It was home to 1.5 million Christians under Saddam Hussein but after the U.S. invaded in 2003, al-Qaida started bombing churches and kidnapping prominent Christian leaders. When we think of icons, we automatically think of paintings or statues, and while these are certainly icons, let us never forget that the greatest icon is the one who shines with the unseen light of God, so bright that it brings people to the One by Whom man knows the Father in Heaven.</p> <p>The human icon is not only a hero for the Faith, but a preserver of Christian civilization. By him does man see the glory of God, by him does man thirst and seek for the eternal love of Paradise, by him does man look to the world, not with earthly eyes, but with the eyes of the soul. “You are the light of the world.” And so “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14, 16) Christ tells this to His Church, to human beings who are made in the image and likeness of God. He said this to icons, icons that bring man to a contemplation on the heavenly, and constantly remind him of who he is in Christ. We have so many statues erected of men made famous for secular accomplishments, and many times of plainly evil men.</p> <p>But where are the statues of the martyrs, where are the paintings of their contests, over which they conquered and for which they received their crowns of glory? Why do we have statues of presidents, politicians, feminists and explorers, yet we do not dare inundate the society with the images that would reminds us of the most important thing? that is, the realization that we are not here for our selves, that our “bodies are members of Christ” (1 Corinthians 6:15), that “you are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19), that we are given a destiny that breaks through the physical, the beautiful purpose to stand in the midst of this capricious world, as a beacon of order, as an exemplifier of harmony, as a living candle that shines with the unseen light that repulses the infernal spirits naked to the eye, and pulls in those whose souls are parched by the waves of the watery abyss, into the bright rays of the Holy Cross, so that we can say with the Gospel, “people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” (Matthew 4:16) It is that sublime purpose, to be an icon.</p> <p>Christianity is the originator of civilization; the holy Faith calms the spirit, brings men away from what is disorderly and depraved, it cuts off the dried tree of apathy, it goes into the desert, and transforms it into a luscious field, so fecund and fertile, that when the seeds of the soul fall upon it, they yield “a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” (Matthew 13:8) Christianity drives savages away from their savagery; it has brought pagans away from cannibalism, it has compelled their spirits to no longer have the lust for human blood, it brings them away from the mindset of a creature lower than an animal, to the eternal love only unseen to the eyes, but desperately being sought out for by the thirsty mouth of the soul, and sung of by the choirs of angels in the boundless Heavens. For “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12) Christianity brings man back to that light that was placed in humanity, that lied in the mind of the Triune God when He said:</p> <p>“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” (Genesis 1:26)</p> <p>The Faith destroys savagery, for it brings man to his beginning, a beginning that has no end, but that leads one into eternity. This beginning is the likeness and image of God, it is what makes man an icon of his Creator. And it is the icon that men see on account of his brightness, for his good works, that make him a light to the world. The Christian is an icon that has men turn away from what his evil, and walk upon the path of life. When the Conquistadors destroyed the idols of the Indians and brought them to the Faith, they were icons of God, bringing those who were lost in darkness to the light that reinvigorated the eternal flame within them, so that they could throw away the likeness of demons and be in the likeness and image of God. To be an icon is to be as Christ, “To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:79)</p> <p>This is the truest form of worship, to be an icon, standing before God until we reach our eternal homes. For to be an icon is to emulate God, to “be imitators of God as dear children” (Ephesians 5:1), to be His likeness and His image. We love to make a separation between regular life and worship, but what most never realize is that life is worship. This is what is meant when St. Paul wrote: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-17). People read this and think that this means that we must be constantly mumbling. But what this means is that our entire lives must be an act of worship.</p> <p>The entirety of our lives should be to continuously strive to be like God, to the point that <em>being</em> unto itself is a rite of worship. As St. Theophan the Recluse wrote in regards to prayer:  “The principal thing is to stand before God with the mind in the heart and to go on standing before him unceasingly day and night until the end of life.”</p> <p>Being made in God’s image and likeness means that we have within ourselves the creative nature of God. God creates, so we create. The creation is a living symphony, it is a harmonious melody that sings with silence, only to be heard in the Heavenly Mount Zion. But God wants us in the symphony, not being separate from His plan, but a part of it, to be the conductors and the musicians, to sing with the angels, to partake in the chorus of martyrs, to not only behold the beauty of creation’s harmony, but to be the harmony itself, so that when the world hears the unsurpassable sound, they will flock to hear the music of Heaven, emanating from God — the Eternal Composer — through you, as a ray of the sun beams so sharply through the a piece of transparent glass. To be like God is to be creative as God is creative, doing everything for His glory. As the Apostle says, “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31) God’s creation is beautiful, and let everything we do be beautiful, and let this beauty be a light to the world, as the stars guide the ships in the gloomy darkness.</p> <p>God created us in His image, and thus do we, bearing His image, emulate God when we create things with beauty, harmony and order. Because God is the Creator, we, being made in His image, create.</p> <p>And so, the greatest form of worship is to emulate God, doing everything that we do to partake in the creative nature of God, forming everything with beauty.</p> <p><em>“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children” (Ephesians 5:1)<br /></em></p> <p>Even when we cook, we can worship God by forming the dish with all our effort to make it beautiful and delicious, in order to imitate the beautiful creativity of God.<br /> The Scripture says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-17)<br /> How does one worship God always? By exerting all our energy to make everything we do beautiful.</p> <p>The greatest worship is to imitate God in action. Worship God, create beauty. As I write these words, I worship God, as I write these words I am praying. The greatest worship is to imitate God in action. Worship God, create beauty. This is what we learn from the readings of the holy Fathers, a teaching lost and forgotten to the mumblers of today.</p> <p>This is why in Christendom, art was at its peak in beauty, be it music, paintings and agriculture; the standard of art was to be God’s standard, it was to have order as God has order, it was to be harmonious and awe inspiring. Why was this? Because the men of Christendom wanted to emulate God, they wanted to be sacred icons. The greatest form of worship is to be a holy icon, putting all vigor and tenacity into all that we do. To be an icon of God is to say with St. Paul, “it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).</p> <p>As an icon of God, your body is not your own, the self has been denied and the Cross is being carried; all the good that you do is done for God’s glory, you are a ship and your sail is being guided by the hands of God, carried up over the waves to be above the oceans of the world, to cross the vicious floods and reach the top of the Ararat of theosis. And even if the ship crashes, it is done for Providence, for you will swim across the violent waters, and like St. Paul, reach Malta to seize the serpent and throw him into the flames.</p> <p>The Italian mystic, Lorenzo Scupoli, once said:</p> <blockquote> <p>I will tell you plainly: the greatest and most perfect thing a man may desire to attain is to come near to God and dwell in union with Him. (The Unseen Warfare, ch. 1)</p> </blockquote> <p>This is what it means to be an icon, for “he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” (1 Corinthians 6:17) To be an icon of God is to be a part of the Lord’s army. God loved the icon of humanity so much, that He became an icon, “the image of the invisible God” (1 Colossians 1:15), to show us what it means to be an icon, that is, to “destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8) For this reason does Satan hate the icons of God, he wishes to destroy them through persecutions and oppressions; he influences his slaves to kill them and make them miserable. The slaves of the devil are not icons of God, but they are the idols of the abyss, who failed to listen to the command of Christ, “take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” (Luke 11:35) Thus, the wicked — while they were created in the image of God — lose their image of God, and become idols. The war between good and evil, is therefore a war between the icons and the idols.</p> <p>The icon of God leads the society to be reminded of Christian identity, and the idol of Satan brings a society to forgetfulness of this identity. As icons we constantly remind people of who they are to emulate — God — and who they are not to emulate — Satan. The idols do the exact opposite of this. The icons of Christ carry their cross, and so when men see them, they think of Christ, they think of His Cross and His zeal, His tenaciousness and valor, and learning from this, they deny the self. When people see somebody who is vile, who emulates the devil, and are influenced by this, they worship the self. This is why I do not like this idea that is constantly being touted today, the idea of “finding yourself.”</p> <p>Why should we find ourselves, when Christ commanded us to deny the self? In Christ we forget the self, saying with St. Paul, “it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20), becoming an icon, conveying to the world that their identity is not to be in themselves, but in Christ, that this life is a constant war, and for victory we are to cleanse the earth of idols. As the Apostle says, “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you” (1 Corinthians 6:19), to have the Holy Spirit is to be an icon of God. Humanity unto itself is an icon, and it is to be a temple of God, made in God’s image, but now it is filled with idols, and what are we to do — as emulators of Christ –but to take a whip and drive the idols out of God’s Temple? The men who make themselves into idols, are sellers of the human soul, giving them away to the devil, and it is the icon of God who purges the world of them.</p> <p>As icons, we fight the idols by creating beautiful art, art that teaches the Faith through wonder and majesty. Look to the Church, and you will see beautiful paintings and images of Crosses. Oh, how the devil’s hate such art, because they — with their immaculate imagery — instill in us a sense of Christian identity, and constantly remind us that we are in Christ, and are not to be dictated by the trends of this world. This is why the wicked and evil atheists and Muslims are always pushing for governments to censor any sort of Christian imagery and expression. They want us to be devoid of icons, to forget our hope, and to place our faith in idolatry of the self. I have heard people say that crosses, church bells, Christian paintings and statues, are idols.</p> <p>But the hatred against the icons is the real idolatry. For to make a society devoid of Christian imagery, is to enable the enemy to replace the icons with true idols, with the worship of celebrities, of buildings, of politicians, of false prophets. Man, by his very nature, venerates. Take away the icons and he will venerate himself, he will venerate other men, he will venerate Mammon, he will venerate the devil. But restore the holy icons and you will see Christendom revive. The icons will be everywhere, and even the least religious person will see it and feel within himself a small measure of awe, enough to compel him to express his gratitude to the One Who died for Him. Secrets Of The Elite: Why Forbes’s Rich List Doesn’t Include The Wealthiest Families On The Planet

<p>As Oxfam warns that global wealth inequality is spiraling out of control, we ask why the Rothschilds and Rockefellers are missing from the business magazine's definitive annual guide...with some startling revelations</p> <span>[embedded content]</span> <hr /> <p>This is a House of Rothschilds <a href="https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Q7MPAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA771&dq=%22let+us+control+the+money+of+a+country%22&hl=en" target="_blank">maxim</a>, widely attributed to banking tycoon Mayer Amschel <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayer_Amschel_Rothschild" target="_blank">Rothschild</a> in 1838 and said to be a founding principle for the highly corrupt banking and political system we have today.  Along with the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockefeller_family" target="_blank">Rockefellers</a>, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothschild_family" target="_blank">Rothschild</a> dynasty is estimated to be worth well over a trillion dollars. How are these powerful families linked to the ongoing crisis of global wealth inequality, why are so many people unaware of their existence, and why doesn’t Forbes ever mention them in their annual list of the world’s wealthiest people?</p> <h2><strong>Global wealth inequality is out of control, and it’s no accident</strong></h2> <p>In January 2014, Oxfam <a href="https://www.oxfam.org/sites/www.oxfam.org/files/bp-working-for-few-political-capture-economic-inequality-200114-summ-en.pdf" target="_blank">announced</a> that the richest 85 people on the planet share a combined wealth of $110 trillion. The figure was based on Forbes’s rich list 2013, and it equates to 65 times the total wealth of the entire bottom half (3.5 billion) of the world’s population. While some deluded commentators <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/what-this-one-percenter-says-about-the-worlds-poorest-3-5-billion-people-is-not-fantastic-news/" target="_blank">welcomed</a> this as “fantastic news,” the rest of us were disgusted. Winnie Byanyima, Oxfam’s executive director, said at the time: “It is staggering that in the 21st Century, half of the world’s population own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all fit comfortably on a double-decker bus.”</p> <p>Two months later, following Oxfam’s calculation and having published the new 2014 rich list, Forbes journalist Kasia Morena did some fact-checking. She <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/forbesinsights/2014/03/25/the-67-people-as-wealthy-as-the-worlds-poorest-3-5-billion/" target="_blank">found</a> that the number of billionaires owning the same as the poorest 3.5 billion had dropped from 85 to 67: which demonstrates an enormous widening of the global inequality gap in just one year.</p> <p>Fast-forward to 2015, and another Oxfam <a href="http://www.oxfamamerica.org/press/richest-1-will-own-more-than-all-the-rest-by-2016/" target="_blank">investigation</a>. The anti-poverty charity warned in January that if nothing is done to tackle global wealth inequality- by forcing corporations to pay their taxes and closing off-shore tax havens, for example- <strong>the richest 1% will own more than everybody else in the world combined by 2016. </strong>In a <a href="http://www.oxfamamerica.org/explore/research-publications/wealth-having-it-all-and-wanting-more/" target="_blank">paper</a> called <em>Wealth: Having it all and wanting more</em>, Oxfam outlined how the richest 1 percent have seen their share of global wealth increase from 44% in 2009 to 48% in 2014, and will likely surpass 50% in 2016<strong>.</strong> Winnie Byanyima again <a href="http://www.oxfamamerica.org/press/richest-1-will-own-more-than-all-the-rest-by-2016/" target="_blank">warned</a> that the explosion in inequality is holding back the fight against global poverty at a time when one in nine people do not have enough to eat, and more than a billion people still live on less than $1.25 a day.</p> <p>The organization also outlined how 20 percent of billionaires around the world have interests in the financial and insurance sectors, a group that saw their cash wealth increase by 11 percent in the last 12 months. Billionaires listed as having interests in the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/ex-big-pharma-sales-rep-exposes-the-sinister-industry-killing-americans/" target="_blank">pharmaceutical</a> and <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/this-search-shows-you-if-when-and-how-much-your-doctor-is-paid-by-big-pharma/" target="_blank">healthcare</a> sectors saw their collective net worth increase by 47 percent, and the industry spent more than $500 million <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/oil-companies-spent-over-38-million-on-lobbying-last-year/" target="_blank">lobbying</a> policy makers in Washington and Brussels in 2013 alone.</p> <p>“Do we really want to live in a world where the one percent own more than the rest of us combined?” Byanyima <a href="http://www.oxfamamerica.org/press/richest-1-will-own-more-than-all-the-rest-by-2016/" target="_blank">asked</a>. “The scale of global inequality is quite simply staggering, and despite the issues shooting up the global agenda, the gap between the richest and the rest is widening fast.”</p> <h2><strong>Meet the people who own 50% (and counting) of the world’s wealth</strong></h2> <p>Here is Forbes’s (<a href="http://www.forbes.com/billionaires/list/#version:realtime" target="_blank">real-time</a>) list of the 66 billionaires who (officially) own half of all global assets, and will soon own more than the rest of Earth’s seven billion population <em>combined</em>. They range from CEOs of large corporations to oil and gas tycoons and Silicon valley entrepreneurs. The list details name, net worth, percentage change since the 2015 results, their age, industry and nationality. <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/dear-bill-gates-please-care-as-much-about-our-planet-as-you-do-about-immunization/" target="_blank">Bill</a> <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/bill-gates-wants-worlds-poor-to-drink-human-faeces-and-everyone-thinks-thats-ok/" target="_blank">Gates</a> is ranked first at $469 billion, and James Simons at #66 with the $14 billion he made from hedge funds.</p> <p>But where are the world’s <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/royal-family-furious-about-leaked-video-of-queen-doing-nazi-salute-as-a-child/" target="_blank">Royal</a> families? In this way, the real people pulling the strings are able to work in absolute secrecy without any media attention at all (unless it is carefully-constructed <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/9300205/Rothschild-and-Rockefeller-their-family-fortunes.html" target="_blank">positive</a> <a href="http://www.spectator.co.uk/spectator-life/spectator-life-culture/9232521/full-house/" target="_blank">propaganda</a>, like this article on the <a href="http://www.jpost.com/Features/In-Thespotlight/Lord-Rothschild-reveals-vast-charity-work" target="_blank">philanthropy</a> of the Rothschilds, of course). Forbes’s policy to exclude heads of state from the rich list explains why the Queen of England is absent, although nobody has the slightest idea of her wealth in any case: her shareholdings remain hidden behind Bank of England Nominee accounts. As the Guardian newspaper <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2002/may/30/jubilee.monarchy2" target="_blank">reported</a> in May 2002: ‘The reason for the wild variations in valuations of her private wealth can be pinned on the secrecy over her portfolio of share investments…Her subjects have no way of knowing through a public register of interests where she, as their head of state, chooses to invest her money. Unlike [British politicians and Lords], the Queen does not have to annually declare her interests and as a result her subjects cannot question her or know about potential conflicts of interests…’</p> <p>The same can be said for the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/the-house-of-rothschild-the-moneys-prophets/" target="_blank">Rothschilds</a> and <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/16-conspiracy-theories-that-turned-out-to-be-true/" target="_blank">Rockerfellers</a>, whose European forebears were richer than any Royal family at the time. The families are believed to have set up and own the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/money-banking-and-the-federal-reserve-system/" target="_blank">Federal</a> <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/gab_gallery/the-federal-reserve-a-privately-owned-corporation/" target="_blank">Reserve</a> (G Edward Griffin’s <em>The Creature From Jekyll Island</em> and this <a href="http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-federal-reserve-cartel-the-eight-families/25080" target="_blank">research</a> by journalist Dean Henderson are recommended reading if you want to get deeper into this topic). Could this be why the families, whose power in manipulating global affairs for the past few hundred years cannot be <a href="http://www.therichest.com/business/5-lesser-known-facts-about-the-rothschild-family/?view=all" target="_blank">underestimated</a>, are protected by Forbes’s ‘don’t even go there’ policy? Retired management consultant Gaylon Ross Sr, author of <em>Who’s Who of the Global Elite</em>, was apparently told in 1998 that the combined wealth of the Rockefeller family was approx $11 trillion and the Rothschilds $100 trillion…what might that figure have reached 17 years later? One can hardly begin to imagine, but maybe money isn’t the most important thing to your average trillionaire, anyway…</p> <p>“The only problem with wealth is, what do you do with it?” was a rhetorical question <a href="http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/j/john_d_rockefeller.html" target="_blank">posed</a> by none other than John D. Rockefeller. Well, if Aaron Russo’s testimony is to be believed, all the Rockefeller riches in the world certainly won’t be used to benefit the human race…</p> <p><strong>Russo’s Rockefeller revelations: False flags, power grabs, and an enslaved population</strong></p> <p>Russo, a film-maker and activist who directed America: <a href="http://freedomtofascism.com/" target="_blank">From Freedom to Fascism</a>, claimed that Nick Rockefeller told him about ‘an event that would allow us to invade Afghanistan and Iraq’ some eleven months before 9/11, and foretold the fact that the ‘War on Terror’ would be a <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/statues-destroyed-in-isis-videos-are-confirmed-fake/" target="_blank">hoax</a> wherein soldiers would be looking in caves for non-existent enemies (see video). In the interview, Russo claims that he first met lawyer Nick Rockefeller after being introduced by a mutual attorney friend. The two men hit it off, and later down the line Rockefeller apparently confided in Russo privately what his family had planned for the world: never-ending <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/un-commissioner-says-war-on-terror-is-laying-waste-to-human-rights/" target="_blank">war</a>, global population <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/royal-society-believes-depopulation-will-save-the-environment/" target="_blank">reduction</a>, economic <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/economic-collapse-in-greece-is-finally-sinking-into-the-consciousness-of-its-citizens/" target="_blank">collapse</a>, widespread chaos and disorder on such a scale that people would actually welcome the ultimate ‘solution’: a one-world government. He was speaking in October 2000, and most of his predictions have now come to pass- including <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/fox-news-deleted-report-in-wake-of-911-israeli-spies-could-be-linked-to-attacks/" target="_blank">9/11</a> and the subsequent War on <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/bushs-911-lies-a-complilation/" target="_blank">Terror</a>.</p> <p>Russo claimed that Rockefeller asked him to be on the Council For Foreign Relations (CFR), but the man who spent his career fighting for freedom and exposing the Fed Reserve supposedly told Rockefeller that he couldn’t possibly go along with these sinister plans for mankind. “As much as I like you Nick, I don’t believe in enslaving people. We’re on opposite sides of the fence,” Russo told Nick. To which Rockefeller apparently replied: “Why do you care about those people? Take care of your own life; do the best you can for you and your family.” Russo concludes: “There was just a lack of caring; it was just cold.”</p> <p>He goes on, “I used to say what the point, Nick? You have all the money in the world, you have all the power in the world, whats the end goal?” Rockefeller is said to have responded bluntly: “To get everyone <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/man-arrested-for-microwaving-his-id-to-fry-the-microchip-and-protect-his-privacy/" target="_blank">chipped</a>.” According to this theory, the families who own the banking system are bored of their wealth, it is no longer enough. To control <em>society</em> <em>itself</em> is the ultimate end-game. According to Russo, Rockefeller told him that a global government would slowly phase out paper money from circulation, with its eventual aim being to <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/ibm-unveils-microchip-based-on-the-human-brain/" target="_blank">microchip</a> the population, turning us all into slaves of the NWO.</p> <p>These are wild claims indeed, and from a journalistic point of view, they cannot be verified one way or the other. But it’s worth noting that just before Russo died in August 2007, he filmed a moving message to all Americans. In it, he talked about how vital it is for people to continue to resist national ID cards and microchips, and fight for their individual freedoms against those who would enslave us. It’s also worth pointing out that it’s not only activists like Russo and scare-mongering patriots like Alex Jones who have tried to ‘out’ the Rothschilds and Rockefellers. The problem is, all those who do so are silenced.</p> <p>Ashley Mote, a member of the European Parliament serving British independence party UKIP, asked the following question in Brussels, and retribution was swift: “Mr President, I wish to draw your attention to the Global Security Fund, set up in the early 1990s under the auspices of Jacob Rothschild. This is a Brussels-based fund and it is no ordinary fund: it does not trade, it is not listed and it has a totally different purpose. It is being used for geopolitical engineering purposes, apparently under the guidance of the intelligence services. I have previously asked about the alleged involvement of the European Union’s own intelligence resources in the management of slush funds in offshore accounts, and I still await a reply. To that question I now add another: what are the European Union’s connections to the Global Security Fund and what relationship does it have with European Union institutions?”</p> <p>This is exactly the kind of question the European public would like an answer to. Yet Mote did not receive one. Instead, the 79 year old politician was sacked from his own party, and later <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-33508850" target="_blank">arrested</a> and sent to jail for allegedly claiming false expenses during his time as an MEP. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) today issued an Order filing and simultaneously settling charges against Coinflip, Inc. d/b/a Derivabit (Coinflip) and its chief executive officer Francisco Riordan for conducting activity related to commodity options transactions without complying with the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and CFTC Regulations, specifically, by operating a facility for the trading or processing of commodity options without complying with the CEA or CFTC Regulations otherwise applicable to swaps or conducting the activity pursuant to the CFTC’s exemption for trade options. Bitcoin was first popularized by the gaming community and then was later thrust into the global spotlight when it was utilized in a variety of underground markets. Given the anonymous, peer-to-peer nature of Bitcoin, it is technically physically impossible to regulate. However, over the past few years the federal government has been developing relationships with some of the big players in the Bitcoin industry, and unfortunately, many of them are selling out. Their unpolished campaign sought to draw attention to financial inequality. To healthcare issues. And to the problem of student debt.</p> <p>If that sounds familiar, it is because four years on, Bernie Sanders’s own campaign has highlighted many of the same grievances. It is no coincidence. In 2015 many of the protesters who cut their teeth in the Occupy encampments are now campaigning for the Democratic candidate.</p> <p>“There’s 50 million people who are impoverished here in America,” said Stan Williams, an Occupy Wall Street stalwart who is now co-organiser of African Americans for Bernie.</p> <p>“He talks about the 99%. He talks about the 1%. So a lot of the things he talks about resonate with me.”</p> <p>Occupy Wall Street sparked a nationwide movement in the US. Thousands of people camped in parks, outside capitol buildings and elsewhere while tens of thousands more took part in marches. A central theme was the perceived feather-handed treatment of banks and bankers who had contributed to the financial crisis, while conditions remained the same or worsened for regular citizens.</p> <p>In New York, hundreds of people camped out in Zuccotti Park, a block away from Wall Street, and thousands took part in a series of marches throughout the city. Police across the US were frequently criticised for their attempts to control protesters. Videos emerged of peaceful demonstrators being teargassed in Seattle, Oakland, at UC Davis in California and in New York City – where one march saw more than 700 people arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge.</p> <p>The Occupy movement quickly spread to countries across the globe including the UK, Brazil, Hong Kong and Australia, although the majority of the camps shut down towards the end of 2011.</p> <p>At the time, Occupy protesters were criticised by some sections of the media for their lack of specific demands. But four years later protesters say the movement’s unorthodox style of campaigning has laid the groundwork for Sanders’s success, while Occupy’s network of activists are proving a major boon to what is a relatively impoverished campaign.</p> <p>“He doesn’t have a big staff. He can’t afford to have the staff Hillary Clinton has,” Williams said. Williams was living in Alabama in September 2011 and moved to New York to be part of the movement. Williams now uses some of the skills he learned as an occupier to reach out to ethnic minority communities in a bid to spread Sanders’s message.</p> <p>“The grassroots groups have far surpassed what he and his campaign could ever do. And since people who are involved in Occupy are leading the biggest group for Bernie Sanders, our fingers are all over this.”</p> <p>Sanders announced his run for the Democratic nomination in May. A relative unknown then, the self-described democratic socialist has seen some of the most enthusiastic support of either Democratic or Republican candidates. More than 15,000 people turned up to a rally in Los Angeles in August, while a Portland event attracted 19,000.</p> <p>The 73-year-old took the lead over Hillary Clinton in an Iowa poll for the first time in early September and leads the former secretary of state in New Hampshire.</p> <p>But that success could not have happened were it not for the Occupy movement, said Charles Lenchner. He was involved in “TechOps” – a group of web-savvy occupiers who created websites and managed other technical aspects that helped give the movement its wide reach.</p> <p>“Sanders’s rise in this election season is inconceivable without Occupy Wall Street having elevated the conversation around inequality and the way that the 1% are ravaging this country. You just can’t imagine one without the other.”</p> <p>Lenchner co-founded People for Bernie Sanders, a group which supports the Vermont senator but that is unconnected to his campaign.</p> <p>Another member of that group is Brett Banditelli, who serves as national digital organiser. Banditelli co-founded Occupy Harrisburg, a group that stayed camped outside Pennsylvania’s capitol building for more than a year before retiring in November 2012. He said Sanders’s support was boosted by the network of activist groups Occupy helped to establish across the country.</p> <p>“There were hundreds of digital assets and small groups before Bernie even made his speech on the Vermont lake,” Banditelli said. “That was because a lot of occupiers and a lot of community activists across the country came out.”</p> <p>If Sanders’s popularity could not have happened without Occupy, his platform also appears to have given occupiers a sense of purpose. He has also succeeded in drawing a notoriously disaffected group that had turned its back on traditional politics into participating in the political process.</p> <p>“When we were in Occupy there was a lot of time arguing over should we vote or not. Now, that debate’s over. The Seattle School Board said the union was asking for $172 million in increased funding, nearly three times what it could afford. The employees’ union, the Seattle Education Association, wanted a significant wage increase to recruit and retain quality educators; members have gone six years without a cost-of-living adjustment. A new teacher earning $44,372 annually in Seattle would spend nearly two-thirds of his or her take-home pay on the median rent of $1,858 in the city.</p> <p>The union settled for smaller wage increases — about 10 percent over three years — than it initially sought, but it claimed victory because the school board agreed to nearly every other demand. The Seattle teachers prevailed because they made the strike about much more than wages. It is part of a greater struggle over the future of America’s cities: whether they become semiprivatized playgrounds for elite professionals or can thrive on different communities, classes and ideas democratically co-existing.</p> <p>The battle over who controls Seattle is intimately linked to who controls public education. In 2012, what Valerie Strauss in The Washington Post called a “who’s who of billionaires” — including members of the Walton family (heirs to the Walmart fortune) and Seattle titans Bill Gates of Microsoft, Jeff Bezos of Amazon and venture capitalist and liberal darling Nick Hanauer — funded a measure to open 40 taxpayer-funded charter schools in Washington. Days before the teachers went on strike, the state Supreme Court ruled the charter schools violated the state constitution by funneling public money to a privately run enterprise.</p> <p>The court slapped the legislature with a $100,000-a-day fine because in 2012 it found that lawmakers were shirking their constitutional duty to close a chronic funding gap between wealthy and poor school districts. (Some suggested that the Walton and Gates families, with a combined net worth of $235 billion, could fund the charter schools with their pocket change.)</p> <p>This assault on public education in Seattle and nationwide is the context for the strike. In May teachers throughout Washington state staged one-day walkouts to protest the legislature’s dithering over school funding. The Seattle teachers’ union knew it needed public support to launch a strike against powerful political and economic elites, so it linked workplace issues­ — workloads, fair evaluations and pay — to community issues such as funding and stronger student education and well-being. It is a strategy known as social justice unionism and takes a page from the playbook of successful teacher organizing in Chicago and Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon.</p> <p>Demands include fewer standardized tests and new social equity teams to address biases, such as suspension rates for black children in Seattle schools four times as high as for white kids. Teachers also want at least 30 minutes for recess, since schools in poorer areas have reduced playtime to as little as 15 minutes. And they’re asking for more counselors and psychologists to reduce caseloads as high as 400 students per employee.</p> <p>The Seattle School Board eventually agreed to all these demands, after rejecting them before the strike, but it isn’t the one calling the shots. Power rests with money — Bill Gates, the Waltons and billionaire Eli Broad, who have spent billions of dollars trying to demolish public education and teachers’ unions nationwide. They have done this through foundations and the charter school movement and have received help from many politicians, pundits and the American Legislative Exchange Council, an organization of conservative legislators and private-sector representatives that pushes legislation at the state and local level.</p> <p>This privatization scheme adheres to basic capitalist logic. The plutocrats have shaped the winner-take-all economy in Seattle, where a few grab most of the income and remaining residents scramble for trickle-down benefits, even as the flood of money swamps them with rising living costs. Seattle is one of the wealthiest metropolitan areas in the world with 88,000 millionaires among 3.6 million people. Elected officials leave no corporation behind, whether it’s giving $8.7 billion in tax incentives to Boeing or allowing Amazon to transform Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood into a hip amenity-rich enclave for thousands of its “brogrammers.”</p> <p>For everyone else in Seattle, life gets harder and harder. Even Mayor Ed Murray described it as “economic apartheid.” Since 2010, rents have shot up 70 percent, leaving half of renters rent stressed and threatening to erase the move toward a $15-an-hour minimum wage in the city. With no state income tax, Washington has the most regressive tax structure in the nation, with the poorest 20 percent shelling out seven times as much of their income, by percentage, in state and local taxes as the top 1 percent. In 2010, Microsoft and Amazon helped defeat a state income tax on the 1 percent, the same group that gobbled up 59 percent of income growth from 1979 to 2007.</p> <p>Seattle has a serious racism problem. Its police are under a Justice Department consent decree for unconstitutional use of force as well as “serious concerns” about discriminatory policing. In 2012 voters in King County, which encompasses Seattle, approved $210 million for a 144-bed prison for its juvenile system, in which black youths account for 42 percent of incarcerated minors — five times African-Americans’ percentage of the city’s population. The city is 70 percent white and getting whiter, thanks to the tech boom. But its public school enrollment is majority minority, with 35 percent of white children going to private schools. The reliance on irregular funding mechanisms like bonds and levies has left Seattle with inadequate mass transit, which poorer and browner households increasingly depend on as they get pushed out to the margins.</p> <p>Schools pay the highest price for this state of affairs. Since 1975 Washington’s Supreme Court has ruled repeatedly that state “funding is not ample, it is not stable, and it is not dependable,” as constitutionally required. In 2006 it was found that student transportation was underfunded by at least $93 million a year. The reliance on special levies, unsurprisingly, has little effect on wealthier school districts while starving poorer ones of minimum funding. There are an estimated 2,100 homeless children in Seattle’s school system, and the real number may be significantly higher.</p> <p>It took the courts 40 years to get to this point, and the billionaires are plotting their next moves, possibly including a special legislative session to rescue the charter schools. A “just transition” away from fossil fuels wouldn’t pit workers against the planet. Those displaced should be able to count on decent new green jobs and retraining.</p> <p>“There’s a Superfund for dirt,” Mazzocchi <a href="http://www.labornotes.org/2007/12/book-review-tony-mazzocchi-man-who-never-sold-out" rel="nofollow">used to say</a>. “There ought to be one for workers.”</p> <p><strong>Shell No?</strong></p> <p>As Shell Oil’s drilling rig and ice cutter churned toward the Arctic, activists in Seattle and Portland, paddling kayaks and dangling from cables, tried to block them. Some unions backed the protests, but not the usually progressive Longshore Workers (ILWU).</p> <p>Servicing Shell’s fleet will provide “an awful lot of family-wage jobs,” said Justin Hirsch, an ILWU Local 19 executive board member—at a time when condo developers are eyeing the waterfront and longshore jobs are squeezed by shipping industry consolidation.</p> <p>Don’t get him wrong. Hirsch also says “climate change is a massive issue, and it’s going to have to be dealt with by labor.”</p> <p>But he’s worried the shift to a green economy offers employers an opportunity to destroy the pay, benefits, and workplace control it took generations of struggle to achieve. Will green jobs be lower-waged and nonunion?</p> <p><strong>Right Side of History</strong></p> <p>“You’re either at the table or you’re on the menu,” says Steve Garey, recently retired from the Tesoro oil refinery in Anacortes, Washington, and the presidency of Steelworkers Local 12-591. He wants a voice for fossil fuel workers—separate from their employers—in the changes to come.</p> <p>“Like any other conversation, it’s going to start with ‘What’s in it for me?’ and ‘What’s harmful for me?’” Garey says. “And at some point I think you have to get beyond the ‘me’ part, beyond the end of your own nose, and consider what’s the greatest good for the greatest number of working people.”</p> <p><a href="http://commonsenseeconomics.net/" rel="nofollow">He points out</a> even biofuels will need refining. A few years ago Tesoro looked into making jet fuel from a flax-like plant, camelina.</p> <p>Though it never panned out, “our members in Anacortes got quite excited,” Garey said. “It generated quite a bit of discussion. I think they really liked the idea of being on the right side of history.”</p> <p>Such conversations are the order of the day—both inside unions, and between labor and other movements, as in a series of conferences bringing together rail workers and environmentalists. (<a href="http://www.railroadconference.org/" rel="nofollow">The next one is in Chicago</a>, September 19.)</p> <p>“You can’t fix climate change by yourself,” Garey says. “It’s not like the work we traditionally do in our unions where we protect someone’s job or get them a raise. It forces you to work with other progressive-minded people.”</p> <p><strong>Prisons and HMOs</strong></p> <p>Mazzocchi applied the “just transition” principle to other social changes, too.</p> <p>A single-payer health care advocate, he acknowledged that <a href="http://www.laborstandard.org/Election/Mazzocchi_Speech_at_Green_Convention.htm" rel="nofollow">shutting down private insurance</a> would mean lost jobs—the flip side of the cost savings that makes universal care viable. He backed a salary and paid college tuition for those displaced.</p> <p>The same principle could apply to mass incarceration, an issue the AFL-CIO has begun highlighting. In member trainings it points out that the U.S. is <a href="http://commonsenseeconomics.net/" rel="nofollow">the world’s biggest jailer</a>, and that there’s a stark racial divide in who gets locked up.</p> <p>Labor wouldn’t have to fear prison closings that included a just transition for corrections workers, who often live in hard-hit areas where union jobs are desperately needed.</p> <p>As Mazzocchi once put it, the transformation to a better society “cannot be rhetorical.
