The Biden administration has deleted government accountability reports from federal websites detailing the cost and number of weaponry and equipment the federal government provided to the Afghan army over the last two decades.
A 2017 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that was deleted showed that between 2003 and 2016, the U.S. government supplied 75,898 vehicles and 208 aircraft to the Afghan army.
“One deleted GAO report was four years old and quantified U.S.-provided gear into Afghanistan between 2003 and 2016. It was delivered to the House Armed Services Committee on August 10, 2017. The report was pulled down only hours after we, and other news outlets like Sinclair Broadcast Group, highlighted the report’s existence,” Forbes reported.
A GAO spokesperson admitted the agency took down the report.
“The State Department requested we temporarily remove and review reports on Afghanistan to protect recipients of US assistance that may be identified through our reports and thus subject to retribution.”
A State Department spokesperson confirmed the report concerning weapon and equipment transfers to Afghanistan was scrubbed earlier this week, claiming it was to protect Afghan allies.
“The safety of our Afghan contacts is of utmost importance to us. The State Department advised other federal agencies of to [sic] review their web properties for content that highlights cooperation/participation between an Afghan citizen and the USG or a USG partner and remove from public view if it poses a security risk.”
A 2020 Special Inspector General For Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) report detailing the audit of ScanEagle drones was also deleted from its website, according to a SIGAR spokesperson.
“In recent days, some SIGAR reports have been temporarily removed from the agency’s public website due to ongoing security concerns in accordance with guidance received from the U.S. Department of State. This is in line with actions taken by other U.S. federal agencies and is out of an abundance of caution.”
This comes as about $85 billion of U.S. military weapons, vehicles, and equipment fell into the hands of the Taliban amid Joe Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.
