“We have serious grounds to suspect intensive preparations by Turkey for a military invasion on the territory of the sovereign state of Syria,” Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, a defense ministry spokesman, told Lebanon’s Al-Manar News. “We are recording more and more signs of concealed preparations by the Turkish military.”

In a written statement, Konashenkov said that the Russian military claimed the infrastructure could be used for moving troops, ammunition and weapons.

“Maybe, in peacetime, these facts would indicate the expectation of trade turnover growth between the neighboring countries,” Konashenkov said. “However, during wartime, in such a way the transport infrastructure is preparing on the eve of military intervention.”

Konashenkov’s incriminations came one day after Russia accused Turkey of violating the Treaty on Open Skies. This international treaty allows unarmed aerial observation over some of the three dozen countries that are participating — including the United States, Russia and Turkey.

This entire ordeal is truly startling — if the Muslim-dominated Turkey goes to war against Syria, it could spark a major uprising in the surrounding Islamic countries. Some will accuse Turkey — perhaps accurately — of attempting to regain its place as the leader of an international caliphate.

If so, it could be only a matter of time before the warfare is westward bound.
