The CDC has called for an “emergency meeting” following a high number of reports of myocarditis, or heart inflammation, in people vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna Covid-19 vaccines.
On Thursday, the agency set a date to discuss over 570 reports in vaccinated people of myocarditis and pericarditis, an inflammation of the tissue surrounding the heart.
A note on the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) website announced the emergency meeting will be held virtually and will take place on June 18th from 11-5PM ET.
A draft agenda posted by ACIP shows the meeting will entail an “update on Covid-19 vaccine safety, including myocarditis after mRNA vaccines and VaST [Vaccine Safety Technical] assessment,” as well as a benefit-risk discussion regarding the vaccine being distributed to adolescents.
In charts posted by the CDC, 216 reports of myocarditis/pericarditis were reported following the first injection of either Pfizer or Moderna’s Covid vaccine, with the number jumping to 573 reports after the second dose.
Earlier this month, the CDC said it would launch an investigation into a link between the vaccine and several cases of heart inflammation in vaccinated adolescents.
In a statement to physicians, the CDC cautioned: ““Consider myocarditis and pericarditis in adolescents or young adults with acute chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations. In this younger population, coronary events are less likely to be a source of these symptoms.”
The FDA gave emergency use authorization to Pfizer last month for the vaccine to be administered to 12 to 15-year-olds. On Thursday, Moderna filed for similar approval, seeking to vaccinate 12 to 17-year-olds.
News of the federal agency’s emergency meeting follows a Canadian virologist’s warning that heart inflammation and blood clots are direct side effects related to the spike proteins contained in the experimental mRNA injections.
“What has been discovered by the scientific community is the spike protein on its own is almost entirely responsible for the damage to the cardiovascular system if it gets into circulation,” Dr. Byram Bridle recently told “On Point with Alex Pierson.”
“Indeed, if you inject the purified spike protein into the blood of research animals, they get all kinds of damage to the cardiovascular system and it can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause damage to the brain,” Dr. Bridle said.
Despite the numerous reports of myocarditis, the FDA has not yet ordered a halt to vaccine distribution, as it did back in April when it recommended a pause in administering Johnson & Johnson’s Covid vaccine following reports of blood clots.
