The White House and congressional Democrats are reeling from Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.V.) Sunday announcement that he would not vote for Joe Biden’s $5 trillion Build Back Better bill.
The Biden administration was reportedly “blindsided” by Manchin’s announcement, and WH press secretary Jen Psaki released a statement slamming the West Virginia senator for reneging on a deal with Biden.
NEWS: White House feels blindsided by @Sen_JoeManchin’s decision that he’s a “no” on Build Back Better.
Just days ago, Manchin personally handed @POTUS a $1.8 trillion plan he would support, I’m told.
In interview with @BretBaier today, Manchin said “I can’t get there.”

“If his comments on FOX and written statement indicate an end to that effort, they represent a sudden and inexplicable reversal in his position, and a breach of his commitments to the President and the Senator’s colleagues in the House and Senate,” Psaki said.

“Just as Senator Manchin reversed his position on Build Back Better this morning, we will continue to press him to see if he will reverse his position yet again, to honor his prior commitments and be true to his word.”
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), charged with quarterbacking the bill’s massive multi-trillion dollar budget, accused Manchin of lacking the “guts” to stand up to “powerful special interests.”

Far-left “Squad” leader Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y) criticized the Democrat leadership for not listening to her about passing Build Back Better and the infrastructure bill together.
“When a handful of us in the House warned this would happen if Dem leaders gave Manchin everything he wanted 1st by moving BIF before BBB instead of passing together, many ridiculed our position. Maybe they’ll believe us next time. Or maybe people will just keep calling us naïve,” she tweeted Sunday.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), one of the most vocal of the Squad, called Manchin’s decision “bullshit.”

Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) likewise excoriated Manchin on Twitter.
Joe Manchin pretends to have a problem with the cost of a $1.75T investment over 10 years in the American people, but has no problem with giving $9T to weapons makers and the military. https://t.co/RHyOem75M6

Progressive Dem @AyannaPressley: “To be clear, my lack & deficit of trust was about Sen Manchin. He has continued to move the goalposts… he is obstructing the president’s agenda.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have notably not responded to Manchin’s decision as of this writing.
Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said Manchin’s ‘no’ vote is “not a huge shock” but claimed the fight over Build Back Better “is not over yet.”

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) called Manchin’s decision “an outrage.”
The Grinch just stole Christmas for many and don’t expect any last minute Dr. Seuss happy ending. After 6 months of talking and talking, Joe Manchin finally made it unequivocal, on Fox News, of course, he’s with the Republicans. He is “NO” on #BuildBackBetter. What an outrage!

The death of his signature legislation marks a fitting end to Biden’s first disastrous year as puppet president.
