Scottish Philosopher  Thomas Carlyle called the Media the “Fourth Estate” of society. This refers to the traditional Medieval division of society- there was originally the estates of the king/nobles/government (“first estate”), Catholic Church (“second estate”), and common people (“third estate”). The logic behind this division was that the “second estate” served as a buffer between the “first” and “third” estates. It essentially was a unifying and brokering force, that while at times was abused by both the ruling class and the common people, it prevented either one from subjugating the other to extreme, dangerous, or arbitrary movements or ideas.

The Second Estate was always a target of attack by monarchs for this very reason. This is well attested to by the many controversies of Medieval times, such as the Investiture Controversy or the martyrdom of St. Thomas Becket. The first great effort to remove the Second Estate was in the Protestant Movement- one may even argue that while religious matters were clearly a point of contention, this was for members of the First Estate an attempt at a power consolidation at the expense of the Third Estate. This is seen no more clearly in the English Reformation, when Henry VIII made himself head of the Church in England. This act merged the First and Second Estates together and fully put the common people under the yoke of his will and much to their misery and oppression, as Protestant author William Cobbett argued in Chapter 7 of his book A History of the Reformation in England and Ireland:

The situation of the country, I suppose, at the time when he wrote; and, though the “reformation” had not then produced pauperism and misery and DEBT and taxes equal to the present, it was on the way to do it. But what does he mean by “public riches”? The Catholic institutions “provided against the pressure of want amongst the people”; but prevented the increase of “public riches”! What, again I ask, is the meaning of the words, “public riches”? What is, or ought to be, the end of all government and of every institution? Why, the happiness of the people. But this man sees, like ADAM SMITH, and indeed, like almost every Scotch writer, to have a notion, that there may be great public good, though producing individual misery. They seem always to regard the people as so many cattle, working for an indescribable something that they call “the “public.” The question with them, is, not whether the people, for whose good all government is instituted, be well off, or wretched; but, whether, the “public” gain, or lose, money or money’s worth. I am able to show, and I shall show, that England was a greater country before the “reformation” than since; that it was greater positively and relatively; that its real wealth was greater. But, what we have, at present, to observe, is, that thus far, at any rate, the reformation had produced general misery amongst the common people; and that, accordingly, complaints were heard from one end of the kingdom to the other.

George Soros’ group for funding anti-Christian revolutions

Thomas Carlyle coined the term “Fourth Estate” in his book On Heroes and Hero Worship in reference to how in the English Parliament all Three Estates were represented (although one might argue only two) plus the Media. The danger of the Media is that while it can provide an important service in a society through informing people about matters of importance, it is ultimately funded by men of power who constitute the First Estate. Thus unless the person who is funding a particular media outlet has moral and righteous beliefs that he follows and will enforce in his business, the Media quickly can become another tool to manipulate and abuse the common people. As former New York Times Editor John Swinton famously said:

There is no such a thing in America as an independent press, unless it is out in country towns. You are all slaves. You know it, and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to express an honest opinion. If you expressed it, you would know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid $150 for keeping honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for doing similar things. If I should allow honest opinions to be printed in one issue of my paper, I would be like Othello before twenty-four hours: my occupation would be gone. The man who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the street hunting for another job. The business of a New York journalist is to distort the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to villify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread, or for what is about the same — his salary. You know this, and I know it; and what foolery to be toasting an “Independent Press”! We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are jumping-jacks. They pull the string and we dance. Our time, our talents, our lives, our possibilities, are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

One such examples of this is billionaire George Soros, who became rich by engaging in immoral and legally questionable hedge fund and currency trading which, among other acts, caused the destruction of the British Sterling in 1992 and forced its replacement with the pound. An avowed socialist and misanthrope, Mr. Soros has funded and continues to fund groups through his Open Society Foundation, which while claiming to “promote democracy,” has been at the center of many revolutions that have taken place across the world and movements aimed at the religious, cultural, and ethnic destruction of the United States and Europe, of which the most recent project is supporting the Muslim “migration” to Europe taking place right now,

Fortunately, some people and governments have taken note of Mr. Soros’ activities and have been driving out his groups. Russia recently banned the Open Society Forum, and Poland is currently undertaking changes to its laws that will greatly restrict the OSF’s ability to operate, to which the OSF has naturally complained and called “undemocratic.” From the OSF:

Worrying trends have already emerged in a number of other governmental announcements. For example, plans are afoot to nationalize all media and focus their role on promoting national values. This may result in purging from the existing public broadcaster anyone who disagrees with official positions. PiS is also planning major changes in education, including rolling back school reforms.

Poland has refused to take in Muslim refugees and has been proclaiming boldly its Catholic heritage against threats from the EU and specifically, its German neighbor. This is another step in the right direction for that nation. Pray that Poland continues to seek  God’s guidance and stand firm in her Faith in Christ.
