The Ley Mordaza (gag law) went into force July 1 in Spain and we are already seeing negative effects on organizing, press freedoms and freedom of expression.
“Yesterday in Alicante: 651e fine to a girl because her t-shirt said A.C.A.B. Shirt was confiscated.”
On July 3, a woman in Alicante was fined 600 euros (just under $670 USD) for wearing an ACAB shirt. She was charged under Article 37, paragraph 4 of the Public Safety Act which states:
Article 37, Minor Offenses: The lack of respect and consideration provided to a member of the Security Forces in the performance of their duties to protect the safety, when these behaviors do not constitute a criminal offense.
Tents went up in Madrid on July 7 when activists began camping in an act of civil disobedience to protest the unconstitutional gag laws. Around 20 people have been camped in Puerta del Sol Madrid, in defiance of the #LeyMordaza for the past 5 days. They are directly breaking the new laws by camping in the plaza as protesting without a permit and carrying out assemblies in public spaces are now outlawed. Police can also prohibit any protest at will if they feel “order will be disrupted.”
Last night journalist Juan Carlos Mohr was detained while taking pictures in the camp and working with Fotomovimiento. Mohr covers evictions and is well known by the police. 3 people were injured during Mohr’s detention including 2 other journalists from Fotomoviemento.
“@juancarlosmohr detained at @AcampadaMordaza and attacks on 2 journalists from @Fotomovimiento. Every time more hate.”
“The injured from the police attack during the arrest of Juan Carlos Mohr just left the hospital.”
Mohr has since been released but tweeted that police told him to delete his photos.
-after an hour handcuffed
-We negotiate? We won’t do anything if you delete the photos
Despite the arbitrary arrest of a high profile journalist and police aggression against other members of the press and protesters, #AcampadaMordaza continues today. You can follow the camp on twitter and facebook for updates or check their blog for further information.
