<p>Federal authorities have charged a U.S. Border Patrol agent who killed a Mexican teenager in a cross-border shooting with second-degree murder.</p>
<p>Luis Parra, the attorney for the mother of Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez, told The Associated Press that a federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted agent Lonnie Swartz.</p>
<p>"The Elena Rodriguez Family is grateful to the DOJ (Department of Justice) for this first step in the pursuit of justice, and remain steadfast in their resolve to seek full transparency from the U.S. Border Patrol on behalf of Jose Antonio," Parra said.</p>
<p>Sean Chapman, Swartz's attorney, did not respond to a late call seeking comment. He told The Arizona Daily Star that he expects his client to plead not guilty at an Oct. 9 arraignment. The U.S. Attorney's Office also has not responded to a request for comment.</p>
<p>Swartz is also facing a federal civil rights lawsuit in the death of 16-year-old Elena Rodriguez, who was in Nogales, Sonora, on Oct. 10, 2012, when Swartz shot him from Nogales, Arizona.</p>
<p>The Border Patrol has said that Elena Rodriguez was among a group of rock-throwers endangering agents' lives. But his family says the boy was walking home from a basketball game with friends and wasn't armed or throwing rocks.</p>
<p>An autopsy revealed Elena Rodriguez had been shot about 10 times.</p>
<p>The case sparked outrage and came amid criticism that the Border Patrol uses force indiscriminately, a charge the agency has adamantly denied. Border Patrol agents generally are allowed to use lethal force against rock throwers because rocks can be potentially deadly. Rock throwers have attacked agents more than 1,700 times since 2010, according to the agency.</p>
<p>The ACLU says the Border Patrol has a systematic problem with use of force and filed a lawsuit in Tucson on behalf of the boy's mother.</p>
<p>Chapman tried to get the lawsuit thrown out on the grounds that the U.S. Constitution doesn't apply to Elena Rodriguez, a Mexican citizen, because he was in Mexico at the time of the shooting.</p>
<p>A federal judge in July ruled that the lawsuit can go forward.</p>
<p>In a similar case in Texas, a federal appeals court ruled that a teen killed in Mexico by a border agent in El Paso was not protected by the Constitution.</p>
<p>In that case, U.S. Border Patrol agent Jesus Mesa Jr. shot 15-year-old Sergio Adrian Hernandez Guereca in June 2010 near a bridge between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. Authorities said Mesa was trying to arrest immigrants who had illegally crossed into the country when rock-throwers attacked him. Mesa fired his weapon across the Rio Grande, striking Hernandez Guereca twice.</p>
<p>A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals originally said Hernandez Guereca's family could sue Mesa. But the full court overturned that ruling in April.</p>

<p>Over the weekend Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli raised the price of the malaria and toxoplasmosis drug Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 per pill, an action that outraged people nationwide and made them question why pharmaceutical companies have unilateral power to raise prices on the drugs on which so many of us depend.</p>
<p>Shkreli initially defended this bald-faced price gouging, saying the company would use the increased revenue to develop a “better, safer, more effective version” of Daraprim. The outrageousness of his position became apparent when even PhRMA, the lobbying arm of the very profitable pharmaceutical industry, tweeted that Turing “does not represent the values” of PhRMA’s members.</p>
<p>Shkreli backed down from the price increase (how much remains to be seen), but he sparked an overdue debate about the outrageous cost of life-saving medicines. Although Shkreli’s greed and insensitivity to suffering has rightly been condemned, he may have unintentionally made an argument for an increase in public funding for pharmaceutical research.</p>
<p>The problem with our drug-development system is that it puts a price tag on human suffering. Currently, big pharmaceutical companies are highly motivated to develop drugs for people who can pay for them. For people who cannot afford to pay, the drug that would cure their diseases or ease their suffering may never materialize.</p>
<p>By examining drug development through the lens of return on investment, biotech firms are evaluating human suffering in terms of its dollar value. Shkreli implied this when he said his company makes Daraprim in such small quantities that we should not worry about the suffering his price increase will cause, because only a few people would be affected.</p>
<p>The callousness of this thought process is chilling, and places us onto very slippery moral and ethical grounds. The United Nations considers health a human right, but when the firms that produce and control the drugs that keep people healthy view health as a moneymaking opportunity, situations like this are bound to arise.</p>
<p>However, money does not always trump human suffering. Take for example Mectizan, a drug developed in the 1970s and 80s by Merck to treat Onchocerciasis, also known as River Blindness, a parasitic infection that makes people go blind. The majority of people suffering from River Blindness live in Sub-Saharan Africa, and cannot afford to buy Mectizan. Merck decided to donate as much Mectizan as necessary to eliminate River Blindness, a commitment they maintain to this day. Mectizan shows how a pharmaceutical company concerned with the public’s well-being benefits everyone.</p>

<p>Publicly funded research could develop an alternative to Daraprim without having to raise the price of the drug it intends to replace, because its funding would not depend on market forces. Such research could also develop drugs to treat the so-called Neglected Tropical Diseases that create such immense suffering in the developing world, but which hold no interest for for-profit biotech companies.</p>
<p>If it seems strange that the U.S. would invest this much time and money into diseases that are primarily associated with distant countries, keep in mind that Neglected Tropical Diseases, including Chagas disease and toxoplasmosis, are endemic in the United States as well. We just haven’t funded programs to address them.</p>
<p>The U.S. government does spend some money on drug development. In 2015 the National Institutes of Health spent $657 million on collaborations with private pharmaceutical firms, but this effort was not to develop new drugs. Using our current grant-funded medical research model, the Centers for Disease Control or NIH could offer grants to research drugs that are vital for the public’s health yet do not interest for-profit companies. The government would own the patents on these drugs, the same way it owns data from the research it funds, protecting them from price gouging by greedy biotech firms. The government could subcontract the manufacturing and distribute the drugs through public hospitals, ensuring that avarice is kept out of the pricing process.</p>
<p>In an ironic twist, we can thank Shkreli for illuminating the disconnect between public health’s humane motives and biotech firms’ profit motives. Leaving drug development up to the market puts us at risk of prioritizing the health of people who can afford healthcare over the health of people who cannot. While a few politicians have called for regulations on drug prices, this would be treating the symptoms of the problem instead of the cause.</p>
<p>An increase in public funding for pharmaceutical research would address the cause of these problems. It would ensure that even unprofitable drugs might be developed. And while this would be an expensive undertaking – researchers estimates that each new compound the Food and Drug Administration approves costs $2.6 billion to develop – publicaly funded pharmaceutical research would ensure that people’s suffering is not judged by their net worth. And it could stop the Martin Shkrelis of the world from harming people’s lives by meddling with their medications.</p>

<p>On September 4, after ten days of widespread street protests against the biotech giant Monsanto’s expansion into Guatemalan territory, groups of indigenous people joined by social movements, trade unions and farmer and women’s organizations won a victory when congress finally repealed the legislation that had been approved in June.</p>
<p>The demonstrations were concentrated outside the Congress and Constitutional Court in Guatemala City during more than a week, and coincided with several Mayan communities and organizations defending food sovereignty through court injunctions in order to stop the Congress and the President, Otto Perez Molina, from letting the new law on protection of plant varieties, known as the “Monsanto Law,” take effect.</p>
<p>On September 2, the Mayan communities of Sololá, a mountainous region 125 kilometers west from the capital, took to the streets and blocked several main roads. At this time a list of how individual congressmen had voted on the approval of the legislation in June was circulating.</p>
<p>When Congress convened on September 4, Mayan people were waiting outside for a response in favor of their movement, demanding a complete cancellation of the law – something very rarely seen in Guatemala. But this time they proved not to have marched in vain. After some battles between the presidential Patriotic Party (PP) and the Renewed Democratic Liberty Party (LIDER), the Congress finally decided not to review the legislation, but cancel it.</p>
<p>Lolita Chávez from the Mayan People’s Council summarized the essence of what has been at stake these last weeks of peaceful protests as follows: “Corn taught us Mayan people about community life and its diversity, because when one cultivates corn one realizes that there is a variety of crops such as herbs and medical plants depending on the corn plant as well. We see that in this coexistence the corn is not selfish, the corn shows us how to resist and how to relate with the surrounding world.”</p>
<p><strong>Controversies Surrounded Law</strong></p>
<p>The Monsanto Law would have given exclusivity on patented seeds to a handful of transnational companies. Mayan people and social organizations claimed that the new law violated the Constitution and the Mayan people’s right to traditional cultivation of their land in their ancestral territories.</p>
<p>Antonio González from the National Network in Defense of Food Sovereignty and Biodiversity commented in a press conference August 21: “This law is an attack on a traditional Mayan cultivation system which is based on the corn plant but which also includes black beans and herbs; these foods are a substantial part of the staple diet of rural people.”</p>
<p>The new legislation would have opened up the market for genetically modified seeds which would have threatened to displace natural seeds and end their diversity. It would have created an imbalance between transnational companies and local producers in Guatemala where about 70 per cent of the population dedicate their life to small-scale agricultural activities. That is a serious threat in a country where many people live below the poverty line and in extreme poverty and where children suffer from chronic malnutrition and often starve to death.</p>
<p>The law was approved in June without prior discussion, information and participation from the most affected. It was a direct consequence of the free trade agreement with the US, ratified in 2005. However, recently the protests started to grow and peaked a couple of weeks ago with a lot of discussions, statements and demonstrations.</p>
<p>At first the government ignored the protests and appeared to be more interested in engaging in superficial forms of charity like provision of food aid while ignoring the wider and structural factors that cause and perpetuate poverty in Guatemala such as unequal land distribution, deep rooted inequalities, racism, to name but a few.</p>
<p>But soon enough they decided to act. Even though politicians claimed not to act on social demands, it is without doubt a decision taken after enormous pressure from different social groups in society.</p>
<p><strong>Criminalizing the Mayan People – Again</strong></p>
<p>There was a great risk that the Monsanto Law would have made criminals of already repressed small farmers who are just trying to make ends meet and doing what they have done for generations – cultivating corn and black beans for their own consumption. The Monsanto Law meant that they would not have been able to grow and harvest anything that originates from natural seeds. Farmers would be breaking the laws if these natural seeds had been mixed with patented seeds from other crops as a result of pollination or wind, unless they had had a license for the patented seed from a transnational corporation like Monsanto.</p>
<p>Another risk expressed by ecologists was the fear that the costs for the patented seeds would have caused an increase in prices and as consequence caused a worsened food crisis for those families who could not afford to buy a license to sow.</p>
<p>Academics, together with the Mayan people, also feared that the law would have intensified already existing fierce social conflicts between local Mayan communities and transnational companies in a country historically and violently torn apart.</p>
<p><strong>Mayan People and Mother Earth</strong></p>
<p>Currently international companies are very interested in gaining control of the abundant and rich natural assets that Guatemala possesses. There is just one problem: the Mayan people – or actually most people – in Guatemala do not agree with a policy of treating nature like a commodity to be sold off piece by piece, especially when they receive nothing in return. It is very difficult to argue that it is a rentable business for Guatemalan society as a whole, and less the local communities, when it is a rather small but powerful economic elite which benefits on behalf of the environment, nature and society.</p>
<p>So what happens when the people organize in defense of their territory? The international companies call the government and have them use whatever means necessary to remove those standing in their way so they can construct megaprojects like mines or hydroelectric dams or extend monocultures in any region they see fit without much concern for those who might be affected.</p>
<p>Last month three men were killed when police used violent force to evict a community whose population had organized itself to protest against a hydroelectric megaproject in their community in Alta Verapaz. Hundreds of police officers were sent to the area on orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mauricio López Bonilla. It was not an exceptional case by any means.</p>
<p><strong>Ongoing Conflict</strong></p>
<p>As for the Monsanto Law, for a chilling reminder of where this was most likely headed, one need look no further than the USA: according to information from Food Democracy Now, a grassroots community for sustainable food system, Monsanto’s GMO Roundup Ready soybeans, the world’s leading chemical and biotech seed company, admits to filing 150 lawsuits against America’s family farmers, while settling another 700 out of court for undisclosed amounts. This has caused fear and resentment in rural America and driven dozens of farmers into bankruptcy.</p>
<p>It is impossible to predict how this controversy might unfold, but the reality in Guatemala today is one marked by an ongoing conflict between the government and the Mayan people, who constitute over half of the population.</p>
<p>Nim Sanik, Maya Kaqchikel from Chimaltenango comments on the victory over the Monsanto Law: “The fight to preserve collective property of Mayan communities such as vegetable seeds, which historically have served as a source of development and survival for the Mayan civilization, is a way to confront the open doors that the neoliberal governments have widely open in favor of national and transnational corporations that genetically modify and commercialize the feeding of mankind. We have just taken the first step on a long journey in our struggle to conquer the sovereignty of the people in Guatemala.”</p>

<p>Most people haven’t heard about the United Nations <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/" rel="nofollow">Sustainable Development Goals</a> (SDGs). And if you have, there’s probably a rosy halo emanating from the deep recesses of your subconscious. If so, the UN, the World Bank, the Gates Foundation, ONE.org, Save the Children and other counterparts of the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/27/opinion/the-charitable-industrial-complex.html?_r=1" rel="nofollow">charitable-industrial complex</a> have done their job well.</p>
<p>On the eve of the Sept. 25 UN summit – when the new SDGs, a set of 17 goals and 169 targets, will replace the <a href="http://www.unmillenniumproject.org/goals/" rel="nofollow">Millennium Development Goals</a> (MDGs) – there is a battle for mindshare over the merits of this plan. The SDGs are important because they are a once-in-a-generation declaration of what the world’s power elites are willing to publicly commit. In fact, they are the only shared international agreement to address global poverty. As such, they capture many of the central assumptions and norms that underpin the global political economy.</p>

<p><strong>Keep Calm and Carry on Shopping</strong></p>
<p>At first glance, the rhetoric of the SDGs seems irresistible. They talk about eliminating poverty “in all its forms, everywhere” by 2030, through "sustainable development" and even addressing extreme inequality. None of which we would argue with of course. But as with all half-truths, one just has to dig beneath the surface for motivations to unravel.</p>
<p><a href="http://wer.worldeconomicsassociation.org/files/WEA-WER-4-Woodward.pdf" rel="nofollow">Recent research</a> by economist David Woodward shows that to lift the number of people living under $1.25 a day (in <a href="https://datahelpdesk.worldbank.org/knowledgebase/articles/114944-what-is-an-international-dollar" rel="nofollow">“international dollars”</a>) above the official SDG poverty line, we would have to increase global GDP by 15 times – assuming the best-case-scenario in growth rates and inequality trends from the last 30 years. That means the average global GDP per capita would have to rise to nearly $100,000 in 15 years, triple the average U.S. income right now. In a global economy that is so inefficient at distributing wealth, where <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-10-02/top-1-got-93-of-income-growth-as-rich-poor-gap-widened" rel="nofollow">93 cents of every dollar of wealth created ends up in the hands of the richest 1%</a>, more growth is only going to enrich the rich while destroying the planet in its wake.</p>
<p>Of course, it is completely possible to achieve the necessary goal of reducing poverty, but not through the UN’s growth-based, business-as-usual strategy. Poverty can only be eradicated by 2030 if we address two critical issues head on: income inequality and endless material growth.</p>
<p>First, we must address the enormous inequality that has accumulated in the last 200 years. The richest 1% of humanity will very soon own over half of private wealth. And indeed, large increases in the socioeconomic position of the poorer half can be achieved through very modest inequality reductions. For example, <a href="http://www.worldbank.org/en/research" rel="nofollow">a hypothetical doubling of their share of global income</a>, from 4% to 8%, even if it came entirely at the expense of the richest 5%, would only reduce the incomes of these top earners by less than 10%.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdgsproposal.html" rel="nofollow">SDGs inequality goal</a> (target 10.1) allows current trends of income concentration to continually increase until 2029 before they start to decline. This totally ignores the structure of our economic system which creates inequality in the very rules that enforce and articulate the current distribution of wealth.</p>
<p>The other essential task is for the world’s nations to adopt <a href="http://therules.org/petition/sdg-open-letter/" rel="nofollow">a saner measure of human progress</a>; one that gears us not towards endless GDP growth based on extraction and consumption, but towards the wellbeing of humanity and our planet as a whole. There are <a href="http://b.3cdn.net/nefoundation/800a24dd60a18be7ea_vem6bnetw.pdf" rel="nofollow">plenty of options to choose from</a>, all of which have been ignored in the SDGs. Instead, Target 17.19 says only that they will, “by 2030, build on existing initiatives to develop measurements of progress on sustainable development that complement GDP.” In effect, the SDGs perpetuate severe poverty and leave this fundamental problem to future generations.</p>

<p><strong>Magical Accounting</strong></p>
<p>Much of the credibility of the Sustainable Development Goals rests on the story that their predecessors – the Millennium Development Goals – have, on the whole, been a success. They have, so we are told, halved poverty since 1990.</p>
<p>The clear implication is that the basic model of GDP growth is working so well that we should trust it to finish the job. And whereas it’s certainly true that progress has been made on some problems in some places, many researchers, <a href="http://www.ashgate.com/default.aspx?page=637&calcTitle=1&isbn=9780754678496&lang=cy-GB" rel="nofollow">including the authors of this article</a>, have shown that this does not add up to overall success. In fact, the progress has been so uneven, and the core data has been so massaged over the years, that it’s more accurate to say that the claim to have halved poverty is more magical accounting than verifiable fact.</p>
<p>For example, shortly after the MDGs were agreed, the UN moved from an aim of halving absolute numbers to halving the proportion of people in poverty. Then, they went from halving the proportion of impoverished people globally to just focusing on the developing world. They even went back in time to change the baseline year of recording, from 2000 back to 1990, which conveniently allowed them to co-opt all of China’s gains in lifting people out of poverty in the 1990s, despite the fact that China’s policies bear little resemblance to the UN’s prescriptions. And probably the most brazen of chimeric acts: they even changed the definition of poverty, <a href="http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2014/08/exposing-great-poverty-reductio-201481211590729809.html" rel="nofollow">moving their international poverty line (IPL) multiple times</a>.</p>
<p>It seems the MDGs are a virtual Potemkin Village, stage managed to keep the true poverty trends from being exposed. For the successor goals to have any credibility, they must adopt a more realistic measure of poverty, actually address the root causes, and guard against the kind of statistical manipulation that so blighted the MDGs.</p>

<p><strong>The Siren’s Call</strong></p>
<p>The obvious question is why the UN and others in the development industry would want to deceive the public, and arguably themselves.</p>
<p>At one level, the objective of the UN, big foundations and other non-governmental organizations is to convince us of their competence, thereby creating enough support and interest to justify their existence and make them seen as worthy guardians of global issues – but not create so much political buoyancy and public attention that they would have to address the rules of the global operating system that has so benefited them. All the structural incentives are there to manipulate the figures and market themselves as a success.</p>
<p>Then, of course, there is the <a href="http://www.socialwatch.org/node/16521" rel="nofollow">influence of the corporate-political elites</a> who both fund most of these organizations and require the "good news" trend lines to defend and maintain the status quo. Add to that the personal and professional ambition of individuals within some of these institutions and you have the perfect conditions for lies and half-truths to win the day. In this way, the SDGs serve as both our siren and our lullaby.</p>
<p>We must understand that the development sector has two contradictory roles: they tell us that there are critical global issues to which we must pay heed, but then ensure us that they have the issues under control. This is why the UN, the World Bank and others have been so determined to convince us that they are competent and have the right plan. In fact, the UN has reached out to Madison Avenue in the hopes of marketing the SDGs, which they have <a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/united-nations-working-worlds-largest-advertising-campaign-164497" rel="nofollow">positioned as the “world’s biggest advertising campaign.”</a> They have even created <a href="http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/SDGs-child-friendly.pdf" rel="nofollow">a child-friendly propaganda kit</a> for schoolteachers. If they can’t actually solve global problems, they can at least make us, and our children, think they’re solving them.</p>
<p>As the fig leaves are being ornately decorated, it would serve civil society well to remember that we cannot fix deeply entrenched social problems with the same logic that created them in the first place. Poverty, inequality and climate change are natural outcomes of our current set of economic rules. More growth in the absence of structural change is only going to worsen the lives of the world’s majority. But in the topsy-turvy world of Western development, facts are malleable, history is irrelevant, public perception is the playing field, self-interest is the foundation of benevolence, and GDP growth will lift all boats. It’s time to separate the siren and the lullaby.</p>

<p>The United Nations is purposefully denying Christians visas to enter the US. There are evil in the American government who don’t want to allow Christians in the US, and yet they want to bring in multitudes of Islamic invaders into the US. <p>According to <a href="http://www.christianpost.com/news/christians-are-being-denied-us-visas-while-cradle-of-christianity-is-wiped-off-the-map-evangelicals-warn-145641/page1.html" target="_blank">one report:</a></p>

<p>A faith-based global ministry has initiated a “Fostering Families” program in which it’s calling on over 1,000 churches in America to take in persecuted refugees from the ongoing crisis. Rev. Kevin Jessip, president of Global Strategic Alliance, said Christians are being wiped out from the Middle East, while at the same time being denied visas in the United States, and it’s an urgent time for the rest of the Christian body to wake up and help.</p>
<p>“It’s inappropriate for the Untied States of America to discriminate against a minority religion who is in dire need of asylum. These are proven cases at the UNHCR that we’ve seen of people who have been denied, and are in jeopardy of losing their lives,” Jessip told The Christian Post in a phone interview on Thursday.</p>

<p><a href="http://shoebat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/putin_north_pole.jpg"><img alt="putin_north_pole" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-85797" height="410" src="http://shoebat.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/putin_north_pole.jpg" width="620" /></a>The recent arrival of the Russian Marines and Air Force to the Syrian port-city of Tartous has generated a significant amount of interest around the world, as the possibility of Russia’s direct military intervention becomes the focal point of the war on ISIS. To add to Russia piling up its military strength in Syria, on tuesday morning, a <a href="http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/chinese-military-personnel-expected-to-arrive-in-syria/">Chinese naval vessel</a> traveled through Egypt’s Suez Canal to enter the Mediterranean Sea scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks (6 weeks) to the port-city of Tartous in Syria that will join the Russian presence in Syria. And to add more salt to Obama’s injury, Russia is now getting militarily involved not jut in Syria, but also <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/09/24/russians-syrians-and-iranians-setting-up-military-coordination-cell-in-baghdad/">in Iraq</a> as it moved without radar detection, 24 attack jets from bases in Russia through Iran before traveling into Iraq.</p>

<p>Putin to show he means business the air strikes on ISIS began earlier this week which were also accompanied by ground attacks near the Kweiris air base in the east of Aleppo province, where government troops have long been surrounded by ISIS, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.</p>
<p>Vladimir Putin’s explicit promise to go ahead with airstrikes against terrorist targets in Syria with or without the help of the US effectively marks the end of Washington’s years-old effort to destabilize and ultimately remove the Assad regime.</p>
<p>To send the clear message to Washington, Putin appears to have a contingency that involves another world power that was absent from the U.S. led Anti-ISIS Coalition: China.</p>
<p>Russia has made it abundantly clear that they are taking an active role in this conflict, but the news of the Chinese military to Syria provides more insight into their contingency.</p>
<p>Many are excited about more force coming to Syria to destroy ISIS and ask since Russia is beginning military operations: will Russia begin to coordinate with the U.S. to destroy ISIS?</p>
<p>Such cooperation or intent to destroy ISIS is food for the sheep. If Russia or the U.S. are bent on destroying ISIS why then is Russia not joining U.S. led Coalition and why is Russia not seeking the assistance of the neighboring Arab countries to combat ISIS? If the idea is to destroy ISIS, why would the United States which is also waging its own aerial campaign against ISIS reject help? While the media argues on the strategy of both sides to combat ISIS, everyone knows that the U.S. is able to squash ISIS in few weeks. Why then the U.S. had minimal success in obstructing ISIS growth in Syria and Iraq?</p>
<p>Obviously, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf would object on Russia’s involvement since their main goal is to destroy Shiite expansion represented by Iran which Bashar Al-Assad is their stronghold in the Levant.</p>
<p>So as it seems, the evidence is clear, the military buildup has nothing to do with fighting ISIS. Simply put, the two major military superpowers, Russia and the U.S. appear to be at it again; both are actively flexing their muscles through their proxies where the U.S. supports the rebels while Russia supports the Syrian Army. With Russia moving its chips, dare any Sunni extremists and/or CIA-trained “freedom fighters” or Turkey intent on seizing control of the country will now need to go through Russia and Iran.</p>

<p>The third players, Turkey, Saudi Arabia including the Gulf states fear Iran’s encroachments and the loss of their sphere of influence on the Sunni Muslim world. This is what will become the crux of the whole matter.</p>
<p>So to answer our original question is that all the players have a use for ISIS. To completely destroy ISIS would prevent all the excuses for one party or the other to wield its global dominance.</p>
<p>The sooner the sheep put this equation in their head, the sooner they will begin to understand Armageddon which is a <em>world conflict</em> centered in <em>the Middle East</em>.</p>
<p>ISIS is useful for the U.S. as well as for Russia and Turkey even as far as <a href="http://shoebat.com/2015/02/02/japanese-government-turkey-currently-using-isis-order-revive-empires-preparation-world-war-iii/">Japan which has major use for ISIS</a> where ISIS is the excuse for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s re-interpretation of the Japanese constitution in regards to weapons  allowing Japan to also play a stronger role in global affairs.</p>
<p>Again, Armageddon is a global affair where global powers arise in a showdown that is centered on the Middle East.</p>
<p>The crucial issue to understand is that the strong Russian military commitment to redress the military balance on the ground would jeopardize Turkey’s calculations concerning Syria.</p>
<p>During Erdogan’s latest visit to Moscow, which came on the heels of Russia’s latest military buildup in Syria, Putin shunned Erdogan. Turkey’s quest to create a safe zone within <a href="http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2015/09/turkey-russia-deepening-syrian-impasse-military-support.html" target="_blank">Syrian territory</a> is hampered by Russia’s involvement. To add more problems not only for Washington, but for Turkey as <a href="http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-09-24/chinese-military-personnel-aerial-assets-allegedly-en-route-syria">China (the biblical “armies from the east”) showed up</a>. Beijing made a concerted effort this year to project the growing power and influence of the PLA navy. That effort has so far involved an unprecedented land reclamation effort in the Spratlys, a “rescue” operation in the Yemeni port of Aden, and a surprise appearance off the coast of Alaska.</p>

<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke on Sept. 22 said of his then-upcoming trip to Moscow, regarding “The <a href="http://www.trtturk.com/haber/erdogan-cozum-surecini-yikan-onlardir-152072.html" target="_blank">Syria question</a>” now that Russia (North to Turkey) and China (east of Turkey) have Erdogan’s plans in check. What Erdogan said sounded right from Daniel 11:44 “But then unpleasant news from <span style="text-decoration: underline;">the east</span> and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">the north</span> will alarm him” (Daniel 11:44):</p>

<p>“The first topic of my visit that will take place tomorrow is about the inauguration of a magnificent mosque built in Moscow. It is a gigantic mosque that can accommodate around 10,000 people. After that, we will have talks with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin. Naturally, the Syria question will be at the heart of our talks. … <span style="text-decoration: underline;">The news we receive</span> [from Moscow] <span style="text-decoration: underline;">is not pleasant</span>. We do have a special relationship with Russia and having such a relationship and then <span style="text-decoration: underline;">hearing the unpleasant news</span> naturally made us unhappy. I hope to leave Moscow after reaching an agreement with Putin.”</p>

<p>As we have been stating all along, Daniel says it also, Russia and Turkey will end up at odds when it comes to the power play in the region. Even after Erdogan’s visit. There was nothing tangible offered in terms of Turkey’s foreign policy objectives in Syria.</p>

<p>The power struggle between Putin and Erdogan is beginning to show Erdogan envies Putin. Only a few days ago, a Foreign Policy article on Erdogan contained the following lines:</p>

<p>“Erdogan’s ambition is nothing less than to be a modern-day Sultan, a near-absolute executive whose power and authority cannot be challenged or checked. Think an <a href="http://foreignpolicy.com/2015/09/21/erdogans-deadly-ambitions-turkey-elections-president/" target="_blank">Anatolian version</a> of Russian President Vladimir Putin and you’ll begin to get the idea.”</p>

<p>Russia does want to combat ISIS, but only to protect Assad’s regime from Turkey and the U.S. The plan is similar to the U.S.’ idea of a “coalition” of air forces, but unlike the U.S. Russia is far more involved on the ground; this is something the U.S. and their allies have avoided since the inception of their war against ISIS. As it seems, we are getting closer to seeing the Middle East situation escalate where world powers play the game of chess dreaming that the winner keep all. What they are unaware of is that the chess game is being played from above, where the devil moves Obama and Erdogan while God does His move and has them all in check. In the end, the devil will lose and is cast out forever.</p>

<p>The Iranian-Russian alliance, which wants total control of Iraq and Syria will push Russian hegemony over the Middle East as Russia sent military forces now to Iraq. “They are popping up everywhere” says one senior U.S. official describing the arrival of Russian military personnel in Baghdad, Iraq.</p>
<p>The situation is heating up as Russia is now getting militarily involved not jut in Syria, but also <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/09/24/russians-syrians-and-iranians-setting-up-military-coordination-cell-in-baghdad/">in Iraq</a>.</p>
<p>Undetected by radar, the Russians were able to move 24 attack jets (12 Sukhoi Su-25 “Frogfoot” and a dozen Sukhoi Su-24 “Fencer” attack aircraft) in “tight formations” under the “steady stream” of the large Russian An-124 cargo planes that have been ferrying supplies from bases in Russia through Iran before traveling into Iraq.</p>

<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin did his move just prior to the planned meeting between him and President Obama in New York Monday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. Obama administration has voiced concern regarding Russia’s involvement, at least in Syria.</p>
<p>Putin as it seems has President Obama in check since he is thwarting Obama’s plans as the United States has publicly expressed alarm since Russia-supported Syrian loyalists could clash with U.S.-backed rebel groups. Direct Russian intervention in Syria will help break Russia out of isolation and will force Washington to begin direct military-to-military talks with the Russians on Syria.</p>
<p>Putin as it seems is challenging President Obama and has fostered ties with the governments in both Syria and Iraq and now has moved his chips in both nations sending a message to Obama that Putin is boss.  The situation sends a blow to President Obama’s plan since four years after President Barack Obama’s August 2011 <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2011-08-18/obama-is-said-to-be-ready-to-urge-assad-to-step-down-after-syria-bloodshed">ultimatum</a> that the Syrian president must go, now Russia’s involvement and world leaders descending on New York for the United Nations General Assembly will send the message that Assad can stay.</p>
<p>But the situation is not only an alarm bell to the U.S., besides challenging the U.S., the interference of Russia in Syria and Iraq what is now a recognized fighting force will provoke the Muslim world, and bring back memories of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.</p>

Norway Pays Brazil $1bn For Slowing Amazon Deforestation

<p>As part of an agreement called The Amazon Fund, the Scandinavian country promised to pay Brazil $1bn between 2008 and 2015, in exchange for its commitment to slow down <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/heres-how-starbucks-is-destroying-the-rainforest-and-what-you-can-do-to-help/" target="_blank">deforestation</a>. The Amazon Fund is administered by the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/250000-people-forcibly-removed-from-their-homes-for-world-cup-in-brazil/" target="_blank">Brazilian</a> Development Bank BNDES, which uses the money to pay for sustainable and innovative ways to develop the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/gab_gallery/uncontacted-amazon-tribe-first-ever-aerial-footage/" target="_blank">Amazon</a> region.</p>
<p>The UN Secretary General said that the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/brazil-government-says-amazon-is-improving-vastly-but-independent-researchers-disagree/" target="_blank">Amazon</a> fund was “an outstanding example of the kind of international collaboration we need to ensure the future sustainability of the planet”.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/how-these-brazilian-students-learn-english-is-amazing/" target="_blank">Brazil</a> vowed to cut the rate of deforestation by 75 percent over the past seven years, and has achieved its goal. Between 1996 and 2005, <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/brazilian-artist-is-transforming-womens-scars-from-abuse-into-art-for-free/" target="_blank">Brazil</a> cut down 20,500 km squared, an area the size of Clark County in Nevada, or the entire state of Israel. By the year from August 2013 to July 2014, that had fallen to 4,800km squared. In 2012 the rate of deforestation fell to its lowest in 24 years.</p>
<p>But activists say the rate of <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/watch-over-500000-ants-joined-in-protest-against-deforestation/" target="_blank">deforestation</a> is not slowing down enough, and that Brazil- whose policy of <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/the-world-must-know-what-is-happening-here-the-story-behind-those-shocking-viral-images/" target="_blank">evicting</a> native <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/indigenous-protesters-occupy-oil-field-in-the-amazon-and-threaten-to-shut-it-down-if-they-are-ignored/" target="_blank">people</a> from their ancestral land has proven very <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/the-militarization-of-conservation-and-the-dark-side-of-the-wwf-exposed/" target="_blank">controversial</a>– should be doing much more to prevent the loss of diverse habitats. In July 2014, <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/brazilian-wasp-venom-found-to-kill-cancer-cells-without-harming-healthy-cells/" target="_blank">Brazilian</a> President Dilma Rousseff made it easier for logging companies to clear the rainforest, resulting in a <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/worlds-oldest-tree-accidentally-cut-down-by-loggers-in-amazon/" target="_blank">deforestation</a> spike: 402km squared was cleared in September last year alone.</p>
<p>Norway has put an impressive $670 million into the Amazon Fund so far and is one of the most charitable nations on the planet, with over 1% of its GDP spent on international aid. The country also has a deal with Indonesia, offering it the same $180m installments in exchange for a vow from the country to protect its tropical <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/mind-blowing-what-the-people-of-the-amazon-know-that-you-dont/" target="_blank">rainforests</a>. However, it warned the Indonesian government earlier this year that its progress in reforming its forestry sector will <em>not</em> be sufficient to meet its pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 26% in 2020.</p>
<p>Norwegian environment minister Baard Vegar Solhjell announced on Monday that the government would make the $100m payment to Brazil before the global <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/this-15-year-old-is-leading-a-global-revolution-for-climate-change/" target="_blank">climate</a> summit in December, praising the country’s conservation work: “These efforts have tremendous positive effects for biodiversity, the livelihoods of local communities and indigenous peoples, and local and global rainfall patterns,” he <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/06/us-norway-brazil-aid-idUSBRE8B50WA20121206" target="_blank">sai</a>d. “The importance of what Brazil has achieved on deforestation over the last few years can hardly be overestimated.”</p>

As Tim Donaghy, a senior research specialist with Greenpeace <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jun/14/stranded-whales-ocean-navy-sonars" target="_blank">told</a> the Guardian in June last year,  “a deaf whale is a dead whale.” Take into account that many injured and dead <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/how-whales-change-climate/" target="_blank">whales</a> and <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/india-declares-dolphins-non-human-persons-dolphin-shows-banned/" target="_blank">dolphins</a> do not end up stranded on a beach, and it’s easy to see how difficult it is to accurately assess how many marine animals are affected by sonar use in our oceans.</p>
<p>In March, a US district court in <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/hawaii-just-banned-plastic-bags-at-grocery-checkouts/" target="_blank">Hawaii</a> found that the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) improperly gave approval to the navy’s use of sonar in the Pacific, a cause for celebration for environmental groups. This month, a federal court went one step further by ruling that when the US Navy’s current contract expires in 2018, certain regulations to its activities will apply:</p>
<ul>
<li>The deal will prohibit the navy “from using mid-frequency active sonar for training and testing activities in important habitat for beaked whales between Santa Catalina Island and San Nicolas Island” and</li>
<li>“from using mid-frequency active sonar for training and testing activities in important habitat for blue whales feeding near San Diego”.</li>
<li>It also requires that “surface vessels must use ‘extreme caution’ and travel at a safe speed to minimize the risk of ship strikes in blue whale feeding habitat and migratory corridors for blue, fin, and gray whales.”</li>
<li>Special prohibitions already in place in <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/hawaiian-natives-fight-to-keep-telescope-off-sacred-mountain/" target="_blank">Hawaii</a> restrict speed in order to protect humpback whales.</li>

Native communities will be some of the most hard hit by the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=pipeline" target="_blank">pipeline</a>, as the oil companies are planning on building directly through their ancestral homelands, the land that was promised to them through very early government treaties.</p>
<p>Amanda Lickers of the Seneca-Haudenosaunee community was one of the women who joined the protest. She told reporters on the scene that she was determined to protect her homeland and the environment surrounding it.</p>
<p><em>“What we want TransCanada to understand is that no means no. This is Kanien’ke, this is Mohawk Land, and we are tired of occupation, we are tired of environmental disaster. This is our land and we are going to protect it,</em>” she said.</p>
<p>During the protest, four <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=native" target="_blank">native</a> women held a banner that said <em>“No consent, no pipelines”</em> as the meeting was being canceled.</p>

<p>The police were called to the protest, but luckily no arrests were made.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/sioux-tribal-president-declares-keystone-xl-pipeline-an-act-of-war/" target="_blank">in Rosebud South Dakota</a>, the Rosebud Sioux Tribal President made an official announcement, stating that the Rosebud Sioux Tribe considers the laying of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline through their lands to be an “act of war.”</p>
<p>One of the most effective propaganda campaigns that the government has going for them is the idea that it is somehow their job to protect the environment.</p>
<p>This is said to be accomplished by punishing those who damage the environment. However, situations like this give a much clearer view of reality.</p>
<p>In this case and in most others, individual private property holders are actually personally invested in the land, thus they have a greater incentive to actually take care of the property and be conscious of the environment.</p>
<p>With the Tar Sands pipeline, we see how the government is actually taking property away from people who would treat it well and then selling it to people who will undoubtedly disrespect it.</p>
<p>Without the strong arm of the government to expropriate the property, the companies that are building this pipeline would be forced to directly negotiate with these property holders themselves or offer them fair deals in return for their property.</p>
<p>Beings that most of these people have so much personal history invested in this land, the majority of them would refuse to negotiate, making the construction of this pipeline completely impossible.</p>
<p>Sadly, politicians have no problem negotiating with other people’s property, so they can be lobbied to use the guns of government to expropriate land on behalf of a third party, making projects that no one wants in their “own back yard” a reality.</p>

<p>High court enforcement officers used sledgehammers and battering rams in a bid to evict more than 100 people from a north London housing estate awaiting redevelopment.</p>
<p>The confrontation began shortly before 8am on Wednesday and comes six months after the former Ministry of Defence housing estate, Sweets Way in Whetstone, was occupied by housing activists protesting against the eviction of families, many of whom were previously homeless.</p>
<p>Police dog teams, ambulances and fire engines were on standby as several people who have been occupying the homes since March climbed on to the roofs and refused to come down.</p>
<p>Those evicted described how enforcement officers smashed down their doors without warning and gave them 10 minutes to leave. They said there were violent confrontations with some people being carried out, including one man in his seventies. One person reportedly suffered a cut face after a window was smashed in during the evictions.</p>
<p>“We were scared,” said Carolina, 33, who is six months pregnant and said she now had nowhere to sleep. “They pushed in the doors and about eight of the officers came into each house. It is just unfair. Winter is coming and the number of homeless is growing.”</p>
<p>The squatters’ belongings – including Hula Hoops, curtains, washing-up bowls and bicycles – were piled up in the roads as enforcement officers brought a cherry-picker into the area to try to remove protesters from the roofs.</p>
<p>Wednesday’s action against squatters and housing protesters is the final act of a long-running dispute over the estate, which came to national attention when comedian Russell Brand joined a sleepover there.</p>

<p>The case of the final tenant, Mostafa Aliverdipour, who is severely disabled and refusing to leave because he believes the replacement home he is being offered is not appropriate, is expected to be heard in court on Wednesday afternoon.</p>
<p>Another couple, Jay and Bibi, who are in their early 20s and had squatted in the properties for a couple of months, told the Guardian they were homeless again as they left the estate with a duvet and a few bags of belongings.</p>
<p>“We are going to get a train into central London and try and sleep under a building,” Jay said. “Some people have places to stay, but we are homeless. We are going to sleep rough. It is just part of this corrupt system. When I was working, if I had been paid double, worked twice as many hours and saved everything, I would only have been able to afford a £100,000 house and what can you buy for that?”</p>
<p>He added he had been able to furnish the house with carpets and furniture as if it was his own.</p>

<p>There were skirmishes between protesters and police, while enforcement officers and squatters played cat-and-mouse as they tried to intercept bags of food and drink being thrown up to squatters on the roofs.</p>
<p>Annington Homes, the property company controlled by Guy Hands’ Terra Firma investment operation, is planning to replace the 142-home estate with 288 new dwellings. It said 20% of the new homes – at least 59 – will be classed as affordable.</p>
<p>“Annington very much supports the argument for more homes, both in London and elsewhere although there is a need for development to achieve this,” a spokesman said. “It is regrettable when homes need to be demolished, but Annington’s decision to develop will see an increase in the number of homes by 100%.</p>
<p>“Today’s action relates to the mass eviction of over 50 properties currently illegally occupied by squatters. Two high court writs of possession have been issued for high court enforcement officers working in conjunction with police to clear the illegal occupation of the estate.”</p>

<p>Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio on Tuesday joined more than 400 institutions and 2,000 individuals who have promised to divest from fossil fuels, as <a href="http://www.arabellaadvisors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Measuring-the-Growth-of-the-Divestment-Movement.pdf" rel="nofollow">new research showed</a> they hold total assets of $2.6 trillion.</p>
<p>The report by investment experts reveals the movement to take money out of fossil fuels like oil, coal and gas has grown 50-fold in one year. At the same time, more capital is flowing into renewable energy and other solutions to climate change problems, it said.</p>
<p>"Climate change is severely impacting the health of our planet and all of its inhabitants," said DiCaprio, announcing his promise to divest on behalf of himself and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which supports conservation projects around the world. "We must transition to a clean energy economy that does not rely on fossil fuels, the main driver of this global problem," the celebrity environmentalist added in a statement.</p>
<p>Local governments and investors from 43 countries have committed to stop supporting fossil fuels, including municipalities, pension funds, medical associations and churches, the coalition backing the movement said. The report, launched in New York by investment consultancy Arabella Advisors, did not specify how much of the $2.6 trillion in overall assets represented by those that have pledged to divest was invested in fossil fuels.</p>
<p>Thomas Van Dyck, managing director of SRI Wealth Management Group, said the research showed a growing number of investors wanted to reduce their carbon risk and switch their money into clean-growth industries. "That underscores what I see every day as a financial advisor – that the demand for fossil-free investment products is increasing," he said in a statement.</p>

<p><strong>Catching Fire</strong></p>
<p>In the past year, activists have targeted the shareholders and creditors of fossil fuel companies and their corporate and social partners, while ramping up pressure on universities and religious institutions to stop investing in those firms.</p>
<p>The tactics are getting results – particularly in the United States, Britain and some Scandinavian countries, campaigners say.</p>
<p>"If these numbers tell us anything, it's that the divestment movement is catching fire," said May Boeve, executive director of 350.org, an online climate action group. She said the expansion of the movement should send a clear message to world leaders ahead of U.N. talks in Paris, where they are due to agree on a new global deal to tackle climate change in December.</p>
<p>"It's time for them to follow suit, and divest our governments from fossil fuel companies too," Boeve added.</p>
<p>Divestment strategies differ across organizations, the coalition noted. Some are withdrawing their money from all fossil fuel companies, while others are beginning with firms involved in coal or tar sands.</p>
<p>A papal pronouncement issued by Pope Francis in June demanding swift action to save the planet from environmental ruin has influenced religious institutions, experts say.</p>
<p>"The pace of fossil fuel divestment within faith communities worldwide, combined with the growing commitment to investing in clean energy, particularly for the world's poor, show that the world's spiritual and moral leaders grasp the urgency of the climate crisis and are ready to act," said Rev. Fletcher Harper, executive director of GreenFaith, a U.S.-based interfaith coalition for the environment.</p>

<p><strong>MEANWHILE, Rebecca Leber <a href="http://www.newrepublic.com/article/122898/president-hillary-clinton-could-put-obamas-climate-record-shame" rel="nofollow">reports in The New Republic</a> that Hillary Clinton's announcement Tuesday that she no longer supports the Keystone XL pipeline comes as a huge win for the climate movement:</strong></p>
<p>On Tuesday afternoon, with the nation’s attention turned to Pope Francis making landfall in Washington, D.C., Hillary Clinton gave an Iowa town hall the answer environmentalists have long waited to hear from her on the Keystone XL pipeline. “I oppose it,” she said.</p>
<p>For years, the former secretary of state has insisted she could not come forward with her personal opinion on the project, using an assortment of excuses to explain that she would not comment while the State Department’s review of the project – which has stretched on endlessly, and conveniently for Clinton, since 2009 – was still in progress.</p>
<p>That's recently changed, as the pressure for her to come forward has only grown with Senator Bernie Sanders’ rise in the polls. Last week, she warned, "I'm putting the White House on notice” on Keystone; on Tuesday, she handed Keystone activists a clear win, yet still made clear that she sees the project as one giant nuisance.</p>
<p>"I think it is imperative that we look at the Keystone Pipeline as what I believe it is, a distraction from important work we have to do on climate change,” Clinton said. “And unfortunately from my perspective, one that interferes with our ability to move forward with all other issues."</p>
<p>Ignore Clinton’s grudging comments. This is a huge political victory for environmentalists. It reflects how significantly the politics around Keystone have shifted in a few years – after all, Clinton herself said she was "inclined" to approve it in 2010. Now, the expectation is Obama too will reject it. It also means the leading Democratic candidate has adopted not one, but two of green activists' key issues. Last month, Clinton said she opposes drilling in the U.S. Arctic, in a significant break from the Obama administration. "It's not worth the risk of drilling," she tweeted.</p>
<p>Her reasons for championing the policies that are near and dear to environmentalists probably have more to do with fending off Sanders’ unexpected success early in the campaign cycle. Sanders has long opposed Keystone, and as the White House decision has lingered, Clinton was increasingly painted into a corner. She could dodge endless questions about her position on Keystone, or she could finally silence critics who say Sanders is a better climate ally than Clinton.</p>
<p>But now, in a dramatic shift in perception, Clinton herself has become an ally applying pressure to the administration. Today grassroots groups praised Clinton for shaking her sometimes-aloof reputation on climate change. “Hillary is now standing with us to ask President Obama to reject the pipeline once and for all," said one anti-Keystone activist, Bold Nebraska Director Jane Kleeb, adding, "We are proud Sec. Clinton stood up for clean water today."</p>
<p>The question now: How much further will she go? Was the Keystone announcement politics or principle? The early primary season offers progressive activists the best chance they'll have to push Clinton to stake out aggressive climate policies, and they know it. What they hope to see next is a bold stand against federal policies that promote fossil fuel development. “I think logically the train of thought would lead anyone to say, we have to leave carbon in the ground,” Bill McKibben, a climate activist and journalist who's led the Keystone opposition, told me in an email after Clinton finally spoke out.</p>
<p>If Clinton continues to break with Obama on the areas where he remains weakest on the environment, she could outpace his accomplishments in office if elected president. The key is whether she continues to focus on policies that discourage the production of fossil fuels, like mining and drilling on public lands. The federal government leases 67 million acres to the fossil fuel industry, and Obama has approved leases for a quarter of them. “And the president of the U.S. actually has control over a lot of ground, without even having to ask anyone in Congress.” Clinton has clearly decided to go after the climate vote, but she will have to do more to fully earn it.</p>
