In another series of shocking revelations continuing since last year with the discovery of ISIS dungeons used for caging prisoners and raping captives first reported by the UK Daily Mail, a new series of torture chambers has been uncovered, this time in the desert. Via the UK Daily Mail:

Manhole-like panels in the northern Syrian desert are the only obvious clue of the horrific prison where the persecuted women were made to lie in complete darkness for hours every day.

The women, from the much-persecuted Yazidi minority, were forced to live their entire lives under the sand; eating, drinking and sleeping in their tiny cells.

While this article references the Yazidis specifically because world governments, especially the US government, refuses speak about the genocide of the ‘Iraqi Christians, there is no doubt that as many and more Christian women were held as prisoner and raped continually in these same cages (all photos credit to the UK Daily Mail):

The article continued:

It is not yet known what happened to the terrified women, or where they might be now.

But in heart-breaking examples of the hope and despair the women must have felt, drawings on the walls document their daily lives under the sand.

They are systematically targeting men, women and children based on their ethnic, religious or sectarian affiliation and are ruthlessly carrying out widespread ethnic and religious cleansing in the areas under their control.’

Most likely, these women are dead or sex slaves and have been and/or are being raped over-and-over without mercy. And many of them are Christians, and it is because they are Christian that they have been made to suffer in this way, as the Quran notes (4:23-24):

Forbidden to you are your mothers and your daughters and your sisters and your paternal aunts and your maternal aunts and brothers’ daughters and sisters’ daughters and your mothers that have suckled you and your foster-sisters and mothers of your wives and your step-daughters who are in your guardianship, of your wives to whom you have gone in, but if you have not gone in to them, there is no blame on you, and the wives of your sons who are of your own loins and that you should have two sisters together, except what has already passed; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

And all married women except those whom your right hands possess (is) Allah’s ordinance to you, and lawful for you are (all women) besides those, provided that you seek (them) with your property, taking (them) in marriage not committing fornication. Then as to those whom you profit by, give them their dowries as appointed; and there is no blame on you about what you mutually agree after what is appointed; surely Allah is Knowing, Wise.

And whoever among you has not within his power ampleness of means to marry free believing women, then of those whom your right hands possess from among your believing maidens; and Allah knows best your faith: you are the one from the other; so marry them with the permission of their masters, and give them their dowries justly, they being chaste, not fornicating, nor receiving paramours; and when they are taken in marriage, then if they are guilty of indecency, they shall suffer half the punishment which is upon free women. This is for him among you who fears falling into evil; and that you abstain is better for you, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

And for the context in Islamic sacred tradition, from Abu Dawud’s Sunan (#2150):

The Apostle of Allah sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them. They defeated them and took them captives. Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur’anic verse: “And all married women (are forbidden) unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess.” That is to say, they are lawful for them when they complete their waiting period.
