Google adds new “fact checking” to News, will push users to “credible” sources

<p><strong>Google has <a href="https://blog.google/products/news/fact-checking-misinformation-google-features/">announced</a> new features for Search and News, aimed at directing users to “credible sources” of information.</strong></p> <p>Last June, the company started applying labels to search results for “<a href="https://reclaimthenet.org/google-starts-adding-no-reliable-sources-tag-to-some-search-engine-results/">rapidly evolving topics</a>” such as breaking news and viral videos. The labels suggest checking back later when there are more details.</p> <p>Starting from today, in the US, users will start seeing more labels to help access if the information they are seeing is credible, as determined by Google.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter"><img alt="" class="wp-image-83701" src="https://reclaimthenet.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/reclaim-2022-04-01-at-14.36.41.png" /></figure> </div> <p>The labels will suggest things such as looking up the author of a story and checking the date of publication.</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter"><img alt="" class="wp-image-83699" src="https://reclaimthenet.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/reclaim-2022-04-01-at-14.37.09.png" /></figure> </div> <p>In Google News, the company added a new label for Top Stories that have been cited multiple times by other outlets. Google will also use the label to indicate original reporting.</p> <p>The new features are currently only available in the US and only in English. The tech giant plans a global rollout in a few weeks.</p> <p>In another <a href="https://blog.google/inside-google/company-announcements/warsaw-announcing-more-support-ukraine/">blog post</a> announcing new initiatives, Alphabet and Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said: “We saw how many Ukrainians turned to Search to find up-to-date information, including where to find shelter or humanitarian aid, and relied on air raid alerts on their phones.”</p> <div class="SvNjf8KP"><a href="https://www.patriotcollectibles.com/" target="_blank"><img src="https://api.directus.libertycdn.com/uploads/_/originals/385x453.jpg" /></a></div> <p>To tackle the issue of “misinformation” and “disinformation,” Google will roll out new features, including Transparency Labels on YouTube and Info Panel in the local languages in Central and Eastern Europe.</p> <p>Pichai said Alphabet and Google will invest another $10 million in partnerships with civil society organizations and think tanks for region-specific research into disinformation and misinformation. One major Catholic leader, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, spoke with an LGBT flag behind him:</p> <div> <p>German Cardinal Reinhard Marx said in an interview published on Thursday that the Catechism of the Catholic Church is “not set in stone” and “one is also allowed to doubt what it says.”</p> <p>The cardinal made the comments in a seven-page spread in the March 31 edition of the weekly current affairs magazine Stern, reported CNA Deutsch, CNA’s German-language news partner.</p> <p>Marx, the archbishop of Munich and Freising, is one of the most influential Catholic leaders in Europe, serving as a member of Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinal Advisers and president of the Vatican’s Council for the Economy.</p> <p>He spoke about the Catechism in response to a question about “how homosexual, queer, or trans people are to be accommodated in Catholic teaching.”</p> <p>He said: “An inclusive ethic that we envision is not about being lax — as some claim. It is about something else: encounter at eye level, respect for the other. The value of love is shown in the relationship; in not making the other person an object, in not using or humiliating the other person, in being faithful and dependable to each other. The Catechism is not set in stone. One may also doubt what it says.”</p> <p>He went on: “We discussed these questions during the family synod, but there was reluctance to set something down. Even then I said: There are people living in an intimate love relationship that is expressed sexually. Are we really going to say that this is worthless? Sure, there are people who want to see sexuality limited to procreation, but what do they say to people who can’t have children?”</p> <p>Marx’s comments are part of a growing push within the German Church for changes to the Catechism’s teaching on homosexuality.</p> <p>Earlier this month, Bishop Georg Bätzing, Marx’s successor as chairman of the German bishops’ conference, agreed with a journalist’s assertion that “no one” adhered to the Church’s teaching that sexuality should only be practiced within marriage.</p> <p>“That’s true,” Bätzing said. “And we have to somewhat change the Catechism on this matter. Sexuality is a gift from God. And not a sin.”</p> <p>He was speaking after participants in the German “Synodal Way” voted in favor of draft documents calling for same-sex blessings and the revision of Catholic teaching on homosexuality.</p> <p>In February, another prominent European Church leader, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, S.J., was asked by the German Catholic news agency KNA how he dealt “with the Church teaching that homosexuality is a sin.”</p> <p>He replied: “I believe that this is wrong. But I also believe that we are thinking ahead in doctrine here. The way the pope has expressed himself in the past, this can lead to a change in doctrine. Because I believe that the sociological-scientific foundation of this teaching is no longer correct.”</p> <p>Hollerich, the archbishop of Luxembourg, will play a central role in the upcoming Synod on Synodality in Rome, serving as relator general. He is also president of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE).</p> </div> <p>Now, nothing in this story is surprising (disturbing, yes, but not shocking).</p> <div data-testid="paragraph-11" readability="163.96237666703"> <p>Pope Francis just praised the pro-homosexual work of heretical priest, Fr. James Martin, who teaches that gay sex is accepted by God. As we read in <a href="https://www.americamagazine.org/faith/2021/06/27/james-martin-lgbt-ministry-pope-francis-240938">America Magazine</a>:</p> <blockquote readability="37"> <p>Pope Francis has again encouraged the ministry of James Martin, S.J., to L.G.B.T. persons, and with words that could also encourage others in this work. He did so on the eve of the Outreach 2021 L.G.B.T. Catholic ministry conference that took place by webinar this Saturday, June 26, of which the Jesuit priest was the main organizer.</p> <p>Some weeks ago, Father Martin, an editor at large at America Media, had informed the pope about the conference in a private mail and explained its purpose and then received a handwritten personal letter in Spanish from Francis, dated June 21, expressing his encouragement and support for this work.</p> <p>…</p> <p>His letter on the eve of Saturday’s outreach conference can be understood in this same light. Addressing him as “Querido Hermano” (“Dear brother”), Francis commends Father Martin for all this work, saying, “I want to thank you for your pastoral zeal and your ability to be close to people, with that closeness that Jesus had, and which reflects the closeness of God.”</p> <p>He reminds him, “Our Heavenly Father approaches with love each one of his children, each and every one [of them]. His heart is to open to each and every one. He is Father.”</p> </blockquote> <p>Fr. James Martin believes and teaches that sodomite sex is accepted by God. For example, Martin speaks of his sodomite friend, Mark, and his “husband”, <a href="https://www.catholic.com/audio/cot/exposing-fr-martins-slippery-tactics">stating</a>:</p> <blockquote readability="14"> <p>I continually come back to my friend Mark and his husband. And I continually say, and maybe this is a failure of mine to imagine someone else, maybe it’s arrogant. But I have a hard time imagining how even the most traditionalist, homophobic, close-minded Catholic cannot look at my friend and say, “That is a loving act. And that is a form of love that I don’t understand, but that I have to reverence.” And maybe that’s why it’s hard for me to respond to some of these critics because I don’t understand that. That is maybe a failure in my imagination to understand how people cannot see that.</p> </blockquote> <p>James Martin’s entire message is that the Church needs to accept Sodom. And here we have the Pope himself praising this work of Sodom.</p> <p>Its official, for the first time in Catholic history, a pope has come out in support of homosexual “civil unions” which is really just secular marriage under a state. During an interview for a documentary which premiered at the Rome Film Festival, Francis <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pope-endorse-same-sex-civil-unions-eb3509b30ebac35e91aa7cbda2013de2">stated</a>:</p> <blockquote readability="8"> <p class="Component-root-0-2-61 Component-p-0-2-52">“Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God… You can’t kick someone out of a family, nor make their life miserable for this. <strong>What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered</strong>.”</p> </blockquote> <p>Of course, the priests who are acolytes of Sodom are praising Pope Francis for this, with priests of Sodom like Fr. James Martin saying: “The pope’s speaking positively about civil unions also sends a strong message to places where the church has opposed such laws”. This is coming from a priest who for years has been pushing for the idea of ‘building bridges’ between the Church and Sodom. Well, its obvious that that bridge has been built… and that it has been crossed. Of course, there are Catholic officials who are opposing this. Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island stated: “The pope’s statement clearly contradicts what has been the long-standing teaching of the church about same-sex unions … The church cannot support the acceptance of objectively immoral relationships.” And Ed Mechmann, director of public policy at the Archdiocese of New York, affirmed in a blog post that the pope had simply “made a serious mistake.”</p> <p>The Church has been utterly conquered by Sodom, and looking at the Second Jerusalem, I cannot help but reference St. John when he spoke of <em>Sodom and Egypt</em> when referring to that City on a Hill. Rome has become Egypt; for it is filled with the evils of pagandom; Sodom, for it is filled with the ways of that abysmal metropolis which was cut asunder by fire from Heaven. Will it take fire from heaven for the world to finally see that darkness they are embracing? Or perhaps another scourge will have to be used, a human scourge of armies of other nations more warlike than most, to invade Rome and bring about a horrific fury of insatiable rage to that city, such as when German mercenaries invaded Rome in 1527. What will it take? Only time will tell. But what we can tell are the fumes from the corrupt incense burning from the warped altars of Sodom’s temples, with people calling themselves Catholic when they are in reality members of the church of Satan.</p> <p>Many traditional Catholics will defend the Church, while at the same time not realizing, (or being too afraid to admit) that the Vatican, and the whole of the Catholic apparatus, has become a homosexual hornets nests. I myself have had experience with the homosexual infiltrators in the Catholic Church, and did two videos recounting my experiences:</p> <p><span class="embed-youtube">[embedded content]</span></p> <p><span class="embed-youtube">[embedded content]</span></p> <p>While we were doing some work in Texas we were told of a man named Msgr. Michael Yarbrough (also known as Michael Yarborough), of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and how he is a deviant priest who forcefully kissed a young man named Hector Escalante on the lips, and how he was supporting a pro homosexual group called Call to Action. Here is a photo of Msgr. Michael Yarbrough:</p> <p>Well, we decided that we were going to bait Msgr. Michael Yarbrough. I visited him in a confessional booth where I told him my age and apparently it registered an interest and he asked me if I wanted to come and hang out with him. He fell for the bait. I found it very odd that a priest of his high position, with a very busy schedule, would all of a sudden want to spend time with me.</p> <p>I accepted his offer, and gave him a call, and asked him if we would meet at a book store. He said that he preferred that we meet in his office. I found this quite disturbing because it was in his office where he kissed Hector Escalante. When I did research on Msgr. Michael Yarbrough, I found a 2002 report written in the San Antonio Express which <a href="http://www.bishop-accountability.org/news3/2002_04_28_Michael_PunishingThe_Fernandez_AND_Ortiz_Dietz_2.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>:</p> <blockquote readability="12"> <p>Hector Escalante complained that Monsignor Michael Yarbrough kissed him on the lips and groped him <strong>in his office</strong> in 1998 when Escalante was 27, on his last day on the job as a St. Matthew’s Parish employee.</p> <p>Yarbrough admitted kissing him but said Escalante misunderstood the gesture, which the priest said was common among men in his family. He denied groping Escalante.</p> </blockquote> <p>Imagine, a man kissing another man on the lips as “common.” Well, since Pope Francis now vocally supports sodomite “civil unions” I guess the forces of Sodom are “common” within the ecclesiastical system.</p> <p>For years we have seen how the Vatican covers up for sexual predators and deviants, heretics and debased theologians. We even investigated Fr. Robert L. Kincl, who was appointed by the Pope and had befriended us as a fan of Shoebat.com acting as conservative. In a private conversation with me, Kincl actually stated that he believes that homosexual fondling is permissible. Having been shocked at his remarks, I told Kincl:</p> <blockquote readability="10"> <p>How can you, as a priest, be so liberal toward such a sick evil as two men fondling each other, or as two men having a “relationship” just as long as they are not going with other men. It is evil and it is reprobate.</p> </blockquote> <p>I also told him:</p> <blockquote readability="11"> <p>It is not tolerable for you, as both a priest and a canon law judge, to be permissive to somebody having a homosexual relationship just as long as they are not being promiscuous with other men. It is deplorable, and in the words of St. Paul, “worthy of death” (Romans 1:32).</p> </blockquote> <p>Kincl defended his position and responded with a rejection of the Old Testament and a twisting of St. Paul’s condemnation of homosexuality in Romans, stating</p> <blockquote readability="7"> <p><strong>We do not follow the Hebrew Scriptures.</strong> We follow Jesus Christ <strong>who never mentioned gay relationships.</strong> When St. Paul mentioned such a relationship he was referring to the promiscuousness of the Romans using sodomy.</p> </blockquote> <p>Shoebat.com decided to investigate Kincl and found that he has a dark past. In 1993, Kincl worked as a Commander in charge of clergy at the U.S. Navy, and while he was in the service he defended another chaplain confirmed to be guilty of child molestation, named Robert Hrdlicka.</p> <p>The investigation revealed that Robert L. Kincl had even <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2003/jul/5/20030705-120850-9217r/#ixzz33jCPbVZz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">written the authorities</a>, not to charge the pedophile who molested the young boys, but urged them to send him back to serve as a chaplain:</p> <blockquote readability="15"> <p>Catholic chaplain Lt. Robert Hrdlicka pleaded guilty to molesting boys in 1993. Before his sentencing, six other Catholic Navy chaplains and the church’s archbishop for the military services urged authorities to send Lt. Hrdlicka to a church-run treatment center.</p> <p>“It is my fervent hope and prayer that he will be able to return to the active ministry as soon as possible,” wrote then-Cmdr. Robert L. Kincl.</p> <p>Instead, Lt. Hrdlicka went to prison.</p> </blockquote> <p>We reported Kincl to the ecclesiastical authorities in the Diocese of Austin. We spoke with Deacon Ron Walker and Vicar General Daniel Garcia, but they did nothing to have Robert L. And this isn’t the first time. In February 2021, China banned the import of <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-08-05/china-s-ban-on-taiwan-pineapples-backfires-as-new-buyers-step-in">Taiwanese pineapples</a>, causing a backlog and threatening farmers’ livelihoods across the country.</p> <p>The current situation is tied to a complex history that goes back to the Chinese civil war, as well as to recent tensions that go back to 2016 when Taiwan elected a new president. Since then, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/15/asia/taiwan-invasion-us-china-tensions-intl-dst-hnk/index.html">Chinese military incursions</a> into Taiwan’s airspace have been on the rise, and the relationship between the two has kept deteriorating. Sheriff’s Office Calls Out High School Hate Hoax

<p><strong>Racist graffiti directed toward black high schoolers was evidently scrawled by African American students, the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday.</strong></p> <p>Releasing details of their investigation into the vandalism, which crudely stated, “All N***** should die,” the sheriff’s office <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SacSheriff#" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> they worked closely with school administrators and reviewed surveillance footage to determine the culprits.</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote" readability="17"> <p>On Tuesday, 3/22/2022, at approximately 5:14 p.m. school officials at Rosemont High School, Sacramento City Unified School District in the County of Sacramento reported racist graffiti that had been written in pencil on the wall of a hallway inside a campus building. Two Rosemont High School students were observed writing a racial obscenity. The pencil graffiti resulted in minimal physical damage.</p> <p>The case was referred to detectives who worked closely with the school district and administrators. Rosemont High School Administrators were able to obtain video surveillance footage showing two African-American female juveniles clearly writing the graffiti on the wall. European Environmentalists Have Made Energy Independence Impossible

<p><strong>Europe is not going to achieve a competitive energy transition with the current interventionist policies.</strong></p> <p>Europe does not depend on Russian gas due to a coincidence, but because of a chain of mistaken policies: banning nuclear in Germany, prohibiting the development of domestic natural gas resources throughout the European Union, added to a massive and expensive renewable rollout without building a reliable backup.</p> <p>Solar and wind do not reduce dependency on Russian natural gas. They are necessary but volatile and intermittent. They need backup from nuclear, hydro, and natural gas for security of energy supply. Dependency on these backup sources rises in periods of low wind and little sun, just when prices are highest.</p> <p>“Solar goes to zero for twelve hours a day, and that is guaranteed. The wind blows sometimes, and sometimes it does not, also guaranteed. They both depend on weather, which is 100% out of human control. They are on their best day a supplement,” wrote a Navy pilot follower.</p> <p>Batteries are not an option, either. It is impossible to build an industrial-size network of enormous batteries; the cost would be prohibitive and the dependency on China (for lithium, etc.) to build them would be even more of a problem. At current prices, a battery energy-storage system of Europe’s size would cost more than $2.5 trillion, according to an <em>MIT Technology Review</em> paper, massively more expensive than any other alternative.</p> <p>The added cost of a battery grid plus the distribution and transmission network would make household bills soar even further.</p> <p>Inflation was already out of control in Europe before the invasion of Ukraine was even a risk. Consumer price inflation in Spain was 7.6 percent, in Portugal it was 4.2 percent, and in Germany, 5.1 percent. Euro area consumer price inflation was 5.8 percent.</p> <p>In the face of the impact on prices and energy from the invasion of Ukraine, we must remember:</p> <div class="ACXCiBRn"><a href="https://www.patriotcollectibles.com/" target="_blank"><img src="https://api.directus.libertycdn.com/uploads/_/originals/385x453.jpg" /></a></div> <p>Europe was already in an energy crisis in 2020 and 2021, with the cost of CO₂ permits soaring and wholesale electricity prices reaching record-high levels by December 2021.</p> <p>Europe does not “depend on Russian gas.” It is codependency. Russia needs Europe to export, and Europe has no cheaper alternative. Let us remember that Russian gas is much cheaper than any other realistic alternative.</p> <p>The long-term contracts signed with Gazprom are closed at prices that can be up to ten times lower than some of the current alternatives. The 150 billion cubic meters that Europe imports from Russia can be replaced with liquefied natural gas from Norway and the North Sea, the United States, Algeria, Qatar, or Israel, but it will be much more expensive.</p> <p>The only alternative to Russia is to show that European countries have diverse and cheap sources of supply. If Russia sees that European governments ban nuclear power, prohibit the development of indigenous gas reserves, intervene in imports, and add massive CO₂ taxes, Russian authorities will know that there is no competitive alternative, and that European industry and consumers will collapse due to the rising cost of energy</p> <p>European governments should think hard about misguided policies when the continent has been saved this winter by natural gas imported from the United States produced with fracking, a technology that has been banned in Europe.</p> <p>Europe wants cheap and abundant energy, but politicians demonize nuclear, gas, and oil. All the interventionist proposals that are put forward by European politicians entail a higher cost for long-suffering consumers.</p> <p>Natural gas flows all the time and is cheap and abundant. It cannot be substituted with renewables that are intermittent, volatile, and unpredictable. The example of Germany is clear. After investing massively in renewables and doubling bills for consumers, it depends more on lignite coal and Russian gas to guarantee supply. Germany has had to reactivate coal plants after spending more than $200 billion in subsidies and renewables!</p> <p>All technologies are necessary, and renewables are key, but they are not the alternative because they need natural gas backup while the technology is developed, as it is still in its infancy. Let’s not forget that installing renewables involves a huge cost in networks. Who will lower bills if the fixed cost of networks is increased by the $150 billion we estimate are needed to strengthen distribution and transmission networks?</p> <p>All the “magical” alternatives that interventionism sells mean going from depending on Russia to depending on China. Where are we going to get the silicon, aluminum, rare-earths, copper, lithium, etc. necessary for those massive magical investments announced?</p> <p>Demonizing nuclear energy has left Europe in the hands of expensive and volatile alternatives. The energy transition must be considered with an understanding of the importance of security of supply and competitiveness. We need all technologies, without ideological bias. We need solar, wind, natural gas, hydro, oil, and nuclear, or we will go from crisis to crisis, and always paying more.</p> <p>It is absurd to maintain the hidden tax scheme of CO₂ emissions during an unprecedented crisis. Governments must use this income to reduce citizens’ bills.</p> <p>Border taxes on oil products and natural gas are not taxing producers; they are taxing consumers in European countries. Whoever believes that the taxes that have been announced will be paid by Qatar, Nigeria, or Brazil has a serious problem of economic understanding.</p> <p>A true energy transition must be competitive, reliable, and cheap, not a tax-collection and looting machine. It must consider all technologies. More industry and less politics. Commodities Do Not Cause Inflation. Money Printing Does.

<p><strong>In this world of monetary insanity, defenders of central bank constant easing try every day to convince you that inflation is caused by numerous factors, not by currency printing.</strong></p> <p>Many blame inflation on cost-push factors or even speculation, but ultimately all those are consequences, not causes. Rising prices are always caused by more units of currency being directed to scarce or tangible assets.</p> <p>Commodities exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are a clear example. In 2022, investors have been purchasing these products to protect themselves from inflation and generate real returns. These purchases are not a cause; they are a consequence. With increased inflationary concerns, the likelihood of rising interest rates, and elevated geopolitical concerns, commodity-focused funds have seen record inflows in 2022. Year to date through February 25, commodities ETFs gathered $8.5 billion of net ETF inflows, according to Wealthmanagement.com. This is not the full picture, though. According to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the total value of various commodity index-related instruments purchased by institutional investors has increased from an estimated $15 billion in 2003 to an estimated $200 billion. The global commodity-services market size is estimated at $4 trillion in 2020, according to Market Research.</p> <p>In 2020, most investors were very underweight in energy and commodities. The surge in socially responsible investment as well as the recent history of underperformance of commodities relative to bonds and equities had created an enormous underweight. As concerns about inflation and geopolitical events unraveled, funds reallocated capital from underweight to equal weight and now, in 2022, to overweight.</p> <p>This happened at the same time as central banks injected unprecedented quantities of money into the economy. Between 2020 and 2021, the assets of the major central banks rose by more than $10 trillion. Furthermore, broad money supply (M3) growth rose at a double-digit rate in 2020 and 2021 in the major economies.</p> <p>Obviously one or two prices may rise independently due to particular events. A war can cause that, but not a generalized and widespread increase in all prices. Furthermore, commodity and food prices were already rising to multiyear highs even before the Ukraine invasion was a rumor.</p> <p>Readers may believe that all this is due to trader speculation, but trader actions work both ways. Traders do not create prices; they trade on them. Furthermore, traders cannot influence the marginal price of a commodity for long if the fundamentals, inflation, and money reality are not there. There are numerous reports from the CFTC proving that investing does not impact commodity prices. Between 2013 and 2019, commodity prices were not rising. Why? Because broad money growth was not rising above real demand for money.</p> <p>Oil and gas have risen equally everywhere, yet Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is vastly different in the euro area and the United States compared to countries where energy imports are much higher, like Japan and Korea. Why is CPI inflation twice as high in the euro area and the US relative to those Asian countries? Much higher broad money growth in 2020–21.</p> <div class="j26aa8PH"><a href="https://www.patriotcollectibles.com/" target="_blank"><img src="https://api.directus.libertycdn.com/uploads/_/originals/385x453.jpg" /></a></div> <p>The Ukraine war has created another excuse to blame inflation on oil and natural gas. However, it seems that all those who blame inflationary pressures on commodities continue to ignore the massive price increases in housing, healthcare, and education, as well as in goods and services where there was evident overcapacity. Global food prices show a similar problem. The United Nations and Food and Agriculture Organization Food Price Index has been rising steadily and reached all-time highs even before the covid crisis.</p> <p>Oil and gas will be used as an excuse for inflation as long as low interest rates and massive currency creation remain. But the reality is that when both deflate somehow, the problem of currency debasement will remain.</p> <p>Inflation was already higher than the CPI measure suggested before the covid-19 crisis. The rise in the prices of nonreplicable goods and services, shelter, healthcare, fresh food, and education was significantly higher than the CPI percentage. According to Deutsche Bank, these were rising up to five times faster than the CPI. There was high inflation in the things that we consume every day even in the days when some said there was “no inflation.”</p> <p>Now the increase in broad money has translated to an explosion in all prices, energy-related or not. Some will blame wages, others will blame the Ukraine war, and others will blame the weak recovery. The fact is that currency destruction is at the heart of generalized price rises everywhere. Everything else is anecdotes or consequences, not causes.</p> <p>More units of currency are going to scarce assets as investors look for protection against inflation. Central Banks: Who Needs Them? No One

<p><strong>As the Federal Reserve<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/16/federal-reserve-meeting.html#:~:text=The%20Fed%20approved%20a%200.25%20percentage%20point%20rate,year%20and%20sharply%20raised%20their%20outlook%20for%20inflation." target="_blank"> hikes</a> its lending rate to a range of 0.25–0.50 percent, murmurs are heard around the world, with financial pundits predicting doom due to the increased pressures imposed on the cost structures of firms that are recovering from the pandemic lockdowns.</strong></p> <p>The Federal Reserve is leader of the group of central banks around the world that are ostensibly directed by their respective countries to pursue stability and smooth functioning of their economies.</p> <p>The alleged legitimacy of central banks rests on three fundamental goals that central banks around the world share. The first goal is price stability, which is the belief that central banks should expand and contract the money supply in relation to actual demand and supply pressures from the economy. Goal number two is fueling macroeconomic growth prospects, which is done through lowering the cost of borrowing, which supposedly leads businesses to increase their investments, leading to increases in output and overall growth.</p> <p>Finally, the last goal is performing countercyclical measures, which are actions that the central bank undertakes in order to offset the high unemployment rates that may result from falling output during a <a href="https://www.thebalance.com/what-is-the-trough-in-the-business-cycle-5214485#:~:text=%20Key%20Takeaways%20%201%20A%20trough%20in,and%20lower-priced%20items%20will%20generally%20outperform.%20More%20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trough</a> in the business cycle.</p> <h4>Price Stability</h4> <p>The role of the central bank in maintaining price stability in effect lies in controlling the value of money; i.e., not allowing a general inflation or a general deflation to take place. An index is created comprising a basket of goods that are weighted in terms of expenditures on them, and then their price movements are tracked as a proxy for changes in the general price level in the economy.</p> <p>The increase or decrease in value of the index are judged alongside a constant percentage growth rule. When the value of the index increases or decreases more than the designated rate of constant growth, usually 2 percent, the central bank steps in with its monetary policy instruments to influence the value of money in the markets.</p> <p>While the idea of preserving the value of money may be well intentioned, it suffers from a misunderstanding of the role rising and falling prices play in the market economy. Prices act as coordinating signals that convey information about important economic data scattered around in a decentralized manner. The rise in prices in a well-functioning market has a specific role: when an object becomes scarce in the market, rising prices are a signal to consumers to economize on it while at the same time pointing out a more profitable employment of resources to suppliers, who increase supply of the object until supernormal profits are all exploited, bringing down its price in the process.</p> <p>Therefore, when the prices of goods in the basket of goods rise, the value of the index increases, providing the central bank with reasons to interfere in the market in order to offset the increases in price, but by doing so, central banks interfere in the market process. This prevents entrepreneurs from capitalizing on high-profit opportunities; if the rise in prices is caused by demand-pull inflation, the intervention also stops consumers from getting goods which would make them better off.</p> <div class="927oc8rQ"><a href="https://www.patriotcollectibles.com/" target="_blank"><img src="https://api.directus.libertycdn.com/uploads/_/originals/385x453.jpg" /></a></div> <h4>Macroeconomic Growth and Countercyclical Goals</h4> <p>Modern central banking traces ups and downs through the deviations of the actual growth rate of the economy from its long-run trend rate of growth. In other words, a growth-cycle upturn (downturn) is marked by growth higher (lower) than the long-run trend rate. The health of an economy is understood in terms of the closeness between its current growth rate and its projected growth rate based on long-term trends. Central banks also use other lagging and leading indicators such as consumer confidence surveys, weekly work time surveys, and the industrial production indices to gauge the current health of the economy.</p> <p>When the current growth level or the value of the indicators suggest that the economy needs to be stimulated, various monetary policy instruments are used to influence the demand and supply of money in the economy to accomplish the goal of bringing the economy back on track. In trying to lower the cost of borrowing for firms, the central banks also lower the cost of lending for commercial banks, which would then lower commercial banks’ own interest rates. The decrease in interest rates is supposed to lower the cost of borrowing for firms such that the return on an investment becomes marginally greater than its cost and thereby increase investment and output through the multiplier process.</p> <p>But while at first glance such measures against falling output and spending may seem sound, they warrant a deeper look, as the actions of central bankers impact the economy disproportionately. The total spending in the economy consists of two parts, one being spending to support the structure of production and the other being spending on the final products. The spending on the structure of production consists of spending on capital investments to increase the productivity as well as scale of firms, and on circulating capital, which is used as input to produce outputs, while the spending on final products implies consumer spending on finished goods and services.</p> <p>Firms often save a part of their profits and use this pool to finance their capital investments in the future. When firms resort to saving instead of spending, there might be falling output, but such a fall in output and spending is not a sign of bad health of the economy but merely a process that the economy needs to undergo that results in increased productivity, innovation, and efficiency in production due to lowered costs.</p> <p>This efficiency results from changes in capital structures of firms as they change their machines or increase their scale. Both scenes are connected and sequential.</p> <p>Morbius’s first credits scene features the purple time rift seen in <a href="https://www.vox.com/22841923/spider-man-no-way-home-ending-aunt-may-avengers-explained"><em>Spider-Man: No Way Home</em></a>. In that movie, Doctor Strange has to put the world back together to stop the multiverse from collapsing on itself. The violet cracks in the sky symbolize the multiverse breaking, and with this credits scene, the implication is that Morbius (Jared Leto) and his world (which includes Venom and Carnage) are one of the parallel dimensions that is threatening to bleed into Strange’s and the larger Marvel cinematic universe (MCU).</p> <p>Instead of Morbius or any of his ilk being transported into that timeline, a visitor from Strange’s comes through to Morbius’s. It’s Adrian Toomes (played by Michael Keaton) a.k.a. the Vulture, the villain from <em>Spider-Man: Homecoming</em>. He appears in a jail cell, transported from his own dimension where he’s serving a sentence for, among several crimes, hijacking Tony Stark’s plane. But since Toomes hasn’t been convicted of any crimes in Morbius’s world, we see him exonerated and freed.</p> <p>The second scene picks up where the first one leaves off, and features Morbius meeting up with a free Toomes. The Vulture wants to recruit our living vampire into some kind of supervillain posse. Morbius doesn’t answer either way before the scene cuts to black. I’m not fully convinced Morbius will join him since his own movie positions him to be more anti-hero than supervillain.</p> <p>Morbius’s credits scenes, especially considered alongside the ones attached to the ends of <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/12/16/22837975/spider-man-no-way-home-post-credits-scenes-venom-doctor-strange-spoiler"><em>Spider-Man: No Way Home</em></a> and <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/22698513/venom-2-let-there-be-carnage-post-credits-scene-tom-holland-spider-man"><em>Venom: Let There Be Carnage</em></a>, tease out the possibility of these heroes and villains all eventually colliding with one another, with the ultimate fandom scenario being any of these characters linking up with Spider-Man (Tom Holland). And for a brief moment at the end of <em>No Way Home</em> it looked as though Tom Hardy’s Venom would finally come face to face with Holland’s Spidey, before the film walked it back, blinking Venom out of the MCU as easily as a snap.</p> <p>All this universe-colliding stuff is a big deal because it’s how Marvel and Sony have addressed the film rights of various characters. Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man and the characters in the Spider-Verse, but has, since <em>Spider-Man: Homecoming</em>, worked in collaboration with Marvel to let Holland’s Peter Parker join the MCU. Meanwhile, Sony has independently worked on movies like <em>Venom</em>, <em>Venom</em>’s sequel, and now <em>Morbius</em>. And fans are waiting to see if and when those Sony characters get to tangle with Spider-Man and possibly other Marvel characters.</p> <p>That previous tease and letdown is perhaps why I’m just a little skeptical about Toomes’s sticking around with Morbius. Getting hopes up about Keaton’s Vulture and Leto’s Morbius teaming up or clashing with one another might be a little premature since it could all be undone with another credits scene. Yet with this bombshell cameo (which was teased in one of its <a href="https://ew.com/movies/michael-keaton-morbius-trailer-spider-verse-video/">trailers</a>), it can’t help but feel a little like the credits scene and potential sequel are more important than anything that just happened in <em>Morbius</em>.</p> <p>We could get our answer about Morbius, Vulture, and their future together soon enough. <p><strong>A Russian-Australian man was told to leave a television studio after he asked a ‘rogue’ question and pointed out that there is an alternative narrative to be considered surrounding the conflict in Ukraine.</strong></p> <p>The audience member Sasha Gillies-Lekakis was speaking on a live Australian debate show when he expressed support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, angering other audience members and surprising the host of the show, Stan Grant.</p> <p>“As someone who comes from the Russian community here in Australia, I’ve been pretty outraged by the narrative depicted by our media, with Ukraine as the good guy and Russia as the bad guy,” Gillies-Lekakis said.</p> <p>“Believe it or not, there are a lot of Russians here and around the world that support what Putin’s doing in Ukraine, myself included,” he added before claiming that Ukraine has previously “besieged” the Russian populations in Donetsk and Luhansk, killing thousands of people.</p> <p>Other audience members heckled him and yelled ‘propaganda’ and ‘lies’, while the host Grant moved the program on.</p> <p>Around twenty minutes later Grant returned to Gillies-Lekakis and said he had ‘thought about it’ and wasn’t comfortable allowing him to stay in the studio.</p> <p>“Something has been bothering me,” Grant said, adding “people here have been talking about family who are suffering and people who are dying. Can I just say – I’m just not comfortable with you being here. Could you please leave?”</p> <p>“You can ask a question, but we cannot advocate violence. I should have asked you to leave then. It’s not good.”</p> <p>In a now removed Facebook post, Gillies-Lekakis explained that he “supports Putin’s grievances regarding the breaking of the Minsk Peace Agreement by Ukraine and the ensuing loss of life, particularly in the Russian-populated areas of the Donbas”.</p> <p>He added, “My question, furthermore, sought to question why these Russian deaths were seemingly less important compared to Ukrainian casualties in our media coverage, and whether the panellists thought there was any hypocrisy in their positions as a result.”</p> <p>“This is reflected in my question as published on the Q+A website. Unfortunately, I was unable to fully finish asking my question nor clarify myself despite trying, and so believe that my words were misrepresented and incomplete,” he further wrote.</p> <p>Gillies-Lekakis further noted that his question was not ‘rogue’ and was submitted to the show’s producers beforehand, adding that he wasn’t able to ask it in full before being interrupted.</p> <p>“The only addition I made to my question when actually delivering it was my reference to the Azhov Battalion (7-8 words roughly), and some sentences were left out towards the end as I was interrupted,” he said.</p> <p>He added, “If this small change to my question amounts to it being ‘rogue’, as was claimed, once again I apologise. Maxine Waters Told a Confused Group of Homeless People to ‘Go Home’

<h4>U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) told a large crowd of homeless Americans to “go home” after they became irritated. The crowd was upset after a misunderstanding over Section 8 housing vouchers. Waters later threatened a local journalist and told them not to report on the story.</h4> <p>The incident took place on March 25, not far from a homeless encampment in Los Angeles. According to a <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/03/30/rep-maxine-waters-warns-reporter-over-la-homeless-story/">report</a> from investigative reporter Connor Sheets of the LA Times, hundreds of homeless people showed up after being led to believe they would receive Section 8 housing vouchers at the event.</p> <p>The event, which was organized by Fathers and Mothers Who Care, was aimed at finding emergency shelter for citizens without homes. The confusion reportedly overwhelmed the non-profit as well as Los Angeles Housing Services Authority (LAHSA) workers who told the unexpected arrivals that they would only be able to provide their information and enter an emergency housing database.</p> <p>Waters was then surrounded by a large group of agitated and confused group of homeless people. She eventually told the crowd to “go home”, prompting an angry response. “We ain’t got no home, that’s why we’re here” a woman in the crowd could be heard saying in response. Bewildered, Maxine Waters then told the homeless crowd that nobody in Washington was fighting for them harder than she is and that she “didn’t want to hear” any negative remarks.</p> <p>“Excuse me, there’s nobody in Washington who works for their people any fu***** harder than I do,” Waters said. “I don’t want to hear this.
