Oregon HS Track Coach Calls for End to Mask Rule After Athlete Collapses

A high school track coach in Oregon is calling for an end to rules mandating mask-wearing during competition after one of his athletes collapsed from “complete oxygen debt.”
After a nearly two-year break from track meets, high schools in Oregon once again began competing, but the state added a new rule, requiring students to wear masks at all times, even when competing in sports.
While excited to get back to competition, Summit coach Dave Turnbull was <a href="https://www.bendbulletin.com/sports/prep-track-and-field-an-800-meter-school-record-and-masks-at-forefront-of-first/article_d6ec7a0e-a3b9-11eb-a828-a7609f73a931.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">not thrilled</a>about the masks, according to The Bulletin.
The biggest problem for the coach and his runners came in the 800-meter race when student Maggie Williams collapsed on the track just meters short of the finish line even as she was on the verge of achieving a school record.
“I was pushing so hard and everything went blurry and I just fell,” Williams told The Bulletin. “But luckily I fell at the right spot and crossed the line with my head.”
This end to Williams’ race worried coach Turnbull. He blamed his runner’s collapse on the mask.

‘Democracy is not Coca-Cola’: Beijing says US shouldn’t assume that representative government ‘tastes’ the same all over the world

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Washington to abandon its ideological approach to foreign policy, arguing that it is wrong of the US to try to model the rest of the world in its own image.
Speaking with the US Council on Foreign Relations via video link on Friday, Wang offered a series of suggestions that he said would improve bilateral relations between the two nations. He called on the US to seek peaceful coexistence with Beijing and accept that China has chosen an independent path and system. 
“Democracy is not Coca-Cola, which, with the syrup produced by the United States, tastes the same across the world. The world will be lifeless and dull if there is only one single model and one single civilization,” the senior Chinese diplomat noted. 
He said that it was wrong to describe China as “authoritarian” because the country’s democracy “takes a different form than that of the United States.” At the same time, Washington should refrain from using democracy and human rights as a pretext to meddle in other countries’ internal affairs or provoke confrontation that can lead to “turmoil or disaster,” Wang said. 
The foreign minister accused the former US administration under Donald Trump of “disrupting the international system”and walking away from Washington’s global obligations and responsibilities. He said that Beijing welcomes the Joe Biden administration’s “return to multilateralism.”
Beijing and Washington continue to lock horns over a range of economic, political and military issues, ranging from the trade war started by the Trump administration, to territorial disputes in the South China Sea. 
For China, US interference in its internal affairs has become a regular topic of protest. Last month, the Chinese Foreign Ministry questioned the legitimacy of the US, Canada, the EU and the UK proclaiming themselves “human rights judges,”after the Western states sanctioned Beijing officials over alleged rights abuses against the country’s Uighur Muslim population.

Biden Stops Fining Illegal Aliens Who Do Not Depart U.S., Cancels Their Debt

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stopped fining illegal aliens who refused to depart the United States, the agency revealed.
In an announcement on Friday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that the agency has stopped issuing fines to illegal aliens who refused to depart the U.S. despite previously stating that they would depart.
Former President Trump, with the authority of the Immigration and Nationality Act, finally started requiring the federal government in 2018 to issue fines to illegal aliens who refused to depart the U.S. after the provision failed to be enforced for more than 20 years.
As Breitbart News reported at the time, the Trump administration <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/immigration/2019/07/03/trump-administration-fining-illegals-500000-for-refusing-to-leave/"> started fining</a> illegal aliens up to $500 every day they refused to depart the U.S. In some cases, illegal aliens racked up fines of close to $500,000 for violating federal immigration law.
Mayorkas, in a statement, said DHS has rescinded the use of fines on illegal aliens, claiming the authorized policy is not effective in deterring illegal immigration. DHS stopped issuing the fines on January 20 but had not announced the policy change until Friday.

<h4>President Trump has slammed the efforts of Arizona Democrats to try and stop the forensic audit of the over 2 million ballots from Maricopa County that started on Friday.</h4>
<a href="https://nationalfile.com/breaking-arizona-judge-orders-temporary-halt-to-maricopa-forensic-audit-after-democrat-lawsuit/">National File reported</a> that Arizona Democrats <a href="https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/20689079/az-dem-party-v-fann-complaint.pdf">filed a lawsuit late Thursday night</a>, in an attempt to stop the forensic audit currently taking place in Maricopa County. They argued that the private firm hired by Republican Senate President Karen Fann to carry out the audit, Cyber Ninjas, was not qualified to conduct the audit, and that they were ironically concerned about the integrity of the audit. They also noted that the CEO of the company, Doug Logan, supported the “Stop the Steal” efforts, insinuating that he would not perform the audit properly.
<a href="https://gab.com/realdonaldtrump/posts/106116553683389021">In a statement,</a> President Trump slammed the Arizona Democrats for what he saw as a blatant attempt to ensure the “large scale voter fraud” of the 2020 election was not uncovered, arguing that they sent their lawyers to Maricopa “in an effort to stop this recount and full transparency because THEY KNOW WHAT THEY DID”:

The forensic audit in Maricopa is still taking place, after the Arizona Democrats <a href="https://nationalfile.com/breaking-arizona-judge-orders-temporary-halt-to-maricopa-forensic-audit-after-democrat-lawsuit/">refused to put up the $1 million bond</a>ordered by Superior Court Judge Chris Coury, who would otherwise have halted the audit from 5PM Friday until 12PM on Monday. Coury ordered the Democrats to pay the bond in order to cover any rise in costs due to the halt, <a href="https://azdem.org/release-statement-from-the-chair-of-the-arizona-democratic-party-on-todays-hearing/">but the party chair, Raquel Terán, said</a> that they would “not risk our supporters’s hard-earned dollars.”

Breast-fed Baby passes away after being poisoned by Mother who had taken the Pfizer Covid Vaccine

A five-month-old baby has tragically died after becoming seriously ill within hours of his mother receiving a dose of the experimental Pfizer / BioNTech Covid vaccine.
The incident was reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Recording System (the USA’s version of the MHRA Yellow Card scheme in the UK) on the 4th April by the clinician who had attempted to save the life of the baby just a couple of weeks earlier.
The report (which can be found <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.medalerts.org/vaersdb/findfield.php" target="_blank">here</a> using VAERS ID – 1166062) details that the mother of the baby received a second dose of the Pfizer jab on the 17th March whilst at work. But the next day her five-month-old breast-fed infant developed a rash and was inconsolable. The baby refused to eat and developed a fever.
The Doctor who made the report describes how the mother brought the extremely ill child to the local Emergency Room where assessments were carried out. It was discovered the baby had elevated liver enzymes. The infant remained in hospital for treatment but tragically declined and passed away just two days later on the 20th March 2021.

The infant had no known allergies, birth defects, disabilities or pre-existing conditions, and was not exposed to anything other than the Pfizer vaccine via his mother’s breast milk.
The report also lists several other conditions that developed prior to the infant’s tragic death, on top of the elevated liver enzymes as detailed in the Doctor’s write up. Elevated liver enzymes indicate inflammation or damage to cells in the liver, and can be caused by alcohol or drug-misuse.
The five-month-old baby also developed thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. This is a condition that results in blood clots forming in small blood vessels throughout the body. This in turn results in a low platelet count and low red blood cells due to their breakdown. This then often causes kidney, heart, and brain dysfunction. This is the very condition which has been proven to be caused by the AstraZeneca viral vector “vaccine”. So it now looks like we have evidence the Pfizer jab can cause the same ailment.

No tests have been carried out to confirm whether or not any of the experimental Covid “vaccines” are safe for use during pregnancy or during breast-feeding. Sadly those silly enough to still get it are suffering the grave and tragic consequences of their actions with the deaths of either their unborn or newborn children.

Jakarta:
Southeast Asian leaders began a crisis meeting on Myanmar on Saturday aiming to persuade Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who led the military takeover that sparked turmoil in his country, to forge a path to end the violence.
The gathering of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta is the first coordinated international effort to ease the crisis in Myanmar, an impoverished country that neighbours China, India and Thailand. Myanmar is part of the 10-nation ASEAN.
With participants attending in person despite the pandemic, Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said on Friday that the summit reflected the "deep concern about the situation in Myanmar and ASEAN's determination to help Myanmar get out of this delicate situation".
It's unusual for the leader of a military government in Myanmar to attend an ASEAN summit - usually the country has been represented by a lower-ranked officer or a civilian. Min Aung Hlaing was seen disembarking after arriving on a special flight from Naypyitaw, the Myanmar capital, according to footage on the official video channel of Indonesia's presidential palace.
Leaders' cars later entered the ASEAN Secretariat in the Indonesian capital, the venue for the meeting.
About two dozen protesters gathered nearby, beating pots and pans and holding signs saying "Democracy for Myanmar" and "We stand against the military coup". Police quickly moved them on.
Several protests were also held in Myanmar's main cities but there were no immediate reports of violence.
Diplomats and government officials who asked not to be named said many ASEAN leaders want a commitment from Min Aung Hlaing to restrain his security forces, who monitors say have killed 745 people since a mass civil disobedience movement emerged to challenge his Feb. 1 coup against the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
"This is what Myanmar must avoid: geographical, political, social and national disintegration into warring ethnic parts," said Philippines Foreign Secretary Teddy Locsin on Twitter. "Myanmar on its own must find peace again."
Min Aung Hlaing, on his first foreign trip since the coup, will address the summit later on Saturday along with each of the participants before more informal discussions begin, said three sources familiar with procedures.
The summit will be held in a "retreat" format, with leaders sitting in a circle and only one or two officials assisting each one, said Usana Berananda, a Thai foreign ministry official.
Push For Dialogue
ASEAN officials and diplomats have also worked on an initiative to send a humanitarian aid mission to Myanmar and appoint an envoy to encourage dialogue between the junta and the ousted lawmakers and armed ethnic groups who have formed an opposition National Unity Government (NUG).
The leaders of Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and Brunei are at the meeting, along with the foreign ministers of Laos, Thailand and the Philippines.
ASEAN has a policy of consensus decision-making and non-interference in the affairs of its members, which include Myanmar.
While that makes it difficult to tackle contentious issues, the body is seen by the United Nations, China and the United States as best placed to deal with the junta directly.
"We in the [@UN] Security Council eagerly await the outcome of the @ASEAN meeting on Burma, which deserves serious and immediate attention," said U.S Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield on Twitter.
Still, some analysts warned of the dangers of giving legitimacy to the junta by inviting its leader to the summit.
"Formal representation of the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) at the ASEAN summit, without giving any concessions in return, including first and foremost a commitment to stop the bloodshed, is not constructive," Huong Le Thu, of the Australian Strategic Policy Initiative, wrote in an analysis of the ASEAN meeting.
A spokesman for the NUG, which is not attending the summit, told Reuters the group had "been in contact with ASEAN leaders".
Dr. Sasa, an international envoy for the NUG, who goes by one name, said ASEAN should insist the military stops killing civilians, halts the bombing of villages in ethnic minority areas, releases political prisoners and hands power to the NUG.

Colombo:
A new coronavirus strain that is airborne and more potent than all those found previously in Sri Lanka has been discovered in the island nation, according to a top immunologist in Colombo.
The variant, which is highly transmissible, can remain airborne for nearly an hour and is spreading fast, Neelika Malavige, the head of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Sciences of the Sri Jayawardenapura University said.
"This variant of coronavirus is more highly transmissible than all found so far in the island. The new strain is airborne, the droplets can remain airborne for nearly an hour," Malavige said.
Health authorities feared that the new variant is spreading rapidly after last week's New Year celebrations with more younger people getting infected.
"In the next two incubation periods, the disease can progress to a third wave," Upul Rohana, of the Public Health Inspectors said, adding that the real situation would emerge only in the coming 2-3 weeks.
Meanwhile, the ministry of COVID prevention issued new guidelines which would remain in force until May 31.
The guidelines dictate a 50 per cent capacity operation for most institutions with all forms of revelry being banned.
The country-wide cases which were around 150 before the mid-April New Year have now shot up to over 600 a day.
Sri Lanka is also running out of its health care capacity, officials said.
Sri Lanka, like many other nations, is witnessing a surge in the number of coronavirus cases, with the current figure standing at 99,691 cases and 638 deaths due to the disease.
Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena said hospitals still have enough ICU capacity to treat COVID-19 patients but it is more important that health guidelines are followed in order to avoid infection.
"Previously the symptoms were not very apparent. Now they are much more visible and young people are more likely to develop them," he said.
Those who have tested positive now develop more breathing difficulties, requiring ICU admission and oxygen, he said.
Sri Lanka is not the only nation to have witnessed new strain of COVID-19 but also other Asian nations such as India, Pakistan, Indonesia among others.

A recycled SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule with four astronauts aboard was speeding on its way to the International Space Station, where the spacecraft is set to dock early Saturday.
It was the third crew sent to the ISS by SpaceX, as part of its multibillion dollar contract with NASA, and the first time the company was reusing a rocket and spacecraft.
The Crew-2 mission, which includes the first European, Thomas Pesquet of France, blasted off from pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida before dawn on Friday.
"We're glad to be back in space," said mission commander Shane Kimbrough of the United States.
The Crew Dragon capsule, named Endeavour, is expected to dock with the ISS at 5:10 am (0910 GMT) Saturday. The hatch will open two hours after that.
Flying on used vehicles is a key cost-saving goal of NASA's partnerships with private industry.
Three white Teslas that whisked the astronauts to the launchpad bore license plates reading "recycle," "reuse," and "reduce" -- a nod to the fact that both the Falcon 9 booster and Endeavour were deployed on previous missions.
SpaceX's first crewed mission to the ISS launched last May, ending nine years of American reliance on Russian rockets for rides, following the end of the Space Shuttle program.
"I think we're at the dawn of a new era of space exploration," said SpaceX founder Elon Musk, who made a surprise appearance at the post-launch press conference.
The arrival of the space quartet -- which also includes American Megan McArthur and Japan's Akikho Hoshide -- will bring the number of people on the station to 11, as the Crew-2 team overlaps for a few days with Crew-1 astronauts, in addition to three Russian cosmonauts.
Major step for Europe
The launch is a major milestone for Europe, which named the mission "Alpha" after the star system Alpha Centauri.
"This is really the golden era for us in terms of exploitation of the International Space Station," Frank De Winne, head of ISS programs for the European Space Agency (ESA), told AFP.
Germany's Matthias Maurer and Italy's Samantha Cristoforetti are set to follow Pesquet on SpaceX missions, this fall and next spring respectively.
The next module of the ISS, built by Russia, should reach the station in July and will include a robotic arm built by ESA that Pesquet will help make operational, added De Winne.
ESA will also be a key partner to the United States in the Artemis program to return to the Moon, providing the power and propulsion component for the Orion spacecraft, and critical elements of a planned lunar orbital station called Gateway.
Science goals
The Crew-2 team has around 100 experiments in the diary during their six-month mission.
These include research into what are known as "tissue chips" -- small models of human organs that are made up of different types of cells and used to study things like aging in the immune system, kidney function and muscle loss.
In terms of the environment, by the time Crew-2 returns in fall, it will have taken 1.5 million images of the Earth, documenting phenomena like artificial lighting at night, algal blooms, and the breakup of Antarctic ice shelves.
Another important element of the mission is upgrading the station's solar power system by installing new compact panels that roll open like a huge yoga mat.

US State Department spokeswoman, Jalina Porter on Friday (local time) during a press briefing reaffirmed that US will work closely with India to facilitate movement of essential supplies during COVID-19 surge.
Informing about the update on India's request regarding US position on the embargo on lifting of raw materials for the vaccine, she said, "We have continued to work closely with India to facilitate the movement of essential supplies and also address the bottlenecks of their supply chains. But we'll also continue to collaborate with our partners in India to battle this at the highest level."
"We don't have any specific update to raw materials, but we'll just reiterate that we understand that the COVID situation in India remains a global concern," added Porter.
Earlier on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar regarding the lethal second COVID-19 wave in India.
"We know Secretary Blinken spoke to his counterpart on Tuesday, and we remain deeply engaged with India at all levels as we work to combat this crisis of the pandemic together, said Porter.
Earlier, India and South Africa had proposed to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to temporarily lift certain intellectual property barriers and allow countries to locally manufacture COVID-19 diagnostics and vaccines.

Sri Lanka's police Saturday arrested a top Muslim leader and member of parliament in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks that killed 279 people as pressure to speed up the investigation mounted.
Detectives took Rishad Bathiudeen, leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Party, into custody under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), police spokesman Ajith Rohana said.
He said Bathiudeen and his brother Riyaaj were arrested in pre-dawn raids on their homes in Colombo.
"They were arrested under the PTA based on circumstantial and scientific evidence that they had connections with the suicide bombers who carried out the attacks," Rohana said in a statement.
The arrests came three days after the head of Sri Lanka's Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Malcolm, accused the government of allowing investigations to stall.
Nearly 200 people were arrested within days of the suicide attacks on hotels and churches by local Islamist extremists, but no one has yet been charged.
Ranjith, who led commemorations on the second anniversary of the Easter attacks on Wednesday, said he was "deeply saddened" by the lack of progress in the investigation.
He renewed his call for swift action against the perpetrators and said "political posturing and the need to safeguard alliances" was hindering the probe.
MPs from Bathiudeen's party had provided crucial support to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in October to amend the constitution and give him wider powers over the judiciary and the legislature.

The Australian military has been reminded by MPs that its core mission is the “application of lethal violence” in response to concerns about it being too “woke” following a performance during which scantily clad dancers twerked on a Navy ship.
The advisory came after awkward scenes where young women gyrated suggestively in front of military officials, some of them elderly, during a ceremony to formally commission the Navy’s newest ship, a debacle that was dubbed a “shitshow” by one member of the government.
“We’re meant to be a fighting force,” he added, echoing comments by backbencher Phillip Thompson, who argued that the Australian Defence Force (ADF) had lurched “too far to the left” with its focus on social justice issues.
“Our ADF shouldn’t be left or right, they should be straight down the middle of what their job is, and their job is to defend our nation, our interests, our values, our sovereignty, but also when we go on operations, have an unapologetic aggression and violence to get the mission done,” said Thompson.

Noting that Navy standards should be higher, Thompson asserted, “We’ve got the CDF, we’ve got members of Parliament there, and the Governor-General’s there, I don’t think it’s appropriate to be twerking.”
Assistant Defence Minister Andrew Hastie was also prompted to reiterate the what the primary focus of the military should be, insisting that its core mission will always be the “application of lethal violence” and that “mission clarity” is a key component of their work.
Hastie said that when the “role, identity and purpose” of the military becomes confused it leads to weakness and could even be “deadly on the battlefield, at sea or in an aerial dogfight.”
“Inside government, there are frustrations over recent military decisions seen as too “politically correct”, such as a 2018 directive banning soldiers from wearing “death” symbols,” reports <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-14/military-reminded-lethal-violence-defend-australian-values/100066796">ABC Australia</a>.
The U.S. military really needs to learn from Australia’s approach given its current obsession with social justice, most recently exemplified by Joe Biden’s reversal of Trump’s ban on transgender troops.
So long as the U.S. military distracts itself with inane woke diversity nonsense, China will continue to laugh heartily in America’s face while accelerating and perfecting its own fighting capabilities.

The agencies instituted a <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/4/13/22381844/johnson-vaccine-pause-covid-19-clot-cerebral-venous-thrombosis">pause on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on April 13</a> after six cases of a rare type of blood clot leading to one fatality were reported in people who had received the shot. The injection has already been administered to 8 million people in the US.
By the time the advisory group to the CDC met on Friday, there had been 15 cases of blood clotting complications known to be associated with the vaccine, including three deaths. Seven of these patients remain hospitalized while five have been discharged.
“These cases are not just numbers to any of us, and we take them very seriously,” said <a href="https://www.jnj.com/leadership/chief-medical-officer-johnson-johnson">Joanne Waldstreicher</a>, the chief medical officer of Johnson & Johnson, during the meeting of advisers on Friday. “These are people.”
While these complications are serious, it’s also clear that they are extremely rare. This posed a challenge for regulators in how to handle the risks as well as how to communicate the concerns to the public without undermining vaccination efforts. So far, though, it seems Americans remain confident in Covid-19 vaccines.
Having a third vaccine back online in the US could help close gaps in vaccination, particularly since the Johnson & Johnson vaccine only requires one dose instead of the two needed for the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines. Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine is also cheaper and can be stored in ordinary refrigerators rather than freezers.
It’s also an important player in the global race to contain Covid-19. In addition to its lower costs and logistics requirements, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been shown to be effective against the new, more dangerous variants of the virus that causes Covid-19. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/22/world/south-africa-johnson-covid-vaccine.html">South Africa</a>, which is fighting a fast-spreading variant, decided to resume distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine this week after the country paused its own distribution campaign last week.
On balance, experts say the decision to pause distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to investigate these complications was the right one, but some argue that the decision to resume could have been made sooner, particularly given the continued onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The complication of concern here is known as <a href="https://mvec.mcri.edu.au/references/thrombosis-with-thrombocytopenia-syndrome/">thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome</a> (TTS), or <a href="https://www.hematology.org/covid-19/vaccine-induced-immune-thrombotic-thrombocytopenia">vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia</a> (VITT).
<a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/thrombocytopenia/symptoms-causes/syc-20378293">Thrombocytopenia</a> is a condition where platelets, blood cells that help form blood clots, drop to abnormally low levels in the bloodstream. That can lead to bruising and uncontrolled bleeding.
In the case of the Johnson & Johnson and the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines, it seems that the vaccines in very rare cases can trigger an autoimmune response. White blood cells form proteins called antibodies that normally target hostile invaders, but in these cases, antibodies are binding to <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2105385">proteins that trigger platelets to form clots</a>.
Those clots can spread throughout the body and have, alarmingly, been found in blood vessels leading away from the brain, a condition known as <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/cerebral-venous-sinus-thrombosis">cerebral venous sinus thrombosis</a>, or CVST. This can quickly turn deadly.
So the problem ends up being that so many platelets are consumed in making these unnecessary and dangerous blood clots that not enough are left over to form clots where they are actually needed.
That means that traditional treatments for clots like heparin, a blood thinner, won’t work here and could actually make the situation worse.
The blood clotting complications also mirror similar problems associated with the <a href="https://www.vox.com/22346789/astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-oxford-efficacy-results-nih-fda">AstraZeneca/Oxford Covid-19 vaccine</a>. Both of these vaccines use a <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/8/13/21359025/coronavirus-vaccine-covid-19-moderna-oxford-mrna-adenovirus">modified version of another virus</a> to deliver DNA instructions for making the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. It hints that there is a common mechanism at work.
But again, this is such a rare complication that only 15 cases were reported out of 8 million Johnson & Johnson shots. All of the cases were reported in women, with 13 TTS cases in those between the ages of 18 and 49 and two above the age of 50. Beyond warning young women to keep an eye out for any blood clot-related symptoms — headache, blurred vision, seizures, pain in the extremities, and a loss of control of the body — there’s not much health officials can offer in terms of screening vulnerable people.

“The benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risk, at least in the older population,” said <a href="https://professorships.jhu.edu/chair/robert-a-brodsky/">Robert Brodsky</a>, director of the hematology division at Johns Hopkins University.
And if patients are concerned about blood clots, Brodsky said the <a href="https://www.gavi.org/vaccineswork/serious-blood-clots-more-likely-covid-19-infection-vaccine">risk of clots from contracting Covid-19</a> is far, far greater than the likelihood of one occurring in the wake of a vaccine. “My concern is that this vaccine gets deep-sixed,” he said. “It’s a very effective vaccine.”
The recommendation to lift the pause of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine echoes a similar decision from the <a href="https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/covid-19-vaccine-janssen-ema-finds-possible-link-very-rare-cases-unusual-blood-clots-low-blood">European Medicines Agency</a> (EMA) — the European Union’s pharmaceuticals regulator — on Wednesday. The EMA also said that a warning about rare blood clots should be added to the list of side effects for the vaccine. (The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is often identified with the name of its subsidiary Janssen in Europe.)
One of the main fears with the pause on the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine was that it would undermine public trust in vaccines, but polls seem to show that’s not the case.
An April 14 poll of 600 adults found that 58 percent of respondents were more confident in Covid-19 vaccines after the pause.

Another poll on <a href="https://debeaumont.org/changing-the-covid-conversation/jj/">April 15</a> of 1,000 adults found that 36 percent of respondents saw no change in their likelihood of getting a vaccine and 40 percent said they were more likely to get a Covid-19 shot after the pause was announced. And a <a href="https://www.axios.com/axios-ipsos-poll-johnson-and-johnson-vaccine-pause-a4eefe38-6aca-4a7e-b1d1-02e1b01a3480.html">poll of 1,033 adults between April 16 and 19</a> found that 88 percent of respondents thought that the FDA and CDC were being responsible in pausing the Johnson & Johnson shot.
So it seems that most Americans were not fazed by the pause to review the vaccine, which was a relief for some observers.
“When I woke up that day, I was really depressed that they had paused the J&J vaccine rollout ... I thought that it would increase vaccine hesitancy,” said <a href="https://profiles.ucsf.edu/monica.gandhi">Monica Gandhi</a>, an infectious disease doctor and a professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco. “However, I actually changed my mind over the ensuing week.”
She noted that the polls aligned with the attitudes she saw in patients, who appreciated that regulators were taking safety issues seriously. Another factor that changed her mind is that with so many vaccines already administered in the US, the challenge now is convincing the remaining people who are more reluctant to get immunized.
“Anything that we can do to assure people who are still concerned about the safety of these vaccines, that everything is going to be closely looked at, I think will hopefully increase vaccine uptake,” Gandhi said.
But the pause had an opportunity cost. People who were in line to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine had to scramble to find alternatives. And now more than a week has passed where people who otherwise would have had some degree of protection against Covid-19 may not have any.

Though pausing the distribution of the vaccine was warranted, waiting more than a week to make a decision about it was likely excessive, according to <a href="https://www.scripps.edu/faculty/topol/">Eric Topol</a>, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute. “There was enough data to make the call last Wednesday,” he said.
Topol added that while vaccine confidence remains high in the US, it’s also important to keep the international context in mind with respect to Covid-19. People in the US also have multiple effective vaccines in circulation while other countries barely have any, and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/16/world/vaccine-hesitancy-africa.html">hesitancy on other continents is already on the rise</a>. How the US manages rare complications will ripple into other countries. “The US is in the fishbowl of the world,” he said.

Four years after President Donald Trump began to pull the US out of the landmark Paris climate agreement, President Joe Biden and his top officials are reengaging with world leaders and making aggressive commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The Biden administration has an unequivocal message at the two-day Leaders Summit on Climate this week: America is back.
The biggest news out of the virtual event was the commitments various countries made to reduce their emissions. At the top, Biden <a href="https://www.vox.com/22397364/earth-day-us-climate-change-summit-biden-john-kerry-commitment-2030-zero-emissions">formally pledged</a> America would cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 52 percent relative to 2005 levels by 2030 — the most ambitious target the US has set to date. Still, as <a href="https://www.vox.com/22397364/earth-day-us-climate-change-summit-biden-john-kerry-commitment-2030-zero-emissions">Vox’s Umair Irfan laid out</a>, some believe the goal is not big enough given the sheer scale of the current climate crisis and the pace of warming.

“America represents less than 15 percent of the world’s emissions,” Biden said Thursday. “No nation can solve this crisis on [their] own, as I know you all fully understand. All of us — and particularly those of us who represent the world’s largest economies — we have to step up.”
Targets announced by other nations were more modest. The big pledge from Chinese President Xi Jinping is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/22/climate/chinas-leader-xi-jinping-promises-to-strictly-limit-coal.html">to reduce coal consumption</a> between 2026 and 2030. But Xi’s announcement was short on specifics, and China’s overall targets — hitting peak carbon emissions by 2030 before getting to net-zero emissions by 2060 — remained unchanged.
Even if the pledges from the US and other countries were broadly encouraging, the real test of whether these countries will actually make good on them is yet to come. Many are putting economic growth first after a year of stagnation due to the Covid-19 pandemic; air pollution levels are <a href="https://time.com/5935138/chinas-environment-economic-recovery/">already soaring again</a> in China.
Biden and his climate team face another big deadline with the <a href="https://ukcop26.org/">United Nations Climate Change Conference</a>, or COP26, set for November in Glasgow.
For now, here are the winners and losers from the first big climate change summit of the Biden era.
After four years of climate policy languishing under Trump, Joe Biden was determined to send a message: Climate is the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/4/22/22396107/climate-biden-agenda-american-jobs-plan">centerpiece of his economic agenda</a>.
“When people talk about climate, I think jobs,” Biden said during his Thursday speech. “Within our climate response lies an extraordinary engine of job creation and economic opportunity ready to be fired up.”
A somewhat unlikely climate champion after years as a political moderate, Biden came into office with a number of big climate and clean energy goals. On his first day in office, he reentered the US into the Paris climate agreement and issued a flurry of <a href="https://www.vox.com/22251851/joe-biden-executive-orders-climate-change-conservation-30-by-2030">executive orders</a> to accelerate the transition off fossil fuels, protect biodiversity, and address environmental injustice.
To underscore America’s renewed commitment, Biden this week announced an ambitious new nationally determined contribution (NDC). Actually getting there will require a massive transformation of the US economy toward clean energy and a big investment in electric vehicles.
This very concept — rerouting the American economy to be powered by wind, solar, nuclear, and other renewables — is the big idea in Biden’s economic vision. He’s pledged 100 percent of America’s energy to be carbon-free by 2035, and his infrastructure and jobs plan calls for a clean electricity standard, tax credits to accelerate wind and solar development, and $174 billion to be put into electric vehicle infrastructure alone.

But Biden also has a challenging road ahead in actually implementing this policy; he needs Congress to pass it. He can certainly direct his agencies to tighten vehicle emission standards and use the power of federal procurement to help get the US there, but passing his infrastructure plan is crucial for reaching the goals.
“That one package doesn’t make or break the 50 percent target,” Nathan Hultman, the director of the University of Maryland’s Center on Global Sustainability, told Vox. But “it’s certainly extraordinarily helpful. There’s no doubt.”
Negotiations are already underway on Biden’s infrastructure plan, and the next few months could determine exactly how bold the US goes on clean energy. But Biden’s pledge was a good start. —Ella Nilsen
It’s hard to imagine President Biden choosing to hold this summit or <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/4/22/22396107/climate-biden-agenda-american-jobs-plan">to center his economic agenda on climate change</a> without the persistent pressure of a wide range of climate activists — young and old, in the US and around the world. In the past few years, they have doggedly and persuasively demanded that world leaders increase their ambition and follow through on climate plans.
Biden’s climate summit and the new pledges are examples of the success of applying that pressure.
The breakout star of Biden’s climate summit is 19-year-old climate justice activist and organizer with Fridays for Future Xiye Bastida. In fiery <a href="https://twitter.com/xiyebastida/status/1385262464598695941?s=20">remarks</a> delivered during a session on climate solutions, Bastida, who relocated to New York from Mexico with her family at the age of 11 when they were displaced by drought and floods, demanded governments act decisively using the tools available to end the climate emergency.
When pushed to address Bastida’s concerns <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cewrM6HQeBY">at a press conference</a> following the summit, climate envoy Kerry said President Biden’s climate summit is a big step in the right direction. “Is it enough? No. But it’s the best we can do today.”
Bastida clearly had made an impression. Speaking at a White House press conference later on Thursday, Kerry described her impassioned plea as “profoundly meaningful” and “moving.”
“That’s where a lot of the younger generation is today, appropriately,” Kerry said. “Pretty upset at the adults — the alleged adults — who are not getting their act together to make happen what needs to happen.”
In the US, the Sunrise Movement is sure to <a href="https://www.sunrisemovement.org/theory-of-change/10-trillion-over-10-years/">continue to push the Biden administration to scale up its infrastructure plan</a>. And activists around the world will maintain pressure on world leaders in the buildup to COP26 in Glasgow. —Jariel Arvin
US climate envoy John Kerry is enormously optimistic about what’s happening in the private sector around clean energy.
Talking to reporters at a Thursday White House briefing, Kerry said that even if another Trump-like politician comes along with regressive climate policies, it won’t necessarily matter. His reasoning? The market is trending too much toward clean energy to go back.
“No politician, no matter how demagogic or how potent and capable they are, is going to be able to change what that market is doing, because it will have moved,” Kerry said, pointing in particular to the heavy demand for Tesla’s electric cars in the US. “It’ll have four years of entrenchment. And those jobs will be there.”
This is not the first time Kerry’s faith in markets has come up. In remarks to the Institute of International Finance, Kerry <a href="https://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2021/03/26/stories/1063728561">said he believed</a> “no government is going to solve this problem” of climate change, adding, “Solutions are going to come from the private sector.”

Kerry has good reason to feel this way. The cost of renewable energy has fallen sharply over the past few years; it’s now cheaper than fossil fuels.
“The costs have plummeted quite rapidly, they’ve gone faster than expected,” Hultman told Vox. “You actually have a lot of choices that are clean, at the same cost, [or] sometimes lower costs than alternate, dirtier technologies.”
But Kerry’s faith in the private sector as the silver bullet is somewhat naive. The private sector is an important partner to meet ambitious climate goals, but it will also take serious investment across all levels of government to get there.
Having lived through the Trump years, members of the Biden administration seem very aware that progress can be short-lived. They want to get shovels in the ground on projects and build out physical infrastructure like 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations, offshore wind turbines, and solar farms before another US leader tries to go in the opposite direction.
Furthermore, the market forces at play now happened in part due to government intervention. Investment and production tax credits in President Obama’s 2009 stimulus bill <a href="https://grist.org/energy/obamas-recovery-act-breathed-life-into-renewables-now-they-need-rescuing/">spurred tremendous development</a> in renewables. The low cost of solar panels didn’t happen in a vacuum. “It was driven, at every stage, by smart public policy,” Dave Roberts <a href="https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2018/11/20/18104206/solar-panels-cost-cheap-mit-clean-energy-policy">wrote for Vox</a> in 2015.
The private sector can be an important partner in combating climate change. But plenty of experts warn it needs strong signals from the highest levels of government, and it can’t be implicitly trusted to do the right thing. —EN
One message came out loud and clear from the summit: In a world committed to climate action, government support for coal power is rapidly waning.
In the United States, where the coal industry is being pushed out of the market by cheaper energy sources, there are <a href="https://coal.sierraclub.org/">191 plants</a> still operating. To hit Biden’s target of reducing greenhouse gas pollution by 50 percent, it’s likely that all of them will have to shutter before 2030. That is the conclusion of multiple studies on the paths to reach Biden’s goal, including from the environmental groups <a href="https://www.edf.org/sites/default/files/documents/Recapturing%20U.S.%20Leadership%20on%20Climate.pdf">Environmental Defense Fund</a> and <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/resources/biden-administration-must-swiftly-commit-cutting-climate-pollution-least-50-percent-2030">Natural Resources Defense Council</a>, the research groups <a href="https://energyinnovation.org/resources/our-publications/">Energy Innovation</a> and <a href="https://eta.lbl.gov/publications/illustrative-strategies-united-states">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory</a>, and the coalition <a href="https://www.americaspledgeonclimate.com/accelerating-americas-pledge-2/">America Is All In</a>.
According to Energy Innovation, “Without eliminating coal emissions by 2030, achieving US emission reductions in line with a 50 percent reduction is impossible.” Even the United Mine Workers, the major labor group representing coal miners, has acknowledged that reality <a href="https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/why-shift-united-mine-workers-so-important-n1264615">by embracing</a> Biden’s infrastructure package — and a transition to clean energy — in the days leading up to the summit.
His plan already asks Congress to pass a national clean energy standard that would raise utilities’ renewable targets and ratchet down their coal and gas dependency by a deadline of 2035. And his EPA is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/15/climate/michael-regan-epa.html">already working</a> to prepare new power plant regulations that take the place of the Obama-era Clean Power Plan and the weak Trump rule that the courts <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/federal-court-strikes-major-trump-climate-rollback-75347444">struck down</a>.
But coal’s decline hasn’t been as swift in many other parts of the world, where renewable energy and natural gas have been slower to replace it. In major economies like China, India, Japan, and Indonesia, governments have continued to rely on coal — and finance the development of new plants overseas.
That’s why several new commitments to phase out coal consumption and financing at the summit are so notable. China’s President Xi reiterated his country’s goal to hit peak pollution sometime before 2030 but elaborated for the first time on a specific timeline for the coal industry. In China’s next five-year economic plan, from 2026 to 2030, it would “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/22/climate/chinas-leader-xi-jinping-promises-to-strictly-limit-coal.html">strictly limit</a>” the increase in its consumption of coal, he said. Another major announcement came from South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who said the country would cut off all <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/global-climate-summit-southkorea-idUSL4N2MF3R2">overseas financing</a> of coal.
None of this means coal will disappear overnight. But major world leaders signaling the demise of coal and coal financing is a clear sign the fuel is becoming a smaller fraction of the world’s energy mix. —Rebecca Leber
Even as economies slowed last year from the pandemic, tropical deforestation worldwide paced ahead — <a href="https://wri-indonesia.org/en/blog/primary-rainforest-destruction-increased-12-2019-2020">jumping 12 percent</a>, compared to 2019. And that number came with a big toll on the climate: carbon emissions equal to roughly double the annual tailpipe emissions of cars in the US, <a href="https://wri-indonesia.org/en/blog/primary-rainforest-destruction-increased-12-2019-2020">according to the World Resources Institute</a>. A large chunk of those emissions can be tied to Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bolivia, which saw the highest rates of deforestation last year.
Enter a <a href="http://www.leafcoalition.org/">new coalition</a>, launched Thursday, that seeks to funnel at least $1 billion in payments to countries that show they’re preventing tropical deforestation and its associated emissions. The US, Britain, and Norway are driving the effort along with a number of major corporations, including Amazon, Nestlé, Unilever, and Salesforce, forming what the group called “one of the largest ever public-private efforts to help protect tropical forests.”
“Bringing together government and private-sector resources is a necessary step in supporting the large-scale efforts that must be mobilized to halt deforestation and begin to restore tropical and subtropical forests,” Kerry said in a statement when the group, known as the Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest Finance Coalition (LEAF), was announced Thursday.

Under the project, countries, states, or provinces in tropical forest countries would receive money after proving they reduced deforestation or forest degradation. Each ton of avoided carbon emissions would yield a carbon credit worth at least $10 that companies could then buy to offset their own emissions (though, as the <a href="http://www.leafcoalition.org/img/pdf/LEAF%20Press%20Release.pdf">press release</a> states, corporate “contributions to the LEAF Coalition come in addition to, and not as a substitute for, internal emissions reductions”).
The initiative is similar to an existing and complicated effort, known as REDD+, that involves high-income countries paying lower-income nations for avoided emissions from deforestation. REDD+ has <a href="https://features.propublica.org/brazil-carbon-offsets/inconvenient-truth-carbon-credits-dont-work-deforestation-redd-acre-cambodia/">been criticized</a> for doing little to curb forest loss since it was set up more than a decade ago.
LEAF differs in that it involves private companies, but the effort could face similar challenges, such as in proving what’s called “additionality” — that deforestation would have occurred had it not been for a country’s efforts. Some environmental groups have also pointed out that $1 billion isn’t much and said the project won’t work unless Indigenous land rights are recognized and enforced.
“Rich countries and corporations are getting a bargain,” Savio Carvalho, global campaign lead for biodiversity at Greenpeace International, said in a statement. “One billion dollars is a drop in the bucket when governments are spending trillions to support sectors that are destroying nature and our climate.” —Benji Jones
In the days leading up to the summit, House Republicans halfheartedly and unsuccessfully tried to reverse the cemented narrative that their official climate platform is to deny scientific reality. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy published a video touting the Energy Innovation Agenda, a package of “dozens of bills and solutions” the GOP has to address climate change and infrastructure as a counterpoint to Biden’s agenda.

The campaign launched at a time when GOP lawmakers are realizing that climate denial and foot-dragging are poor politics, especially when it comes to appealing to a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/02/climate/climate-change-republicans.html">younger conservative base</a> that wants to see a plan to combat the crisis.
But the Republican proposals only offer <a href="https://www.eenews.net/climatewire/2021/04/22/stories/1063730659">piecemeal solutions</a>, like planting more trees, managing forests, and extending tax credits for technological innovation like carbon capture. And there’s more of the same in their broader messaging, like their continued opposition to the Paris climate agreement. The agenda introduced by McCarthy and 40 fellow Republicans just reiterates that fossil fuels remain the centerpiece in the GOP’s vision of the American economy, and no number of trees planted will offset that.
Republicans’ too-little-too-late push is a reminder to the global community of how unserious the party remains on climate change and that it intends to continue the isolationist policies of the Trump administration rather than broker international agreement.
Even members of the Republican Party who have urged their counterparts to take climate change seriously for years found the proposals lacking. As Bob Inglis, a former Republican Congress member who has devoted his work to advancing conservative climate solutions, told <a href="https://www.eenews.net/stories/1063730379">E&E News’s Nick Sobczyk</a>, “It’s true that Republicans are taking small steps and basically testing the waters with their base, and that’s the reality of what we’re dealing with, and I assume that world leaders would see that.” —RL
While the summit attendees sent a clear signal that coal is on the way out, they were far more lukewarm on another major contributor to climate change: natural gas. To hit the world’s 1.5 degree Celsius target, we’ll have to rein in methane, a <a href="https://www.epa.gov/gmi/importance-methane">type of greenhouse gas</a> that is especially effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere and dangerous for global warming. While methane can come from a variety of sources, such as agriculture and landfills, environmentalists see regulating the oil and gas sector as the first place to start, by keeping the gas in the ground.
Yet the industry seemed to get a pass at the summit — most leaders sidestepped methane and natural gas entirely in their speeches and announcements. Surprisingly, it was Russian President Vladimir Putin who drew <a href="https://twitter.com/AkshatRathi/status/1385218668506845184">the most attention</a> to methane but <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/04/22/us/biden-earth-day-climate-summit">stopped short</a> of offering concrete commitments to halt plans to build natural gas pipelines. The less focus from world leaders on the oil and gas industry’s methane problems, the better, from the eyes of the industry, because it signals that there won’t be more regulation coming anytime soon.
In the US, addressing methane is critical to meet Biden’s goal of slashing greenhouse pollution by 2030, but Biden has only offered a few clues for how his administration plans to tackle it. The fact sheet from the White House on Biden’s target only gives methane a brief and vague mention, saying, “The United States will also reduce non-CO2 greenhouse gases, including methane, hydrofluorocarbons, and other potent short-lived climate pollutants.” The nonprofit Clean Air Task Force has urged the US to adopt a target of reducing oil and gas emissions to <a href="https://www.catf.us/resource/oil-gas-methane-mapping-the-path-to-a-65-reduction/">65 percent below</a> its 2012 levels by 2025.
Regulation in the US is still coming. Biden’s new EPA administrator Michael Regan promised the administration will roll out more aggressive policies to curb existing and new natural gas methane leaks than the Obama administration and plans to unveil its plans sometime by September.
But the overall silence at the summit still signals that the world is not yet ready to ditch natural gas as quickly as it plans to ditch coal. —RL
The 2015 Paris climate agreement has a topline goal of limiting the increase in global average temperatures this century to below 2 degrees Celsius, but it also has a secondary, more ambitious target of keeping warming below 1.5°C.
Back in 2018, the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/10/9/17951924/climate-change-global-warming-un-ipcc-report-takeaways">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change put out a major report</a> looking at just how hard it would be to meet the 1.5°C target. It found that every degree of warming matters, with higher temperatures extracting a higher human and economic toll. The report concluded that to reach this goal, the world has until 2030 to slash greenhouse gas emissions by half or more from present.
And 1.5°C is hardly a “safe” climate. The world has already warmed by at least 1°C on average, and the <a href="https://www.vox.com/21452781/zogg-fire-glass-wildfire-california-climate-change-hurricanes-attribution-2020-debate">effects have been devastating</a>. The longer the world waits to act to limit emissions, the harder it will get.
The new US climate target — a 50 to 52 percent cut in emissions relative to 2005 by 2030 — “looks like it is consistent” with the 1.5°C goal, according to a senior White House official on a <a href="https://www.state.gov/briefings-foreign-press-centers/preview-of-president-bidens-leaders-summit-on-climate/">call with reporters</a> on Wednesday. But according to <a href="https://climateactiontracker.org/publications/1o5C-consistent-benchmarks-for-us-2030-climate-target/">Climate Action Tracker</a>, a US commitment in line with this target would actually need a 57 to 63 percent cut.
Many other countries have also said they are using 1.5°C as their benchmark for their climate commitments. Rhetorically, it seems there is widespread support for being more ambitious. However, it’s clear there’s a cavernous rift between commitments and actions. Global greenhouse gas emissions have only grown since the 2018 IPCC report. While there was a lull in this growth last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, <a href="https://www.vox.com/22310154/covid-climate-change-emissions-cars-flights-us-china">emissions are poised to rebound</a> around the world, including in the US, as economies reopen.
So now the world has to make even more drastic cuts to greenhouse gases — and in less time. It’s easy to paint a target years into the future. It’s much harder to take aim today. And right now, that target is nowhere in our sights. —Umair Irfan
