Omar Makram. former Muslim
In my years of working with Muslims and Islam, I have found that many Muslims who eventually become Christians at least for a time describe themselves as atheists. It is not that most of these people are actually atheists in the sense that they do not believe in God and have an active hatred towards him. Rather, they are semi-agnostic because their concept of God, religion, and truth is naturally distorted because of their Muslim background.
Think about it: If you were raised to believe that Allah is the all-powerful being who made everything yet sanctifies and rewards mass murder, torture, rape, robbery, and a wealth of other perverse actions, how could you not, at least for a time, question his very existence?
While I do not know Mr. Makram’s particualr story and while I do not agree with all of his views, pray for him- both for his safety and that the Lord would continue to lead him toward the Holy Faith, which is the only thing that will answer the questions he most likely has and impart to him the peace which passes all understanding.
