The Oklahoma legislature’s near-total ban on abortion, explained

<p>The Republican-led Oklahoma state House has passed a <a href="http://webserver1.lsb.state.ok.us/cf_pdf/2021-22%20ENGR/SB/SB612%20ENGR.PDF">near-total ban on abortion</a> except in cases where the pregnant person’s life is endangered.</p>
<p>Under the bill, anyone who performs an abortion would face up to 10 years in prison and up to $100,000 in fines. The bill, first passed by the Oklahoma Senate last year, was suddenly revived Tuesday without explanation from Republican lawmakers.</p>
<p>It will now head to Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt, who has committed to <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/571720-oklahoma-gov-stitt-holds-ceremonial-signing-for-9-abortion-bills/">signing any anti-abortion legislation</a> that comes across his desk and has previously described himself as America’s “<a href="https://www.koco.com/article/proud-to-be-called-the-most-pro-life-governor-gov-stitt-signs-another-abortion-related-bill/36267627">most pro-life governor</a>.”</p>
<p>The ban would go into effect 90 days after the state legislature adjourns at the end of May unless courts intervene. Reproductive rights groups are expected to file legal challenges to the ban, which they believe is unconstitutional. The US Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in <em>Roe v. Wade</em> recognized a pregnant person’s fundamental right to seek an abortion, but found that states could still impose restrictions on the procedure in the service of protecting the pregnant person’s health and the potential life of a fetus once it can survive outside the womb.</p>
<p>These legal challenges might be successful given that the bill is similar to other Oklahoma laws recently <a href="https://reproductiverights.org/oklahoma-supreme-court-blocks-new-abortion-restrictions/">struck down</a> by the state supreme court, including laws that restrict medication abortion, suspend the licenses of physicians who provide abortions, and ban abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy. But if the US Supreme Court were to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade</em>, <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/12/1/22811837/supreme-court-roe-wade-abortion-doomed-jackson-womens-health-dobbs-barrett-kavanaugh-roberts">as it is widely expected to</a>, the new ban could survive.</p>
<p>“With barely any notice, the Oklahoma Legislature resurrected a bill that is patently unconstitutional and flies in the face of the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s clear precedent,” Rabia Muqaddam, senior staff attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement. “The Oklahoma Supreme Court has found time and time again that the state’s attempts to restrict abortion are unconstitutional, as this total abortion ban clearly is.”</p>
<p>The bill’s passage came as a surprise to abortion rights advocates in the state, who saw it as a political statement in response to their “Bans Off Oklahoma” rally at the state capitol on Tuesday. The measure was put on the agenda on Tuesday, fairly late in the legislative session, and passed that same day with little time for debate.</p>
<p>“This bill kind of came out of nowhere,” said Tamya Cox-Touré, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma. “This was a direct reflection of the fact that 350 people gathered to demand that abortion access is protected. And this was their retaliation.”</p>
<p>For the few remaining abortion providers in Oklahoma, the bill would be catastrophic. There are just four such facilities across the entire state, which have seen soaring demand since last September, when neighboring Texas enacted a ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.</p>
<p>Trust Women — which operates a clinic in Oklahoma City that provides medication and surgical abortions up to the current legal limit of 21.6 weeks — has seen a 2,500 percent increase in patients. Even though the clinic has doubled the number of days of the week that it’s open from two to four, patients still may have to wait two to four weeks for an abortion, sometimes forcing them to travel to other states if that puts them over the time period within which it’s legal to have an abortion in Oklahoma.</p>
<p>“It’s been nonstop. We are now seeing mostly out-of-state patients,” said Myfy Jensen-Fellows, Trust Women’s advocacy director. “This impacts the entire region.”</p>
<p>It’s not the last anti-abortion measure being considered in this session of the Oklahoma legislature. The state senate has already <a href="https://kfor.com/news/oklahoma-legislature/oklahoma-senate-passes-bill-mirroring-texas-heartbeat-act/">passed</a> the so-called Oklahoma Heartbeat Act, which is a copycat of a Texas ban allowing any private individual to sue doctors who perform abortions after fetal cardiac activity can be detected (typically about six weeks into term) except in the case of a medical emergency. The state House will debate that bill in committee on Wednesday.</p>

<p><strong>House Judiciary Republicans have begun an investigation into Facebook and Twitter censoring The New York Post’s October 2020 revelations regarding the Hunter Biden ‘laptop from hell’.</strong></p>
<p>The Republicans accused Twitter and Facebook Thursday of working to protect Joe Biden from “increased scrutiny about the impropriety detailed in the Post article.”</p>
<p>Recall that the New York Post was <a href="https://summit.news/2020/10/14/digital-civil-war-twitter-blocks-users-from-posting-link-to-new-york-post-biden-lobbying-story/">censored on social media and labelled fake news</a> for the reporting directly before the election. Users were also prohibited from sharing the story.</p>
<p>All coverage of the revelations by Infowars and other alternative media sites was declared to be “false conspiracy theory.”</p>
<p>Now, over a year later, the establishment media is <a href="https://summit.news/2022/03/31/videos-suddenly-the-media-desperately-wants-you-to-know-the-hunter-biden-laptop-story-is-real/">suddenly desperate for everyone to know that the story is real.</a></p>
<p>In an open <a href="https://republicans-judiciary.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/2022-03-31-HJC-GOP-to-Twitter-re-Hunter-Biden-story.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">letter </a>to Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal published Thursday, Republican lawmakers wrote “Shortly before the 2020 election, Twitter suppressed an explosive New York Post article detailing how Hunter Biden used the position and influence of his father, now-President Biden, for personal gain, with the apparent awareness of President Biden.”</p>
<p>The letter continues, “We wrote to Twitter at the time with important questions about Twitter’s knowing suppression of First-Amendment protected activity. Twitter ignored our letter and, in the months since, has avoided any meaningful accountability for its actions.”</p>
<p>“Now, with even the New York Times confirming the accuracy of the Post’s reporting, we are investigating Twitter’s actions to interfere in free and fair election-related public discourse on its platform to the benefit of President Biden and the detriment of former President Trump.” the letter concludes.</p>
<p>Another <a href="https://republicans-judiciary.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/2022-03-31-HJC-GOP-to-Facebook-re-Hunter-Biden-story.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">letter </a>has been sent to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, noting that “Facebook’s actions gave rise to other news outlets, tech platforms, and even Biden himself dismissing the <em>Post </em>story as disinformation or untrue—when, in fact, it had never been rebutted.”</p>
<p>The letter continues, “The <em>Post </em>article was likely to have significant implications for the presidential election,” emphasising that “Although the <em>Post </em>explained exactly how it obtained the emails on which it reported and included pictures of certain emails, Facebook still suppressed the article. The mainsteam media followed Facebook’s lead, wrongly claiming the <em>Post </em>story was “disinfo” and unverified.”</p>
<p>“It appears that Facebook knowingly and deliberately used its platform to control election- related information accessible to the American people shortly before the 2020 election, and that Facebook did so to the primary benefit of then-Vice President Biden,” the letter further states.</p>
<p>The letter concludes, “This irresponsible conduct demands a thorough investigation so that we may understand how Big Tech wields its enormous power over the free flow of information to the detriment of free and fair elections.”</p>
<p>Appearing on Fox Business Thursday, ranking GOP Rep Jim Jordan declared that “Big Tech, Big Democrat Party and Big Media all colluded to keep critical information from the American people in the run up to the most important election we have — the presidential election, so we’re launching an investigation.”</p>

Top Army Colonel: ‘Hard to Believe’ Bucha Massacre ‘Deliberate Act By Russian Military’

<p><strong>Reports by the Western media and governments that Russia perpetrated a so-called massacre in Bucha are “extremely suspicious,” according to retired Army Colonel Douglas MacGregor.</strong></p>
<p>When asked by “The Dive” host Jackson Hinkle on Tuesday whether he thinks it makes sense for the Russians to butcher a bunch of innocent civilians on their way out of Bucha, MacGregor responded, “No, I don’t.”</p>
<p>“Experience in military affairs suggests if you do that sort of thing, all you do is stiffen resistance against you,” he said. “The bodies don’t disappear. The act persists, it has a bad odor, it doesn’t go away.”</p>
<p>“And it’s hard for me to believe that this was a deliberate act done by the Russian military,” he added.</p>

<p>MacGregor explained that the known facts surrounding the reports don’t conclusively support the West’s narrative that Russia committed a massacre in Bucha.</p>
<p>“I looked at both sides of this, and I couldn’t come away with a certain conclusion one way or the other. There were things that didn’t make a lot of sense,” MacGregor said, citing the <a href="https://detv.us/2022/04/05/white-armbands-lead-to-the-perpetrator-maybe-also-the-motive-rt-de/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">white armbands</a> worn by the Bucha victims, which signified neutrality in the conflict or passive support for Russia.</p>
<p>“And all of a sudden large numbers of those people are dead. We do know that Ukrainian forces have killed people like that elsewhere. They’ve assassinated mayors, people have disappeared, and so forth,” he noted.</p>
<p>Another tell that the Bucha massacre is not what it seems came from the Western media and governments when their coordinated coverage of the event suddenly “burst on the scene” followed by military experts parroting its talking points.</p>

<p>“Whenever you have such unanimity in the American and Western media, and you have such brilliant timing such that a piece of news comes out…like that’s happened in Bucha, it comes out and there’s an enormous explosion, it’s almost volcanic, of hate and criticism and stories supporting all of this against the Russians that bursts on the scene almost immediately, all at roughly the same time,” MacGregor observed.</p>

<p>“And all the retired general officers come on and with no exceptions say virtually all the same thing. When that happens, I step back and I’m extremely suspicious and very skeptical because I’ve seen this before,” he added, noting how the media treated the run-up to the Iraq War in 2003.</p>
<p>The apparent timeline of events support MacGregor’s suspicions, where reports of the massacre surfaced just a day after <a href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/ukrainian-police-said-they-conducted-clearing-op-in-bucha-a-day-before-dead-body-videos-emerged/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Ukrainian forces moved into Bucha for a “clearing op”</a>, and several days after Russian forces withdrew from the city.</p>

<p>The mayor of Bucha even celebrated the Russian withdrawal shortly before the alleged massacre took place.</p>

<p>Russia has refuted any involvement in the attack, calling it a <a href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/russia-claims-bucha-massacre-is-a-false-flag-as-u-s-media-calls-for-direct-military-involvement-in-conflict/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">“staged provocation”</a> committed by Ukrainian forces for Western media consumption.</p>
<p>Even the Pentagon released a statement <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/pentagon-cant-independently-confirm-atrocities-ukraines-bucha-official-says-2022-04-04/?taid=624b185ee5704a0001745fb1&utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&utm_medium=trueAnthem&utm_source=twitter" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">admitting they couldn’t confirm that the Bucha “atrocity” happened in the first place</a>.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, the media and western governments are using the Bucha story to push for the United Nations to <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/us-seek-russias-suspension-human-rights-council-83865292" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">expel Russia</a> from the UN Human Rights Council.</p>

<p><strong>Independent journalist and US Navy veteran Patrick Lancaster is in Mariupol, Ukraine to provide on-the-ground coverage of the brutal conflict taking place.</strong></p>
<p>Lancaster is one of the few English-speaking reporters covering the war while traveling with the DPR and LPR rebels and Russian troops, but he encourages people to follow journalists on both sides.</p>
<p>A report uploaded Tuesday shows citizens of Mariupol describing a nearby factory said to be occupied by the infamous Azov Brigade, a neo-Nazi outfit fighting with the Ukrainian military.</p>
<p>One man said he was almost hit twice by a sniper, and declared, “Azov”, when asked who the sniper was fighting for.</p>
<p>After Lancaster suggested the sniper may have thought he was in the military, the man explained he was wearing the clothes seen in the video and that “they shoot at civilians.”</p>
<p>“They don’t shoot military, only civilians,” the man added. “They eliminate civilians. They are actual fascists.”</p>
<p>Another man interviewed by Lancaster echoed the theory that the snipers in the neighborhood are “Nazi guys”, saying, “Ukrainian Nazis are shooting, they just kill people. They kill civilians, women, men, everybody.”</p>
<p>Asked to explain for the camera who the Azov fighters are, the man said, “They collected all the nationalists, some are even from prison. They pay good money to them, and they kill people just for no reason.”</p>

<p>When Lancaster told the locals US and European media claim Russia is destroying cities and killing people, the man said in his experience, “Russia doesn’t shoot at people at all.”</p>
<p>At this point, a crying woman walked up to the camera and told the journalist that if not for Russian assistance, they would be hungry and thirsty along with most of the children in the city.</p>
<p>The woman and a man, possibly her husband, said their apartment was destroyed by “Ukrainian” tanks.</p>
<p>Lancaster documented as a volunteer passed out food to some of the citizens, and an elderly woman raised a loaf of bread to the sky in appreciation to God for the gift.</p>

<p>As he frequently does, Lancaster allowed several citizens to deliver on-camera messages to their loved ones around the world who may see the video.</p>
