<p>A neighbourhood in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has been locked down as officials rush to quell an uptick in cases in the area.</p>
<p>The industrial hub north of Hong Kong home to nearly 15 million people has reported 20 new cases of the coronavirus in the past week.</p>
<p>A notice by the Guangzhou municipal health bureau issued Saturday identified five streets in Liwan district in the city centre as "high-risk areas" and ordered residents to stay indoors until door-to-door testing is completed.</p>
<p>Markets, schools and entertainment venues in the area were shut.</p>
<p>The city government has rushed to conduct mass testing and about 700,000 people had been tested by Wednesday.</p>
<p>China has largely controlled the spread of the virus and has tightened quarantine rules after a surge in cases in neighbouring countries.</p>
<p>The total number of confirmed infections in China to date stands at 91,061, with 4,636 deaths, according to the latest figures from the National Health Commission.</p>

One passage from the article reads as follows: “Mr. Cornish laughs and claps when Zulema gets her man. He seems anxious to stall the inevitable, but seconds later he clears his throat and reads from a fabric-covered journal. “Death Speaks” is his own creation: Come to me sweet lover…And let my lips suck the warmth from your flesh…I can feel your heat, your pain, your fear..Your screams are like music to me …He recites the lines briskly, lessening their emotional wallop. “You wrote that when you were how old?” someone asks. “Sixteen,” he says, unsure whether to feel embarrassed or proud.”</p>
<p><strong>How disturbing is it that Haines personally listened to erotic death-themed material written by a 16-year old? The article makes clear that Haines was really into erotica during this period of time.</strong></p>

Cafe Charging $5 Fee for Mask-Wearing Customers

<p><strong>A cafe in Northern California is taking heat from mask lovers after its owner instituted a new policy charging $5 if customers wear face coverings.</strong></p>
<p>The sign posted outside Fiddlehead’s Cafe in Mendocino informs patrons they’ll incur a $5 surcharge if they order masked.</p>
<p>“$5 FEE ADDED TO ORDERS PLACED WHILE WEARING A FACE MASK,” the sign says, adding, “AN ADDITIONAL $5 FEE WILL BE ADDED IF YOU ARE CAUGHT BRAGGING ABOUT YOUR VACCINE.”</p>
<p>A footnote on the poster indicates the cafe means business: “PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO LOCAL CHARITIES ASSISTING DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS.”</p>
<p>The owner of Fiddlehead’s, Chris Castleman, says he put the sign up because of the treatment he received over masks during the pandemic.</p>
<p>“I’ve been told this whole time that wearing a mask is a small price to pay,” Castleman <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/fiddleheads-cafe-vaccines-mask-policy-sign-16206085.php">told</a> <em>SFGate</em>. “Some people get shocked by the sign but to see them turn around and get disgusted … when they’re asked to pay $5 [for charity], it’s not in their wheelhouse. It’s not something they’re choosing to do.”</p>
<p>Castleman says some customers have paid the fee while others have gotten upset over the charitable contribution.</p>
<p>The cafe owner says he’s keeping the sign, which went up Monday, posted for a few more months as he believes the county will keep mask orders in place.</p>

<p>“I can’t wait to hear he died from Covid,” one commenter stated.</p>
<p>“GET THE F**K OUT OF CALIFORNIA, YOU UNETHICAL C**KSUCKER!” another person stated.</p>
<p>Back in April, Fiddlehead’s also <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/Fiddleheads-discount-mask-sign-Castleman-COVID-16079028.php" target="_blank">ran a promotion</a> giving customers 50% off their order if they threw their masks in the trash.</p>
<p>The cafe at one point was also offering customers free Covid-19 vaccine cards, however <em>SFGate</em> reports that sign’s been removed.</p>
<p>For months, Castleman has been pushing back against county, local and state coronavirus ordinances. Amid the height of the pandemic last year, he <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.northbaybusinessjournal.com/article/news/mendocino-restaurateur-closes-rather-than-comply-with-health-order/" target="_blank">closed his business down</a> rather than comply with county orders that would have forced his employees to wear face masks.</p>
<p>The business owner’s defiance of unconstitutional big government mandates makes him an Infowars all-star, and his bravery should serve as an example for others to follow.</p>

<p>In the evening, the public prosecutor of Nantes, Pierre Sennès, detailed the circumstances of the attack during a press conference: around 10:20 a.m., a man presented himself at the municipal police station of La Chapelle -on-Erdre, explaining that he had a vehicle problem to resolve. “Very quickly, he threw himself on this person [the municipal policewoman] and stabbed her several times, injuring her hand and legs ,” said Mr. Sennès. This victim being on the ground, he stole his service weapon, a revolver capable of firing six shots. ”</p>
<p>According to the prosecutor, two people located on the floor of the municipal police station then went down and tried to control the individual, who threatened them. “On leaving, he meets a municipal police officer and stabs him, but he touches the bulletproof vest and the blade will break,” continued the Nantes prosecutor. The attacker then fled in his vehicle, but had to continue on foot after an accident.</p>
<p>A vast manhunt was then launched. Two hundred and fifty gendarmes, including the GIGN branch in Nantes, are deployed to find the perpetrator. <p>In his flight, the attacker rushed into a private residence in La Chapelle-sur-Erdre, around 10:40 am There, “he will enter an apartment and kidnap the resident for 2 h 30″ , traced the prosecutor. At 1:10 p.m., he stood on the balcony of the apartment, saw the gendarmerie located nearby, and opened fire at least twice on the gendarmes, who replied, without anyone being injured on both sides.</p>

<p>There could be slight acid rains due to the emission of nitrogen dioxide from the Singapore-flagged cargo ship which caught fire near the Colombo beach last week, Sri Lanka's top environment body has warned, asking people to be vigilant in case of inclement weather.</p>
<p>The cargo vessel - MV 'X-PRESS PEARL' - was carrying a consignment of chemicals and raw materials for cosmetics from Hazira in Gujarat to Colombo Port. It caught fire 9.5 nautical miles from the coast in Colombo, where it was anchored outside the Port of Colombo on May 20.</p>
<p>Apart from the 325 metric tonnes of fuel in its tanks, MV X-Press Pearl was loaded with 1,486 containers carrying about 25 tonnes of hazardous nitric acid.</p>
<p>"We observed that the emission of Nitrogen Dioxide from the MV X-PRESS PEARL was massive. With the emission of Nitrogen Dioxide gas in the rainy season, there could be slight acid rains," Dharshani Lahandapura, Chairperson of Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), was quoted as saying by news website newsfirst.lk on Friday.</p>
<p>Especially, the people in the close proximity to the coastal belt, should remain vigilant and ensure that you do not expose yourself to rain these days, the official said.</p>
<p>MEPA said that the blaze has been brought under control to a great extent and the authority is taking all appropriate measures to conduct beach clean-up procedures as soon as possible to avert the risks of pollution caused due to the fire in the cargo ship.</p>
<p>The density of the flames is reducing. Two tug boats are still engaged in firefighting missions and boundary calls. Vessels from the Indian Coast Guard and tug boats from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Sri Lanka Navy are monitoring the situation, Lahandapura was quoted as saying in the report.</p>
<p>Lahandapura said they are closely monitoring the situation and there is no sign of any oil spill.</p>
<p>India on Tuesday dispatched ICG Vaibhav, ICG Dornier and Tug Water Lilly to help the Sri Lankan Navy extinguish the fire on the container ship.</p>
<p>India's specialised pollution response vessel Samudra Prahari will reach on Saturday to augment pollution control efforts, the Colombo Gazette reported on Friday.</p>
<p>Updating the joint fire fighting efforts, the Indian High Commission here said that at present, heavy smoke has been observed only near the accommodation/superstructure area in the aft portion of the ship and is being tackled, the report said.</p>
<p>Overall, the MV X-Press Pearl is currently assessed as being stable and not having issues with watertight integrity.</p>
<p>External fire-fighting using foam and boundary cooling by sea-water along the entire length of vessel from either side is under progress and continuous monitoring of vessel's draught, list conditions and presence of hazardous and noxious substances overboard is being undertaken.</p>
<p>"Quantity of combustible material onboard is estimated to be limited. The ICG ships will continue to assess the situation and the decision to board or approach closer to the vessel will be taken after fully dousing the fire and undertaking sufficient boundary cooling, the Indian mission said.</p>
<p>The High Commission said that containers that fell from the vessel were identified and threat assessment for navigation safety have already been carried out and shared with the relevant Sri Lankan authorities, according to the report.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Navy Commander Nishantha Ulugetenne on Friday said there is no threat of the vessel breaking into two and the ship is now largely stable.</p>
<p>All 25 crew members of the ship - of Indian, Chinese, Filipino and Russian nationality - were rescued on Tuesday after a 'fire alarm' dispatch was sent.<br />

<p>History was created on this day 68 years ago when Sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand climbed Mount Everest, 29,029 feet above sea level. </p>
<p>They were part of a British expedition. Mr Norgay and Mr Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11:30 AM on May 29,1953,  but the world came to know of their achievement only on June 2, the day of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation.</p>
<p>And to commemorate their achievement, Nepal decided to celebrate International Everest Day every year on May 29. </p>
<p>The day was observed for the first time in 2008, the year Edmund Hillary died.</p>
<p>On this day, a series of memorial events and processions take place in Nepal's capital Kathmandu and the Everest region. International Everest Day is also a crucial annual event for Nepal's mountain tourism. </p>
<p>Among the participants in the events are ministers, climbers, tourism entrepreneurs, and government officials. This year, with the fear of novel coronavirus looming large, the celebrations are expected to be low-key.</p>
<p>Mount Everest attracts climbers, including highly experienced mountaineers, every year from across the globe. The British named it Mount Everest after Sir George Everest, a 19th-century British surveyor of South Asia.</p>
<p><strong>Routes:</strong></p>
<p>There are two main routes mountaineers take to climb the Chomo-Lungma, or "Mother Goddess of the Land," as the Tibetans call it. </p>
<p>One approaches the summit from the southeast in Nepal, known as the standard route. The other one is from the north in Tibet. On the standard route, it may not pose many climbing challenges but altitude sickness, weather, wind, as well as significant hazards from avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall can make a mountaineer's life a living hell.</p>
<p><strong>The First Attempt</strong></p>
<p>The year was 1921 and it was none other than a British expedition that attempted scaling Mount Everest the first time. </p>
<p>They trekked almost 645 kilometres across the Tibetan Plateau before a strong storm forced them to abort the trek. However, those who were part of the expedition - among them British explorer and mountaineer, George Leigh Mallory, who was a leading member of early expeditions to Mount Everest -saw what looked like a feasible route up the peak. </p>
<p>Mr. Mallory, when asked by a journalist why he wanted to scale Mount Everest, said: "Because it's there."</p>
<p>The 1953 success of the ninth British expedition came after a near-miraculous achievement of a Swiss expedition a year earlier. Raymond Lambert and Mr Norgay, the two climbers, reached 28,210 feet, just below the south Summit, but had to abort their ascent after they fell short of supplies.</p>

<p>The United States on Friday announced punitive measures against Belarus targeting the regime of strongman President Alexander Lukashenko, who met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin amid a global outcry over the forced diversion of a European plane.</p>
<p>White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki called for "a credible international investigation into the events of May 23," which she called "a direct affront to international norms."</p>
<p>Belarus scrambled a military jet to divert a Ryanair plane and arrested 26-year-old opposition journalist and activist Roman Protasevich who was onboard, triggering a global outcry.</p>
<p>The White House announced it was working with the European Union on a list of targeted sanctions against key members of Lukashenko's regime.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, economic sanctions against nine Belarusian state-owned enterprises, reimposed by Washington in April following a crackdown on pro-democracy protests, will come into effect on June 3.</p>
<p>Further US moves on Belarus could target "those that support corruption, the abuse of human rights, and attacks on democracy," Psaki said.</p>
<p>The White House also issued a "Do Not Travel" warning for Belarus to US citizens, and warned American passenger planes to "exercise extreme caution" if considering flying over Belarusian airspace.</p>
<p>The European Union has also urged EU-based carriers to avoid Belarusian airspace.</p>
<p>However President Vladimir Putin celebrated Russia's close ties with Belarus on Friday as he hosted Lukashenko in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.</p>
<p>With observers closely watching the talks to see how far the Kremlin would go to support the regime, the Russian leader said he was "very glad" to see Lukashenko and agreed with him the Western reaction was an "outburst of emotion".</p>
<p><strong>'Rock the boat'</strong></p>
<p>Lukashenko complained the West was seeking to stir unrest in Belarus.</p>
<p>"An attempt is underway to rock the boat to reach the level of last August," he said, referring to anti-regime protests following a disputed election.</p>
<p>"It's clear what these Western friends want from us."</p>
<p>The Belarus strongman, who arrived with a briefcase, said he wanted to show Putin "some documents" related to the Ryanair incident and thanked him for his support in the latest standoff with the West.</p>
<p>The talks lasted for more than five hours but their results were not announced.</p>
<p>Over the past years Lukashenko has had a volatile relationship with Moscow, playing it off against the West and ruling out outright unification with Russia.</p>
<p>But after the Ryanair plane incident his options appear to be limited.</p>
<p>Putin and the Belarus leader have met regularly since August, when historic protests broke out against Lukashenko's nearly three-decade rule.</p>
<p>The 66-year-old waged a ruthless crackdown on his opponents and has leaned increasingly on the Russian president amid condemnation from the West.</p>
<p>Several people died during the unrest in Belarus, thousands were detained, and hundreds reported torture in prison.</p>
<p>Sunday's plane diversion was a dramatic escalation, with EU leaders accusing Minsk of essentially hijacking a European flight to arrest Protasevich.</p>
<p><strong>Technical reasons</strong></p>
<p>The overflight ban has led to several cancellations of air journeys between Russia and Europe, after Russian authorities rejected plans that would have skipped Belarusian airspace.</p>
<p>Russia insists the cancellations are purely "technical," but they have raised concerns that Moscow could be systematically refusing to let European airlines land if they avoid Belarus.</p>
<p>The Kremlin criticized the flight ban as politically motivated and dangerous, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calling it "completely irresponsible".</p>
<p>EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the bloc was monitoring whether this was a broader policy from Russia, but Moscow insisted the disruptions were in no way political.</p>
<p>Belarus authorities claimed to have received a bomb threat against the Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius carrying the dissident.</p>
<p>Minsk said it demanded the flight land in the Belarus capital based on the message it said was sent from a ProtonMail address by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.</p>
<p>Protasevich, who helped organize the demonstrations against Lukashenko's rule last year, was arrested along with Russian girlfriend Sofia Sapega, 23, after the plane landed in the city.</p>
<p><strong>'Braver'</strong></p>
<p>Borrell has said proposals are "on the table" to target key sectors of the Belarusian economy including its oil products and potash sectors.</p>
<p>Belarus opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Friday urged the EU to be "braver" and impose more sanctions against the Minsk regime.</p>
<p>After meeting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in The Hague, Tikhanovskaya said measures being discussed by EU countries did not go far enough.</p>
<p>EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on Friday warned Lukashenko that "it is time to change course." </p>
<p>"No amount of repression, brutality or coercion will bring any legitimacy to your authoritarian regime," she said.</p>
<p>The European Commission president also wrote to the opposition offering a three-billion-euro package to support "a democratic Belarus" if Lukashenko steps down.</p>

<p>Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro visited two indigenous reservations in the Amazon on Thursday for the first time as head of state, despite protests from some tribal leaders against his drive to open up their protected lands to commercial mining.</p>
<p>Bolsonaro, flanked by army officers and wearing a feather head-dress, watched members of the local Tukano community perform a ritual dance at the Balaio reservation, where he inaugurated a bridge.</p>
<p>Regional indigenous leaders from the upper reaches of the Rio Negro river said they were not invited to see Bolsonaro and that he only met with unrepresentative chiefs in a photo opportunity for his re-election campaign next year.</p>
<p>"Our institution is three decades old but we were not included in the president's agenda or any dialogue on public polices for the region," the Federation of Rio Negro Indigenous Organizations said in a statement. "He met with self-proclaimed leaders to produce fake news."</p>
<p>The president's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>
<p>The wooden bridge that Bolsonaro inaugurated was built by the Brazilian army on a road that runs to the border with Venezuela, passing through the Balaio reservation, where major reserves of niobium have been found.</p>
<p>The metal is used to make light-weight steel for jet engines and other special applications. Bolsonaro has regularly mentioned its value in speeches about the untapped riches of the Amazon that Brazil must exploit.</p>
<p>The Balaio reservation is above the Rio Negro at the north-western tip of Brazil bordering Colombia and Venezuela.</p>
<p>Bolsonaro later visited and stayed overnight at a military frontier post in Maturacá, which is located at the western end of the Yanomami reservation, the largest in Brazil.</p>
<p>The reservation's eastern section in the state of Roraima has been invaded by more than 20,000 illegal gold miners, who have been emboldened by Bolsonaro's support for the legalization of wildcat mining in Brazil.</p>
<p>Yanomami leaders deplored the far-right president's visit to their reservation and repeated their calls for authorities to expel the miners.</p>
<p>"The government must urgently remove the invaders from our territories to safeguard our health and that of Mother Earth," they said in a letter to Bolsonaro.</p>
<p>"We do not accept the legalization of mining activities on our lands, because it will not bring the Yanomami any benefit," the letter signed by leaders from Maturacá said.</p>
<p>Bolsonaro's visit came the day after gold miners illegally prospecting on indigenous lands along the Tapajos river in the Amazon shot at a Munduruku village and burned down the house of one of its leaders.</p>
<p>The lower house of Brazil's Congress, where Bolsonaro supporters have a majority, is currently considering legislation proposed by the government that would open the door to commercial mining and agriculture on indigenous reservations.</p>

<p>California will launch a new probe into the high-profile case of a death row inmate convicted of the murder of four people who have maintained for decades that he was framed by police, Governor Gavin Newsom said Friday.</p>
<p>Kevin Cooper was found guilty of the 1983 slayings in a suburb outside Los Angeles and was hours away from execution in 2004 when public figures from Reverend Jesse Jackson to Denzel Washington lobbied then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for clemency.</p>
<p>Schwarzenegger denied those calls but Cooper's execution was called off at the last minute by an appeals court.</p>
<p>Subsequent governors have ordered new DNA testing of evidence using the latest technologies.</p>
<p>On Friday, Newsom ordered a "full review" of Cooper's trial and subsequent appeals, as well as the original case and evidence including the recently conducted DNA tests, in order to decide on the convict's clemency petition.</p>
<p>Cooper had escaped from prison shortly before Douglas and Peggy Ryen, both 41, their 10-year-old daughter Jessica and her 11-year-old friend Christopher Hughes were found stabbed and slashed to death at the Ryens' home in Chino Hills, California.</p>
<p>Multiple witnesses reported seeing three white men in bloodied clothes driving a car stolen from the Ryens' home on the night of the murders.</p>
<p>A woman who believed her boyfriend was involved came forward to police, having found blood on his clothes and a hatchet similar to the one used at the scene missing from his tool rack.</p>
<p>But police arrested Cooper, who is Black, and he was found guilty by a jury in 1985.</p>
<p>Cooper, now 63, and his defense team allege that police planted evidence linking him to the scene and destroyed or tampered with evidence pointing to other suspects as the case grew in infamy and pressure for a conviction increased.</p>
<p>While Cooper's execution was blocked, judges refused him the right to appeal, leading to five judges writing in a dissent that: "The State of California may be about to execute an innocent man."</p>
<p>Vice President Kamala Harris, during her time as California's attorney general, has been drawn into the case, accused by her critics of blocking new DNA testing. </p>
<p>In his executive order Friday, Newsom wrote that "questions about the evidence introduced at trial against Mr. Cooper have come to light" and that he has reviewed the latest DNA test results.</p>
<p>Under the order -- which does not take a position on Cooper's guilt or innocence -- a law firm will be employed to assist California's parole board is investigating the case and presenting its review.</p>
<p>The last execution in California occurred in 2006, and Newsom has already pledged no executions will take place while he is governor.</p>

<p>The images show the result of a collaboration between Kellogg Company and LGBT lobby group Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), with $3 from every purchase going to the organization.</p>
<p>“Together With Pride cereal marks the latest chapter in a years long partnership with GLAAD and is the evolution of the much-loved All Together cereal, which previously was only available online,” said Doug VanDeVelde, General Manager of Kellogg U.S. Cereal Category. “Our delicious new recipe features berry-flavored, rainbow hearts dusted with edible glitter. We can’t wait for fans to try our latest limited run.”</p>
<p>Kelloggs added that the marketing ploy was part of their “commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion” while GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said the partnership “will create opportunities for homes and families to have conversations about the importance of acceptance, compassion and understanding, especially when it comes to LGBTQ+ youth.”</p>
<p>Some responded to the news by joking that now even cereals were turning the frogs gay.</p>

<p>In 2021, people who engage in such “defamatory coverage” or merely refuse to bake a gay pride cake are publicly shamed, deplatformed, attacked, fired, sued in court, or a combination of all five.</p>

<p>The remains of 215 children have been discovered on the grounds of a former boarding school set up more than a century ago to assimilate Canada's indigenous people, according to a local tribe.</p>
<p>A specialist used ground-penetrating radar to confirm the remains of the students who attended the school near Kamloops, British Columbia, the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc tribe said in a statement late Thursday.</p>
<p>"Some were as young as three years old," said chief Rosanne Casimir, calling it "an unthinkable loss that was spoken about but never documented" by school administrators.</p>
<p>Its preliminary findings are expected to be released in a report next month, she said.</p>
<p>In the meantime, the tribe is working with the coroner and museums to try to shed further light on the horrific discovery and find any records of these deaths.</p>
<p>It is also reaching out to the students' home communities across British Columbia and beyond.</p>
<p>"My heart breaks for the families and communities impacted by this tragic news," Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett said in a tweet, offering government support for their "healing as we honour loved ones lost."</p>
<p>The Kamloops Indian Residential School was the largest of 139 boarding schools set up in the late 19th century, with up to 500 students registered and attending at any one time.</p>
<p>It was operated by the Catholic church on behalf of the Canadian government from 1890 to 1969.</p>
<p>Some 150,000 Indian, Inuit and Metis youngsters in total were forcibly enrolled in these schools, where students were physically and sexually abused by headmasters and teachers who stripped them of their culture and language.</p>
<p>Today those experiences are blamed for a high incidence of poverty, alcoholism and domestic violence, as well as high suicide rates, in their communities.</p>
<p>A truth and reconciliation commission identified the names of, or information about, at least 3,200 children who died from abuse or neglect while attending a residential school. The exact number remains unknown.</p>
<p>At the Kamloops school, the principal in 1910 had raised concerns that federal funding was insufficient to properly feed the students, according to the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc statement.</p>
<p>Ottawa formally apologized in 2008 for what the commission later termed a "cultural genocide" as part of a Can$1.9 billion (US$1.6 billion) settlement with former students.</p>

<p>The World Health Organization warned Friday that efforts to uncover the Covid-19 pandemic's origins were being hampered by politics, insisting scientists needed space to work on solving the mystery.</p>
<p>"We would ask that we separate the science from the politics, and let us get on with finding the answers that we need in a proper, positive atmosphere," WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan told reporters.</p>
<p>"This whole process is being poisoned by politics," he warned.</p>
<p>The UN health agency has been facing intensifying pressure for a new, more in-depth investigation of where Covid-19 came from, but so far there is no timeline for the next stage in the probe.</p>
<p>US President Joe Biden this week ordered the US intelligence community to investigate whether the Covid-19 virus first emerged in China from an animal source or from a laboratory accident.</p>
<p>The move hints at growing impatience with waiting for a conclusive WHO investigation into how the pandemic that has killed more than 3.5 million people worldwide began.</p>
<p>During an ongoing meeting of WHO member states, European Union countries and a range of others also pressed for clarity on the next steps in the organisation's efforts to solve the mystery, seen as vital to averting future pandemics.</p>
<p><strong>"No timeline"</strong></p>
<p>But the UN health agency said earlier Friday it was still waiting for recommendations from a team of WHO technical experts on how to move forward.</p>
<p>"The technical team will prepare a proposal for the next studies that will need to be carried out and will present that to the director-general," spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told reporters.</p>
<p>"He will then work with member states about the next steps," she said, acknowledging "there is no timeline".</p>
<p>The WHO finally managed to send a team of independent, international experts to Wuhan in January, more than a year after Covid-19 first surfaced there in late 2019, to help probe the pandemic origins.</p>
<p>But in their long-delayed report published in late March, the international team and their Chinese counterparts drew no firm conclusions, instead ranking a number of hypotheses according to how likely they believed they were.</p>
<p>- 'Impossible position' -</p>
<p>The report said the virus jumping from bats to humans via an intermediate animal was the most probable scenario, while a theory involving the virus leaking from a laboratory was "extremely unlikely".</p>
<p>But the investigation and report have faced criticism for lacking transparency and access, and for not evaluating the lab-leak theory more deeply -- a mere 440 words of the report were dedicated to discussing and dismissing it.</p>
<p>WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has also continued to insist that all theories remain on the table and further investigation is needed.</p>
<p>Long dismissed as a right-wing conspiracy theory, and vehemently rejected by Beijing, the idea that Covid-19 emerged from a lab leak in Wuhan in China has been gaining increasing momentum in the United States.</p>
<p>While not suggesting that a lab leak was necessarily the source, a number of prominent international scientists have said a deeper, more scientific look at the theory was needed.</p>
<p>"Every country and every entity is free to pursue their own particular theories of origin... It's a free world," Ryan said.</p>
<p>But he complained that the discourse around the origins search, and around WHO's role in it, was making it difficult to focus on the science.</p>
<p>"Putting WHO in a position like it has been put in is very unfair to the science we're trying to carry out," he said.</p>
<p>"It puts us, as an organisation, frankly in an impossible position to deliver the answers that the world wants."</p>

<p>US Senate Republicans on Friday blocked creation of an independent commission to investigate the deadly riot by Donald Trump supporters at the Capitol in Washington, a move aimed at preventing a bipartisan probe ahead of 2022 midterm elections.</p>
<p>Ten Republicans would have needed to join all 50 Democrats to advance the measure, which had already cleared the House of Representatives with modest bipartisan support.</p>
<p>But only six Republicans voted in favour, a result that demonstrated the deep divide in Congress and the nation nearly five months after the violent January 6 assault -- and the influence that the former president continues to exert on the Republican Party.</p>
<p>Republican Senators Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins were among those who bucked their leadership to vote in favour of moving to a final vote on the commission, which had the support of President Joe Biden and several former Republican lawmakers.</p>
<p>But powerful Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell argued that the panel would have been a purely partisan exercise that would add nothing to the Department of Justice and congressional investigations already underway.</p>
<p>Republicans argue that more than 400 people have been arrested for their part in the unrest, and that those court cases will help shed sufficient light on what happened.</p>
<p>In the House of Representatives, 35 of the chamber's 211 Republicans joined Democrats in support of the commission that was to be modelled after the panel convened in the wake of the 9/11 attacks of 2001 and which had strong bipartisan support.</p>
<p>Defenders argued the latest commission would have included five members chosen by the Democrats and five by the Republicans, with subpoena power resting with both sides.</p>

<p>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson acted "unwisely" over funding arrangements for a lavish makeover of his Downing Street flat, but was not guilty of any impropriety, his ethics advisor concluded Friday.</p>
<p>The finding by Christopher Geidt, the UK government's newly appointed adviser on ministerial standards, does not entirely lift the cloud over the "wallpapergate" affair with several other probes still under way.</p>
<p>It is also likely to fuel questions about why civil servants, at Johnson's direction, were busy working on creating a White House-style trust to manage the Downing Street complex in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic last year.</p>
<p>Publishing an annual report on ministerial interests, Geidt found that Johnson "knew nothing" about how the designer makeover of his private quarters was funded, noting the works had begun as he was critically ill with Covid-19 in early April 2020.</p>
<p>The prime minister should have shown more curiosity later but believed that the putative charitable trust would take care of the invoices, Geidt said.</p>
<p>Officials failed to brief Johnson that the proposed trust was proving hard to get off the ground, he said, and the invoices were in fact settled by the Conservative Party and a wealthy party donor.</p>
<p>"Given the level of the prime minister's expectations for the trust to deliver on the objects he had set, this was a significant failing," the advisor's report said.</p>
<p>"Instead, the prime minister -- unwisely, in my view -- allowed the refurbishment of the apartment at No 11 Downing Street to proceed without more rigorous regard for how this would be funded."<br />
'No conflict of interest'</p>
<p>Johnson only became aware of the issue in February this year, Geidt said, after press reports raised questions about funding for the redecoration -- which reportedly stretched to 200,000 pounds ($284,000), far above an annual government allowance.</p>
<p>He settled the bill himself in March, and Geidt said he was "content that no conflict -- or reasonably perceived conflict -- arises as a result of these interests".</p>
<p>A Downing Street spokesperson said the adviser's report showed Johnson had adhered to the UK ministerial code "at all times" and stressed that no taxpayer money was used in the redecoration, above the allowance of 30,000 pounds.</p>
<p>Breaches of the code are normally considered a matter for resignation -- Geidt's predecessor quit when Johnson refused to fire Home Secretary Priti Patel over a finding that she had bullied her officials.</p>
<p>Geidt meanwhile was grilled by opposition MPs two weeks ago on whether he is truly independent of Johnson.</p>
<p>The advisor is firmly an establishment figure: a former army officer and diplomat, he was private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II for 10 years to 2017, and sits in the House of Lords.</p>
<p>Several parliamentary probes remain under way over the flat revamp. Most seriously for Johnson, Britain's Electoral Commission last month launched its own investigation.</p>
<p>The commission, which regulates political finance and can refer investigations to the police, said it had found "reasonable grounds to suspect that an offence or offences may have occurred".</p>

<p><strong>More prominent scientific figures have thrown their weight behind calls for investigating the lab leak theory as the cause of the coronavirus pandemic, with some revealing they were previously ostracised for presenting research that suggested the scenario was realistic.</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9628677/Call-inquiry-theory-Covid-emerged-Wuhan-lab.html">The Daily Mail reports</a> that British vaccine researcher and professor of oncology Angus Dalgleish struggled to find a publisher for his paper suggesting the virus’s spike protein contains artificially inserted sequences.</p>
<p>The report notes that the professor “said the research was shunned by the scientific community, who did not want to threaten China or be seen to be agreeing with President Donald Trump — who was a big advocate for the theory the virus was leaked from a lab at the time.”</p>
<p>Dalgleish noted in an interview with the <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/uk-scientist-feels-vindicated-as-focus-turns-to-wuhan-lab-h9x7jtvnj">Times of London</a> (paywall) that his research has led him to believe that “The changes [in the bat coronavirus] required to infect humans are extremely unlikely to have occurred naturally.”</p>
<p>“I was basically ostracised. I was fearful — really frightened by the way I was being treated. I was told I was not an expert on coronaviruses and I should just shut up,” the professor claimed.</p>
<p>He added that he and his research team “couldn’t believe people with whom we’d collaborated and published papers with in the past would shun us — I was warned I was out of my depth and I shouldn’t get into this and I’d make a fool of myself.”</p>
<p>In addition, yet more scientific figures have demanded that the lab leak theory be investigated, with professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Cambridge Ravi Gupta noting that the scenario has <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/05/27/call-un-inquiry-investigate-theory-covid-19-escaped-chinese/">not been ‘adequately explored’.</a></p>
<p>Meanwhile Harvard epidemiologist Professor Marc Lipsitch asserted that the theory is not a ‘fringe position’, and “remains plausible enough that it should be looked into rigorously.”</p>
<p>Professor David Relman, a microbiologist at Stanford University, also stated said the theory needs to be further investigated.</p>
<p>Relman said that “Ideally, an investigation would rely on an international consortium of scientists under the auspices of many national academies of science working in partnership, in collaboration with an international governance entity, the UN Secretary General’s Office, or something of that sort.”</p>
<p>In addition, the State Department official who was leading an investigation into the origin of COVID-19 before it was <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/26/report-biden-admin-shut-down-investigation-into-wuhan-lab-leak-theory/">shut down by The Biden administration</a> has revealed that his team found “almost no evidence” to support the claim that the virus emerged naturally.</p>
<p>Appearing on Fox News, David Asher said “We were finding that despite the claims of our scientific community, including the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Fauci’s NIAID organization, there was almost no evidence that supported a natural, zoonotic evolution or source of COVID-19.”</p>
<p>Asher continued, “The data disproportionately stacked up as we investigated that it was coming out of a lab or some supernatural source.”</p>
<p>Referring to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Asher said “That was the epicenter of synthetic biology in the People’s Republic of China, and they were up to some very hairy stuff with synthetic biology and so-called gain-of-function techniques.”</p>
<p>“To say this came out of a zoonotic situation, it’s ridiculous,” Asher urged.</p>

New York Times COVID Reporter Says It’s “Racist” to Discuss Wuhan Lab Leak Theory

<p><strong>A New York Times reporter who specializes in COVID-19 coverage tweeted that it was “racist” to even talk about the Wuhan lab leak theory.</strong></p>
<p>The lab leak issue has received a wave of attention following the Biden’s administration’s announcement that a 90 day investigation would be conducted into its veracity.</p>
<p>The NYT itself also reported yesterday that the U.S. intelligence community has been sitting on a “raft” of evidence pertaining to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.</p>
<p>However, Apoorva Mandavilli, who in her bio says she reports for the NYT “mainly” on COVID, asserted in a tweet that even discussing the issue was “racist.”</p>
<p>“Someday we will stop talking about the lab leak theory and maybe even admit its racist roots. But alas, that day is not yet here,” tweeted Mandavilli.</p>

<p>For nearly a year, President Donald Trump was repeatedly smeared as a racist by the media merely for pointing out that the virus originated in China.</p>
<p>The World Health Organization also <a href="https://summit.news/2020/01/31/who-orders-countries-not-to-engage-in-stigma-or-discrimination-in-response-to-coronavirus-outbreak/">advised countries</a> not to impose border controls in the early weeks of the pandemic so as to avoid the “stigmatization” of Chinese people.</p>
<p>This advice was taken by the British government, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s former chief adviser <a href="https://summit.news/2021/05/27/boris-johnson-refused-to-close-borders-to-stop-covid-because-he-thought-it-would-be-racist/">revealing earlier this week</a> that Johnson didn’t want to shut down the border for fear of being labeled “racist.”</p>

<p><strong>60 per cent of police and military say they will support populist Marine Le Pen in next year’s French presidential election, with the number even higher among active duty police.</strong></p>
<p>A survey published by the Centre for Political Research of Sciences Po (Cevipof) found that a plurality of 44 per cent of police and military would vote for Le Pen in the first round of the election.</p>
<p>In a hypothetical second round run off against President Emmanuel Macron, this number rises to 60 per cent, a three per cent increase on the 57 per cent figure she achieved in 2017.</p>
<p>Among active duty police officers, support for the National Rally leader rises to a massive 74 per cent.</p>
<p>Around 48 per cent of police say Le Pen “understands the problems of people like us” compared to just 13 per cent who say the same of Macron.</p>
<p>“A report released by the newspaper Le Figaro this week details the extent of attacks on police as they carry out their duties, claiming that last year alone 8,719 police officers and gendarmes were injured and 11 officers killed,” reports <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2021/05/13/large-majority-of-police-support-marine-le-pen-for-president/">Breitbart</a>.</p>
<p>“In the first three months of 2021, the newspaper states that 727 officers have been injured during operations, and notes that an officer is assaulted on duty every hour in France, on average.”</p>
<p>Police, ambulance workers and fire crews are routinely attacked when they try to enter Islamist no go zones, despite the media still claiming they don’t exist.</p>
<p>Last weekend, a group of anonymous active duty military personnel wrote a letter warning Macron of a “civil war” in the country due to his concessions to Islamists and the far-left.</p>
<p>“If a civil war breaks out, the military will maintain order on its soil because it will be asked to do so,” stated the letter.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://summit.news/2021/04/30/poll-majority-of-french-agree-with-military-generals-that-the-country-is-heading-towards-civil-war/">poll</a> conducted last month found that the majority of French citizens agree that the country is headed towards civil war.</p>

<p><strong>The federal health agency that has been headed by Dr. Anthony Fauci, now the Biden administration’s chief medical adviser, spent more than $400,000 to fund several experiments in which the scalps of aborted foetuses were grafted on to live mice and rats.</strong></p>
<p>The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which Fauci has headed since the 1980s, has funded a dozen or so researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, where their findings were <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-71548-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">published in the journal Nature, last September.</a></p>
<p>According to the scientific journal which was titled “Development of humanised mouse and rat models with full-thickness human skin and autologous immune cells”, the purpose of the experiments was to determine the predisposition of human skin to develop infections utilising mouse and rat “models.”</p>
<p>The experiments involved “transplantation of full-thickness human foetal skin” to “provide a platform for studying human skin infections.”</p>
<p>The researchers wrote that the “human skin tissues” that were used in the experiments were taken from “scalp and dorsum” of “donors”, which were foetuses that had been aborted.</p>

<p>One source, The American Spectator, wrote that the aborted babies, which were used in the experiments came from the Magee-Women’s Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Tissue Bank. It is worth questioning whether the mothers of these babies are aware that their deceased children are being used in these disturbing experiments.</p>
<p>The researchers wrote: “Full-thickness human foetal skin was processed via removal of excess fat tissues attached to the subcutaneous layer of the skin, then engrafted over the rib cage, where the mouse skin was previously excised.”</p>
<p>Additionally, the researchers co-engrafted the same foetus’s lymphoid tissues and hematopoietic stem cells from the liver, so that the rodent models were humanised with organs and skin from the same child.</p>
<p>The “full-thickness foetal skin” was taken from foetuses aborted at Magee-Women’s Hospital at 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy. According to the journal, human hair was evident on the mice by 12 weeks: “In the scalp grafts, fine human hair can be seen growing long and dark surrounded by the short white hairs of the mouse.”</p>
<p>In an abstract, researchers noted:</p>

<p>“The human skin provides the first line of host protection against environmental injury and host defense against pathogens. Several emerging pathogens, including community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA), target the skin for infection and disease. Also, vector-borne infectious diseases such as Lyme disease and dengue fever are transmitted via inoculation into the skin by ticks and mosquitos, respectively. Interactions between keratinocytes, skin fibroblasts, and cutaneous immune cells are involved in initiating the systemic immune response and abrogate pathogen replication and dissemination to other sites of replication. Thus, the skin provides an ideal vaccination target for inducing immunity against various pathogens, as reflected by the development of several novel vaccine technologies directed at the skin, including skin-patch intradermal vaccines.”</p>

<p>The researchers added: “Rats are a major model specie for long-term (greater than one year) studies; thus, humanized rat models that combine human skin, human immune cells, and human lymphoid structures are being explored for use in long-term in vivo studies of human skin-immune interactions.”</p>
<p>Alternative news outlet <em><a href="https://justthenews.com/government/federal-agencies/anthony-faucis-agency-funded-experiments-grafted-aborted-fetal-scalps" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Just the News</a></em> reported that the researchers associated with the experimentation did not respond to requests for comment, and the NIAID and Fauci did not respond to questions regarding funding for the project, as well as “how often the NIAID funds projects using aborted foetal remains.”</p>
<p>According to federal expenditure records, Fauci’s agency provided $430,000 in funding to the disturbing research project between 2018 and 2019.</p>
<p>The questionable research, which was published last year, generated very little attention “outside of pro-life circles”, <em><a href="https://justthenews.com/government/federal-agencies/anthony-faucis-agency-funded-experiments-grafted-aborted-fetal-scalps" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Just the News</a> reported.</em> Additionally, the research was mentioned at a Pennsylvania state legislative hearing on foetal research and experimentation, which took place earlier this month.</p>
<p>During the hearing, David Daleiden, a pro-life activist and undercover investigative journalist noted for his exposure, in undercover videos, of Planned Parenthood executives discussing the exchange and possible opportunities for selling or buying foetal body parts, denounced the research. During his testimony, Daleiden accused the scientists of “scalping 5-month-old aborted foetuses and grafting their scalps onto the back of lab rats.”</p>
<p><strong>It is incredibly worrying and disturbing that these human experiments are taking place, especially on the bodies of aborted foetuses, all of which has been funded by Fauci, whom many governments and the media around the world turn to for Covid guidance…</strong></p>
