Yesterday I wrote about the scandal in Saudi Arabia where a vendor of camel urine (which Mohammed taught was divine medicine) was selling bottles of his own urine for customers to drink. Now, a day later, the Malaysian Fatwa Council declares that E-Cigarettes are haram, and one who smokes E-Cigarettes could be subject to punishment under Sharia Law.

Meeting of the Malayasian National Fatwa Council

Via the Malaysian Fatwa Council (translated by Google Translate) and the UK Telegraph:

E-cigarettes and vaping have been declared haram – forbidden for Muslims – by Malaysia’s National Fatwa Council.

Dr Abdul Shukor Husin, chairman of the council, said that the decision had been taken following careful consideration of the health implications of vaping.

“From the Sharia aspect, it is detrimental to health” he said. “Islam forbids its followers from using things that can harm them directly or indirectly; immediately or gradually that can lead to death, damage the body, result in dangerous illnesses or harm the mind.”

“[E-cigarettes] also have an element of wastage … spending money on things that are harmful and non-beneficial.”

The council’s edict was also informed by the fact that “women and school children” had been showing an interest in vaping, Husin said: “The decision is made to prevent an unhealthy culture from spreading to future generations.”

Four Malaysian states have banned vaping to date, and the Fatwa Council urged the rest of the country to follow suit.

Tonight’s decision is also in line with the opinions of several other Muslim countries including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates,” Husin said.
