Moscow:
A BBC journalist said on Saturday that Russia was expelling her and had told her she could never return in "devastating" treatment showing the country she reported on for years was turning inwards.
In an unusual move at a time of already poor bilateral ties, Russia said Sarah Rainsford - one of the British broadcaster's two English-language Moscow correspondents - was being sent home after London's refusal to give visas to Russian journalists.
In a BBC interview, Rainsford said she was shocked by the decision which she felt was part of a wider diplomatic game at a time when Russia's ties with the West were on the slide.
The move not to renew her Russian visa beyond the end of this month looked like a technical one, but was not, she said.
"I am being expelled," she said.
"I have been told (by Russian officials) that I cannot come back ever. It's devastating personally."
Rainsford, who is on a second stint in Moscow, said she had lived for almost one third of her life in Russia and had dedicated years to studying it.
Her departure before the end of this month follows a period before parliamentary elections in September when the authorities in Russia have cracked down on Russian-language media at home that they deem backed by malign foreign interests intent on stoking unrest.
Rainsford said the Russia story had become increasingly difficult to tell in what she described as an oppressive environment.
"This is a clear sign that things have changed. It's another really bad sign about the state of affairs in Russia. Another sign that Russia is closing in on itself," she said.
The BBC has urged Moscow to reconsider and called the case an assault on media freedom.
Russia says it warned London many times that it would respond to what it calls visa-related persecution of Russian journalists in Britain.

Australia's biggest city announced tighter Covid restrictions including heavier fines and tighter policing on Saturday as authorities battled to contain a Delta outbreak and said they were seeing the "most concerning day of the pandemic" so far.
After months of pursuing a "Covid zero" strategy, Australia has been struggling to bring a resurgence of coronavirus cases under control, with more than 10 million people under lockdown in its two largest cities and the capital Canberra.
Residents of Sydney, going into an eighth week under stay-at-home orders, will now face heftier fines for flouting rules or lying to contact tracers, with current restrictions proving insufficient to stop the spread.
Lockdown restrictions were also extended across the entire state of New South Wales for the first time this year, coming into force on Saturday afternoon for at least seven days.
Police would boost patrols and checkpoints while hundreds more defence force personnel will help enforce stay-at-home orders as the outbreak in the most populous state of New South Wales hit another daily record of 466 community cases.
"Today is the most concerning day of the pandemic that we've seen," state premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney.
Describing efforts to curb the outbreak as a war against the "diabolical" Delta strain, Berejiklian said Australia was facing a significant threat from the outbreak.
"For some time, we thought Australia was different to other parts of the world, but we're not."
Police commissioner Mick Fuller said he had sought additional powers after officers reported people using loopholes to evade restrictions.
Residents are still allowed to leave their homes for exercise, shopping, health care and essential work -- but police would ramp up efforts to enforce restrictions, he said.
Rules for leaving Sydney were also tightened to prevent the outbreak from spreading further into other regions.
The nation's capital, which is surrounded by New South Wales, was sent into lockdown earlier this week while the second-largest city of Melbourne is battling its own outbreak.
The resurgence has increased criticism of the country's sluggish vaccine roll-out, with just a quarter of eligible Australians so far fully vaccinated.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said Saturday the remobilisation of the country's armed forces was a "top priority", as Taliban terrorists inched closer to the capital after routing the country's defences over the past week.
"In the current situation, the remobilisation of our security and defence forces is our top priority, and serious steps are being taken in this regard," he said in a televised speech.
He gave no hint he would resign or take responsibility for the current situation, but said "consultations" were taking place to try and end the war.
"As a historic mission, I will not let the imposed war on people cause more deaths," he said, appearing sombre and sitting before an Afghan flag.
"Therefore, I have started extensive consultations inside the government with the elders, political leaders, representatives of people, and international partners on achieving a reasonable and certain political solution in which the peace and stability of the people of Afghanistan are envisaged."
With the country's second and third-largest cities having fallen into Taliban hands, Kabul has effectively become a besieged last stand for government forces who have offered little or no resistance elsewhere.
But Mr Ghani praised the forces "that have defended the nation courageously and showed strong determination".

Kabul, Afghanistan:
American troops have flown into Kabul to help evacuate embassy personnel and other civilians in the Afghan capital, a U.S. official said on Saturday, a day after Taliban insurgents seized the country's second- and third-biggest cities.
The Pentagon has said two battalions of Marines and one infantry battalion will arrive in Kabul by Sunday evening, involving about 3,000 troops.
"They have arrived, their arrival will continue 'til tomorrow," the U.S. official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
An infantry brigade combat team will also move out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Kuwait to act as a quick reaction force for security in Kabul if needed, the Pentagon has said.
Britain and several other Western nations are also sending troops as resistance from Afghan government forces crumbles and fears grow that an assault on Kabul could be just days away.
An Afghan government official confirmed on Friday that Kandahar, the economic hub of the south, was under Taliban control as U.S.-led international forces complete their withdrawal after 20 years of war.
Herat in the west, near the border with Iran, also fell to the hardline Islamist group.
Kandahar's loss is a heavy blow to the government. "Kabul is not right now in an imminent threat environment, but clearly ... if you just look at what the Taliban has been doing, you can see that they are trying to isolate Kabul," Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said.
Some embassies have begun to burn sensitive material ahead of evacuating, diplomats said.
The U.S. embassy in the Afghan capital informed staff that burn bins and an incinerator were available to destroy material including papers and electronic devices to "reduce the amount of sensitive material on the property," according to an advisory seen by Reuters.
'SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL'
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that https://ift.tt/3sgIz0L "Afghanistan is spinning out of control" and urged all parties to do more to protect civilians.
"This is the moment to halt the offensive. This is the moment to start serious negotiation. This is the moment to avoid a prolonged civil war, or the isolation of Afghanistan," Guterres told reporters in New York.
Many people in the capital were stocking up on rice and other food as well as first aid, residents said. Visa applications at embassies were running in the tens of thousands, officials said.
Afghan First Vice President Amrullah Saleh said after a security meeting chaired by President Ashraf Ghani that he was proud of the armed forces and the government would do all it could to strengthen resistance to the Taliban.
The explosion in fighting has raised fears of a refugee crisis and a rollback of gains in human rights. Some 400,000 civilians have been forced from their homes this year, 250,000 of them since May, a U.N. official said.
Of Afghanistan's major cities, the government still holds Mazar-i-Sharif in the north and Jalalabad, near the Pakistani border in the east, in addition to Kabul.
The speed of the Taliban's gains has led to recriminations over the U.S. withdrawal, which was negotiated last year under the administration of President Joe Biden's Republican predecessor, Donald Trump.
Biden said this week he did not regret his decision to follow through with the withdrawal. He noted Washington has spent more than $1 trillion and lost thousands of troops over two decades, and called on Afghanistan's army and leaders to step up.
Opinion polls showed most Americans back Biden's decision, but Republicans criticized the Democratic president's handling of the U.S. withdrawal.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called the situation in Afghanistan "a debacle" but said it was not too late to stop the Taliban overrunning the capital by providing air and other support for Afghan forces.

India, Germany, Qatar, Turkey and several other nations have reaffirmed to not recognise any government in Afghanistan that is imposed through the use of military force and called for an immediate end to violence and attacks in the war-torn country.
A statement issued by Qatar on Friday following two separate meetings on Afghanistan in Doha said the participating countries agreed that the Afghan peace process needs to be accelerated as a matter of "great urgency".
The statement came as the Taliban continued its onslaught capturing a number of key cities in the last couple of days including Kandahar and Herat, Afghanistan's second and third largest cities while significantly expanding its territorial control across the country.
It said the participants urged the Taliban and the Afghan government to build trust and accelerate efforts to reach a political settlement and comprehensive ceasefire as quickly as possible.
The first meeting on August 19 was joined by the representatives of China, Uzbekistan, the US, Pakistan, the UK, Qatar, the UN and the European Union, the Qatari foreign ministry said.
The second meeting on August 12 was attended by representatives of Germany, India, Norway, Qatar, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan, the US and the UN, it said.
JP Singh, the Joint Secretary in the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran division in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), represented India at the second meeting hosted by Qatar.
"Participants raised grave concerns about reports from across Afghanistan with respect to continued violence, large numbers of civilian casualties and extra-judicial killings, widespread and credible allegations of human rights violations, all attacks (ground and air) against provincial capitals and cities," the Qatari foreign ministry said.
It said the countries reaffirmed that they will not recognise any government in Afghanistan that is imposed through the use of military force.
"Participants committed to assist in the reconstruction of Afghanistan once a viable political settlement is reached following good faith negotiations between the two sides," the statement said.
The countries also mentioned the converging statements from both sides on "guiding principles" for a political settlement such as inclusive governance, respect for human rights, including the rights of women and minorities, a mechanism to deliver a representative government, a commitment to not allow any individuals or groups to use the soil of Afghanistan to threaten the security of other countries and respect for international law.
"Participants called on all Afghan sides to act in accordance with these principles and build on them in the future political settlement," the statement said.

Because the 76-year-old man was diabetic and had heart problems, his daughter made sure her “at-risk” father was fully vaccinated.
In fact, both Rodriguez’s father Patricio Elizondo and her mother Sylvia Elizondo were fully vaccinated.
Sylvia passed away three months ago after “a long illness,” according to KSAT.
“We did all the right things,” the San Antonio, Texas woman said.
For example, Rodriguez said her father always wore a mask, rarely left the house and even wore gloves when he was out and about.
Because of his cautious actions, the man’s daughter explained that she has no idea where or how he caught the virus.

The mourning Texan also explained how Northeast Baptist Hospital staff refused to let her see her father in person and instead offered to set up a Zoom of Facetime call.
The deceased man’s cardiologist told Rodriguez her father died from lung damage, saying, “It was the damage done to his lungs from Covid.”
Despite the encounter with death, Rodriguez still believes in Covid vaccines.
One theory behind vaccinated individuals dying of Covid is that the spike protein in mRNA vaccines induces the same diseases Covid-19 induces.

According to the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://gasprices.aaa.com/page/13/?state=VA" target="_blank">American Automobile Association (AAA)</a>, the average cost of gas in Virginia this year is up by a dollar compared to 2020, from $1.98 for regular unleaded to $2.97 currently.
“My reaction to the high prices is that — of course, like everybody else, I don’t like it,” said another customer. “I’m of an age to remember when gas was in the dollars, so inflation is really affecting us.”
Another customer complained the high prices are causing them to have to budget differently, saying, “It’s just been really steep, and it’s making it harder to afford…I have to keep it in mind in budgeting in a way I used to not.”

Workers at the gas station say customers complain about the steep prices to them all the time, with some blaming employees for the expensive gasoline.
“They’re mad at me because the price is very high,” one worker stated, adding, “Sales are also less now.”
“Customers complain to me about the price,” said another gas station worker.
While the cost of gas is going up, wages are not, lamented another customer.
“It’s too expensive now. Everything is raised, but salary is not raised.”

NASA Shares New Image of Bright ‘Rings’ Circling Distant Black Hole

The black hole emitting the X-rays in question is located in a binary system some 7,800 light years from Earth.
A new image of what looks like a set of rings around a black hole has been released by NASA.
According a statement by the US space agency, the image, produced with data obtained via NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, shows a set of separate, concentric rings circling the black hole that is part of a binary system called V404 Cygni and is located about 7,800 light years away from our planet.
This spectacle is apparently a product of X-rays emitted by the black hole, with NASA explaining how an X-ray burst from V404 Cygni detected in 2015 “created the high-energy rings from a phenomenon known as light echoes.”

“Instead of sound waves bouncing off a canyon wall, the light echoes around V404 Cygni were produced when a burst of X-rays from the black hole system bounced off of dust clouds between V404 Cygni and Earth,” the NASA statement says. “Cosmic dust is not like household dust but is more like smoke, and consists of tiny, solid particles.”

The space agency also points out that these rings help astronomers learn more about what lies between V404 Cygni and Earth, as “the diameter of the rings in X-rays reveals the distances to the intervening dust clouds the light ricocheted off.”

“If the cloud is closer to Earth, the ring appears to be larger, and vice versa,” the NASA statement notes. “The light echoes appear as narrow rings rather than wide rings or haloes because the X-ray burst lasted only a relatively short period of time.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-joe-biden-business-health-travel-d2b00a2fddc5af7b8e23afbfd2961b02" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">A new report by the Associated Press</a> claims the Biden administration is considering mandating vaccines for Americans to travel between states.
This idea is being taken into consideration at the same time as America is dealing with <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/record-numbers-illegal-border-crossings/2021/08/12/e3d305e2-facd-11eb-b8dd-0e376fba55f2_story.html" target="_blank">record-high numbers of illegal immigrants pouring in through the southern border</a>, many of them bringing Covid.
The AP wrote, “Still, while more severe [Covid] measures — such as mandating vaccines for interstate travel or changing how the federal government reimburses treatment for those who are unvaccinated and become ill with COVID-19 — have been discussed, the administration worried that they would be too polarizing for the moment.”

Saying the administration is worried the policy would be too polarizing “for the moment” suggests they will likely change their mind in the near future.
For now, the White House is satisfied with mandating <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-joe-biden-business-health-travel-a1670ffa08f1f2eab42c675d99f1d9ad" target="_blank">all federal employees</a> and <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.newsweek.com/us-military-mandates-masks-vaccines-army-takes-doctor-who-questions-both-1619245" target="_blank">all military members</a> to get the jab.
The AP article also stated, “But even as Biden becomes more aggressive, he has refrained from using all his powers to pressure Americans to get vaccinated. He’s held off, for instance, on proposals to require vaccinations for all air travelers…”
<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/4980" target="_blank">Democrats have already introduced a bill</a> asking the Secretary of Homeland Security to mandate vaccines for citizens departing from or arriving at airports inside the United States or a territory of the United States, “and for other purposes.”

Requiring proof of vaccination to travel via airplane, bus, boat or train is one of the Biden administration’s next steps.
After all, <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/federal-government-mandatory-vaccinations-1.6140131" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Canadian government announced on Friday</a> new measures requiring all commercial air travelers and passengers on trains and large marine vessels with overnight accommodations (such as cruise ships) to be vaccinated.
Canada’s federal government is now also forcing all public servants to get the vaccine.
“Vaccine requirements in the transportation sector will help protect the safety of employees, their families, passengers, their communities and all Canadians. And more broadly, it will hasten Canada’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” Canada’s Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said.
If Americans don’t stand up to government tyranny now, interstate travel will be banned for the unvaccinated and that will only be the beginning!

It wasn’t until Covid allegedly hit the Lombardy region of Italy that people really started to pay attention though.
On the 19th March 2020, Sky News released a documentary entitled ‘The Shocking Centre of the Covid-19 crisis’.
Here’s some of the things they told you in that documentary –
“They’re fighting a war here and they’re losing.”
“The sheer numbers of people succumbing to the coronavirus is overwhelming every hospital in Northern Italy.”
“This killer pandemic is virtually out of control.”
“The doctors say they’ve seen nothing like it before, and are warning other countries – especially the United Kingdom that they will see it as well.”

This is probably the point that millions fell for the con, allowing the Government to implement policies which would ensure thousands of elderly and disabled people were euthanised.
But some could see what was coming, the problem is their voices were not heard on what has become a pathetic, propaganda arm of the UK government – the mainstream media. 
Advocates spoke out prior to the debate of the coronavirus bill on March 29th 2020, insisting the bill would lead to the ‘genocide of disabled people’.
A statement from Greenwich Disabled People Against Cuts outlined the following concerns –
“Should this Bill pass as is, disabled people will be forced to rely on family or volunteers to provide the support that is currently provided by trained, paid, Personal Assistants, care agencies, or residential home workers.
“This will undo decades of campaigning for Independent Living and Disabled People’s rights – potentially causing virtual imprisonment of disabled people, harm or death (through neglect, self-harm, insufficient support and / or suicide).”
The bill passed, as you will know, but the actual outcome over the past year and a half was much worse than anyone could have predicted.
The following is everything the Government implemented in March 2020 that allowed them to commit democide –
The Government <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/877302/guidance-for-doctors-completing-medical-certificates-of-cause-of-death-covid-19.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">changed the law under the guise of the coronavirus act on certifying deaths</a>.
This change of law meant that any doctor could certify a death, even if they were not the attending doctor.
The law also stated, and still states that Covid-19 could be listed as a ‘direct’ or ‘underlying’ cause of death for the purposes of the medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD).
The law also stated, and still states that Covid-19 deaths do not need to be reported to the coroner, despite Covid-19 being listed as a notifiable disease.
Did the doctors need proof under the new law that Covid-19 was the official cause of death? Of course not. The law stated, and still states that –
Medical practitioners are required to certify causes of death “to the best of their knowledge and belief”. Without diagnostic proof, if appropriate and to avoid delay.

The law also allowed, and still allows the cause of death to be verified remotely. The guidance explains that the person physically attending the body of the deceased need not be a medical professional but that they should ‘usually and normally’ be independent of family members. This is precisely what happened in care homes, as GP’s refused to visit.
The <a href="https://www.themdu.com/guidance-and-advice/latest-updates-and-advice/certifying-deaths-during-covid-19-outbreak" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">law on cremations also changed</a> –
The coronavirus act removed the need for a confirmatory medical certificate (form 5) for cremations. It also removed the need to examine the body after death as long as the deceased was either seen after death by a medical practitioner or attended within the last 28 days – in person or by video consultation.
The <a href="https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2020/7/part/1/enacted" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">law on indemnity for health service activity also changed</a> –
The new law meant that any person providing caring for or treating a person wo was just “suspected” of having Covid-19 would not be held liable for their death.

The <a href="https://committees.parliament.uk/publications/5747/documents/65438/default/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">final law change</a> that was critical in allowing the Government and it’s circle of scientific and medical advisors to get away with mass murder was the ban on visiting loved ones in care homes.
Family members—many of whom perform essential care giving roles—were either banned from visiting their loved ones or faced very significant limitations on their ability to be with them.

Whilst all this was happening <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/911541/COVID-19_hospital_discharge_service_requirements_2.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Matt Hancock and Chris Whitty instructed hospitals to discharge as many patients as possible into care homes</a>, the very place the patients loved ones were now banned from visiting, the very place a doctor was not required to visit to certify a death, the very place carers could not be held liable for a death as long as it was just suspected to be Covid-19.
The very place where care home managers refused to call out a doctor to treat an illness. The very place that care home managers refused to call an ambulance to take a resident to hospital. The very place that any patient with the first signs of just a sniffle were put on do not resuscitate orders without informing the patient or their family.
The very place where those do not resuscitate orders were used as permission to begin end of life care. End of life care which involved the refusal of medical treatment. End of life care which involved the withdrawal of existing medication. End of life care which involved the injection of lethal amounts of midazolam. End of life care which involved the deprivation of food and water, leading to the residents dying of drug overdose, starvation, and dehydration.

Is it just a coincidence that the number of prescriptions for midazolam in 2020 and early 2021 precisely precede the number of deaths due to all causes in the over 65’s during 2020 and early 2021?

That is an awful lot of coincidences, if you believe in them.

<a href="https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths?areaType=nation&areaName=England" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The vast majority of alleged Covid deaths are people over the age of 85.</a>
And

In relation to deaths of people with learning difficulties the ONS said – ‘the largest effect was associated with living in a care home or other communal establishment.‘
Can you not see a strong correlation here between the over prescribing of Midazolam and the seemingly premature ending of life, with the associated deaths being put down as Covid-19?
At the beginning of World War II, individuals with mental or physical disabilities were targeted for murder in what the Nazis called the “T-4,” or “euthanasia,” program.
The Euthanasia Program required the cooperation of many German doctors, who reviewed the medical files of patients in institutions to determine which individuals with disabilities should be killed. The doctors also supervised the actual killings. Doomed patients were transferred to six institutions in Germany and Austria, where they were killed in specially constructed gas chambers. Infants and small children with disabilities were also killed by injection with a deadly dose of drugs or by starvation. The bodies of the victims were burned in large ovens called crematoria.
Despite public protests in 1941, the Nazi leadership continued this program in secret throughout the war. About 200,000 people with disabilities were murdered between 1940 and 1945.
Certain people within the UK Government, certain scientific advisors, certain medical advisors, and certain NHS chiefs are complicit in orchestrating democide in the United Kingdom, just like the Nazi’s did during World War Two.
Except this time, they didn’t use gas chambers. They have instead used fear, deception, and Midazolam.

The Suicide Squad puts its director on a path to become the Gen X Clint Eastwood

<a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/7/24/17599132/james-gunn-fired-gamergate-guardians-of-the-galaxy">James Gunn</a>’s The Suicide Squad, the recently released “standalone” sequel to the 2016 catastrophe Suicide Squad (which was, presumably, just a suicide squad), is a nasty piece of work.
Gory and gross, the movie revels in a blood-soaked aesthetic, which might come as a shock to fans of Gunn’s two Guardians of the Galaxy films, both of which are less gory and much cuddlier. The Suicide Squad is much closer to the work Gunn did at the start of his career, when he wrote films for Troma Entertainment, a company famous for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvrsRuceWJg">low-budget horror films</a>.
The Suicide Squad also crystallizes a theme that has been building in all five of Gunn’s films so far: a distrust of institutions. (He also directed the 2006 creature feature Slither and the 2010 superhero deconstruction Super.) The movie explicitly argues that if mad science existed, the US would be all too happy to fund its dark excesses, provided none of those transgressions played out on American shores.
The Suicide Squad follows Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Bloodshot (Idris Elba), and a variety of other supervillains as they undertake a deadly mission on the fictional island nation of Corto Maltese, after a political uprising there installs a government that is not particularly friendly to the United States.
In its mashup of America’s adventures on foreign soil, the movie nods to numerous things the US government has done, including its use of Nazi scientists to gain an advantage during the Cold War and the CIA’s fomenting of unrest in Central and South American countries. It even presents a pastiche of Guantanamo Bay. This commentary is all in the text of the film, which goes out of its way to say, “America? That’s the real bad guy!”
There are a number of natural comparison points one could draw to The Suicide Squad. Zack Snyder’s superhero films (particularly his cut of Justice League) are similarly anti-institutionalist, with many of the same qualms, though they have much more faith in superpowered cops to save us all. One might also nod to war movies such as The Dirty Dozen or samurai films like The Seven Samurai, which also fall under the umbrella of “one tiny group takes on an overwhelming onslaught of bad guys after the supposed good guys turn tail.”
What The Suicide Squad most strongly brings to mind for me, however, are the movies of Clint Eastwood, a director who’s similarly interested in the weight of violence and the grossness of American institutions (though he and Gunn come at those themes through different genres and different politics).

Clint Eastwood rose to fame in the Western genre, sort of the superhero movies of their day. (This comparison isn’t exactly correct, but it’s close enough for purposes of this article.) Eastwood might still be best known for starring in the stripped-down films of Sergio Leone (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, etc.), in which he played an archetypal gunslinger wandering an empty, forbidding landscape. Later, he directed several of his own Westerns, including High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider, and (most famously) Unforgiven.
The five features Gunn has directed are almost all superhero movies, not Westerns. But at their most generic, the Western and the superhero film are having two sides of the same conversation: The Western is about the establishment of civilization, and the superhero movie is about upholding it at any cost. They’re mirror genres of each other.
In the most archetypal possible Western, a lawman comes to the frontier and protects a small town and its innocent (white) citizens from the bad guys (who might be criminals or might be Native Americans). In the most archetypal possible superhero movie, a superpowered individual embraces their truly heroic nature to preserve the world order after a superpowered villain threatens to destabilize it. At their core, Westerns are about the establishment of America as a superpower stretching across an entire continent, and superhero movies are about propping up that superpower against all who would collapse it.
You can surely point to Westerns and superhero movies that flout those generic descriptions (some of them directed by Eastwood and Gunn). The flouting of convention is good — we’d get awfully bored if every single movie adhered to established genre conventions.
In particular, Eastwood’s Westerns and Gunn’s superhero films both play with revisionism of genre tropes. Revisionist stories tend to pick apart one or all of the tropes that define a genre. The Suicide Squad, for instance, isn’t the first movie to suggest that supervillains might actually be the good guys, but it is one of just a handful of superhero films to hint that destabilizing the world order <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/9/10/17788022/summer-movies-2018-best-blockbusters-politics">might be a good thing</a>.
The revisionist Western is a rich tradition within that genre (1956’s The Searchers, 1962’s The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, etc.), but perhaps the Western that became most famous as “a revisionist Western” — what pretty much every critic described it in reviews — is 1992’s Unforgiven, for which Eastwood won his first Oscar for directing. Unforgiven looks directly at the legacies of violence that built the American West, and stars Eastwood himself as a retired gunslinger who’s pulled back in for one last job: working to bring to justice two cowboys who disfigured a sex worker.
The film directly tackles several of the underlying assumptions of the “classic” Western. Civilization is ultimately just as lawless as the frontier, in Unforgiven’s estimation. After all, the gunslinger is only recruited — by a group of women seeking justice — because local law enforcement simply didn’t care about the woman who was harmed.
Unforgiven also plays off a trope familiar in a genre that’s closely related to the Western: the revenge thriller. In revenge thrillers, violence can solve maybe one problem but also creates more. Eventually, a character becomes so stuck in a cycle of violence that they can never escape it. The gunslinger in Unforgiven just wanted to retire to the middle of nowhere and be a farmer, but his past keeps coming back to claim him.
Revisionist takes can open up new ground in genres that have become ossified and boring. They can also introduce new tropes that become clichés themselves. (“Violence only begets more violence” was, at one time, a pretty new idea in the revenge thriller. Now it’s almost a standard of the genre.)
Regardless, they do have a tendency toward cynicism, and they tend to attract filmmakers who have a distrust of the way things are usually done. Eastwood is one of those filmmakers — and doesn’t that description also sound a lot like James Gunn?

At first, comparing these two directors might seem odd. Eastwood is a famous conservative who once <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=933hKyKNPFQ">ranted at an empty chair</a> meant to represent Barack Obama, while Gunn is a solid lefty. But the more you examine the politics of both men’s films, the more a libertarian streak emerges, one that unites them across our current political divide.
The Suicide Squad spends most of its runtime attempting (badly) to burnish its lefty credentials. The movie’s cast is casually diverse, and it has a supreme distrust of law enforcement. It is rare for any big American studio movie, let alone a superhero movie, to so much as glance at the idea that US foreign policy might be making the world a worse place, and even if I think The Suicide Squad gets only about 75 percent of the way to making a point centered on this idea, I appreciate its attempts to have a larger political message.
After leaving The Suicide Squad, I couldn’t stop thinking about Eastwood’s 2014 film <a href="https://www.vox.com/2015/1/21/7865145/american-sniper-review">American Sniper</a>. In that Iraq War-centered drama, Eastwood uses the life of sniper Chris Kyle (a real person who, I should note, said several things <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jan/06/real-american-sniper-hate-filled-killer-why-patriots-calling-hero-chris-kyle">that were horribly racist</a>) to ruminate on something he’s always been interested in: namely, the ways American institutions grind up the men they supposedly support in the name of spreading violence.
The politics of both American Sniper and The Suicide Squad are vague and confusing in many ways. American Sniper is furious that men like Kyle were abandoned by their government once they returned stateside, and it has supreme empathy for American soldiers struggling with combat-related PTSD. It’s not particularly interested in the Iraqis whom Kyle killed, and it creates a villain who might as well be a stereotype of an Arab terrorist. Simply by making Kyle its protagonist, American Sniper could be seen as endorsing some of his most horrifying views about Arab people. (<a href="https://www.avclub.com/american-sniper-fought-a-culture-war-on-the-box-office-1847138948">The A.V. Club’s Tom Breihan</a> has more on this point.)
Seen in the context of Eastwood’s career, though, American Sniper seems to lean slightly more toward “skepticism about America,” rather than toward an explosion of patriotic cheerleading. His 2006 films — Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima — look at World War II’s Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspectives of both the American and Japanese soldiers. The two films have supreme empathy for the men enmeshed in these wars, and a deep skepticism of the military apparatus that put them there. Eastwood is frequently interested in violence and what it does to someone who indulges in it. He’s also compelled by notions about what it means to be a “hero,” if such a thing can even be defined.
James Gunn is interested in all those things too. Like American Sniper, The Suicide Squad is a movie about how American institutions will grind people up in the name of spreading violence abroad, and the ways those chickens can come home to roost.
Also like American Sniper, the film is profoundly uninterested in the perspectives of anyone who’s not American. When thousands of corpses — few of which are members of the Suicide Squad itself — litter the capital city of the fictional Corto Maltese at the film’s end, the movie essentially shrugs. They were zombies controlled by a horrible, psychic starfish monster, so they don’t matter. But the Suicide Squad teammate who died in the final battle? Now there’s a death that is worthy enough to mourn.
That uneasy divide is what I refer to when I say The Suicide Squad doesn’t quite have a point to make. It has heard of American foreign policy skepticism, but it doesn’t know what to do with that concept because it’s so wedded to the idea that there have to be good guys somewhere, even if they’re convicted criminal supervillains like Harley Quinn and her friends.
A superhero movie must end with a big battle, and we haven’t yet reached the stage of superhero revisionism where such a battle can complicate the idea that the final foe might have the correct point of view. Hence a giant starfish monster who wants to take over the planet, rather than a more direct depiction of the US as … a giant monster that wants to take over the planet. (The movie can work as metaphor, but you have to stretch a bit.)
Like Eastwood, Gunn is interested in making movies about how everything is fucked and only your comrades in arms can save you. The antagonists in both Guardians of the Galaxy films include ineffectual governments that can’t accomplish what the Guardians can. Those governments might not be actively villainous, but they still get in the way. Meanwhile, The Suicide Squad is actively contemptuous of the idea that any government anywhere could want something good for its citizens; in its view, once you have power, all you want is more of it.
Indeed, as The Suicide Squad ends, the members of the titular squad briefly toy with the idea of exposing everything the US government has done, but then decide to trade what intelligence they have for their lives and for the freedom of one of their daughters (who’s in danger of going to jail). In the end, everybody’s out for themselves, and no one can quite trust even their own motives. The world is a mean and dreadful place, and the best you can do is look out for you and yours.
But this is a theme that doesn’t really fall on either side of the political aisle. You can use that phrase to rally your leftist mutual-aid network or your conservative militia. Gunn can be a liberal; Eastwood can be a conservative. They can both believe the US government has profoundly failed us, and the only heroism to be found is on a smaller, more personal scale.
I do not think Gunn has yet made a movie as good as Eastwood’s best films, but The Suicide Squad shows that he’s growing ever more interested at subverting the conventions of the superhero genre. I hope he keeps plugging away at this task. Superhero films need someone like him, digging away at their underpinnings, trying to figure out the lies the genre would ask us to believe.

There’s a growing consensus among health experts: Covid-19 may never go away. We’ll likely always have some coronavirus out there, infecting people and, hopefully only in rare cases, getting them seriously ill. The realistic goal is to defang the virus — make it less deadly — not eliminate it entirely.
This is not a surrender to the virus. For a long time, we’ve lived with the seasonal flu, a family of viruses that kills up to tens of thousands of Americans each year. While we can and should take steps to mitigate the risks of the flu (including getting vaccinated for it every year), we’ve never been willing to shut down society or close in-person schooling to fully eradicate it. Americans have accepted some level of risk to continue living normally.
The same will likely be true with Covid-19. The highly transmissible delta variant appears to have cemented this possibility, showing the coronavirus <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/08/breakthrough-covid-19-cases-may-be-a-bigger-problem.html">will continue to spread</a> even in states and countries with higher vaccination rates.
If you go back to the earlier days of the pandemic, the original hope with vaccines was more modest. Previously, the Food and Drug Administration set the standard for an acceptable Covid-19 vaccine at 50 percent efficacy. The expectation was that the vaccine wouldn’t stop all cases of Covid-19, but would at least reduce the severity of the disease. As Baylor College’s Peter Hotez <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/fda-s-cutoff-covid-19-vaccine-effectiveness-50-percent-what-n1245506">put it at the time</a>, “Even if it’s not the best vaccine, it still could prevent me from going to the hospital or worse.”
Yet somewhere along the way — perhaps with the news the vaccines were far more effective than expected — that message has been lost. And now anything short of perfection is perceived as a failure.
Consider the recent <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7031e2.htm">study</a>, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on the outbreak in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/07/30/provincetown-covid-outbreak-vaccinated/">initial headlines</a> about the study focused on the fact that three-fourths of cases tracked in the study were among vaccinated people, showing the virus spread in a very vaccinated community. The implication, propped up by the CDC’s new guidance that vaccinated people should wear masks indoors in public, was that the delta variant can spread at a high level among even the people who got their shots.
But if you <a href="https://www.vox.com/22602039/breakthrough-cases-covid-19-delta-variant-masks-vaccines">dig into the details of the outbreak</a>, they revealed some very good news for vaccinated people. Among the more than 1,000 cases so far linked to Provincetown, there have only been seven reported hospitalizations (some unvaccinated) and no deaths.
If this was 2020, given overall hospitalization and death rates, the outbreak would have likely produced roughly 100 hospitalizations and 10 deaths.
The Provincetown outbreak, then, showed that the vaccines had worked to defang the coronavirus — to make it more like the flu.
“We should cheer,” Amesh Adalja at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security told me. “The Provincetown outbreak, contrary to what the press reported, was evidence not of the vaccines’ failure but of their smashing success.”
In short: Pay attention to hospitalizations and deaths, not just cases.
There are concerns about “long Covid” — lingering effects in those infected, like overwhelming fatigue. Still, experts say serious long-term symptoms after a Covid-19 infection seem to be fairly rare (though this issue is still being studied). And, at any rate, these kinds of long-term symptoms aren’t unique to the coronavirus; they happen, for one, <a href="https://www.vox.com/22298751/long-term-side-effects-covid-19-hauler-symptoms">with seasonal flu</a>.
While we still have to get more people vaccinated, at a certain point we’ll have to acknowledge we’ve done what we can. It might not be ideal, but we can learn to live with a vaccine-weakened version of Covid-19 — hopefully not too unlike how we’ve long dealt with the flu.
