Former U.S. Senator Bob Dole has died Sunday morning at 98 years old.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep,” the Elizabeth Dole Foundation said in a statement Sunday. “At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years.”

In addition to serving in the Army in World War II and as senator for Kansas for decades, he was also the 1996 GOP presidential nominee against President Bill Clinton.

From CBS News:

Dole received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1997 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2018 for his lifelong dedication to public service. He thanked his colleagues, “for without them, nothing would have been accomplished.”

Bob Dole said he was living proof that America is a land with out limits, and he pushed those limits from the Kansas prairie of his youth to the great corridors of power where he spent so much of his life — one of the last of that World War II generation whose values and courage had so much to do with shaping the America of today.

Dole was also a supporter of former President Donald Trump, having endorsed his policies on several occasions.

From Breitbart:

Though seen as an establishment figure, Dole supported President Donald Trump — not uncritically, but with admiration for Trump’s policies and his achievements in office. In 2017, Dole openly praised Trump’s first trip to Europe, including his speech in Warsaw on the need to defend western civilization. During the 2020 presidential election, Dole spoke out in Trump’s defense against the Commission on Presidential Debates, saying that it appeared to be biased against the president.
