Moscow: US Plans to Accuse Russia of Using Nukes in Ukraine

<p><strong>Russia has accused the US of planning to use weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Ukraine in order to frame Moscow. The US is preparing <em>“a provocation aimed at accusing the Russian armed forces of using chemical, biological, or tactical nuclear weapons,”</em> Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of the Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Force, said on Saturday.</strong></p>
<p>According to Kirillov, the supposed plans include<em> “three scenarios.”</em> The most probable scenario, he said, is a false-flag attack on civilians, or <em>“an act of sabotage on Ukrainians sites, which were involved in the development of the components of weapons of mass destruction.”</em></p>
<p>Kirillov claimed that the potential targets are the Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Station, which has been controlled by Russia since early March, and the site of a former chemical plant in Kamenskoye in eastern Ukraine.</p>
<p>RBC Ukraina media outlet reported last year that the plant in Kamenskoye was used for uranium enrichment in Soviet times and still contains nuclear waste. Kirillov said the Russian Defense Ministry obtained a document which shows that the facilities there are in critical condition.</p>
<p>The second option mentioned by Kirillov involves <em>“discreetly”</em> using WMDs <em>“in small quantities.”</em> He claimed that the Pentagon initially planned to deploy WMDs in Azovstal, a large steel mill in the Azov Sea port of Mariupol.</p>
<p>While Russian and Donbass troops largely control the city, a handful of Ukrainian troops and civilians remain holed up in the mill, mostly underground. On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called off the assault on the mill, opting for a blockade instead. </p>
<p>The last option is what Kirillov called <em>“an open use of WMDs on the battlefield.”</em> He said it could be used in the Donbass towns of Slavyansk and Kramatorsk, which are close to the frontline and controlled by Kiev. Kirillov called this scenario <em>“the least probable.”</em></p>
<p>The general said that last month, Russian intelligence services found three spray drones in Ukraine’s southern Kherson Region. He argued that the UAVs could be used to spray <em>“biological agents and toxic chemicals.”</em> Kirillov claimed that vials with an unknown substance were airdropped on Thursday on Russian troops. The vials are being studied by the Defense Ministry, he said.</p>

<p>Kirillov noted that Russia disposed of all of its chemical weapons in 2017, while the Soviet Union scrapped its biological weapons program in 1972.</p>
<p>Moscow previously claimed that Ukraine had maintained US-funded biological weapons research programs, citing what it said were documents from the country’s several laboratories. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly denied these allegations, saying the labs were only conducting <em>“ordinary scientific research.”</em></p>
<p>In an interview aired on CNN last week, Zelensky said <em>“all countries have to be worried”</em> that Russia might use nuclear or chemical weapons.</p>
<p>Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN’s top disarmament official, said last month that the organization was <em>“not aware”</em> of any biological weapons programs in Ukraine.</p>
<p>In March, US diplomat Victoria Nuland testified before the Senate that the US was working with Kiev <em>“to ensure that the materials of biological research do not fall into the hands of Russian forces.”</em> The State Department, however, said the allegations of the US and Kiev conducting <em>“chemical and biological weapons activities in Ukraine”</em> were <em>“outright lies.”</em></p>
<p>Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.</p>
<p>The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.</p>

New York Democrats Aim To Tax Ammo To Fund Anti-Gun Research

<p><strong>Did you know that on a Federal, State, and Local level, Democratic lawmakers are pushing legislation to fund gun-control research?</strong></p>
<p>Imagine walking into your local gun shop, buying a gun, ammo to practice with, and unknowingly funding research used by groups actively working to disarm law-abiding citizens nationwide. This is the reality of new proposed ammo and firearms taxation throughout the United States.</p>

<p>Our newest example is New York Senate Bill <a href="https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2021/S8415">S8415</a>, which would add an arbitrary 5-cent tax per round of ammunition larger than .22 Caliber. Rounds smaller than .22 Caliber would be subject to a 2-cent tax per round. According to the bill, the tax revenue would go to the state’s Gun Violence Research Fund.</p>
<p>What is the Gun Violence Research Fund, you may ask? According to <a href="https://nyassembly.gov/Press/?sec=story&story=97495">Carl E. Heastie</a>, speaker of the New York State Assembly, the Gun Violence Research Fund is meant to “Fund critical research into the root causes of gun violence, and help us address and solve those problems in our state and in our communities.”</p>
<p>While this messaging doesn’t explicitly state that the government will use the research to pass anti-gun bills, <strong>it’s worth noting that </strong><a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-signs-legislative-package-fight-gun-violence-crisis-though-creation-firearm">anti-gun groups did support </a><strong>the creation of this fund</strong>.</p>
<p>Anti-Gun groups are some of the most prominent supporters of “research” into gun violence and funding that research through less than honest means, such as proclaiming gun violence as a “<a href="https://giffords.org/action/gun-violence-public-health-crisis/">public health crisis</a>.” Of course, if the government were to designate it that way, government health agencies like NIH and the CDC could start <a href="https://obssr.od.nih.gov/news-and-events/news/director-voice/nih-awards-10-grants-addressing-firearm-violence-prevention">funding</a> this “<a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/political/cdc-director-restart-gun-research-amid-spate-mass-shootings">research</a>.”</p>
<p>Many in the corporate media have speculated that this may be their “<a href="https://mcbath.house.gov/2021/3/new-york-times-can-new-gun-violence-research-find-a-path-around-the-political-stalemate">golden ticket</a>” to passing gun control through the legislative process instead of using their favorite method, <a href="https://www.iwf.org/2021/01/29/rule-by-executive-fiat-marks-the-biden-administrations-first-days/">executive fiat</a>.</p>

RAND Corporation has confirmed this in <a href="https://www.rand.org/research/gun-policy/analysis/essays/firearm-and-ammunition-taxes.html">a study</a> on ammo & gun taxes that found “little empirical evidence to indicate how taxation would influence firearm-related outcomes, such as violent crime, suicide, self-defense, or sales of firearms.”</p>
<p>Still, legislators seem determined to “tax” away Americans’ right to own firearms or punish gun owners who can afford to pay the tax. The New York proposed law is just one example of that. California has adopted a similar method, with localities like San Jose implementing a mandatory <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/san-jose-tax-gun-owners-city-confiscate-firearms-noncompliance">tax on gun ownership</a>. <strong>Those who are found in non-compliance will have their firearms confiscated.</strong></p>
<p>These methods of gun control target the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/07/16/biden-gun-control-poverty/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">most vulnerable</a> in our society. While taxes may not affect those who can afford to pay, those in lower-income brackets can essentially be “too poor” to enjoy their right to own a firearm.</p>
<p>Actions such as taxing and funding opposition research are small pieces of a larger picture. With the regulatory agency for firearms politically <a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/political/puzzle-pieces-all-laid-out-how-atf-has-plan-classify-semi-automatic-rifles-machine-guns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weaponized</a> against the very items they seek to regulate and many in government openly hostile towards the right to bear arms, gun owners must work to change the minds of those around them. Trump Touts ‘Good’ Ties With McCarthy as Leaked Call Reveals House GOP Leader Wanted Him to Resign

<p><strong>Earlier, a released tape of a telephone call obtained by The New York Times that allegedly took place between Kevin McCarthy and House Republican Liz Cheney in the wake of the US Capitol riot on 6 January 2021 suggests that the House GOP leader planned to advise then-President Donald Trump to resign despite previously denying such reports.</strong></p>
<p>Ex-President <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://sputniknews.com/20220422/trump-mccarthy-hold-call-on-new-audio-about-ex-potus-6-jan-resignation-claims---reports-1094974923.html" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> insists he enjoyed a good relationship with Kevin McCarthy, after a recording emerged of the House minority leader telling other top GOP lawmakers in a call on 10 January that he would advise Trump to resign, days after the riot at the US Capitol on 6 January 2021.</p>
<p>“He made a call. I heard the call. I didn’t like the call”, Trump said, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/mccarthy-said-he-would-advise-trump-to-resign-after-jan-6-riot-tape-shows-11650637401" target="_blank">interviewed</a> on Friday by The Wall Street Journal at his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago.</p>
<p>However, Donald Trump claimed the Republican never ultimately advised him to quit. According to the 45th POTUS, the California politician changed his stance “when he found out the facts”, and was then able to fully support him.</p>
<p>“But almost immediately as you know, because he came here and we took a picture right there—you know, the support was very strong”, said Trump, pointing out exactly where McCarthy took a photo with him at the time.</p>
<p>“I think it’s all a big compliment, frankly. They realized they were wrong and supported me”, Trump said, referring to McCarthy and other Republicans who lambasted him after the Capitol events.</p>
<p>On 6 January, protesters breached the US Capitol building following a rally held by Donald Trump outside the White House, at which he alleged that Democrat Joe Biden won the November 2020 election fraudulently.</p>
<p>The <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://sputniknews.com/20220422/three-more-men-plead-guilty-to-assault-during-january-6-capitol-riot-doj-says-1094978783.html" target="_blank">attack on the Capitol</a> disrupted a joint session of Congress that was counting electoral votes to formalise Biden’s victory. At the time, while the rioters gained entry to the national legislature, they failed in their ultimate goal of overturning the results of the vote. Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died in the wake of the events.</p>

<p>With the Democrats insisting that Trump’s claims of voter fraud incited the so-called insurrection, the ex-POTUS, who vehemently rejected the accusations, was later impeached by the US House of Representatives.</p>
<p>He was subsequently acquitted by the US Senate.</p>
<p>When pressed in the WSJ interview whether he still supported McCarthy as speaker, Trump said:</p>
<p>“Well I don’t know of anybody else that’s running and I think that I’ve had actually a very good relationship with him. I like him. And other than that brief period of time, I suspect he likes me quite a bit”.</p>
<h3>Leaked Audio on Capitol Events</h3>
<p>The audio of an alleged call between <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://sputniknews.com/20220422/mccarthys-future-in-question-as-colleagues-blast-gop-leader-over-audio-on-trump-resignation-1094981699.html" target="_blank">McCarthy</a> and House Republican Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.) in the aftermath of the 6 January 2021 events was aired by The New York Times on Thursday. The tape was obtained by the outlet’s journalists, Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns, who wrote the upcoming book “This Will Not Pass”.</p>
<p>The reported telephone call suggests that McCarthy intended to advise then-President Donald Trump to resign, despite previously denying such reports.</p>
<p>In the audio, referencing the impeachment proceedings triggered by the Democrats against Trump, a voice resembling McCarthy’s said:</p>
<p>“We know it’ll pass the House. I think there’s a chance it’ll pass the Senate.…The only discussion I would have with [Mr Trump] is that I think this will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign”.</p>
<p>In their upcoming book promising to shed light on the events of 6 January 2021 and set for release on 3 May, the journalists claim that GOP leaders in both chambers of the Congress blamed Trump at the time and considered urging him to resign.</p>
<p>There is no clarity on whether the House Republican leader actually engaged in such a discussion with Trump and if he advised the president to step down.</p>
<p>On 13 January 2021, three days after the alleged call, Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump. Kevin McCarthy, while voting against impeachment, stated in the House that Trump bore “responsibility for Wednesday’s attack by mob rioters”.</p>
<p>A spokesperson for Liz Cheney denied she recorded or leaked the tape released on Thursday.</p>
<p>In the WSJ interview, Donald Trump also denied ever accepting responsibility for the events of 6 January. This would appear to contradict Kevin McCarthy’s claim to House GOP members in another call, ostensibly made on 11 January 2021. According to audio from that call, similarly obtained by New York Times reporters and released by CNN on 22 April, McCarthy said he had asked Trump whether he bore responsibility for what happened.</p>
<p>“He told me he does have some responsibility for what happened”, a voice appearing to resemble that of McCarthy can be heard saying.</p>
<p>“No, that’s false. I never claimed responsibility”, Donald. Trump said in the interview for The Wall Street Journal.</p>
<p>The publication of the tape came after Kevin McCarthy <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://sputniknews.com/20220421/kevin-mccarthy-rips-totally-false-claims-he-wanted-to-push-trump-to-resign-after-6-january-1094951248.html" target="_blank">dismissed</a> the New York Times journalists’ reports about his actions in the wake of the US Capitol riot as “totally false and wrong”.</p>
<p>The recording has also triggered speculation regarding whether it might threaten the Republican’s ambition to become speaker if the GOP wins control of the House in November’s midterm elections.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, McCarthy and Trump spoke on Thursday night, and the ex-president did not appear to be “angry”, according to sources cited by the outlet. Kevin McCarthy’s aides had reportedly been making calls to GOP House members since Thursday night, seeking to reassure them that the California Republican remains on good terms with Trump. It was also added that the two men planned to meet early in May as part of a regularly scheduled meeting.</p>
<p>If the GOP secures a House majority in November’s midterms, Kevin McCarthy would need the support of 218 Republicans in a House floor vote to become speaker.</p>

<p>Governments around the world, comprised of many adherents to the internationalist vision of a “new” world order, now seek to use the war in Ukraine as their latest cabal to divert global resources to their next great cause. These well-manicured, effete, and sometimes partially coherent leaders threaten and coerce unified action against what they have deemed to be the next object of their obsession to advance their vision: Russia. These elites deal in an ethereal strategic realm of grand visions based on endless amounts of financing from central banks and perhaps a future reliance on cannon fodder provided by the masses (read: working class), who are on the hook to pay the bills rung up by their social betters. Jeff Deist in his <a href="https://mises.org/wire/wrong-elites">most recent article</a> captures the spirit of these elites very well.</p>
<p>The ethereal strategic realm is the realm of the military generals and foreign ministry “experts,” who only see the upside to enormous increases is military spending and the associated foreign adventures to advance their goals. They in fact have no understanding of the visceral tactical costs of their vision, the economics of conflict, the financial damage caused to the American economy in particular, or the burdens their lofty visions place on generations to come. Along with numerous members of Congress, members of the executive bureaucracy, defense contractors, lobbyists, and their counterparts throughout the world, these people deal in a fantasy world where they only reap the rewards of the endless cycle of conflict begun on an industrial scale in the twentieth century.</p>
<p>It is a dream world, yet it has given us a series of nightmarish treaties and security arrangements, which all American men, women, children, and those yet to be born are obligated to support in perpetuity. Many hardworking Americans may be unaware that they are on the hook to maintain, financially, and with their lives if their government decides so, these arrangements, which came as a result of the internationalist desire to establish Western dominance during and after the Cold War.</p>
<p>The list of <a href="https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/TIF-2020-Full-website-view.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">treaties in force</a> maintained by the US Department of State is truly mind boggling. Among the most prominent of the security arrangements are the <a href="https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/official_texts_17120.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Atlantic Treaty</a>, the <a href="https://www.usfk.mil/Portals/105/Documents/SOFA/H_Mutual%20Defense%20Treaty_1953.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States and the Republic of Korea</a>, and the <a href="https://www.mofa.go.jp/region/n-america/us/q&a/ref/1.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and the United States of America</a>.</p>
<p>There are others to be sure, all trigger points for future conflict. However, these are the big three treaties that are backed by the enormous resources of the United States and construct a web of entangling relations that provide the opportunity for rapid, significant miscalculation and entry into a large kinetic war. Any mere suggestion that these treaties are overly burdensome relics of the past of which the vast majority of Americans are completely unaware is met with accusations of ignorance and isolationism toward those who choose to consider the costs of these arrangements.</p>
<p>The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (<a href="https://www.nato.int/nato-welcome/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NATO</a>) is an historic anachronism. Created in 1949 as a buffer against Soviet expansion into Western Europe, NATO ceased to serve any purpose when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. The organization metastasized in the post-Soviet era, when it not only lost an opportunity to show good will toward its former adversary, but took advantage of the momentary weakness of Russia to expand, welcome in former Soviet client states, and pose legitimate security concerns for the Russian leadership. As <a href="http://ronpaulinstitute.org/archives/featured-articles/2022/april/06/the-warfare-state-s-infinitely-mendacious-echo-chamber/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">David Stockman</a> explains:</p>

<p>A vast amount of money and resources were wasted in not accepting a hard-won peace but rather maintaining a war footing and exploiting the new potential for NATO to act as a force to expand Western European hegemony, right to Russia’s front door. This, of course, was largely paid for by the United States. Rather than disappearing as a relic of the Cold War, NATO continues today, to be an organization which very well might drag the United States into yet another European war. In Ukraine, much like in Afghanistan, NATO is demonstrating that a state need not be a member to find comfort in NATO’s protective bosom.</p>
<p>Another relic of the Cold War is the US–Republic of Korea alliance. There are nearly thirty thousand US troops stationed in the Republic of Korea, ostensibly there to defend the alliance. In reality, they are there to act as a tripwire to involve the United States in any conflict that may break out on the peninsula. 2023 will mark the seventy-year anniversary of the Korean War armistice. Despite the fact that the Republic of Korea has the <a href="https://www.worldometers.info/gdp/gdp-by-country/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">twelfth-largest GDP</a> (gross domestic product) on earth and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is listed as 130th (though there really are no <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_North_Korea" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accurate data</a> to determine the size of its economy), the Republic of Korea has required an open-ended treaty commitment from the United States that has cost billions of US taxpayer dollars and <a href="https://www.va.gov/opa/publications/factsheets/fs_americas_wars.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">54,296</a> dead troops during the Korean War (1950–53). Although 1,789,000 US troops served in theater during the Korean War, and today’s commitment of under 30,000 troops will be argued by alliance defenders to be a paltry sum, at least this potential region of conflict begs the question: When can it end? Will the United States have troops in the Republic of Korea for a hundred years? A hundred more years? Forever? Will the US debt-to-GDP ratio have anything to do with that decision? Is the demilitarized zone more important to Americans than the US-Mexico border? Apparently, it is to the policy makers and the self-appointed deep-state “experts” who continue to support this forever alliance.</p>
<p>Similarly, the US-Japan alliance, created during the Cold War and signed into treaty in 1960 specifically to address Japanese disarmament after World War II and the Soviet presence in the Far East, has lived beyond its usefulness. It certainly has outlived the singular reason for its existence, the former Soviet Union. Japan, which was able to build its <a href="https://www.worldometers.info/gdp/gdp-by-country/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enormous economy</a> because it relied on the American security blanket during the Cold War, found it to its advantage to continue this security arrangement beyond the existence of the Soviet menace so it could substantially defray the costs of its own security. However, this has not only left the responsibility and financial burden of defending Japan to the United States, but it has done so with the very great potential of drawing the United States into confrontations with the new, scary international menace, the People’s Republic of China.</p>
<p>Recently, Japan has been keener on spending more for its own defense and increasing security cooperation with the United States. That mises the point. The United States, a country with a national debt of nearly <a href="https://www.usdebtclock.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$31 trillion</a>, pays billions of dollars a year to station a vast array of military forces in Japan, ready to enforce the security guarantees within the mutual defense pact. Of course, there is nothing mutual about the treaty, which calls for US security guarantees for Japan, but no such reciprocation from Japan. American sons and daughters may be required to die for the <a href="https://www.mofa.go.jp/a_o/c_m1/senkaku/page1we_000010.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Senkaku Islands</a> one day, but not one Japanese is on the hook to come to the defense of any US interest anywhere. In fact, the Japanese are prevented from doing so by <a href="https://japan.kantei.go.jp/constitution_and_government_of_japan/constitution_e.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">article 9</a> of their own constitution.</p>
<p>Who pays the actual price for these security arrangements? The American taxpayers and workers. They are the ones who will pay the price in blood for these agreements created by the internationalist elites of a former era. The realm of the working class is visceral and tactical. It is the realm of real human beings, mostly poor, who throughout history have filled the mass graves of foreign battlefields. It is the realm of those who are always made to clean up the messes created by those elites luxuriating in the ethereal strategic realm. The visceral tactical realm is the realm of financial ruin, military casualties, the destruction of families and societies.</p>
<p>Americans have been spoiled in that their manifest strategic blunders have not yet resulted in societal collapse. The disasters of the Vietnam War, Iraq, Afghanistan have not translated to widespread negative outcomes for American society, with the exception that these misadventures have added substantially to the national debt and caused great misery among working-class people, who are the ones footing the financial bill and paying the price in blood. How long will the American public accept the idea that they are marionettes controlled by elite hands that have bungled every major crisis in American history? When will Americans demand of their government that they dispense with promises of security to foreign nations that have taken advantage of American generosity for far too long and instead focus on the other, domestic disasters awaiting American society?</p>
<p>The time to end these security obligations invented by political elites is now, while we can control the process of what comes after them. If we wait much longer, these alliances will either collapse under the stresses of failing fiat currencies or the United States will be dragged into a war most of its citizens do not want and which may cause significant, long-lasting damage to American society. Let’s not leave another mess for the working man to clean up.</p>

<p><strong>Will the mainstream Right rethink federal law enforcement?</strong></p>
<p>The past six years have witnessed America enter a bizarro world state where Democrats are the prowar, prosurveillance state party, while Republicans have looked rather restrained in comparison.</p>
<p>For example, Dinesh D’Souza floored onlookers in 2021 by calling for the abolition of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in one of his op-eds. In an article titled “Abolish the FBI,” D’Souza <a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/abolish-the-fbi_3799023.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">argued</a> that the federal law enforcement agency has been “corrupted from the top,” its deterioration starting in the Obama administration and continuing apace during the Trump administration. D’Souza also contrasted the FBI’s treatment of Antifa and Black Lives Matter with that of the January 6 demonstrators. The FBI vigorously hunted the latter group while treating the aforementioned leftist groups with kid gloves.</p>
<p>In fairness, D’Souza’s belief that the FBI has been recently politicized is an inaccurate depiction of the institution’s controversial history. The FBI’s <a href="https://mises.org/wire/abolish-fbi">involvement</a> in arresting and snooping on antiwar protesters during <a href="https://mises.org/wire/fbis-forgotten-criminal-record">World War I</a> and the <a href="https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/spying-protesters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vietnam War</a>, coupled with the controversial sieges it carried out at <a href="https://mises.org/wire/my-time-fbi">Ruby Ridge</a> and <a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/civil-rights/383407-bitter-lessons-25-years-after-waco-texas-siege/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Waco</a>, showcases a longstanding track record of malfeasances that conservatives have largely overlooked. Pace D’Souza and fellow conservative commentators like <a href="https://mises.org/power-market/waco-25-years-later">Sean Hannity</a>, the FBI’s politicization is not a recent development; it’s been a feature since its very foundation.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, it’s still a significant improvement to see D’Souza—a major <a href="https://www.lewrockwell.com/lrc-blog/dinesh-dsouza-vs-ron-paul/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">booster of neoconservative programs</a>—push a proposal (FBI abolition) that has never been on the conservative menu.</p>
<p>But there is still significant institutional inertia in DC and the conservative movement is ideologically committed to <a href="https://twitter.com/michaelmalice/status/876218352804524036?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">playing the role</a> of progressivism driving the speed limit. All told, these factors make one justifiably skeptical of sentiments coming from the likes of D’Souza.</p>
<p>The aftermath of the January 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol provided a sneak preview of what’s in store for anyone on the ostensive Right who dares to deviate from acceptable norms. In <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2022/01/06/harris-jan-6-like-pearl-harbor-9-11/9116617002/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">likening</a> January 6 to Pearl Harbor and 9/11, the ruling class has laid the groundwork for a campaign to <a href="https://greenwald.substack.com/p/the-new-domestic-war-on-terror-has?s=r" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">categorize</a> broad swathes of the Right as “domestic extremists,” “terrorists,” and enemies of the state.</p>
<p>There is something to be said for how an incident like January 6, especially the way the ruling class responded to it, has likely pushed significant numbers of conservatives over the edge. The allegations of <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/04/06/capitol-riot-defendant-beating-guards-479413" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">abusive treatment</a> of January 6 demonstrators who are currently imprisoned has undoubtedly tarnished the US’s image as a bastion of freedom. When countries like Belarus are offering <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/03/23/1088205226/evan-neumann-jan-6-insurrection-suspect-refugee-belarus-asylum" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">asylum to January 6 attendees</a> in the crosshairs of the Potomac regime, the US’s “exceptionalist” brand has to be called into question.</p>

<p>Republicans are poised to retake the House and Senate in the 2022 midterms. On paper, Republicans could put forward spending proposals that downsize the FBI’s budget. These questions will soon be answered. And if history is any guide, one cannot expect much from conservatives in elected office. More often than not, grassroots voter bases are more sensible than party leadership; a dynamic that often creates a major fissure between party elites and their voters.</p>
<p>Many of these people who are questioning the deep state are not by any stretch of the term right-wing extremists. They’re likely normal Republican or “<a href="https://www.cato-unbound.org/2018/12/10/stephen-davies/great-realignment-understanding-politics-today/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">realignment</a>” voters who have grown disillusioned with the current political system. So much so that they’re beginning to rethink the very legitimacy of institutions that enjoy quasi-religious devotion from America’s bien pensants.</p>
<p>In previous eras, the average American treated alphabet soup agencies as normal features of national politics. Most couldn’t even fathom the prospect of abolishing an agency like the FBI. It would almost seem like a doomsday scenario. The amusing part of such fears is that the US did not have any law enforcement body <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/history/brief-history" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">resembling the FBI</a> for well over a century, and the sky never fell in that epoch of American history.</p>
<p>Thanks to the relentless propaganda from educational institutions and the corporate press, people have been conditioned to treat the FBI as a sacred institution. Upon reviewing the FBI’s history, it functions as a blunt instrument for a ruling class that is always looking for a nail to hammer down. For anyone who believes in a society predicated on voluntary association, property rights, and the respect for privacy, the FBI is not only nonessential but also represents an existential threat to the traditional liberties that Americans champion.</p>
<p>The modern conservative movement has made a litany of mistakes from cosigning on the welfare state to being enthusiastic boosters of the intelligence community and national security state. Their devotion to the status quo has blinded them to how the very monster state they support or at least tacitly accept is now being used against them. With state actors wanting to <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/article/united-states-early-days-domestic-insurgency/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">treat</a> various factions of right-leaning Americans like Islamist insurgents in Iraq and genuine domestic terrorists, conservatives are getting a rude wake-up call about the dangers of trusting the federal behemoth.</p>
<p>As they say, it’s better late than never. The more conservatives and other mainline constituencies grasp the depraved nature of the state, the more likely significant changes can be made in American politics. There exists considerable distrust toward America’s otherwise vaunted electoral institutions, as demonstrated by a 2021 Yahoo News/YouGov <a href="https://news.yahoo.com/poll-two-thirds-of-republicans-still-think-the-2020-election-was-rigged-165934695.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">poll</a> that showed two-thirds of Republicans believe the 2020 election was rigged.</p>
<p>Dispensing with the many sacred cows of the managerial state is key to changing society’s views of the state and moving toward a society based on subsidiarity and voluntary association. Once the luster of government agencies like the FBI is gone, ushering in substantive reforms such as defunding the FBI and outright abolishing it becomes much more feasible.</p>

Disney’s Corporate Welfare Is Modern Mercantilism

<p><strong>Florida’s government <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/21/florida-set-to-dissolve-disneys-reedy-creek-special-district.html" target="_blank">is poised to revoke</a> the longstanding special favors that the state granted the Walt Disney Company nearly five decades ago.</strong></p>
<p>As of Thursday afternoon, both the House and the Senate in Florida have voted to end the megacorp’s special district, which has long enabled Disney to engage in activities prohibited to other private groups and individuals in the state. The governor is expected to sign the legislation.</p>
<p>The impending change in status comes after senior Disney representatives repeatedly criticized the Florida GOP—currently the ruling party in the state—for legislation unrelated to Disney’s business dealings. Perhaps not surprisingly, this caused numerous GOP officials to question why Disney was receiving special privileges denied even to Disney’s direct competitors.</p>
<p>In the past, Disney’s special status was shielded from political dangers, as Disney has famously showered politicians in the state with gifts, campaign cash, and other types of special favors that normal people would identify as bribes.</p>
<p>Indeed, many of the same elected officials who are now voting to repeal Disney’s special status have accepted such “gifts” in the past. But for whatever reason, the political landscape has changed enough in recent years that it appears to many policy makers that it is now more politically rewarding to punish Disney rather than cater to its whims.</p>
<p>The situation has led to some strange political rhetoric and bedfellows. The GOP is now being accused of being “antibusiness,” while dissenting Democrats appear to have suddenly become laissez-fairecapitalists, pontificating on the virtues of low taxes and leaving corporations alone to manage their own affairs.</p>
<p>Ultimately, the Florida-Disney relationship has nothing to do with efficiency or private property, and absolutely no one at the state capitol has ever regarded the Disney model as a model to be made available to business owners in general. The real core of the Disney arrangement is one in which a powerful corporation and the state engage in a mutually beneficial political relationship. It’s an old model. The kings of old also granted special monopolies and favors to special interests in order to solidify what we today call “public-private partnerships.” These arrangements help to win over key allies for the regime among the wealthy elites.</p>
<h4>Choosing a Single Corporation to Favor over Others</h4>
<p>To get a sense of how this works, let’s first look more closely at what privileges Disney enjoys in Florida. The special district, called Reedy Creek, was established in 1967 and allows the Disney corporation to function with no local government oversight on its San Francisco–sized property outside Orlando.</p>

<p>The special status means Disney can issue tax-exempt bonds and build on the land without having to deal with any local government obstacles to development such as zoning laws. Supporters of the global conglomerate often describe this situation as some sort of favor to the taxpayers.</p>
<p>For example, CNBC <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/04/21/florida-set-to-dissolve-disneys-reedy-creek-special-district.html" target="_blank">frames the special district</a> as an arrangement “established by the Florida legislature so Disney could develop the infrastructure for Walt Disney World at no cost to Florida taxpayers.” In reality, of course, this infrastructure exists—and only exists—to funnel paying customers into Disney’s theme parks. It would be absurd, however, to expect taxpayers to pay for this sort of development under any circumstances. Ensuring private construction of infrastructure does not require a special state law written for Disney.</p>
<p>In the case of Disney, it is significant that this public-private partnership excludes Disney’s competition and applies to a <em>single</em> corporation. It’s not as if other private owners can access similar benefits simply by creating jobs or doing what Disney does.</p>
<p>No, such benefits are reserved for Disney and Disney alone. Disney, of course, is fine with this arrangement and would surely lobby—and likely already <em>has</em> lobbied—to prevent any of its competitors from enjoying similar status. At least one GOP legislator has noted this in defending the new bill, pointing out that Universal, SeaWorld, and Legoland have not been granted—nor are they likely to be granted—their own special districts.</p>
<p>And these three parks are just the <em>existing </em>competitors, who could muster up the capital necessary to compete with Disney on an uneven playing field designed to favor Disney. It’s impossible to know how many other entertainment venues and private owners <em>might have</em> also existed had Disney not sucked all the air out of the local market with its special deal.</p>
<p>Consequently, Universal has operated at a disadvantage for its entire existence in Orlando. Unlike Disney, Universal must deal with local ordinances, local zoning laws, and can’t enjoy the benefits of tax-free bonds.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.themeparktourist.com/features/20140919/29288/4-government-powers-you-didnt-know-walt-disney-world-could-use" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">For example</a>:</p>

<p>Reedy Creek’s control of its own zoning and building codes is the most important advantage Disney has among tourist destinations in Central Florida.</p>
<p>Take Universal Studios Florida, for example. Planning for USF began in the early 1980s, but it wasn’t until around 1986 that the plans for the park were officially announced. In what must have been a remarkable coincidence, Disney announced plans for their own movie-themed park in 1987.</p>
<p>But despite Universal having a sizable head start on Disney, Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) opened first in 1989. Universal Studios Florida didn’t open its doors until 1990.</p>

<p>It’s <em>possible</em>, of course, that Disney’s plans proceeded more quickly than Universal’s due to better internal management. But it’s also quite plausible—even <em>likely</em>—that Disney was able to push through its development at a much faster speed than its competitors due to its special legal status.</p>
<h4>A Form of Modern Mercantilism</h4>
<p>Nonetheless, these sorts of crony deals have their defenders among antitax and antiregulation activists. The argument is that since taxes and regulations are bad, then special deals for a tiny number of select groups or corporations must be supported. These people seem to believe that if Disney is granted a special district deal, then politicians are more inclined to grant similar deals to countless others. This is rather wishful thinking, to say the least, and no such thing is on the table in any state.</p>
<p>Indeed, a special district law for Disney no more encourages or enhances freedom for others than would a law declaring that “siblings and first cousins of state legislators shall be tax exempt.” Yet one could imagine certain libertarians saying, “Well, this is a tax break, and shouldn’t we encourage tax breaks? Logic dictates we must support this ‘siblings and cousins’ law.” In reality, of course, legal privileges for friends of the regime don’t actually move us in the direction of lowering taxes or broadening the marketplace. It’s just old-fashioned graft.</p>
<p>If anything, such deals <em>enhance</em> state power, and this is why <a href="https://mises.org/library/mercantilism-corporations-and-liberty-fallacies-lochnerian-antitrust">mercantilism</a>—the economic philosophy of absolutism—was built on special tax deals and on monopoly powers granted to selected corporations.<a href="https://mises.org/wire/disneys-corporate-welfare-modern-mercantilism#footnote1_tqf3g44">1</a> Such deals are a way of consolidating support from powerful interests. The fall of Disney has nothing to do with any general principle of limiting state power. Rather, Disney’s fall from grace in Tallahassee is in the same category as the palace intrigues of old, in which some favorite of the monarch falls out of favor and his exemptions from select royal mandates—exemptions never available to ordinary people—are canceled.</p>
<p>In modern times, deals like the Disney deal are just <a href="https://mises.org/wire/economic-development-corporate-welfare-scheme">corporate welfare schemes</a> in the form of “economic development” policies, favored by governments for decades. These policies favor certain large, powerful businesses but won’t extend the same favors to smaller businesses and competitors. Then, the corporate shills and their friends in the legislature or city council take credit for “jobs created” as if the economy would not have grown had the laws not been written to favor a select few. These deals use phrases like “low taxes” and “free markets” but really have nothing to do with laissez-faire or free markets. They’re about sweetheart deals for the politically well connected.</p>
<p>Naturally, taken totally in isolation, it’s never good to raise taxes or enhance government control over a private enterprise, which Disney—for the most part—still is. But there’s an unseen factor here as well. The unseen is how much private enterprise has been prevented, stifled, and shunted aside by laws written to favor a single corporation. Just as the mercantilist private corporations of old—such as the East India Company—stifled private business in America and helped fuel the American Revolution, today’s beneficiaries of modern mercantilism do the same. How much would the public benefit from other competitors in the Orlando area? How much less might have consumers paid for tickets at Disney parks had Disney not been able to legislatively keep competitors out of the marketplace? We’ll never know.</p>

<p><strong>A Russian-Australian man was told to leave a television studio after he asked a ‘rogue’ question and pointed out that there is an alternative narrative to be considered surrounding the conflict in Ukraine.</strong></p>
<p>The audience member Sasha Gillies-Lekakis was speaking on a live Australian debate show when he expressed support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine, angering other audience members and surprising the host of the show, Stan Grant.</p>
<p>“As someone who comes from the Russian community here in Australia, I’ve been pretty outraged by the narrative depicted by our media, with Ukraine as the good guy and Russia as the bad guy,” Gillies-Lekakis said.</p>
<p>“Believe it or not, there are a lot of Russians here and around the world that support what Putin’s doing in Ukraine, myself included,” he added before claiming that Ukraine has previously “besieged” the Russian populations in Donetsk and Luhansk, killing thousands of people.</p>
<p>Other audience members heckled him and yelled ‘propaganda’ and ‘lies’, while the host Grant moved the program on.</p>
<p>Around twenty minutes later Grant returned to Gillies-Lekakis and said he had ‘thought about it’ and wasn’t comfortable allowing him to stay in the studio.</p>
<p>“Something has been bothering me,” Grant said, adding “people here have been talking about family who are suffering and people who are dying. Can I just say – I’m just not comfortable with you being here. Could you please leave?”</p>
<p>“You can ask a question, but we cannot advocate violence. I should have asked you to leave then. It‘s been playing on my mind and, I’m sorry, but I have to ask you to leave,” the host added.</p>

<p>Grant later stated “we can’t have anyone who is sanctioning, supporting, violence and killing of people. So I‘m sorry for the disruption. It was not a vetted question. It was a rogue question. It’s not good.”</p>
<p>In a now removed Facebook post, Gillies-Lekakis explained that he “supports Putin’s grievances regarding the breaking of the Minsk Peace Agreement by Ukraine and the ensuing loss of life, particularly in the Russian-populated areas of the Donbas”.</p>
<p>He added, “My question, furthermore, sought to question why these Russian deaths were seemingly less important compared to Ukrainian casualties in our media coverage, and whether the panellists thought there was any hypocrisy in their positions as a result.”</p>
<p>“This is reflected in my question as published on the Q+A website. Unfortunately, I was unable to fully finish asking my question nor clarify myself despite trying, and so believe that my words were misrepresented and incomplete,” he further wrote.</p>
<p>Gillies-Lekakis further noted that his question was not ‘rogue’ and was submitted to the show’s producers beforehand, adding that he wasn’t able to ask it in full before being interrupted.</p>
<p>“The only addition I made to my question when actually delivering it was my reference to the Azhov Battalion (7-8 words roughly), and some sentences were left out towards the end as I was interrupted,” he said.</p>
<p>He added, “If this small change to my question amounts to it being ‘rogue’, as was claimed, once again I apologise. However, I find this difficult to reconcile with the fact that other guests were given the chance to speak at length, off-script, on the Russia-Ukraine situation.”</p>
<p>He said the Q+A host was “disappointing and unprofessional” and accused the network ABC of “questionable conduct” during the night.</p>
<p>“I am genuinely sorry that things took the turn they did … if my question was not appropriate for the show after being vetted and edited, I wonder why I was invited at all,” he noted, adding “I would like to say that I had no intention whatsoever of offending anyone, and so would like to sincerely apologise for any distress my comments may have caused.”</p>
<p>The incident has unsurprisingly caused division on social media, with some arguing these questions and opinions must be debated, while others proclaimed to do so is to support the bombardment and murder of innocent people:</p>

Ukrainian Tennis Star Demands Russian Players Be Subjected to Ideological Purity Test

<p><strong>The Wimbledon tennis tournament will ban Russian and Belarusian players from competing in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it has been revealed.</strong></p>
<p>Citing “someone familiar with the decision,” <a href="https://www.sportico.com/leagues/tennis/2022/wimbledon-ban-russian-tennis-1234673336/">Sportico</a> reports that players holding the nationalities will not be allowed to enter the tournament, regardless of their personal feelings about the war.</p>
<p>As we <a href="https://summit.news/2022/03/17/world-number-1-tennis-player-to-be-banned-from-wimbledon-unless-he-denounces-putin/">highlighted</a> last month, British Minister for Sport Nigel Huddleston suggested that Russians would have to display their ideological conformity to the current narrative surrounding the conflict to be able to take part.</p>
<p>“We need some potential assurance that they are not supporters of Putin and we are considering what requirements we may need to try and get some assurances along those lines,” said Huddleston.</p>
<p>However, this option has now presumably been extinguished, with an outright ban being imposed.</p>
<p>The decision supersedes an earlier directive by tennis authorities the ITF, WTA and ATP which said that Russian and Belarusian players could continue to appear at tour events, but only as neutrals and without displaying national colors.</p>
<p>The ban will prevent world number two Daniil Medvedev, last year’s US Open winner, from competing at Wimbledon, which starts on June 27th.</p>
<p>Fellow Russian top 30 men’s players Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov and Aslan Karatsev will also miss out, as will former women’s world number one Victoria Azarenka and current number four Aryna Sabalenka.</p>
<p>The ban contradicts the statements of WTA chief Steve Simon, who last month asserted that individual athletes shouldn’t be punished for the actions of their governments.</p>
<p>“You never know what the future may bring. But I can tell you that we have never banned athletes from participating on our tour as the result of political positions their leadership may take,” said Simon.</p>
<p>As we have exhaustively highlighted, innumerable people, and even objects, have been cancelled because of their connection to Russia.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, a Swedish folk band was <a href="https://summit.news/2022/04/13/swedish-folk-band-cancelled-because-they-play-a-russian-musical-instrument/">banned</a> from performing at a benefit concert to support Ukraine because they play a Russian musical instrument, with outraged critics claiming the balalaika was as bad as displaying a Nazi swastika.</p>
