, no other riders on the train stepped in to help the victim.
NBC10 Philadelphia originally claimed they were “not showing the video out of respect for the victims,” then later edited their explanation to claim that “a friend of the victim requested that we remove it due to its traumatic nature.”

FOX 29’s Steve Keeley reports that the group of teens first targeted a group of Asian male students aboard an express train in Olney on Tuesday. Sources tell FOX 29, the members of the attacking group are alleged to have hurled racial slurs at the Asian teens from Central High School and dumped a smoothie on them Tuesday – one day prior to the incident that was caught on video.
The torment reportedly continued on Wednesday when Keeley reports the same group assaulted at least one of the Asian students. Video shared on social media appears to show a female Asian student trying to break up the conflict when the group turns the violence on her.
A spokesperson for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) described the incident as “violent and disturbing.”
Meanwhile, SEPTA police said they identified the attackers, all of whom are under 17, adding they’d face charges ranging from ethnic intimidation to aggravated assault.
The state of Pennsylvania uses the term “ethnic intimidation” instead of “hate crime,” according to Pennsylvania law group Fishman Firm.
The mother of one of the attackers admitted her daughter was the aggressor and that the Asian students appeared to have done nothing wrong.
“My daughter and her group were the full aggressors,” she said. “If the Asian children did anything, I would think that it was to protect themselves and that’s just what I got from the video.”
“We’re all apologetic…We are embarrassed, ashamed. It’s not who we represent.”
The mom added that as a Muslim, her daughter should have shown better discernment.
“As you can clearly see in the video, my daughter is Muslim,” she said. “We do not carry ourselves that way. We carry ourselves with respect, modesty and humility.”
In the meantime, SEPTA says they’ve worked to provide the students a safe way home.
The attack comes after another horrible incident on a SEPTA train last month, in which a 35-year-old man assaulted and raped a female passenger as other riders stood idly by and did nothing to help the victim.
