A pagan militia in the Congo, which calls itself the "Kamwina Nsapu militia," <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/congolese-militia-decapitates-40-police-officials-46371811">ambushed</a> over forty police officers and decapitated all of them. The militia made the attack between the cities of Tshikapa and Kananga in Central Kasai province on Friday. Six police officers were spared simply because they spoke the local Tshiluba language. The violence in the Kasai region erupted in August after the leader of the militia was killed by government security forces. So far, more than four hundred people have been killed, and around two hundred thousand displaced, according to the U.N.The United Nations has also discovered over a dozen mass graves in three provinces of the Kasai region. Anger in the Congo has been violently increasing since President Joseph Kabila has been ruling passed his term. Promises of new elections by the end of the year, without Kabila, have been half-full.Very violent militias have arisen and are attacking security forces with crude weapons and child soldiers. On March 12th, investigators, Michael Sharp of the U.S., Zaida Catalan of Sweden, and their interpreter Betu Tshintela, alongside driver Isaac Kabuayi and two motorbike drivers went missing. They were investigating human rights violations done by the Congolese government and the militias, and then they disappeared. This is the first time that U.N. investigators have gone missing in the Congo.Rape and other forms of sexual have been rampant in the Congo."The Congo war has the highest rate of violence against women and girls in the world,"says The Enough Project's co-founder John Prendergast. said. "And reports indicate that hundreds of thousands have been raped, making it the most dangerous place in the world to be a woman or girl." The horrors going beyond this. Its not just women who are being raped, but men and boys. According to <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://indianexpress.com/article/world/from-syria-to-congo-male-victims-of-sexual-violence-in-conflict-neglected-4582406/">one report</a> that came out this month, "male victims have largely been neglected by aid agencies, who focus mainly on providing support to female victims of violence in conflict, the experts said."Recently, there was a plan of the Trump administration that was leaked; the plan is to remove the prohibition on companies from purchasing minerals taken from genocidal warlords through slavery. The minerals, metals used to make very popular technology such as iPhones, are purchased from the Congo. The problem is that warlords are also taking these minerals, but through forced slavery. In 2010, the United States government, under the Obama administration, ratified the Dodd-Frank Act. Section 1502 of the act orders that all companies avoid using minerals taken by warlords. It also requires companies to document and track their global supply trains and give independently made reports to the Securities Exchange Commission. Audrey Gaughran, Amnesty International's director of global issues, said:<blockquote>"The conflict minerals law is a vital way of breaking the chain between horrific human rights abuses in Central Africa and consumer products like smartphones"</blockquote>The minerals used, Tantalum, tin, tungsten (the 3Ts) and gold, are categorized as conflict minerals because they are sold by warlords to finance their wars and their atrocities. For this reason, companies are required to prove that they haven't acquired these metals by supporting terrorists. Because of the blood lust for these metals, 5.4 million people have been killed since the 1990s. Yet the Trump administration, likely under the influence of lobbyists, wants to remove the prohibition against the taking of conflict metals. Joanne Lebert, executive director of Ottawa's non-profit Partnership Africa Canada, said: "The whole point of [Section 1502] was to remove the warlords ...So this is going to send a signal that it's carte blanche. They can do whatever they want."Industrialists, as well as politicians, have been trying to get rid of section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Act. Mary Jo White, who  was the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, said that while she would like to see an end to the atrocities in the Congo, section 1502 is "more directed at exerting societal pressure on companies to change behaviour, rather than to disclose financial information that primarily informs investment decisions." Franklin Vargo, vice-president of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the largest industrial trade group in the US, said in May of 2102 that while also was disturbed by what has been occurring in the Congo, he saw Section 1502 as more of a burden on his position. In the same year of 2012, <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/trump-conflict-minerals-congo-1.4025968">according to Joan Leishman:</a><blockquote>Later that year, three of America's largest industry associations — NAM, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable (a group of top CEOs) — filed suit against the SEC, hoping to repeal the conflict minerals law.</blockquote>The companies who filed against Section 1502 gained a partial victory, since the court ruled that the requirement of companies to specify that their minerals has "not been found to be DRC conflict-free" violates the First Amendment. The rest of Section 1502 has been held. In 2010, when the Dodd-Frank Act was established, nearly every mineral mine in the Congo was controlled by warlords or military groups. An October 1916 study done by the International Peace Information Service (IPIS), surveyed miners at tin, tantalum, and tungsten mines in three conflict-affected provinces in the eastern party of the Congo. 79% of them were working in conflict free zones. The North Kivu region is said to have exported a record 1,121 tons of tantalum in 2016 and 1,550 tons of tin, without supporting warlords. 220 mines have been validated as conflict-free by multi-stakeholder teams.Activists have been urging the Trump administration to not cancel out Section 1502. A letter signed by 31 civil society groups said: “Any step to suspend section 1502 would undoubtedly lead to conflict minerals infiltrating the supply chain with devastating effects. Namely, the reactivation of armed groups and the feeding of terrorist and mafia networks.”Another letter signed by 13 Congolese human rights groups in North Kivu said: “The introduction of the Dodd-Frank Act was a way of reducing the number of violent acts committed by these warlords and enabled the suspension of illegal arms sales; sales which had facilitated the proliferation of unauthorised weapons in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. ...Mr President [Trump], we wish to most expressly assure you that if you decide to call into question the Dodd-Frank Act, this will once again lend legitimacy to the presence and proliferation of armed groups in the east of the DRC, something which Congolese civil society condemns in the strongest terms.”31 Congolese civil society groups and others, in a different letter, wrote: “Dodd-Frank has been the primary driver of corporate and regional policy change on conflict minerals.” (<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.irinnews.org/opinion/2017/02/28/support-dodd-frank-conflict-minerals-regulation">source</a>)Slavery never died. According to the Christian humanitarian organization Open Doors USA, as many as 1.8 million people in Nigeria are currently facing starvation.While there are several displacement camps set up throughout the country to aid those vulnerable, displaced and hungry families, there are a number of camps where Christians are being discriminated against and, in some instances, being told that the food and relief "is not for Christians.""The governor did his best when the Christians had to flee in 2014 and 2015. Since Muslims are also being attacked, Muslim organizations running the camps feel inclined to give Muslims "preferential treatment.""Christians often get pushed to the back of the line," Fuentes explained. "Because Muslims are the majority there, even non-extremist Muslims, some of their neighbors are typically going to get preferential treatment by those providing food and assistance because of their Muslim faith. Christians might be discriminated against and some of those cases have been reported. It's just preferential treatment because they are not the majority religion in that part of the country."Fuentes said that even though the discrimination against Christians might not occur at all displacement camps in Nigeria, "it is happening prevalently.""I cannot say it is happening in all of them by any means. But we have heard of many cases," she stated.Because of the discrimination Christians are facing at displacement camps, there has been an ongoing effort by Christians, churches and other organizations to set up displacement camps for Christians, which are being supported by Open Doors and its local partners on the ground."We have started informal, purely Christian camps because Christians were being segregated in the formal camps. They had not been given food, or allowed to go to church," John Gwamma, chairman at an informal Christian camp, told Open Doors U.K. "There is a term called 'arne,' meaning pagan, meaning you are pagan and not a Muslim. And as long as you are not a Muslim, we don't like you to stay together with us."Fuentes told CP that although these camps were set up to aid displaced Christians, all displaced people are welcome, no matter their faith."There has been churches making an effort for several years to take in some of the displaced and doing things like this," Fuentes stated. "It has been an ongoing effort. Open Doors works with partners in this country. We have been able to work with them in getting assistance for the displaced, helping them build homes, food, other vital things that displaced people are in need of."Along with helping provide aid and assistance, Fuentes explained that Open Doors is also helping widows of men who have been killed by Boko Haram receive job-skills training. She added that in some instances, the organization has provided widows with micro loans to help them start their own businesses."Boko Haram's tactics are especially heinous. They will go in in the middle of the night and attack women and children on top of men. They specifically target men most of the time," Fuentes explained. "In Nigerian culture, the man is typically the bread winner. They know they can destroy basically the entire family if they take out the man. Widows are often left with larger families in Nigeria. We met a lot of widows with five or six kids and no way to take care of them."As Open Doors ranks Nigeria as the 12th worst country in the world when it comes to the persecution of Christians, the organization has found that as many as five churches are attacked every Sunday in northern Nigeria on average.Fuentes, who traveled to Nigeria about four years ago, said that she spoke with locals who told her about instances in which Boko Haram fighters would disguise themselves as police officers and stop cars as they cross border checkpoints. Fighters, upon stopping each car, would check identification cards to see if the driver and passengers had Muslim names or Christian names."One of the guys I spoke to, his name was John. They looked at his ID, saw his name was John and shot him at point-blank range," she said. The suspension came after he made a Facebook post about freeing Yazidi sex slaves from ISIS, raising questions as to how that was achieved and if the terrorists were paid off.The post also prompted an investigation of the foundation by the Charity Commission, the official charity regulator in England. As a registered UK charity, the organization is not permitted to engage in hostage release negotiations and it is against the law to pay ransoms to designated terrorist groups.Nothing has come of the enquiry and White denied any wrongdoing – publicly assuring that “at no time did we pay money to any terrorists.” He has not let the controversy stop him from continuing to help those fleeing ISIS atrocities in the Middle East. He praised Trump’s commitment to helping “persecuted Christians” and for modifying his original travel ban to ensure Iraqis can still travel to the U.S. – viewing that as acknowledgment that the two countries maintain positive ties. While most brush through the verses in Isaiah 14 by doing selective reading without focusing on every word, verse 13 says:<blockquote>“I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north.”</blockquote>What is this “mount of the congregation”?This declaration is not regarding Lucifer in his angelic stage, but Antichrist “is this the man that made the earth tremble” (v.17) and is said to rule from Pergamum (Revelation 2:12-13) which Christ proclaimed would be the future seat of Satan (Antichrist). This “mount of the congregation” is on the sides of the northern lands in Asia Minor—Turkey. It is in Turkey that the Seven Churches and the Seven Lamp stands were and this is no small issue to ignore.Others see this “mount of the congregation” as the temple in Jerusalem. In the itinerary written after the return, he described many Byzantine objects of the capital, including the Hagia Sophia basilica, whose name according to him should be understood as the Temple of Wisdom and Word of God. Rich Wingo, R-62.It would "prohibit the state from discriminating against child placing agencies on the basis that the provider declines to provide a child placement that conflicts with the religious beliefs of the provider."The bill would also prohibit the state from denying a license or license renewal to an agency that refuses to "carry out an activity" against its religion."Religious organizations, in particular, have a lengthy and distinguished history of providing child placing services that predate government involvement," the Act explains. "This act seeks to ensure that people of any faith, or no faith at all, are free to serve children and families who are in need in ways consistent with the communities that first inspired their service. ... Child placing agencies, both individuals and organizations, have the inherent, fundamental, and inalienable right to free exercise of religion protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution."The Act also cites Alabama's Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which prohibits "the government from burdening the freedom of religion of a person unless the burden is in furtherance of 14 compelling governmental interest and is done in the least restrictive means." RFRA laws have angered LGBT and abortion advocates across the country. RFRA was at the core of the Little Sisters of the Poor case. The Obama administration tried to force the pro-life nuns to cooperate in the provision of contraception and life-ending drugs.Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch has repeatedly explained RFRA and his rulings invoking it during his confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. "There is no compelling reason to require a child placing agency to violate its sincerely held religious beliefs in providing any service, since alternative access to 10 the services is equally available," says the Act. "Ensuring that religious organizations can continue to provide child placing services will benefit the children and families that receive those services."Openly gay Rep. Patricia Todd, D-54, is strongly opposed to the bill. She said it's "a direct attack against my community" and that it suggests she is "not qualified to be a fit parent ... based on the fact that I love a woman."Roughly 30 percent of Alabama's adoption agencies are religious. Wingo pointed out that if they were forced to shut down, it "would create a burden on the state that impacts the children." Now while there are many issues that he and any future nominee would face, one of the major issues will be about abortion. While there are many people who want it to stay permissible, there is a huge move to abandon the abhorrent practice. President Trump himself has even said that he wants it banned.According to a recent story, Gorsuch said that he "would be willing to stand up to President Trump" on issues that he disagrees with, calling it a "softball question." Right after, interestingly, he was asked after about abortion, in which he answered the question of whether or not he would give an answer on abortion if Trump asked him, saying "I would have walked out."<blockquote>Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch faced 10 hours of questioning by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.Try as they might, Democrats couldn't land a punch against Gorsuch when it came to eliciting his views on specific issues or cases — past, present or future.As his allies had predicted, the federal appeals court judge adhered closely to the "Ginsburg standard," coined after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's insistence in her 1993 hearing to offer "no forecasts, no hints" about her positions on cases that might come before the court.Abortion rights? No direct answer. Gun restrictions? Nope. Money in politics? Not for him to say. The same applied to virtually any topic Democrats broached....One question Gorsuch was eager to answer: Would he be independent as a justice, even willing to vote against the president who nominated him? Yes, he said, calling it a "softball question."Nor did he have any problem denying the use of litmus tests in his nomination. “I wasn’t about to become a party to such a thing," he said. If Trump had asked for his view on Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion, he said later, "I would have walked out the door."The answers — about the most definitive Gorsuch gave during hours of testimony — served to silence Democrats on what had promised to be fertile ground, given the president's many controversial statements and tweets. At least for a few hours anyway. If "standing up" to the president is such a "softball question" and so easily answered, why would he not answer the question of whether or not he supports abortion or not, because he basically has three answers he can give- yes, I completely support it; yes, I support it in (x) cases; or no, I do not support abortion. Why would his answer matter on this issue if it was merely a difference of opinion?Now add to this the fact that the New York Times has the following and interesting article about his views on abortion, euthanasia, and death:<blockquote>Judge Neil M. Gorsuch has written little about abortion, and we do not know whether he would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that established abortion as a fundamental right. But he has expressed a position on two related subjects, assisted suicide and euthanasia. In his Oxford dissertation and a later book, he defended the inviolability of human life. He rejected the role of states in granting the terminally ill a right to die and offered a legal framework that could be applied to abortion.Judge Gorsuch, who is President Trump’s nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Antonin Scalia’s death last year, argued in both his dissertation and his book, “The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia,” that the Constitution requires banning doctor-assisted suicide and euthanasia nationwide, with a few possible exceptions. He asserted that allowing these practices in any state would violate the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection. Such a law would treat “the lives of different persons quite differently” by prohibiting the murder of the healthy while allowing the killing of the sick, he wrote.Judge Gorsuch has clearly thought long and hard about matters of life and death. Would he extrapolate to abortion his views on assisted suicide or euthanasia? It’s not clear. In his dissertation, his limited remarks on Roe are skeptical; he calls its logic a “hodgepodge of doctrines and theories” and refers to abortion as a “nontextual right,” meaning it has no basis in the text of the Constitution. However, as Amy Howe of Scotusblog noted recently, he “has not ruled on any cases directly involving abortion during his 10 years” as an appeals court judge.But he has had much to say in his writings about human personhood and the inviolability of life, views that are worth exploring. What gives individuals such an inviolable right, he has reasoned, is a status that legal scholars call “constitutional personhood,” defined by the 14th Amendment. Under that amendment, a state is prohibited from denying any constitutional person “life, liberty or property, without due process of law,” and cannot “deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”The Roe decision expressly excluded human fetuses from that definition. As the court put it in 1973, “the word ‘person,’ as used in the 14th Amendment, does not include the unborn.” But if the Supreme Court were ever to recognize fetuses as constitutional persons, however unlikely that might seem now, then under Judge Gorsuch’s framework, the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause would require that they be entitled to the same legal protection as constitutional persons. Laws that prohibit murder thus would have to be extended to them.Judge Gorsuch has said as much himself. In his book, he wrote, “Abortion would be ruled out by the inviolability-of-life principle I intend to set forth if, but only if, a fetus is considered a human life.” He noted that had the court “found the fetus to be a ‘person’ for purposes of the 14th Amendment, it could not have created a right to abortion because no constitutional basis exists for preferring the mother’s liberty interests over the child’s life.” (<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/21/opinion/gorsuch-abortion-and-the-concept-of-personhood.html?_r=0">source</a>)</blockquote>This is precisely what I was concerned would happen.The fact is that Mr. Gorsuch's views on this matter are unclear and he will not give an answer to them. he will suggest 'the inviolability of life' on one hand, while at the same time he will also suggest that abortion is permissible 'within a given framework' and then will not answer if a child is considered a human being or not. This all includes the fact that he will not give a clear answer about abortion at all.Even his views on euthanasia are even more interesting, for has he himself notes, the right to life is something called "constitutional personality," suggesting the idea that a man's right to life comes from the constitution as opposed to being articulated by the constitution. In other words, the suggestion of the idea that a man's rights come from the government granting them through its laws as opposed to being intrinsic and that the laws of men, while imperfect, are meant to reflect as best as possible the natural law.<blockquote>Yet while nobody can get a straight answer from Mr. Gorsuch, the "pro-life" movement has already been proudly saying that Gorsuch is a 'staunch defender of life' who needs to be confirmed immediately:Judge Neil Gorsuch deserves “swift confirmation” to the U.S. Supreme Court, leaders of pro-life and pro-family groups have said.“Neil Gorsuch has proven himself to be a defender of the most basic human rights,” said the March 20 letter, organized by the Susan B. Anthony List and addressed to U.S. senators.The letter cited Gorsuch’s book, The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, in which he said, “Human life is fundamentally and inherently valuable, and the intentional taking of human life by private persons is always wrong.”More than 50 leaders signed the letter, including representatives of the Susan B. Anthony List, Live Action, National Right to Life, Students for Life and state pro-life and pro-family groups.They praised Gorsuch as an intelligent and fair-minded nominee with a fitting temperament, citing his 2006 unanimous confirmation by the Senate to his current seat on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.“We believe that Judge Gorsuch’s thoughtful opinions illuminate how he would decide difficult questions on the Supreme Court,” the letter said. (<a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/pro-life-leaders-call-for-swift-confirmation-of-judge-gorsuch">source</a>)</blockquote>How can these groups call his opinions thoughtful and laud them when they raise more questions than answering them, giving unclear and contradictory statements as responses? If anything, the "pro life" groups should be demanding explanation of his positions and clear answers in the same way that the liberals demand such from the people they nominate to court or support in politics.Gorsuch is giving such vague answers because, as we have said before, this is an issue of power and policy. While there are many people in America who are good, there is a long history of eugenics in this country going back to the earliest days. Abortion is simply another form of eugenics through which "undesirable" people are allowed to murder their own children. Those who rule this country have no desire to see it change. While Gorsuch may be a powerful man if he becomes a judge, as I have said before, the US is ultimately an oligarchy that is controlled by financial and industrial interests who use the government to pass laws to favor themselves and their interests, and while Gorsuch is an individual, he will still be beholden to them and will have to contend against their interests just as many people have pointed out that Trump, although president, has had to contend against many interests in his own cabinet and military. At the end of the day, just like with all of these individuals, should he receive power he is not going to want to just abandon it, and the way to do that is to keep "running" the machine, since if he does not comply he will be replaced. Individuals change, but the policies do not.Likewise, this is another reflection of the true state of the "pro-life" movement. While there are many good people involved in it, the fact is that the "pro-life" movement is not interested in eliminating abortion because those at the higher levels have made careers "fighting abortion" and with it lucrative salaries. To stop abortion means to stop the businesses they have build around it, and in turn means losing money for them and ultimately, to have to find another job. For their purposes, it is in their interests to keep abortion legal so they have a reason to keep fighting it so that they can keep their businesses alive. Again, I emphasize this is not the case for most of the individuals, especially on the lower levels who are part of this, but for those who are in the higher levels of the major "life" organizations. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that they would support Gorsuch, for if Gorsuch cannot give a clear answer and his statements move with the spirit of the times, then policy will continue as normal with the usual tensions between the "pro-choice" and "pro-life" people without any actual progress being made except to expand abortion in new and more interesting ways as technology progresses.Abortion is evil. There is no getting around that fact. It is also something that many people- for personal, business, and political reasons- really do want. However, they do not want to deal with the realities of this evil or address it directly, preferring instead to avoid the question or adopt tangental measures to deal with or control a limited number of the effects that are caused by the problem. Certainly while no sin can be completely eliminated from anywhere, it certainly can be controlled and greatly reduced, especially something as serious as abortion. It is not that America has the capacity, but it is that it does not want to do this, and that is why Gorsuch would make such a fitting judge. For if politicians and judges reflect the nature of the people, then Gorsuch's refusal to answer a basic question while answering it and not answering in other ways on such a fundamental matter as abortion is just a reflection of what the average man has become today.
