Bill Gates: “We’ll Have Another Pandemic. It Will be a Different Pathogen Next Time”

Speaking at Germany’s annual Munich Security Conference on Friday, globalist billionaire Bill Gates confidently warned the world a new pandemic is coming.
CNBC’s Hadley Gamble asked Gates, “How confident are you that we, as a global community, will deal with the next global pandemic better?”
“Well, there were a lot of people after the Ebola epidemic who were talking about what needed to be done, and in this pandemic, the countries that had exposure to SARS-CoV-1 were amongst the outliers,” Gates answered.
Next, Gates praised Australia’s authoritarian crackdown on its civilians as an example for other nations to follow.
“So, Australia is a true outlier,” he said. “They orchestrated diagnostics, they executed quarantine policies and they have a death rate in a different league than the other rich countries.”
“We’ll have another pandemic. It will be a different pathogen next time,” Gates <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/18/bill-gates-covid-risks-have-reduced-but-another-pandemic-will-come.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">told the CNBC anchor</a>.
Regarding Australia’s drastic and inhumane Covid measures, Gates noted, “Everybody had the capability to do that. They have less PCR machines than other rich countries, they have more travelers coming from China than other countries.”
The Microsoft co-founder cited the millions of deaths, the economic toll, lack of schooling, depression, overdose deaths and other negative effects of lockdowns as results of Covid, not government policies.

Gates claimed, “The cost of being ready for the next pandemic is not super large,” adding, “It’s not like climate change where you know 10 trillion, 20 trillion, these are big numbers.”
According to Gates, “Global surveillance capability would cost a billion a year. The RND that we need to do to get magic vaccines and diagnostics and therapeutics, you know that’s less than 100 billion over the next decade. So, if we’re rational then yeah, we’ll catch it early and it won’t go global like it did this time.”
During another segment of the Munich Security Conference, Gates argued that wealthier nations shouldn’t have been pushing the experimental Covid jabs on children who are in less danger from the virus before they got the shots into the elderly populations of poorer countries.
“It’s hard to get the vaccines allocated according to that risk ordering, which would have been ideal,” he said. “Because of the Second Source deal that we helped fund with Serum and AstraZeneca, India actually had a lot of vaccines very early. And, you know, the rich countries had vaccines early.”
Gates’ solution to the dilemma of prioritizing vaccinations is to have the capability to produce 2 doses of a vaccine for every person on the planet.
Asked whether or not it’s possible to prevent the next pandemic, Gates again focused on Australia, saying if every nation did what they did then we wouldn’t be calling it a pandemic.
Basically, unless every nation on the planet becomes a totalitarian hellhole like Australia, we will surely have another global pandemic on our hands despite the fact that Covid was the first one since the 1918 Spanish Flu.
In a bizarre comment, Gates said it was “sad” that the Omicron variant was able to act as a natural vaccine by getting out to the world’s population faster than the experimental vaccines.
“Sadly the virus itself particularly the variant called Omicron is a type of vaccine, creates both B cell and T cell immunity and it’s done better job of getting out to the world population than we have with vaccines…” he explained.

When a panel member asked Gates about face masks, he sarcastically mocked those who don’t want to wear one, saying, “It’s got to be tough, you know, you have to wear pants… These societies are so cruel. Why do you have to wear pants, I’m trying to figure it out.”

Levi’s former Brand President Jennifer Sey claims she was offered $1 million dollars by the company to stay silent about why she was fired – for her criticism of COVID restrictions and particularly the closure of schools.
Sey made the assertion in an article posted to the <a href="https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/yesterday-i-was-levis-brand-president?r=rael8">Common Sense channel</a> on Substack run by Bari Weiss.
The gymnast had worked with Levi’s for two decades having previously competed at the 1986 Goodwill Games in Russia.
However, she was fired after being targeted by a mob campaign because she dared to suggest that making children wear masks and forcing them to miss school might be harmful.
“Anonymous trolls on Twitter, some with nearly half a million followers, said people should boycott Levi’s until I’d been fired,” Sey wrote. “So did some of my old gymnastics fans. They called the company ethics hotline and sent emails.”
As we previously <a href="https://summit.news/2022/01/27/speech-therapist-364-surge-in-baby-and-toddler-referrals-thanks-to-mask-wearing/">highlighted</a>, Sey is completely correct in her criticism given that speech therapists are now reporting a 364% increase in patient referrals of babies and toddlers over developmental disorders caused by mask wearing.
After CEO Charles Bergh told Sey that if she stopped speaking out, she’d eventually become the company’s next CEO, Sey briefly muted her dissent.
However, thanks to the mob pressure, Sey was told her position was “untenable” and was then offered $1 million dollars to not reveal why she was fired.
“The money would be very nice. But I just can’t do it. Sorry, Levi’s,” wrote Sey.
“I never set out to be a contrarian. I don’t like to fight. I love Levi’s and its place in the American heritage as a purveyor of sturdy pants for hardworking, daring people who moved West and dreamed of gold buried in the dirt.”
“But the corporation doesn’t believe in that now.”
“It’s trapped trying to please the mob—and silencing any dissent within the organization. In this it is like so many other American companies: held hostage by intolerant ideologues who do not believe in genuine inclusion or diversity.”
Revealing that she was also labeled “racist” for speaking out against COVID restrictions, Sey wrote that she decided to keep her voice rather than take the money.
“Early on in the pandemic, I publicly questioned whether schools had to be shut down.”
“This didn’t seem at all controversial to me. I felt—and still do—that the draconian policies would cause the most harm to those least at risk, and the burden would fall heaviest on disadvantaged kids in public schools, who need the safety and routine of school the most.”
“In the summer of 2020, I finally got the call.”
“‘You know when you speak, you speak on behalf of the company,’ our head of corporate communications told me, urging me to pipe down.”
Despite pleading that she was merely speaking in a personal capacity as “a public school mom of four kids,” Sey said the final straw was when she appeared on Fox News with Laura Ingraham and criticized further school closures.
Levi Strauss & Co. subsequently released a false statement claiming Sey had “resigned from the company.”
In reality, she was fired after intense pressure and relentless phone calls from people at every level of the company, right up to the CEO.

IN THE PUP COMMUNITY, handlers function the same way dog owners do, keeping a watchful eye on their charge and reining in the pups if needed. It’s the handlers who train the pups and teach them discipline, doling out rewards or punishments based on good or bad behavior.
“Think of any bio-dog,” [Pup] Gryphn says. “You can train them. It’s this ‘go do this’ reward system, just like a bio-dog. So let’s say you’re playing fetch, you throw the ball, the pup picks it up, brings it back, and drops it at your feet. You’re going to reward him, whether it’s petting him or anything like that.
“Or, let’s go to an extreme,” he continues. “Let’s say you’re doing pup play around the house and the pup decides to pee on the floor. Obviously the pup is going to be punished for that. Typically, when we’re being humans, it’s ‘Why would you correct me in front of so-and-so? That’s wrong, don’t do that. Don’t speak for the next five minutes,’ something like that.”
Just like the pups they are tasked with watching over, some handlers need to enter their own headspace when engaging in puppy play.
“My headspace is equivalent to the mom who sees her kid in danger, or the dad who wants to teach his son how to play football,” says Nubi’s 27-year-old handler, Sam [Brinton]. “It’s the concept of the teacher and nurturer…. My job is to make sure that while he’s in headspace, I’m keeping him safe.”

Brinton also explains how he has difficulty making his ‘dog’ stop pretending to be a dog before he has anal sex with it.
“I actually have trouble when we transition from pup play to having sex. Like, ‘No, I can’t have you whimper like that when we’re having sex,’ because I don’t want to mix that world. It’s interesting, because he doesn’t have to come out of pup mode to have me f*ck him. I personally have to bring him out of pup perception for me. But then I’m still treating him as a submissive to me.”
The LGBT activist also explains how he believes he is having “sex with animals” and that there’s nothing wrong with that.
“One of the hardest things about being a handler is that I’ve honestly had people ask, ‘Wait, you have sex with animals?’” They believe it’s abusive, that it’s taking advantage of someone who may not be acting up to a level of human responsibility…. The other misperception is that I have some really messed up background, like, did I have some horrible childhood trauma that made me like to have sex with animals.”
During a video presentation for far-left outlet Now This, Brinton lectured the viewer about the necessity of using proper pronouns so as to cater to people with mental disorders.

A Trump judge’s new decision would undo more than 50 years of voting rights law

A Trump-appointed judge handed down a decision on Thursday that, if embraced by the Supreme Court, would render crucial safeguards against racial discrimination in elections virtually unenforceable — particularly during Republican administrations.
To be clear, this is a decision by a federal trial judge, which means that it must survive contact with an appeals court and the Supreme Court before its narrow approach to voting rights becomes the law of the land. Nevertheless, the Supreme Court’s 6-3 Republican majority is typically <a href="https://www.vox.com/22575435/voting-rights-supreme-court-john-roberts-shelby-county-constitution-brnovich-elena-kagan">hostile to voting rights suits</a>, so there is a very real risk that they will agree with this trial judge.
The case is <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ared.131201/gov.uscourts.ared.131201.100.0.pdf">Arkansas State Conference NAACP v. Arkansas Board of Apportionment</a>, and the plaintiffs claim that Arkansas’s statehouse maps are racially gerrymandered in violation of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/3/6/8163229/voting-rights-act-1965">landmark civil rights law</a> that probably did more than any other statute to end Jim Crow. Among other things, the plaintiffs note that the maps contain only 11 (out of 100) majority-Black districts, even though Black voters make up more than 16 percent of the state’s population.
But Lee Rudofsky, the Trump judge assigned this case, barely engages with the substance of this racial gerrymandering claim. Instead, Rudofsky concludes that such a claim “may be brought only by the Attorney General of the United States” and not by private plaintiffs.
Private suits enforcing the VRA have been a fixture of American civil rights law since the 1960s. As the Supreme Court explained in <a href="https://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-supreme-court/393/544.html">Allen v. State Board of Elections</a> (1969), “the achievement of the Act’s laudable goal could be severely hampered ... if each citizen were required to depend solely on litigation instituted at the discretion of the Attorney General.” Among other things, “the Attorney General has a limited staff and often might be unable to uncover quickly” new state policies that target voters of color.
And a law that only the attorney general can enforce will be utterly useless if the attorney general does not choose to enforce it. During the entire Trump administration, for example, the Justice Department’s voting section <a href="https://www.justice.gov/crt/voting-section-litigation">brought only one lawsuit</a> alleging discrimination under the Voting Rights Act — and that was a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/crt/case-document/file/1286481/download">fairly minor suit</a> alleging that the method of electing school board members in a South Dakota school district “dilutes the voting strength of American Indian citizens.”
Nevertheless, Rudofsky now seeks to neutralize one of the most important protections against racism in American elections.
The most straightforward reason why Rudofsky is wrong is that the Supreme Court determined that he is wrong in <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=3481160507352623076&hl=en&as_sdt=6&as_vis=1&oi=scholarr">Morse v. Republican Party of Virginia</a> (1996). In that case, a majority of the Court concluded that Section 2 of the VRA, the provision at issue in Arkansas State Conference, is enforceable through private lawsuits.
Additionally, while the Voting Rights Act does not contain any language which explicitly states that “private plaintiffs may sue under this law,” it does contain some provisions which make no sense unless private suits are permitted. One provision, for example, states that federal courts hearing VRA lawsuits shall exercise their jurisdiction “<a href="https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=(title:52%20section:10308%20edition:prelim)">without regard to whether a person asserting rights</a>” under the VRA has exhausted other potential legal remedies.
It makes no sense for the VRA to contain a provision referring to “a person asserting rights” in a Voting Rights Act lawsuit unless the law permits such a person to assert those rights in the first place.
Rudofsky’s primary argument is that Allen and Morse do not apply because the Supreme Court has since abandoned their approach to interpreting federal laws, and that the VRA must be retroactively reinterpreted in line with this new approach.
The Voting Rights Act became law in 1965. One year earlier, in <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=11274363713776494210&hl=en&as_sdt=6,47&as_vis=1">J.I. Case v. Borak</a> (1964), the Supreme Court established that federal statutes should generally be read broadly to permit enforcement by private lawsuits. “It is the duty of the courts to be alert to provide such remedies as are necessary to make effective the congressional purpose,” Borak explained.
Thus, the Congress that wrote the Voting Rights Act operated under the assumption that it did not need to explicitly write a private right to sue into the statute because the Supreme Court had recently signaled that private suits are permitted when a federal law would be ineffective without them. The Court validated this reading of the VRA four years later in Allen.
Then, nearly four decades after Congress wrote the VRA — and 19 years after Congress <a href="https://www.vox.com/21211880/supreme-court-chief-justice-john-roberts-voting-rights-act-election-2020">enacted important amendments to the law in 1982</a> — the Court decided <a href="https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=6907411608837736130&hl=en&as_sdt=6&as_vis=1&oi=scholarr">Alexander v. Sandoval</a> (2001), which laid out a much stingier approach to private lawsuits. Sandoval does contain some language that undermines the case for permitting private suits under the Voting Rights Act.
Sandoval, for example, states that “statutes that focus on the person regulated rather than the individuals protected create ‘no implication of an intent to confer rights on a particular class of persons’” — so if a federal law uses language like “no state shall do X” instead of “all persons have a right to X,” courts typically should not permit private lawsuits under that statute.
The relevant provision of the Voting Rights Act uses both kinds of language — it starts with the phrase “no voting qualification or prerequisite to voting or standard, practice, or procedure shall be imposed or applied by any State,” but then goes on to forbid any voting practice “which results in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen of the United States to vote.”
But there are good reasons not to read Sandoval too restrictively with respect to the VRA. One is that, while Sandoval does lay out some interpretive guidelines that courts can use to determine whether a particular law permits private lawsuits, Sandoval also states that “the judicial task is to interpret the statute Congress has passed to determine whether it displays an intent to create not just a private right but also a private remedy,” and that “statutory intent on this latter point is determinative.”
And, in this case, there is overwhelming evidence that Congress intended the Voting Rights Act to contain a private right that is enforced by private lawsuits. Again, Congress wrote the law against the backdrop of decisions like Borak, which emphasized that private parties should generally be allowed to sue to enforce their legal rights. Federal courts have understood the law to permit private suits at least as far back as 1969, when the Court decided Allen. And Congress has <a href="https://www.vox.com/21211880/supreme-court-chief-justice-john-roberts-voting-rights-act-election-2020">amended the VRA multiple times</a>, but it’s never questioned the longstanding assumption that the law permits private lawsuits.
Justice John Paul Stevens, moreover, anticipated Rudofsky’s objection to an enforceable Voting Rights Act in an opinion he wrote in the Morse case. Recognizing that the law governing when private parties are allowed to sue under federal statutes was in flux in 1996, when Morse was decided, Stevens acknowledged that a decision proving that only the attorney general may enforce the law “might have been correct if the Voting Rights Act had been enacted recently.” But such a decision would fail “to give effect to our cases holding that our evaluation of congressional action ‘must take into account its contemporary legal context.’”
Stevens, in other words, relied on a fairly basic rule of fundamental fairness. Courts should not interpret a statute written in 1965 using interpretive rules that the Court came up with years later. If Congress had known about Sandoval when it wrote the Voting Rights Act, it would have known to use more explicit language. But Congress did not have a time machine.
In any event, Rudofsky is not alone in his desire to burn down a landmark civil rights statute because lawmakers in 1965 failed to predict the future. Concurring in Brnovich v. DNC (2021), Justice Neil Gorsuch claimed that “our cases have assumed — without deciding — that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 furnishes an implied cause of action under §2,” and suggested that he would eliminate this right of private parties to sue under the law.
Gorsuch’s opinion was joined by only one other justice, Justice Clarence Thomas. So it is not the law. But given this Supreme Court’s <a href="https://www.vox.com/22575435/voting-rights-supreme-court-john-roberts-shelby-county-constitution-brnovich-elena-kagan">record of hostility toward the Voting Rights Act</a>, there is no guarantee that Gorsuch won’t find five votes to affirm Rudofsky’s decision.

One in Five Gen Z Adults Now Say They Are LGBTQ

One in five Gen Z adults now identify as LGBTQ, while the number of total Americans doing the same has doubled in a decade, according to a new Gallup poll.
However, the rise is almost entirely accounted for by far greater numbers of people identifying as bisexual or transgender, not gay or lesbian.
“Gallup estimates from these results that within the entire U.S. adult population, 4.0 percent of Americans identify as bisexual, 1.5 percent as gay, 1 percent as lesbian and 0.7 percent as transgender,” reports the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10525275/Record-number-adults-say-identify-LGBTQ.html">Daily Mail</a>.
“The Gallup poll found nearly 21 percent of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ, which is nearly double the number of millennials who do, which is 10.5 percent. Nearly one in six Gen Z LGBTQ adults identify as bisexual.”
Americans identifying as LGBTQ represent 7.1 per cent of the population, compared to 5.6 per cent a year ago. In 2012, 3.5 per cent of Americans identified as LGBTQ.
The numbers are fascinating given that a significantly greater percentage of Americans obviously aren’t being ‘born gay’.
Indeed, the increase is largely explained by far more people identifying not as gay or lesbian, who still comprise a total of just 2.5 per cent, but by those identifying as bisexual or trans, a total of 4.7 per cent.
This exemplifies how the huge rise in people identifying as LGBTQ (or more specifically bisexual and trans) is overwhelmingly caused by social engineering.
When Glenn Greenwald (who is gay) made this same point last year, he was smeared as “transphobic.”
Greenwald pointed out on Twitter that “almost all of the increase comes from those identifying as bi or trans, not gay or lesbian.”

He went on to highlight how, “Of Americans now claiming “bi” identity, the vast majority of them in long-term relationships are in opposite-sex relationships (33%) rather than same-sex ones (3.7%). So 10 times more people who identify as “bi” live in hetero-appearing relationships than gay/lesbian ones.”
The writer said one explanation for this was that “masculine girls are now encouraged to identify as trans, causing a decrease in the lesbian population.”
He then cited an article which explored “whether the disappearance of lesbian culture is due to the encouragement which masculine girls receive — from the society, therapists, health care workers, etc. — to identify as trans, not as lesbian women.”

The results of the poll underscore how mainstream culture’s increasing obsession with identity politics is manipulating young people into identifying as LGBTQ because they think it’s cool, edgy or makes them unique.
However, given that such brainwashing is being imposed via top down social engineering, it’s not edgy or unique at all.
Nor is it very healthy given the greater risk of mental illness and depression associated with such lifestyles.

Despite the legacy media breathlessly reporting that Russia had chosen today – February 16 – as the date to attack Ukraine, one of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s closest allies now says the chances of that happening are virtually zero.
On Friday, it was reported that the CIA and the American military had warned Berlin and other NATO countries that Moscow was all set to launch an invasion on February 16.
This was then blazed across the headlines, with newspapers such as the Sun reporting that a “massive missile blitz” was planned, along with 200,000 troops at the ready, for 1am this morning.
But Moscow immediately began withdrawing troops from the border region and nothing happened.

Responding to the excitement, David Arakhamia, the head of the “Servant of the People” faction in Kiev’s parliament, played down chances of a Russian incursion.
“During the escalation in the spring of 2021, 220,000 Russian soldiers and equipment were concentrated around Ukraine’s borders – theoretically enough for a major attack,” he explained. “Now Russia has 123,000 troops, which is almost half the number, at the Ukrainian frontier.”
“From a military point of view, as they have explained to us, a full-scale attack is impossible…Our intelligence does not see signs that the Russians are directly preparing,” he added.
Arakhamia said he was now “99.9% confident that nothing will happen” today.

Much to the chagrin of the deep state, the Kremlin now appears to have been proven right in insisting that their rhetoric about a Russian invasion was mere “hysteria.”

Beijing also weighed in on the issue, asserting that the dubious claims of a Russian attack have damaged international relations and the economy.
“Over the last few days, the US has been fanning the threat of war, artificially creating a tense atmosphere, which has dealt a serious blow to the economy, social stability and living conditions of the people of Ukraine,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.

A 21-year-old Greek footballer suffered a sudden cardiac arrest just five minutes into a game before subsequently dying.
The tragedy happened to Alexandros Lampis at the First Municipal Stadium yesterday while he was playing for third division team Ilioupoli.
Owing to there being no defibrillator, attempts to resuscitate Lampis at the stadium failed, and despite the ground being located within a suburb of the capital of Athens, an ambulance didn’t arrive for 20 minutes.
“Football has been rocked by a series of high-profile incidents among players,” reports the Daily Mail.
“Sergio Aguero was forced to retire after experiencing chest pains playing for Barcelona while there were also scares for Victor Lindelof and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.”
“This season, Wigan striker Charlie Wyke, 28, collapsed in training, Sheffield United’s John Fleck, 30, collapsed on the pitch at Reading and Adama Traore, 25, went down clutching his chest while playing in the Champions League for Sheriff Tiraspol against Real Madrid.”
“Icelandic midfielder Emil Palsson, 28, also required resuscitation after a cardiac arrest in October.”

In November last year , German newspaper Berliner Zeitung published a report <a href="https://summit.news/2021/11/09/german-newspaper-highlights-unusually-large-number-of-soccer-players-who-have-collapsed-recently/">seeking to answer</a> why an “unusually large number of professional and amateur soccer players have collapsed recently.”
However, experts have re-assured the public that all the sudden collapses of healthy footballers in peak physical condition is just a “coincidence” and has nothing to do with the vaccine.
That didn’t stop ex-England pro Matt Le Tissier from calling for a full investigation.

“It’s been very concerning for me watching the sport that I love and I played for 17 years…in all that time that I played I never once saw any footballer leave the pitch because of heart issues,” said Le Tissier.
“Now I’m sorry, but if anybody can look at what’s happening now in the world of sport and say it’s normal for all of these people to be having heart issues, in football matches, cricket matches, basketball matches, any sport you wish, these people, the amount of people that are suffering is going through the roof,” he added.
During a viral podcast with Joe Rogan which was subsequently censored by YouTube, Dr. Peter McCullough warned that soccer players collapsing could be linked to vaccine-induced myocarditis.
McCullough warned that myocarditis has become at least 50% more common than predicted by US public health ‘experts.’
During a live radio show in the UK, ex-footballer Trevor Sinclair mentioned a potential link to vaccines, but he was cut off shortly after beginning his statement.

When the dust settled at Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing Thursday, presumed favorite <a href="https://www.vox.com/22927130/kamila-valieva-doping-trimetazidine-ban-olympics-2022">Kamila Valieva</a> did not win an Olympic medal for women’s figure skating, setting off a series of extraordinary events. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), probably breathing a sigh of relief, was allowed to conduct a medal ceremony for the top three finishers: Russia’s Anna Shcherbakova (gold) and Alexandra Trusova (silver); and Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto (bronze). Had Valieva qualified for a medal, the ceremony would have been postponed because of an investigation into her <a href="https://www.vox.com/2022/2/14/22933431/kamila-valieva-olympic-ruling-allowed-to-skate">failed drug test</a>.
But instead of relishing a moment of joy and accomplishment in winning a silver medal, Valieva’s training partner and teammate Trusova threw a temper tantrum (in Russian) saying she hates the sport, hates that everyone has a gold medal, possibly hates their teammate Shcherbakova, and hates their coach Eteri Tutberidze.

Trusova’s technical score put her well ahead of almost the entire women’s field, the very distinct majority of whom do not throw quads into their programs. The only other women who can hit quads are her teammates Shcherbakova and Valieva.
In recent years, skating broadcasts have made it super easy for casual fans to follow along with the routine. For example, in NBC’s broadcast there’s a small box that tells you the jump or technical element a skater just performed and the GOE-adjusted number of points they got. It allows viewers at home to tell who’s in the lead and where the current skater stacks up; skaters in competition can make these same calculations.
Shcherbakova, who had a six-point lead after the short program, skated after Trusova. She probably saw the jumps that Trusova threw and knew her score. Shcherbakova would know that she needed to hit at least one if not both quads to keep up with Trusova’s technical score and remain in the hunt for the medal. She landed both a quadruple flip-triple toe loop (4F+3T) combination and quadruple flip (4F) as well as combinations in the back half of her program, which gives her a 10 percent bonus. Her technical score finished at 100.49; while not as high as Trusova’s, it was enough to keep her close.

But there’s another important score that viewers don’t see (but skaters do) and doesn’t get much explanation. It’s called the Program Components Score (PCS) and is considered the presentation and artistry aspect of skating.
A PCS tally has five categories: skating skills, transitions, performance, composition, and interpretation of the music. Judges are looking for features like speed and control when it comes to “skating skills” and are looking for elements like intricate footwork and body positions when it comes to “transitions.” The last three categories in a PCS have to do with performance, rhythm, and the execution of a routine; they’re a little more self-explanatory.
Given that Trusova’s technical score virtually erased the lead Shcherbakova had, what decided the gold medal between the two was Shcherbakova’s PCS. Shcherbakova tallied a 75.26 factored score (blue):

Trusova trailed her with 70.97 points, roughly four points behind.

The <a href="https://results.isu.org/results/season2122/owg2022/CAT002RS.htm">final tally</a> was essentially in that PCS differential, as Shcherbakova finished the two-day competition with 255.95 points to Trusova’s 251.73 points. Kaori Sakamoto finished well behind them with 233.13 points.
Valieva had a dismal skate, with falls and under-rotation on many of her jumps. She finished out of medal contention about nine points behind Sakamoto at 224.09.

According to former skaters, insiders, and experts, those Program Component Scores are arguably inflated.
“In terms of quality, you’re always looking for skaters with the most speed, skaters that show a lot of power, but at the same time are able to do intricate footwork and turn and toe steps that use real skating tricks on the ice ... rather than just skating and pushing on two feet or being super plain, or skating but only using only your arms in movements,” Polina Edmunds, a former US Olympian and US National silver medalist, told me after Tuesday’s short program.

For the Russian gold and silver medalists, this artistry has traditionally been lacking. Edmunds says that Shcherbakova “is actually a skater that appears to look like a ballerina, but as soon as she starts moving, you can tell that she’s not trained” and that “a lot of her movements are very unaesthetic and unappealing.”
Trusova, similarly, is known in the sport as an athletic jumper, and her free skate tends to resemble something more along the lines of a warmup to music than a routine; jump after jump, with not much artistry in between. A former skater who asked that their name not be used described Trusova’s skating as “so unpleasant.”
Experts like Dave Lease, who runs the skating analysis YouTube Channel <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/TheSkatingLesson?app=desktop">The Skating Lesson</a>, tell me they’ve questioned how the judges have marked Trusova and Shcherbakova, both in PCS and grade of execution of her jumps. Of Trusova, he says, “There was no attempt at a program, no attempt at performance execution, and zero attempt at interpretation.”

Lease and Edmunds explained to me, separately, that skaters like Trusova and Shcherbakova’s teammate Valieva, or Japan’s Sakamoto and Wakaba Higuchi all possess markedly better skating skills (that should be rewarded in their PCS numbers). Yet somehow Russians tend to be given higher scores over their competitors.
The easiest and most frustrating explanation for the PCS numbers from the free skate and the controversial results of the short program is that as much as skating tries to be an objective sport, it’s not.
“Even though we like to feel and say that everyone has an equal chance when you step on the ice, depending on the warm-up group you’re in, depending on your past titles and medals, and depending on your history, you already have a set point that you start out at,” Edmunds told me.
Edmunds explains that judges have a preconceived idea of what the winning order of skaters is supposed to look like. They tally numbers corresponding to that order, and things like high PCS scores are given perhaps because of the history of the skater rather than what they’re putting in their programs. Lease confirms that judges “already sort of knew who the top five skaters were going to be in the short program.”
This helps explain why, for example, Trusova fell in Tuesday’s short program but still received higher PCS marks and comparable technical marks to Japan’s Higuchi, who skated much cleaner. This placed order benefit of the doubt may also affect the technical elements that the Russian skaters wield. Shcherbakova and Trusova have a tendency to pre-rotate their jumps (i.e., rotate before they’re in the air), a shortcut to getting a high number of revolutions, but this technical deficiency is not often reflected in how their jumps are scored.
Edmunds, who’s seen both sides of the sport, says this score inflation does a disservice to casual fans who tune in at big events like the Olympics and can’t understand the discrepancies. But, she told me, the most discouraging effect is on the athletes.
“It undercuts achievement from people who have a different style on the ice,” Edmunds said. “Speaking of the rest of the season leading up to this, and in the past few seasons, this has absolutely happened. And that’s just unfortunate because there are strong athletes from all over and they all deserve the same recognition.”
Heading into the women’s event, the big story was whether or not Valieva would win a medal. Valieva was allowed to skate at the event because of an arbitration decision, but the International Olympic Committee said that because she was under investigation for doping, she would only be awarded a medal after the case closes and if she were ostensibly found not guilty. Given the protests to her skating in the first place, the IOC probably was relieved she didn’t place so as to avoid another round of controversy about the medal ceremony.

But just because she didn’t win and just because the Olympics are coming to a close doesn’t mean that the saga will stop. The World Anti-Doping Agency said that because Valieva is a minor, they will be investigating the adults supervising Valieva — which the skating world has taken to mean coach Eteri Tutberidze and her entourage.
There’s also the matter of Tutberidze not only coaching Valieva but coaching Shcherbakova and Trusova too. The shadow of Valieva’s doping extends to them and their results because of their shared mentors. And this all is punctuated by Trusova’s teary-eyed tantrum about Tutberidze “knowing everything” and Tutberidze <a href="https://twitter.com/Fran_klymydear/status/1494315172890091524?s=20&t=0m4vSxOEh__2CI_y-QP2GA">reportedly telling</a> Trusova “this is your defeat.”
Though the Olympic women’s event wrapped up on Thursday, the drama, controversy, and investigation surrounding Russia’s team show no signs of stopping.

Migrants are sewing their lips shut to protest the policy that stranded them in Mexico

Migrants stranded in southern Mexico because of US and Mexican border policies are taking increasingly drastic measures to draw attention to their plight. On Tuesday, a dozen migrants staged a protest in which they <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/migrants-sew-their-mouths-shut-quest-mexico-passage-us-border-2022-02-16/">sewed their lips together</a> and went on a hunger strike.
They are among the thousands staying in what has become known as an “open-air prison” in the city of Tapachula on Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala. Migrants there have struggled to access food and shelter, and have reported being preyed on by government officials.
Facing pressure to find ways to limit the number of migrants requesting entry to the United States, Mexican immigration authorities will not permit the migrants to leave the city unless they have some form of legal immigration status allowing them to move freely through the country, such as asylum. Hundreds <a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-caribbean-central-america-mexico-737dfc9255c4b82dee04c3273ecd8124">tried to escape</a> last month, but were intercepted and detained by Mexican immigration authorities.
Many of Tapachula’s migrants have already applied for legal status so that they can travel north to the US border. Mexican immigration authorities are supposed to process those applications within 90 business days. But some migrants have been waiting for more than a year due to a surge in applications that has led to backlogs. In 2021, <a href="https://www.gob.mx/cms/uploads/attachment/file/690741/Cierre_Diciembre-2021__1-Enero-2022_.pdf">nearly 90,000 people applied</a> for asylum in Tapachula, more than triple the number who did so the year before. Applications from vulnerable groups — including children, pregnant people, victims of crimes, people with disabilities, older adults, and their immediate family members — are currently being <a href="https://www.gob.mx/segob/prensa/reprueba-inm-exposicion-de-personas-migrantes-a-autolesiones">prioritized</a>.
The migrants reportedly <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/migrants-sew-their-mouths-shut-quest-mexico-passage-us-border-2022-02-16/">used plastic needles and thread</a> to sew their mouths as a means of pressuring COMAR, the Mexican refugee agency, to speed up processing of their applications. Migrants have also asked the Mexican government to let them leave the city and establish a <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/8/28/we-cant-survive-migrants-in-mexico-protest-slow-asylum-system">humanitarian corridor</a> so that they could get safe passage to the US border. Though the migrant community in Tapachula has staged vigils and <a href="https://www.telesurenglish.net/news/Migrants-in-Hunger-Strike-to-Demand-Free-Transit-through-Mexico-20210914-0009.html">hunger strikes</a> before in protest, Tuesday’s actions represent an escalation and a sign that Mexico isn’t able to meet their humanitarian needs.
That said, Tapachula’s migrants wouldn’t be trapped in the city — and the protesting migrants wouldn’t be pushed to such tactics — if it weren’t for Trump-era immigration policies that the Biden administration has adopted as its own.
Migrants are being kept from entering the US under a pandemic-related border restriction first implemented by the Trump administration, known as the Title 42 policy, which allows the federal government to bar noncitizens from entering the US for health reasons. Although <a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/program-forced-migration-and-health/epidemiologists-and-public-health-experts-reiterate-urgent-call-end-title-42">public health experts</a> have said Title 42 doesn’t help to stop the spread of Covid-19, the Biden administration has embraced it. That has allowed the Biden administration to carry out 1.1 million expulsions to Mexico in the past year, including to the <a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2022/01/1108892">state of Chiapas</a>, where Tapachula is located.
In 2019, the Mexican government agreed to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/07/13/740009105/how-mexico-beefs-up-immigration-enforcement-to-meet-trumps-terms">ramp up immigration enforcement</a> on its southern border in order to avert US tariffs Trump had threatened. Though the Biden administration hasn’t continued to threaten those tariffs, it has dangled carrots of <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/biden-mexico-immigration-coronavirus-vaccine/2021/03/18/a63a3426-8791-11eb-8a67-f314e5fcf88d_story.html">vaccine doses</a> and <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2021/12/02/immigrants-remain-in-mexico-policy-restart-asylum/">development funds</a> in exchange for Mexico’s cooperation on limiting migration to the US border.
The effect of those policies has been to keep migrants away from US borders and out of mind for most Americans. And it’s been largely successful in silencing migrants unless they go to extreme lengths to be heard.
“We are going to sew our mouths ... so that they listen to us,” one migrant in Tapachula <a href="https://twitter.com/CiroGomezL/status/1493820978002022402?s=20&t=bPKP5UCgd2nIeRMIvWJCyQ">told</a> the Mexican news agency Imagen Noticias in Spanish.
In a <a href="https://www.gob.mx/segob/prensa/reprueba-inm-exposicion-de-personas-migrantes-a-autolesiones">statement</a> issued in Spanish on Tuesday, Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM) condemned the migrants’ actions as “senseless,” and claimed that it is already tending to their needs.
“It is also worrying that these measures have been carried out with the consent and support of those who claim to be their representatives, with the intention of putting pressure on the immigration authorities regarding care that is already provided,” the agency said.
But the kind of care provided to migrants in Tapachula isn’t adequate. The city simply doesn’t have the infrastructure to support a sudden influx of people. For months, some 3,000 migrants were living at a <a href="https://nacla.org/news/2022/01/06/tapachula-haitian-migrants">campsite</a> at Tapachula’s Olympic Stadium, where they had no access to clean water, food, health care, and other basic services, and shared only a few portable toilets.
That camp was disbanded in December, but there still isn’t enough <a href="https://www.borderreport.com/hot-topics/immigration/mexico-migrants-sew-lips-shut-at-border-protest/">affordable housing and room in local shelters</a> to support the migrant population and it’s not clear whether or when the Mexican government will build more shelters. Many are <a href="https://twitter.com/CiroGomezL/status/1493820978002022402?s=20&t=t3KTbMF0ACYLOp3pxSqf9Q">sleeping on the streets</a> near INM’s local offices and don’t have work permits, meaning that they can’t secure stable employment that would allow them to support themselves while they wait. And they have <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CDHFrayMatias/photos/pcb.5051016201598738/5050902678276757">reported</a> being mistreated, arrested in violent and arbitrary manners, and robbed of their money and their phones by Mexican authorities.
Though Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard has <a href="https://aldianews.com/articles/politics/new-record-asylum-applications-mexico/68746">promised</a> to reduce wait times by streamlining the bureaucracy around the asylum process, he has also acknowledged that the government simply doesn’t have the staffing and resources to meet the explosion in need.
The US could share the load by resuming processing of migrants at its own borders and allowing them to pursue claims to humanitarian protection, as is their legal right. Instead, it has offloaded its immigration responsibilities onto its neighbor.
