Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is promising children this fall will carry on as normal at Florida schools, where face masks will be banned.

“We look forward to this upcoming year to be a normal school year,” DeSantis said Thursday, adding he wants them to “live like normal and learn like normal kids.”
If a federal mask mandate is imposed, it won’t supersede state law, DeSantis noted.
“There’s been talk about potentially people advocating at the federal level imposing compulsory masks on kids. We’re not doing that in Florida, okay? We need our kids to breathe.”
The pro-Trump governor highlighted the ridiculousness of forcing children to obstruct their breathing with a “muzzle” while at school, and blasted Dr. Anthony Fauci for wanting to mask three-year-olds.
“At the end of the day we got to start putting our kids first. We got to look out for their education. Is it really comfortable? Is it really healthy for them to be muzzled and have their breathing obstructed all day long in school?”
“I don’t think it is. And…look…I have a three-year-old son. You got people like Fauci saying he should be muzzled. That you should be throwing masks on these three-year-old kids. It’s totally unacceptable.”
Responding to DeSantis’ statements, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said it was “concerning” the state would be ignoring federal mask guidance.
“If I were a parent in Florida, that would be greatly concerning to me because kids under the age of 12 are not vaccinated. They’re not eligible yet,” Psaki said.
“But that puts kids at risk, it’s not aligned with public health guidelines. We know masks are not the most comfortable thing. I will say, my kids are quite adjusted to them, as I know many kids are. So certainly, we would have concern about any step that doesn’t abide by public health guidelines and we think it puts people at greater risk.”
