The word <em>chess</em> comes from the Hindi <em>chattaranga</em>, meaning “four arms,” and was Arabized as <em>shatranj</em> (شطرنج).</p> <p>From the <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/21/chess-forbidden-in-islam-rules-saudi-arabia-grand-mufti">UK Guardian</a>:</p> <p style="text-align: center"><strong><em>Saudi Arabia’s grand mufti has ruled that chess is forbidden in Islam, saying it encourages gambling and is a waste of time.</em></strong></p> <p style="text-align: center"><em>Sheikh Abdulaziz al-Sheikh was answering a question on a television show in which he issues fatwas in response to viewers’ queries on everyday religious matters.</em></p> <p style="text-align: center"><em>He said chess was “included under gambling” and was “a waste of time and money and a cause for hatred and enmity between players”.</em></p> <p style="text-align: center"><em>Sheikh justified the ruling by referring to the verse in the Qur’an banning “intoxicants, gambling, idolatry and divination”. The White House agreed to pay a whopping $1.3 billion in interest on top of the original contract, claiming by doing so it was avoiding a greater financial loss at The Hague.</p> <p>US President Barack Obama tried to justify the transfer on Sunday, saying, “Iran will be returned its own funds, including appropriate interest, but much less than the amount Iran sought.”</p> <p>However, Gen. The girls, all aged between 11 and 13 years old were swimming at a public baths in Dresden when they were “touched immorally” by the man, <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="https://mopo24.de/nachrichten/dresden-vier-maedchen-im-schwimmbad-missbraucht-41129" target="_blank">reports</a></span> <em>MOPO24</em>. Two other migrants were also suspected. Remarkably, the arrested man has since been released from police custody.</p> <p>When approached by local media, the Dresden city director of sports said applying a migrant pool ban after the molestation of the children by migrants was out of the question.
