<p>The flu vaccine is something many of us take for granted. Every year, starting in the early fall, “free flu shot available” signs start to line pharmacies and clinics. But in the US, only around <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/fluvaxview/coverage-1920estimates.htm">half the population</a> actually gets the vaccine. When talking about the flu, many equate it to a terrible cold, inconvenient at worst. But annual strains of influenza are estimated to cause <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6815659/">hundreds of thousands of deaths</a> worldwide. The reality is, we’ve been living with influenza for so long that we often forget just how dangerous it can be.</p>
<p>The reason we need an annual vaccine for the flu in the first place: The virus is particularly <a href="https://globalhealth.duke.edu/news/why-seasonal-flu-evolves-faster-we-can-fight-it">prone to change</a>. That ability to mutate is also what makes it particularly good at causing pandemic-level threats. <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/basics/past-pandemics.html">The last four pandemics</a> before Covid-19 were caused by an influenza virus. Experts warn that <a href="http://www.emro.who.int/pandemic-epidemic-diseases/news/the-next-flu-pandemic-a-matter-of-when-not-if.html">another one is inevitable</a> and that our seasonal flu vaccine isn’t going to stop it.</p>
<p>For 80 years, the way we research and make our annual flu vaccine has remained the same. It’s a costly and timely process that <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/27/health/chicken-egg-flu-vaccine-intl-hnk-scli/index.html">involves predictions and chicken eggs</a>. The result is a seasonal flu vaccine that’s <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-work/vaccineeffect.htm">certainly good enough</a>, but we can do better. And now researchers are closer than ever to a big achievement: something like a flu vaccine that remains effective year after year, regardless of the strain. Something that could stop an outbreak before it starts; something like a universal flu vaccine.</p>

<p>Is Jeremy Strong a bad art friend?</p>
<p>The actor, acclaimed for his Emmy-winning role as Kendall Roy, the tragic, brooding golden-boy-turned-black-sheep of the family in HBO’s drama <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/22691830/succession-season-3-hbo-review-roy-logan-kendall-shiv-roman"><em>Succession</em></a>, has flown relatively under the radar as himself — until recently. Earlier this month, a well-timed <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/12/13/on-succession-jeremy-strong-doesnt-get-the-joke">New Yorker profile</a> of the actor went viral. In it, writer Michael Schulman portrayed the actor as mirroring his character’s intensity and self-centered focus in real life. Highlights include the time he nearly bankrupted a Yale theatre club in order to fete Al Pacino, famous friends (like Matthew McConaughey) calling Schulman for character references at Strong’s request, his stint following Daniel Day-Lewis around like a puppy, his penchant for quoting philosophers, and the repeated implication that Strong is the only <em>Succession</em> actor who doesn’t get that the show is a dark comedy.</p>
<p>The profile garnered the kind of reaction you’d expect: Social media users <a href="https://twitter.com/CarolineSiede/status/1467934539662114829">boggled</a> at Strong’s <a href="https://twitter.com/scott_tobias/status/1468967912564088837">behavior</a>, especially what Schulman depicts as his pretentious, pseudo-method-acting process, which includes everything from spontaneous script ad-libs to refusing to rehearse with his scene partners in advance. While some embraced Strong’s affectations, many online seemed to feel that Strong’s all-or-nothing personality would be <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%22jeremy%20strong%22%20%22insufferable">insufferable</a> to have to deal with on a regular basis, on-set or off, and that his behavior toward <a href="https://twitter.com/blahhhlicia/status/1468814873987538945">colleagues</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/dexterismyhero/status/1468110294312488961">was</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/journeydan/status/1467890246696247298">particularly</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/radiokeller/status/1468914236244037639">egregious</a>. The conversation was especially fierce on Twitter — as in “Jeremy Strong” trended on the platform for a full week — which is somewhat fitting, given that <em>Succession</em> seems to be in a constant dialogue with the kind of overtly performative viewers who are, like Kendall, in New York media and on Twitter, and obsessed with both.</p>
<p>But if the worst thing that anyone can say about a guy is that he’s really intense, or maybe even annoying, perhaps that’s not worth the extended social media critique that Schulman’s profile generated. The backlash raises a question: Is “acting normal” something we really want from artists? Is there really no room for eccentricity?</p>
<p>Following the profile, several of Strong’s friends within the industry put up messages of support, including <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CXWYaTJrRmy/">Anne Hathaway</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/jes_chastain/status/1468413489672769547">Jessica Chastain</a>, and Aaron Sorkin. None are strangers to charges of pretension. Sorkin, who directed Strong in <a href="https://www.vox.com/22363939/trial-chicago-7-aaron-sorkin-oscars-best-picture-roundtable"><em>Trial of the Chicago 7</em></a>, spoke on the record to Schulman for the profile, describing Strong’s desire to be authentically tear-gassed for the role. In an open letter <a href="https://twitter.com/jes_chastain/status/1469447303350173704/">posted</a> by Chastain, however, Sorkin wrote that he regretted “help[ing] Mr. Schulman create what I believe is a distorted picture of Jeremy that asks us to roll our eyes at his acting process.” (He also clarified that Strong would never endanger anyone else on set.)</p>
<p>Actors and their processes have long been mocked, inside and outside of acting circles, and with various degrees of understanding. But getting into character is something that’s commonplace for every working actor, including Strong’s <em>Succession</em> co-stars. (See: Brian Cox’s empathy for the often-monstrous Logan Roy in <a href="https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/brian-cox-succession-series-three-interview">this recent GQ interview</a>.) Strong’s widely heralded performance in the final episode of season three may have ended the conversation when it comes to him, but it’s just one in a recent spate of public debates over the value of eccentric artists — and an increasing need to denigrate and even <a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/2021/9/30/22696338/pathologizing-adhd-autism-anxiety-internet-tiktok-twitter">pathologize</a> eccentricity itself.</p>
<p>A somewhat comical recent example of eccentric artistry comes from the culinary arts, via Floriano Pellegrino, chef and owner of the Michelin-starred restaurant Bros in Lecce, Italy. Bros became briefly notorious earlier this month after travel blogger Geraldine DeRuiter <a href="https://everywhereist.com/2021/12/bros-restaurant-lecce-we-eat-at-the-worst-michelin-starred-restaurant-ever/">made a post</a> mocking the pretentious, overpriced, and frequently inedible 27-course meal she and her friends had there.</p>
<p>In response, Pellegrino issued a fascinating manifesto involving different artistic depictions of horses. “Contemporary art does not provide you with answers, but offers great questions,” he <a href="https://www.today.com/food/brutal-review-michelin-starred-restaurant-bros-goes-viral-t242696">wrote to Today</a>. “Contemporary cuisine should do the same. A chef should not offer easy answers, but challenge you with interesting questions.” While some of the questions Bros evoked <em>were</em> certainly interesting — how <em>does</em> one drink citrus foam from a plaster cast of the chef’s mouth? — others were pedestrian and annoying, like why the menu didn’t accommodate vegan dieters or those with food allergies. Still, Pellegrino’s point was clear: My right to be obnoxious in the name of Art supersedes your right to have a meal that’s tidy and unsurprising. It’s not an argument you could make at most restaurants, but it’s not without merit.</p>
<p>Questions of eccentricity and the rights of artists were even more complicated in the extended public debate surrounding Robert Kolker’s viral New York Times Magazine article, “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/05/magazine/dorland-v-larson.html">Who Is the Bad Art Friend?</a>” The article — the title of which is now the stuff of legend — details, in depth, the stunning quirks and lack of self-awareness demonstrated by a writer named Dawn Dorland, who donated her kidney to a stranger and then insisted on making sure everyone around her knew about it. (Which, it turns out, is what donation experts <a href="https://www.donatelifenc.org/blog/how-inspire-others-three-tips-sharing-your-story">want you to do</a>.) Dorland gradually realized that a woman she considered a friend, Sonya Larson, had not only plagiarized a locked Facebook post Dorland had made about the donation for a short story of Larson’s own, but had also spent years mocking Dorland with a group of Boston writers Dorland once considered friends and colleagues. Larson had been a far more successful writer than Dorland, but just as Larson’s short story was receiving major attention, Dorland’s plagiarism claims torpedoed her career. Not a great look for Dorland, given that Larson, who is Asian American, had used her version of Dorland’s kidney donation to critique race and class privilege.</p>
<p>Initially, the public reaction seemed to be overwhelmingly in Larson’s corner. Much like Schulman’s profile of Strong, the author gives Dorland just enough rope to hang herself. Kolker later <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/20/insider/bad-art-friend-twitter.html">explained</a> that he had attempted to “present both Ms. Dorland’s and Ms. Larson’s side faithfully,” but Dorland comes across as cluelessly self-absorbed. Kolker <a href="https://twitter.com/badartfriendo/status/1446695218171023361">chose his contexts</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/dancow/status/1451050477811023873">very carefully</a> and <a href="https://greenlivvie.tumblr.com/post/665306581878046720/framing-by-the-nyt-in-bad-art-friend">omitted</a> many <a href="https://twitter.com/TinyWriterLaura/status/1448647633380069383">extenuating facts</a> on Dorland’s side, and subsequent revelations <a href="https://rottenindenmark.org/2021/10/10/identifying-the-bad-art-friend-is-easy/">complicated the narrative</a> he presented.</p>
<p>Increasingly, Dorland seemed to many like the victim of a hate campaign — a woman who’d had a major life event stolen from her, weaponized against her, and used to make fun of her over the course of years, all for the sin of being a little over-earnest and socially awkward. Larson’s circle mocked her for everything from <a href="https://twitter.com/skepticalspice/status/1447260872662036487">making heart signs</a> with her hands to using smug hashtags. “She just can’t stop being ... herself,” Larson <a href="https://twitter.com/skepticalspice/status/1447457117611429889/">opined</a>.</p>
<p>At worst, perhaps this was just an episode torn from Reddit’s <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/">Am I The Asshole</a> that deserved the judgment “Everyone Sucks Here.” What it became, however, was a referendum on the limits and value of eccentricity, in art and in life. The titular question arises when Dorland says that Larson made her feel like a “bad art friend” for not wanting her own experience used. While many writers defended Larson’s right to steal from and transform any story she ran across, in the time-honored writerly tradition, many others felt that the malice involved — seemingly a result of intolerance of Dorland’s own complicated eccentricity — made the stakes much different from a simple case of artistic inspiration.</p>
<p>Part of the difficulty of interpreting the people at the center of these viral profiles and blog posts is that all of them are artists. There’s a sacrosanct creative liberty that artists often demand and receive from the rest of us — the towering personality of the diva, for example. There’s an expectation that the actor who’s allowed to be histrionic and demanding, or the writer who’s allowed to be oversharing and impassioned, will ultimately create better art.</p>
<p>If artistic license is the idea that’s fueling this ongoing conversation, the bigger question is about people, not the things they create. “My plagiarist fiercely maintains her right to an artistic vision,” Dorland <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/530782309/Document-128-Larson-v-Perry-Dorland-Bad-Art-Friend">wrote</a> at one point. “But don’t we bankrupt our art of its value if we don’t treat our human subjects with empathy?”</p>
<p>In an era where <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/8/3/16035100/personality-quizzes-fake-hogwarts-meyers-briggs-mbti-astrology-zodiac">personality tests</a> from Hogwarts houses to Myers-Briggs types are all the rage, personalities that can’t be easily labeled — that don’t fit neatly into well-understood, orderly boxes — may receive less grace than others who do. Ironically, even as society shifts toward much more nuanced understandings of neurodivergent brains, disordered personalities, and social anxieties, we sometimes fail to put that understanding into practice when confronted with the complex personalities of actual people.</p>
<p>Increasingly, particularly on the internet, one of the worst things you can be is “<a href="https://www.vox.com/the-goods/21575707/tiktok-cringe">cringe</a>” — to be so awkward, un-self-aware, over-earnest, passionate, or guileless that you inadvertently become a target of bullying for personality traits that in effect harm no one. Not only has “<a href="https://www.newuniversity.org/2019/03/22/cringe-culture-is-just-bullying-for-adults/">cringe culture</a>” become de rigueur on many parts of the internet, but the group experience involved in bullying or mocking anyone who happens to get categorized as cringe becomes justification for the mocking and bullying to continue. That seems to be what happened in the case of Sonya Larson’s group chat: As one brave friend eventually <a href="https://twitter.com/BeckyLTuch/status/1448317780462379008">confessed</a>, “When you enter a groupthink mentality where you are willing to dehumanize someone, you stop seeing them as a person.”</p>
<p>The assumption the rest of us tend to make in order to justify attacking the eccentrics in our midst is that they don’t know how they come across. Certainly that’s how Schulman portrays Strong — unaware that there’s a joke and that he’s the brunt of it. Perhaps that’s not the case, though. Strong, Dorland, and Pellegrino each seem to have some idea of how they’re being perceived, and to choose, despite the risk of increased mockery and pain, to continue being themselves, at their most extra and obnoxious.</p>
<p>Making this choice is a rite of passage for many of us — for the theater kids hamming it up, the fangirls shrieking too loudly at concerts, the excited nerds geeking out about obscure subjects, and on and on. The choice to embrace effusive displays of sincere feeling will always bring the risk of vilification. Perhaps when the next viral profile drops, we might push past the knee-jerk mockery, recognize the capacity for eccentricity in ourselves, and extend a little kindness.</p>

<p>A Donald Trump supporter was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting police officers during the attack on the US Capitol, the harshest punishment yet handed down in the investigation into the January 6 violence.</p>
<p>Robert Scott Palmer, 54, was seen in videos and photos wearing an American flag jacket decorated with pro-Trump patches and a hat reading "Florida for Trump" as he threw boards, a fire extinguisher and other objects at police outside the Capitol.</p>
<p>He had tried to enter the Capitol but was ultimately pushed back by pepper spray deployed by security officials.</p>
<p>After that he continued to throw things at officers, until he was hit by a rubber bullet.</p>
<p>Federal judge Tanya Chutkan rejected Palmer's arguments for leniency of a troubled childhood and a handwritten apology that said that he and others had been duped into attacking the Congress by the former president, whom he called "tyrannical" and "desperate to hold on to power."</p>
<p>"I realize that we meaning Trump supporters had been lied to," he wrote.</p>
<p>Prosecutors pointed out that even after his October 4 guilty plea, Palmer continued to defend his actions, labelling police the aggressors on a fundraising website page he set up.</p>
<p>"Palmer purposefully joined a large group of rioters with the specific intent of interfering with the nation's electoral process," the prosecutors told the court in a sentencing memo.</p>
<p>"Palmer's violence was in pursuit of his political goal of subverting a democratic election and the peaceful transition of power."</p>
<p>The previous stiffest sentence in the Capitol attack was 41 months, given to two men who were charged with obstructing an official proceeding but were not accused of assaulting law enforcement.</p>
<p>More than 700 people have been charged in the attack, most of them for minor offenses like illegally entering the Capitol.</p>
<p>But several dozen face assault and deadly weapons charges as well as conspiracy, which could lead to heavy sentences.</p>

<p>A US former police officer on trial for the death of a young African-American man wept in court Friday as she described how a routine traffic stop descended swiftly into chaos.</p>
<p>Kim Potter, 49, is charged with first degree manslaughter over the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright, 20, in Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, in April this year.</p>
<p>She claims the shooting was an accident, saying she mistakenly grabbed her gun instead of her Taser.</p>
<p>"We were struggling, we were trying to keep them from driving away. And then it just went chaotic, I remember yelling 'Taser Taser Taser.' And nothing happens, then he told me I shot him," Potter said, bursting into tears.</p>
<p>She said the moments that followed were largely a blank.</p>
<p>"They have an ambulance for me and I don't know why. And then I went, then I was at the station. I don't remember a lot of things afterwards," she said.</p>
<p>On Sunday, April 11, 2021, the white policewoman was patrolling with a colleague who decided to look up the driver of a white Buick that had committed a minor traffic violation.</p>
<p>After realizing that the driver was the subject of an arrest warrant, the police officers decided to arrest him. Potter described that as a potentially dangerous situation.</p>
<p>"Sometimes there's guns in the car. Sometimes there's uncooperative people, you don't know who you're stopping," she told the court.</p>
<p>Wright, who was unarmed, resisted being handcuffed and restarted his car to try to flee. Potter then drew what she said she thought was her Taser.</p>
<p>On a recording of the scene, Potter can be heard shouting "Taser" several times, before shooting with her gun and fatally wounding Wright.</p>
<p>The incident came during the trial of white policeman Derek Chauvin who had asphyxiated George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020 by kneeling on his neck for some nine minutes.</p>
<p>Floyd's death sparked nationwide protests against racism and police brutality.</p>
<p>Wright's death also triggered several nights of protests and unrest in Brooklyn Center before Potter's own arrest calmed tensions.</p>
<p>Potter's lawyer, Paul Engh, argued that Wright's death was a result of human error and the stress that his client was under, maintaining that she was attempting to protect a fellow officer as Wright tried to drive off.</p>
<p>But for prosecutor Erin Eldridge, Wright died because of Potter's reckless handling of her weapon and the negligence of an officer with 26 years on the force.</p>
<p>Ben Crump, the lawyer for Wright's family, said in a statement that Potter's testimony showed that "Daunte Wright's killing at Potter's hands was absolutely preventable."</p>

<p>According to reports, recidivist Steven Stillwell, 42, was shot around 12:50 p.m. after he threw a flower pot through a Lakeland homeowner’s glass back door and forced entry.</p>

<p>“That’s when the homeowner said he shot the suspect three times,” <a href="https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/lakeland-homeowner-shoots-critically-injures-intruder-who-broke-into-his-house-polk-deputies-say">reports</a> <em>Fox10Phoenix.com</em>.</p>
<p>A Polk County sheriff’s office <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.polksheriff.org/news-investigations/polk-county-news/2021/12/16/pcso-detective-investigating-shooting-in-north-lakeland" target="_blank">press release</a> noted the homeowner’s firearm was legally owned, though they did not describe the type of firearm.</p>
<p>“When deputies arrived, the homeowner immediately turned his firearm over and directed them to the suspect, who was lying on the floor of the living room of the home,” the press release stated.</p>
<p>Stillwell was transported to a local hospital where he’s currently in stable condition.</p>
<p>Police also recovered a shotgun belonging to Stillwell in the homeowner’s back yard.</p>
<p>Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd commented Stillwell, who’s a convicted felon, was not welcome – unlike this season’s expected visitor, Kris Kringle.</p>

<p>“He’s lucky to be alive,” Judd said. “Only Santa Claus gets to come into your house, and Santa Claus is invited.”</p>
<p>While an investigation into the shooting is still underway, the based sheriff went on to laud Florida’s castle doctrine for protecting a citizen’s right to defend their home using lethal force if necessary.</p>
<p>“The castle doctrine is very clear in Florida law. A person’s home is his refuge,” the sheriff said. “The evidence in this case at this point indicates that the suspect illegally forced his way into the home. The homeowner did exactly what he had a right to do. I commend him for protecting himself and defending his home.”</p>
<p>Judd added he recommends citizens get guns and learn to use them because when seconds count, cops are minutes away.</p>
<p>“I tell folks to get a gun, learn how to use it safely, and load it,” Judd said. “You can dial 9-1-1 all day long, but when that guy’s coming through the back door on you, we can’t get there in time.”</p>
<p>Charges against Stillwell are still pending, but he has an extensive criminal history according to police, including “14 felonies, 5 misdemeanors, and 11 re-arrest charges (VOP, etc.) including: multiple burglaries and larcenies, DUI, multiple violations of probation, drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a weapon/ammunition by a convicted felon, dealing in stolen property, and fraud.”</p>

<p>Across the country today in California, Democrat Gavin Newsom <a href="https://nationalfile.com/california-mandates-face-masks-overwhelming-majority-omicron-patients-fully-vaxxed/">announced</a> a new mask mandate due to the newly discovered Omicron coronavirus variant that so far has <a href="https://nationalfile.com/vaccinated-variant-20-omicron-cases-found-unvaccinated-people-cdc-says/">primarily infected vaccinated people</a>.</p>
<p>“In 48 cases in California we’ve identified, the vast majority, the overwhelming majority, have been fully vaccinated,” he added.</p>
<p>“And that’s why masking becomes even more important in this environment.”</p>

<p><strong>How did supermassive black holes form?</strong></p>
<p>What is dark matter? In an alternative model for how the universe came to be, as compared to the ‘textbook’ history of the universe, a team of astronomers propose that both of these cosmic mysteries could be explained by so-called “primordial black holes.”</p>
<p>Nico Cappelluti (University of Miami), Günther Hasinger (ESA Science Director) and Priyamvada Natarajan (Yale University), suggest that black holes existed since the beginning of the <a href="https://phys.org/tags/universe/">universe</a> and that these primordial black holes could themselves be the as-of-yet unexplained <a href="https://phys.org/tags/dark+matter/">dark matter</a>. The new study is accepted for publication in <em>The Astrophysical Journal</em>.</p>
<p>“Black holes of different sizes are still a mystery. We don’t understand how <a href="https://phys.org/tags/supermassive+black+holes/">supermassive black holes</a> could have grown so huge in the relatively short time available since the universe existed,” explains Günther Hasinger.</p>
<p>At the other end of the scale, there might also be very small black holes, as suggested by observations from ESA’s Gaia, for example. If they exist, they are too small to have formed from dying stars.</p>
<p>“Our study shows that without introducing <a href="https://phys.org/tags/new+particles/">new particles</a> or new physics, we can solve mysteries of modern cosmology from the nature of dark matter itself to the origin of super-<a href="https://phys.org/tags/massive+black+holes/">massive black holes</a>,” says Nico Cappelluti.</p>
<p>If most of the black holes formed immediately after the Big Bang, they could have started merging in the early universe, forming more and more massive black holes over time. ESA’s future gravitational wave space observatory, LISA, might pick up the signals of those mergers if primordial black holes exist. Small black holes might simply be the primordial black holes that have not merged into larger ones yet.</p>

<p>According to this model, the universe would be filled with black holes all over. Stars would start to form around these clumps of ‘dark matter,” creating solar systems and galaxies over billions of years. If the first stars indeed formed around primordial black holes, they would exist earlier in the universe than is expected by the ‘standard’ model.</p>

<p>“Primordial black holes, if they do exist, could well be the seeds from which all <a href="https://phys.org/tags/black+holes/">black holes</a> form, including the one at the center of the Milky Way,” says Priyamvada Natarajan.</p>
<p>ESA’s Euclid mission, which will probe the dark universe in greater detail than ever before, could play a role in the quest to identify <a href="https://phys.org/tags/primordial+black+holes/">primordial black holes</a> as dark matter candidates.</p>
<p>The upcoming NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, a cosmic time machine looking back over more than 13 billion years, will further shed light on this mystery.</p>
<p>“If the first stars and galaxies already formed in the so-called ‘dark ages,’ Webb should be able to see evidence of them,” adds Günther.</p>

<p><strong>The UK’s chief medical officer Chris Whitty said today that it could be “a number of years” before a ‘variant-busting’ vaccine is developed that would enable COVID restrictions to be lifted for good.</strong></p>
<p>“If I project forward, I would anticipate in a number of years, possibly 18 months, possibly slightly less… we will have polyvalent vaccines which will cover a much wider range [of variants],” Whitty told MPs.</p>
<p>Nervtag, a subcommittee that is connected to SAGE, which advises the government, is even more pessimistic, saying that COVID-19 could “pose a threat to the NHS” (necessitating restrictions) for another five years.</p>
<p>Whitty made the comments amidst a wave of hysteria surrounding the Omicron variant, which has supposedly infected hundreds of thousands of people in the UK yet <a href="https://summit.news/2021/12/16/just-15-people-with-omicron-are-being-treated-in-uk-hospitals/">hospitalised just 15</a> of them.</p>
<p>The government has completely failed to re-assure people that experts in South Africa say the Omnicron variant causes “mild” symptoms, instead choosing to amplify hysteria that threatens to decimate a hospitality industry already on its knees.</p>
<p>They’ve also ignored South Africa’s Health Minister, who today <a href="https://summit.news/2021/12/16/health-minister-says-hospitalisations-deaths-in-south-africa-remain-low/">said</a> hospitalisations and deaths in the country remain “relatively low” and that there is no need for new restrictions.</p>
<p>This has led to the sight of <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10316583/Workforce-stays-home-Londons-roads-quietest-summer.html">empty streets and public transport</a> in the UK as millions of terrified people cancel their Christmas plans and put themselves under lockdown without the need for a government mandate.</p>
<p>The suggestion that restrictions could continue for years makes a mockery of assurances way back in March 2020 when the British public were told to obey lockdown for ‘just a few weeks’ to “flatten the curve.”</p>
<p>They were also told the country would “vaccinate its way to freedom” in the early months of 2021.</p>
<p>Once a ‘variant-busting’ vaccine becomes available, if ever, get ready for a new virus to suddenly appear necessitating all the restrictions remain in place anyway.</p>

<p><strong>The panel will listen to presentations by CDC officials on thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), which U.S. drug regulators say has a “causal relationship” with the jab,</strong> according to a draft agenda for the meeting.</p>

<p>The syndrome is a combination of blood clots and low blood platelet levels.</p>
<p>Concern over patients getting the syndrome after getting the vaccine led to a near-nationwide pause in administering the shot in the spring, but the pause was lifted after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined the benefits of the vaccine outweighed its risks.</p>
<p><strong>Since then, more evidence has emerged linking the syndrome to the vaccine.</strong></p>
<p>Researchers with the CDC last month <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.11.10.21266063v1.full.pdf+html">found</a> people who got the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) shot were far more likely to experience the syndrome when compared to people who got a Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.</p>
<p>The reporting rate to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a system run by the CDC and the FDA, was 3.55 per million doses administered for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, compared to 0.0057 per million doses administered after one of the other vaccines.</p>
<p>The rate was the highest among women aged 30 to 39.</p>

Covid Vaccine Manufacturers Worried Refugees Could Sue Them Following Adverse Reactions

<p><strong>According to a report <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/refugees-lack-covid-shots-because-drugmakers-fear-lawsuits-documents-2021-12-16/" target="_blank">published by <em>Reuters</em> on Thursday</a>, several Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers are concerned about using the experimental shots on migrant populations.</strong></p>

<p>The pharmaceutical companies are worried that because the refugees or migrants are not beholden to any territorial laws, they could technically sue if an adverse event occurred.</p>
<p>Titled, “Refugees lack COVID shots because drugmakers fear lawsuits – documents,” the <em>Reuters</em> piece explains, “Tens of millions of migrants may be denied COVID-19 vaccines from a global programme because some major manufacturers are worried about legal risks from harmful side effects, according to officials and internal documents from Gavi, the charity operating the programme.”</p>
<p>The United Nations admits that most countries are locked into contracts with the vaccine manufacturers that required immunity from any legal ramifications for potential negative health effects connected to the shots.</p>

<p><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/16/covid-vaccine-side-effects-compensation-lawsuit.html" target="_blank">According to a 2020 <em>CNBC</em></a> article, “In February, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar invoked the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act. The 2005 law empowers the HHS secretary to provide legal protection to companies making or distributing critical medical supplies, such as vaccines and treatments, unless there’s ‘willful misconduct’ by the company<strong>. </strong>The protection lasts until 2024.”</p>
<p>Dallas, Texas labor and employment attorney Rogge Dunn noted at the time, “It is very rare for a blanket immunity law to be passed. Pharmaceutical companies typically aren’t offered much liability protection under the law.”</p>
<p>The FDA, which gave the vaccines emergency approval, or employers that mandate the jab as a condition of employment, are also protected from lawsuits by law.</p>
<p>In September, Gavi’s CEO Seth Berkley told Joe Biden’s Covid-19 Summit that he thinks manufacturers should “waive the requirements for indemnification for the humanitarian buffer, which is a lifeline to refugees…”</p>

<p>So, the producers of the most widespread and experimental medical program in human history wouldn’t sell their shots to desperate nations unless they were free from retribution if things went wrong, and now they won’t give them to the world’s most vulnerable people for fear of being held liable.</p>

<p><strong>In October, retail sales surged much higher than expected, rising 1.7%. The mainstream gushed over retail spending, asserting that it was a sign that the economy is booming.</strong></p>
<p>At the time, <a href="https://schiffgold.com/commentaries/booming-retail-sales-dont-necessarily-signal-strong-economy/">I argued that it wasn’t necessarily good news</a>.</p>
<p>Well, the news just got even worse. Retail sales in November disappointed, despite another big surge in inflation.</p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/12/15/retail-sales-november-2021/" rel="noreferrer noopener">Retail sales in November only rose 0.3%</a>. The consensus expectation was for a 0.8% gain with some economists projecting sales to jump by as much as 1.5%.</p>
<p>The mainstream blamed continuing shortages and suggested that rising prices might be cramping consumers’ wallets.</p>
<p>“Stubbornly higher prices — which consumers had shrugged off in recent months — are finally taking a toll on household budgets,” one economist told the <em>Washington Post</em>. “While grocery stores still did a booming business, it is telling that furniture and home furnishings sales were stagnant, and electronics and appliance stores saw sales plummet.”</p>
<p>In other words, the small rise in retail sales was due primarily to consumers paying more for gas and food. Meanwhile, they’re buying less stuff. This is particularly troubling considering November typically kicks off the holiday spending season. But sales sagged in in key holiday categories you would expect to show strong sales. Department store sales dropped 5.4%. Electronics and appliance stores saw sales decline 4.6%.</p>
<p>Peter Schiff summed up the retail landscape in a tweet.</p>

<p>Schiff makes an important point. Retail sales aren’t inflation-adjusted. The data reflects the amount of money consumers paid. It doesn’t tell us anything about how much stuff they bought. The retail sales figure is as much an inflation indicator as it is a sign of buying patterns.</p>
<p>An example makes this clear.</p>
<p>If consumers buy 100 units of stuff in a month at $1 per widget, and the next month, they only buy 75 units of stuff, but the price inflates to $2 per widget, retail would surge by a whopping 50%. But consumers only bought 75 units of stuff — a 25% decline. The number of actual units sold fell even while dollar sales went up.</p>
<p>This isn’t a sign of economic strength. It’s just inflation. As Schiff said, consumers are buying less, but they’re paying more.</p>
<p>The CPI rose by 0.8% in November. These rapidly rising prices are certainly factoring into the retail sales numbers and plumping them up. The fact that retail sales charted a much smaller rise than expected despite sizzling hot inflation doesn’t bode well.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Americans are putting a lot of their spending on plastic. As retail sales surged by 1.7% in October, <a href="https://schiffgold.com/key-gold-news/i-see-red-consumer-debt-jumped-again-in-october/">consumer debt grew by $16.9 billion</a>, an annual increase of 4.6%. Revolving credit, made up mostly of credit card debt, increased by $6.5 billion in October. That represents a 7.8% year-on-year increase. US consumers racked up $23.6 billion in credit card debt in the third quarter alone. According to Wallet Hub, that’s 46% above the post-Great Recession Q3 average. Americans now owe nearly $1.02 trillion in credit card bills.</p>
<p>It could be that Americans are running up their credit cards because they’re confident in the economy, as the mainstream narrative claims. But it could also be that they don’t have any choice. After all, you have to buy groceries and gas. This is where we’re seeing retail sales growth. If Americans don’t have enough cash to pay the higher prices, they have to charge it.</p>
<p>As Peter Schiff explained it, “Higher prices and an absence of stimulus checks forced Americans to borrow more to buy stuff they can’t afford.”</p>
<p>Clearly, this isn’t a sustainable economic model.</p>
<p>One has to wonder how this debt-fueled economy facing <a href="https://schiffgold.com/commentaries/a-runaway-inflation-freight-train-the-fed-cant-stop/">a runaway inflation train</a> will respond if the Fed raises rates in an attempt (<a href="https://schiffgold.com/peters-podcast/the-federal-reserve-is-picking-a-fight-it-cannot-win/">however feckless</a>) to stop that train.</p>

<p><strong>The Central Bank of Russia wants to ban cryptocurrencies in the country, Reuters has reported, citing sources close to the regulator.</strong></p>
<p>The regulator reportedly sees the rise in the number of crypto transactions as a risk to the country’s financial stability.</p>
<p>Digital assets have legal status in Russia but they cannot be used as a means of payment, as the government believes they could be used in money laundering or to finance terrorism. </p>
<p>According to Reuters, the central bank is now discussing a possible ban with market players and experts. If approved, the measure could apply to new purchases of crypto assets but not to existing portfolios.</p>
<p>The current position of the Central Bank of Russia is reportedly a “<em>complete rejection</em>” of all cryptocurrencies.</p>
<p>Reuters reports that when it approached the bank for comment, it said it was preparing an advisory report to voice its position on the issue. </p>
<p>According to the central bank, the annual volume of cryptocurrency transactions carried out by Russian citizens amounts to $5 billion. In a review of financial stability released last month, the regulator said Russians were among the world’s most active participants in the cryptocurrency market.</p>
<p>In October, Russia’s deputy finance minister, Alexey Moiseev, said there were no plans to ban the purchase of cryptocurrencies abroad or the use of overseas-based crypto wallets.</p>

Wellcome Leap Teams Up with CEPI For RNA Readiness and Response (Part I)

<p class="has-text-align-justify"><strong>Created in 2020, Wellcome Leap teamed up the Wellcome Trust with two former DARPA directors, who ran DARPA under the Obama administration, both of whom went on to create DARPA equivalents for Silicon Valley.  Essentially creating privatised DARPA specifically for Silicon Valley organisations who have ties to the US national security state: Google and Facebook.</strong></p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify"><em>This article is Part I of two parts.  This article explores the people and organisations behind Wellcome Leap and the R3 program.</em></p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Google received considerable input and funding from the US Central Intelligence Agency (“CIA”) and Facebook has considerable ties to the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (“DARPA”), among others. </p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Google’s “DARPA” is called <a href="https://atap.google.com/">ATAP</a> (Advanced Technology & Projects) and Facebook’s “DARPA” was called Building 8 but has since been <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2018/12/14/facebook-restructures-building-8-separating-projects-into-reality-labs-and-portal-groups/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9kdWNrZHVja2dvLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAADDN5xrZc7wCco82u1Txg4Aq7Oo2dCzoUw8esIDBUITxLUiv2WnMuZz22aY_KYjpY6cYbh7UzUB2c98SUHnR38pjFSb16G5gOxJBpA1jkHKpmlpQP6lTUepvyyVsOw5DnvzUB1oWpeQJhHSb4-UZaWcUEihlu0uf_ZiX8UP814BE">rebranded Facebook Reality Labs</a>.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">The Wellcome Trust – a UK non-profit with ties to global corruption throughout the Covid-19 crisis as well as historical and current ties to the UK eugenics movement – works closely with the World Economic Forum (“WEF”).  It was created through the will of Henry Wellcome, a pharmaceuticals magnate, and is the world’s wealthiest private medical research foundation. Henry Wellcome’s pharmaceutical company merged and became GlaxoSmithKline (“GSK”).  The historical ties between the Wellcome Trust and GSK are still evident today.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">A 1994 <a href="https://briandeer.com/hard-sell.htm">article by <em>The Sunday Times</em></a> recognised Wellcome’s goals stating that within its offices “rulings in biotechnology and genetics are handed down that will help shape the human race.”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">“Wellcome Leap defines themselves as a global health ‘DARPA’,” Whitney Webb said. It is basically a global research agency – Advanced Research Projects Agency (“ARPA”) – focusing on bioengineering and transhumanist technology that is also being modelled by national governments.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">It currently has five programs: Multi-Stage Psych, Delta Tissue, 1KD, HOPE and R3. </p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Three of their programs – Delta, 1KD and HOPE – are poised to develop incredibly invasive tech-focused, and in some cases overtly transhumanist, medical technologies, including a program exclusively focused on using artificial intelligence (“AI”), mobile sensors, and wearable brain-mapping tech for children three years old and younger.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Multi-Stage Psyche, launched in June 2021, focuses specifically on anhedonia, which it defines as “an impairment in the effort-based reward system.”  This Wellcome Leap program and its authors seek to develop “non-invasive” and, likely, wearable technology capable of monitoring an individual’s mood, facial expressions, social interactions, effort and motivation, and potentially even thoughts in order to “directly interrogate human brain state.”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">The RNA Readiness and Response (“R3”) program, which is jointly funded with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (“CEPI”), has recently <a href="https://wellcomeleap.org/R3">awarded 17 applicants funding</a>.  One successful applicant is Zoltán Kis at The University of Sheffield. “The new vaccine production unit at Sheffield will form a central part of Wellcome Leap’s R3 program, which is aiming to establish a network of vaccine manufacturing facilities across the world to increase the number of RNA-based treatments that are designed, developed and produced each year. The network will also be capable of rapidly producing new vaccines as and when needed in response to future pandemics,” <a href="https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/news/vaccine-development-and-mass-production-set-be-accelerated-new-manufacturing-unit">The University of Sheffield announced</a> today, 15 December 2021.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Wellcome Leap aims to complete all of its projects by 2030. “[By combining powerful people from various industries it] is a way to super charge and rapidly advance the technology that the ‘ruling class’ that is behind this agenda feels like it needs to develop, sooner rather than later, in order to succeed in accomplishing what they want before the year 2030,” Webb said during an <a href="https://www.bitchute.com/video/d0XI05h8FmQ/">interview on <em>The Corbett Report</em></a>. </p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">Vallance, the UK government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, was employed for 12 years by GSK and was appointed to the Executive Board of GSK in January 2017. He left a year later to take up his role within the UK government.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Chris Whitty was appointed England’s chief medical officer in October 2019. As a researcher he was <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-8077813/Story-Chris-Whitty-Oxford-graduate-leading-Britains-fight-against-coronavirus.html?fbclid=IwAR19mjYFc-ghKXsXhHhzSoCniOqrPlGFm72dz_-QRF3gS5V0u1yEhN84vFY">awarded £31 million</a> by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for malaria research. And Jonathan Van Tam, Deputy Chief Medical Officer responsible for emergency preparedness and pandemic planning, <a href="https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2017/12/06/tom-jefferson-the-uk-turns-to-witty-vallance-and-van-tam-for-leadership-revolving-doors/?fbclid=IwAR0sb-rU6-UmYK9B0K1hBK5AOd9tOyZ8xtBLdjA5x-iMEmR6qKa4fpTVs0w">is another ex-employee of GSK</a> as well as other pharmaceutical companies.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">It’s no wonder that in July 2020 the UK government reached <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/sanofi-gsk-to-supply-uk-with-covid-19-vaccines-2020-07-29?fbclid=IwAR2EaRO23fHZKtayfygdQCG73kit36M7a1U4PCEpryB25CpCwMYwLDH_aog">an agreement with GSK</a> to supply 60 million Covid injections.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">“In 2013, a new partnership between GSK and the Gates Foundation was announced: to ‘accelerate research into vaccines for global health needs’,” <a href="https://www.ukcolumn.org/article/covid%E2%80%9319-big-pharma-players-behind-uk-government-lockdown?fbclid=IwAR1UskYqh4jQjv-yjg9pthggQcA5EhNEpBL8ngF73vhOvuISmyRHylVcxBc">wrote <em>UK Column</em></a>, “Just as Sir Patrick Vallance was linked to GSK, so Chris Whitty, the UK Government’s Chief Medical Advisor, was on the interim board of CEPI until the permanent board was announced in 2018. Should we be surprised that the UK Government has invested £50 million in CEPI while being advised by Whitty?”</p>
<h3><strong>Wellcome Leap’s Main Characters</strong></h3>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Former director of the Pentagon’s DARPA, Regina Dugan, leads Wellcome Leap. Right before leaving the top role at DARPA, in 2012, Dugan greenlighted the agency’s initial investments in mRNA vaccine technology, which led to DARPA’s investments in Pfizer and Moderna shortly thereafter.  Dugan went on to become a top executive at Google, where she was brought on to manage Google’s ATAP which was modelled after DARPA.  In 2016, Dugan left Google for Facebook where she was chosen to be the first head of Facebook’s own DARPA-equivalent research agency, then known as Building 8.  Dugan left Facebook just eighteen months later to join Wellcome Leap.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Wellcome Leap’s chief operating officer, Ken Gabriel, is a former program manager at DARPA where he worked closely with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) and the CIA.  In 2012, Gabriel followed Dugan to Google’s ATAP.  According to Gabriel, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin tasked Gabriel with creating “a private sector ground-up model of DARPA.”  Gabriel left Google in 2014 to serve as the president and CEO of <a href="https://www.draper.com/">Draper Labs</a>.  He held that position until he abruptly resigned in 2020 to co-lead Wellcome Leap with Dugan. Gabriel is also a WEF “technology pioneer” and on the board of directors of Galvani Bioelectronics, <a href="https://dailyexpose.uk/2021/12/08/bioelectronics-your-chip-will-talk-to-your-watch-your-watch/">a joint venture of GSK and Verily Life Sciences</a> (formerly Google Life Sciences).</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Wellcome Leap is the brainchild of Jeremy Farrar and Mike Ferguson, who serve as its directors.  Farrar is the director of the Wellcome Trust itself and is behind the creation of Wellcome’s <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/03/how-are-companies-responding-to-the-coronavirus-crisis-d15bed6137/">Covid-Zero initiative</a>, which is also tied to WEF. Farrar has been revealed as an instrumental part of the team that crafted the official story regarding the zoonotic origins of SARS-CoV-2 and continues to be at the forefront of the global response to Covid, in part by launching the Wellcome Leap Fund for “unconventional projects, funded at scale” as an overt attempt to create a global and “charitable” version of DARPA.  Farrar, in conceiving Wellcome Leap, has positioned himself to be just as, if not more, instrumental in building the foundation for the post-Covid era as he was in building the foundation for the Covid crisis itself.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Chairman of the board of directors of Wellcome Leap, Jay Flatley, is the long-time head of <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/3058032/meet-the-new-ceo-of-the-22-billion-genomics-company-youve-never-heard-of">Illumina</a>.  In 2016, Illumina launched an “aggressive” five-year plan to “bring genomics out of research labs and into doctors’ offices.” Given the current state of things, particularly the global push toward gene-focused vaccines and therapies, that plan, which concludes this year, could not have been any better timed.  Flatley is a “digital member” of the WEF and Illumina, as a company, is a WEF partner.</p>

<h3><strong>Wellcome Leap’s R3 Partner, CEPI</strong></h3>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">The $60 million R3 program is jointly funded with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (“CEPI”).</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">“Forget China, it was CEPI’s bio-spooks who locked down the West,” <a href="https://www.conservativewoman.co.uk/forget-china-it-was-americas-bio-spooks-who-locked-down-the-west/">concluded <em>The Conservative Woman</em></a>, “the [Covid] response plan is in reality an American scheme, with its origins more than decade and a half earlier and against a backdrop of bioterrorism concerns.”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">A <a href="https://www.salesforce.com/uk/company/news-press/press-releases/2020/06/Salesforce-Isobar-CEPI/">Salesforce press release</a> in June 2020 announcing a partnership with CEPI who “will manage the entire lifecycle of philanthropic giving” confirms CEPI’s dominant role, “CEPI, the leading global alliance which finances and coordinates the development of vaccines against emerging infectious diseases.”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">CEPI was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coalition_for_Epidemic_Preparedness_Innovations">founded in 2017</a> in Davos, Switzerland by the governments of Norway and India, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust and WEF.  Members of CEPI’s board and scientific advisory committee have been, and still are, key actors in global and national responses to Covid, <em>The Conservative Woman</em> explained.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">“<em>On January 23, 2020, the global elite were busy congregating at their annual networking fest, the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland.  The next day, a little-noticed</em> <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDQtXzu6z08"><em>press conference</em></a> <em>was convened in Davos to discuss the SARS-like, closely-related, but definitely novel, SARS Wuhan coronavirus.  Appearing in front of about 30 reporters were Sir Jeremy Farrar, Director of the Wellcome Trust and board member of CEPI; Richard Hatchett, chief executive of CEPI, and Stephane Bancel, chief executive of Moderna, one of three companies being funded to develop a coronavirus vaccine.</em>”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Interestingly, CEPI’s ‘Why We Exist’ website section has changed.  An image <a href="https://t.me/TheConspiracyHole/1309">posted on Telegram</a> on 26 January 2020 has two paragraphs that have since been removed.</p>
