The chairman of the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot claimed Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that the breach was “premeditated” despite the FBI finding no evidence to support that assertion.
Host Margaret Brennan asked Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), “How premeditated was this attack?”
“Well, there’s no question. Clearly, the direction of the committee is to look at that premeditation, to make sure that we identify it, but the worst kept secret in America is that Donald Trump invited individuals to come to Washington on Jan. 6.,” Johnson replied.
[embedded content]“He said all hell would break loose. Steve Bannon was part of the conversation and the promotion of January 6,” he continued.
“The very podcast you- we just listened to talks about it. Steve Bannon was in the War Room and he was in the Willard Hotel doing a lot of things. So that’s why we subpoenaed him. That’s why we felt it was important for the committee and staff to depose him. And as you saw, he refused to participate.”
Johnson’s remarks directly contradict the FBI’s conclusion that the breach into the Capitol building was not coordinated or planned by right-wing leaders.
“Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases,” a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation said in August. “Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages.”
In fact, subsequent reporting found that the FBI largely coordinated the effort to breach the Capitol building using undercover operatives embedded in the protest.
Facts and evidence, however, won’t stop the Democrats’ partisan witch hunt of the January 6 protest to demonize Republicans ahead of the 2022 midterms.
