ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - University of Michigan plans to launch a new microbial studies program aimed at better understanding human health and diseases.
The Ann Arbor school announced Wednesday that it's using a five-year, $2.5 million award from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund for the program.

The university will accept its first students in August into the program that integrates biology with modeling, epidemiology and ecology. Students will come from many different departments and laboratories.

Their research and training will include exploring how microorganisms on or in the body act to prevent or enhance disease processes.
The university also recently created the Center for Microbial Systems.
