recriminalize-sodomy

In a new and surprising story out of Michigan, the Michigan State Senate just cleared a bill that will now move to the house. While the bill is written to address primary animal cruelty, it has an added provision that if this bill is passed, it will re-criminalize sodomy as a felony withe the possibility of life in prison. The entire text of the bill can be read on the Michigan State Legislature website, but the passage in question is as follows:

A person who commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature either with mankind or with any animal is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 15 years, or if the defendant was a sexually delinquent person at the time, a felony punishable by imprisonment for an indeterminate term, the minimum of which shall be 1 day and the maximum of which shall be life.

The gay publications are already saying this law does not matter because of Lawrence v. Texas that abolished sodomy laws in Texas in 2003. However, given the rise in states’ right movements, most notably with Colorado’s near complete defiance of Federal drug laws concerning marijuana, there is a clear reason this bill is being watched, since it is possible there may be changes coming to the state of MI.
