Airbnb Bans Russians, Belarusians From Using Services

<p><strong>The online market for lodging and tourism Airbnb said late on Monday it had suspended operations in Russia and Belarus, joining an array of Western corporate shutdowns in those two countries.</strong></p>
<p>Reservations starting on or after April 4 have been canceled, it said.</p>
<p>“Guests globally will no longer be able to make new reservations for stays or Experiences in Russia or Belarus,” the company said in a statement, adding that “Guests located in Russia or Belarus will not be able to make new reservations on Airbnb.”</p>
<p>According to media reports, the platform is not planning to return paid bills for accommodation. Money that was spent on bookings after the April 4 date will be converted into bonuses. However, it is not clear how those bonuses could be used, as the service is no longer available.</p>
<p>Last month, global travel services provider Booking.com terminated activities in Russia and Belarus. It has stopped displays on its site of hotels, guest houses, and hostels in the countries’ territories.</p>

Putin’s Inflation? Homegrown Modern Monetary Theory Is to Blame

<p><strong>Prices of goods and services in the economy seem to be going through the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/us-inflation-consumer-price-index-february-2022-11646857681" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">roof</a>, and both consumers and producers suffer from the falling value of their money.</strong></p>
<p>Unfortunately, the public turns to politicians in Washington and economists around the world for answers.</p>
<p>While president <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/10/business/economy/cpi-inflation-february-2022.html" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Joe Biden</a> and <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/03/09/psaki-predicts-even-worse-inflation-report-after-40-year-high/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">his administration</a> call it Putin’s price hike, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics <a href="http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/cpi.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">reports</a> that over the last twelve months, the all items index increased 7.9 percent before seasonal adjustment. The reported twelve-month increase has been steadily rising and is now the largest since the period ending January 1982. The all items less food and energy index rose 6.4 percent, the largest twelve-month change since the period ending August 1982. The energy index rose 25.6 percent over the last year, and the food index increased 7.9 percent, the largest twelve-month increase since the period ending July 1981.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the government’s debt has exploded to $30 trillion, up from about $10 trillion at the start of the 2008 downturn and $5 trillion in the mid-1990s. While such startling evidence is directly in contradiction with the official narrative of the White House, political elites either ignore the problem altogether or blame the wrong people. Part of the root of this calamity is found in the foundation of economic beliefs of the Biden administration.</p>
<p>Even though Treasury secretary Janet Yellen has distanced herself from modern monetary theory (MMT), as a student of <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2021/06/17/yellen-inflation-treasury-biden/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">James Tobin</a>, she continues to remain an inflationist who believes that government should play a more active role in the economy. For example, she supported the $1.9 trillion stimulus plan signed in March 2020 even though the money was created from thin air. While she does not officially endorse MMT, nonetheless her views of economics do not stray far from MMT orthodoxy.</p>
<p>Stephanie Kelton, author of <em><a href="https://www.amazon.com/s?k=the+deficit+myth&gclid=CjwKCAjwuYWSBhByEiwAKd_n_p6YgPVgseIYJ6lJyMzWqaLYLp1EHObT5bxWaCovjxvpwev9ZSX-8xoCLUsQAvD_BwE&hvadid=360116847730&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9032482&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=13212962522774822221&hvtargid=kwd-774902124190&hydadcr=22535_10353910&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_79iel8n76y_e" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory</a> and the Birth of the People’s Economy</em>, also began doing regular interviews on the topic, becoming the de facto face of the MMT movement. She served as an economic adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders during his presidential campaign and has since advised the Biden administration as well, <a href="https://www.advisorperspectives.com/articles/2021/06/04/stephanie-kelton-biden-has-adopted-mmt" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">going as far as to declare that Biden has adopted her principles</a>.</p>
<h4><strong>What Is Modern Monetary Theory?</strong></h4>
<p>Modern monetary theory begins with the government budget constraint under a system of fiat money. According to William Mitchell, L. Randall Wray, and Martin Watts in <em><a href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Macroeconomics/pPmGDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Macroeconomics++William+F.+Mitchell+,++L.+Randall+Wray+,++Martin+Watts&printsec=frontcover" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Macroeconomics</a></em>, the standard MMT approach, which relates the present value of tax revenue to the present value of government spending and the government debt, is misleading. Further,</p>
<blockquote class="wp-block-quote" readability="8">
<p>the most important conclusion reached by MMT is that the issuer of a currency faces no financial constraints. Put simply, a country that issues its own currency can never run out and can never become insolvent in its currency. It can make all payments as they come due. (p. 13)</p>
</blockquote>
<p>As a result, “For most governments, there is no default risk on government debt” <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33657496-macroeconomics" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">(</a>p. 15).</p>
<p>The most important implication of such a radical theory is that government enjoys potentially limitless power as an arbitrator in the economy. Based on this theory, Congress supposedly can use the printing press effectively via accumulation of debt, raising aggregate demand to the level of full employment. Inflation, according to MMT theorists, is a phenomenon borne out of the class conflicts between workers and capitalists as they jostle for higher shares of the national income (<em>Macroeconomics</em>, p. 255). According to them, moreover, virtually “all spending (private or public) is inflationary if it drives nominal aggregate demand above the real capacity of the economy to absorb it” (<em>Macroeconomics</em>, p. 127).</p>
<p>As is the case with most “crank” theories, the world that this theory describes can never come to life. Full employment is not a criterion that real prices wait for to increase as buyers and sellers compete for scarce resources in the market economy. The view that inflation is a purely monetary phenomenon and that inflation takes place that is beyond the economy’s absorbing capacity are both true to an extent, but both miss the vital picture of the interconnectedness of the market economy.</p>
<h4><strong>Inflation in the Structure of Production</strong></h4>
<p>The general increase in the price level, as the mainstream and MMT theorists want to believe, does not come directly from an increase in money supply or full employment (the “overheated” economy) but from an increase in the scarcity of goods and services whose ability to impact the prices of other goods and services is relatively higher and whose production takes substantial time. The full employment criterion of MMT is therefore not needed for prices to start increasing, as economists like Murray N. Rothbard <a href="https://history.fee.org/media/3883/1399-economics-profressor-murray-n-rothbard-explains-why-inflation-must-lead-to-recession-or-depression.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">have demonstrated</a> when they refer to “stagflation,” the simultaneous increase of inflation and unemployment.</p>
<p>The structure of production in the economy starts with goods produced at the primary stages and ends with the final goods used by consumers. Goods used in the primary stages of the structure of production are created through agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, oil extraction, and other natural resources. These inputs form the base of almost every other product or service provided to consumers. Due to their vital role as the base products of the economy, these products’ price changes due to changes in demand are the most inflationary to all other goods.</p>
<p>The second most effective influencers of prices of other goods are the semifinished goods and services used as inputs by producers during the middle stages to create final goods and services. Given their nongeneral nature, these goods, such as steel and plastic, are used by multiple producers for various next-stage goods. As demand for semifinished goods increases due to increased competition among producers of final goods, it exerts inflationary pressures directly on final-goods prices.</p>
<p>When additional money is introduced into the economy as a result of increased government spending, it leads consumers to increase their consumption of final goods due to their increased money balances. As demand for final goods increases, producers of final goods look to purchase more primary order goods and various other intermediate goods, whose scarcity then increases due to increased competition among producers, which leads to an increase in these goods’ prices.</p>
<p>This reorients prices of the entire structure of production, and the shift is then observed as a general increase in prices through <a href="https://data.oecd.org/price/inflation-cpi.htm#:~:text=Inflation%20measured%20by%20consumer%20price%20index%20%28CPI%29%20is,food%2C%20energy%20and%20total%20excluding%20food%20and%20energy." rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">various</a> <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/wpi-inflation-eases-to-12-96-in-january-food-prices-harden-8089791.html" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">indexes</a>. The severity of increases in prices depends upon the ability to meet the increased demand for base goods and intermediate goods. </p>
<p>We can understand that inflation is a phenomenon that takes place due to changes in scarcity as a result of increased competition between producers each pursuing their independent ends. While increases in prices are a part of the adaptive market process that guides production and consumption, soaring inflation levels or sudden general increases in prices require an additional generation of money in the economy that is more than the money created through consumer and producer credit in the natural course of the economy. Had the changes in money supply been internal to the economy, the adaptive market process would have worked to allocate goods efficiently.</p>
<p>When governments create artificial demand and try to increase their spending in an unchecked manner, they effectively create inflationary pressures in the structure of production. At the same time, they also destroy the allocating price mechanism of the markets, which gets worse the more they spend. While printing and digitally transferring money might take seconds, production and distribution takes much longer.</p>
<h4><strong>The Proper Role of Prices in the Market Process</strong></h4>
<p>As Congress armed with MMT attempts to dictate the course of the economy based on their political leanings, it leads to distortions of prices in the structure of production, but the rise in prices is not the problem per se. The rise in prices in a well-functioning market has a specific role; when an object of use becomes scarce in the market, it is a signal to consumers to economize on it. At the same time, price increases point in the direction of a more profitable employment of resources—production of the expensive good—until supernormal profits are exhausted. When prices rise artificially, however, this destroys the efficient allocation mechanism of markets and is a tax levied on consumers that reduces the purchasing power of their money, as well as their saved-up wealth.</p>
<p>Inflation-driven price increases act as signals that misdirect the employment of resources, leading producers to make inefficient choices and allocate factors erroneously. They undermine the trust in the price mechanism from all sides. Prices in this situation are like traffic signals that always misdirect traffic.</p>
<h4><strong>Conclusion</strong></h4>
<p>The only thing modern about MMT is the unprecedented amount of confidence in both its advocacy and application. The US economy already has experienced the Keynesian spending spree of the sixties, which ended in <a href="https://www.thoughtco.com/stagflation-in-a-historical-context-1148155#:~:text=%20Economic%20Stagflation%20in%20a%20Historical%20Context%20,was%20the%20Federal%20Reserve%20Board%2C%20which...%20More%20" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">the stagflation </a>of the seventies. When the government’s economic policies are based on the belief that the government can print unlimited amounts of money with little or no repercussions, we should not be surprised to find ourselves living under the most inflationary period in <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/us-inflation-consumer-price-index-february-2022-11646857681" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">forty years</a>.</p>

Why It’s Looking More like the 1970s than the 1950s.

<p><strong>Last July when a team of White House economists issued their <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/cea/written-materials/2021/07/06/historical-parallels-to-todays-inflationary-episode/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">analysis</a> of the predicament the US economy was mired in, the historical parallel they landed on was the immediate years following the Second World War.</strong></p>
<p>In their telling, it was similar supply shortages and pent-up demand that was causing all the inflation. Once resolved, a golden age of 1950s good growth and low inflation awaited. Alas, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a decade more analogous to the 1970s is likelier than ever before us.</p>
<p>Then as now, much of the damage has been self-imposed.</p>
<p>In short order: Congress spent profligately, putting unnecessary wars and expansive welfare schemes on the national credit card; the Fed mismanaged the money supply, keeping interest rates too low for too long; and shocks to global food and energy markets, in large part as a response to US foreign policy, combined to produce the most miserable economic decade experienced in the United States since the 1930s.</p>
<p>Back then, it was Vietnam, LBJ’s Great Society programs, the Kennedy and Nixon tax cuts, the Fed keeping interest rates too low for too long, droughts, bad harvests, and the US taking Israel’s side in the Yom Kippur War. In our own times, it has been Afghanistan, Iraq, and the war on terror, the expansion of Medicare and Medicaid, the Bush and Trump tax cuts, the Fed keeping interest rates too low for too long, and the US intervention on the side of Ukraine against Russia.</p>
<p>Stagflation was a period of low growth and high inflation. Characterized by higher-than-usual unemployment, it defied the postwar Keynesian orthodoxy, which held that one could have either higher inflation, when the economy was in full employment, or higher unemployment in exchange for lower inflation. Then as now, the Fed obfuscated while Congress and the president enacted unhelpful interventionist policies that further disrupted the economy. Today even price controls, which virtually all economists then and now agree were a bad idea and a failure, are openly mulled over.</p>
<p>Admitting that the Fed is way behind the curve in trying to control inflation—that the present schedule of interest rate hikes and quantitative tightening will be insufficient, that Congress will not rein in its spending—the deficit has grown year on year, and the debt now stands at a probably unpayable $30 trillion. Indeed, servicing the debt in a higher–interest rate environment will prove taxing enough. On top of escalating economic warfare, the global economy is retrenching, and this will lead to higher prices for consumers across the board.</p>
<p>Recognizing these things leaves optimists with only one hope: we grow our way out of it.</p>

<p>Though daunting, it isn’t as impossible as it may seem.</p>
<p>In the 1970s, several things prevented our growing out of it—that is, escaping inflation by growing the real economy at a rate faster than inflation.</p>
<p>First, the one-off productivity increases that came about from the mass industrialization and rationalization of the economy during the Second World War, as well as the expansion of road networks, highways, dams, bridges, et cetera—were spent.</p>
<p>On the international level, a rebuilt Japan and Germany were increasingly eroding the comparative advantage of US businesses. As barriers to trade and investment were lowered, firms seeking to survive the higher-cost and more competitive environment increasingly took operations offshore.</p>
<p>Domestically, this translated into a rapid increase in the percentage of the US economy that came from services. Here, several things interacted to compound the existing problems. It wasn’t properly recognized at the time, but efficiency gains, which drive growth and wages, are much harder to come by in the service sector. The famous example given is a string quartet—it takes a set number of people and a set amount of time to play a piece. At the same time, a flood of low-skill labor was also entering the market, as the baby boomers and the mothers of the baby boomers returned to the workforce, often after long absences. This lowered the price of labor, discouraging capital investment at a time when total factor productivity was beginning to flatline.</p>
<p>It is in the labor markets that we find our best chance of growing out of inflation and avoiding stagnation. For while labor markets in the 1970s were loose and made looser by the increasing globalization of the workforce, today labor markets are already quite tight and likely to only get tighter as the many baby boomers continue to retire and the major economies turn increasingly inward. Sanctions will accelerate the already ongoing processes of reshoring jobs, raising protective barriers, and subsidizing the creation of domestic supply chains. Together with the high cost of labor encouraging efficiency gains through increased investment in capital, in the next generation of basic technologies like AI, it is possible that the US could escape inflation and stave off a recession—but don’t count on it.</p>
<p>It is telling that in their report the White House’s economists manage never to mention continual fiscal deficits or mistaken monetary policy. Telling, perhaps, but not surprising. As in the 1970s, the president, Congress, and the Fed have mismanaged the economy. So while there are obviously other contributing factors, these being the most within the nominal control of the citizens of a democratic republic, the part played by the state should not be forgotten.</p>
<p>Of course, they no doubt will be.  </p>

Ukraine Under Fire: Reporter Documents War-Torn Mariupol

<p><strong>Independent journalist Patrick Lancaster documented the scene as citizens of Mariupol, Ukraine attempted to either flee or go into hiding amid heavy shelling.</strong></p>
<p>Lancaster is embedded with the soldiers fighting for the Donetsk People’s Republic and Russia, but encourages everyone around the world to monitor reporting from both sides of the Ukraine conflict.</p>
<p>Footage posted Monday shows Lancaster hanging out with some of the young animals living at the Mariupol private zoo.</p>
<p>The zoo’s owner told Lancaster several animals have already died after being hit by shrapnel, but says he’ll have to remain in the warzone since he can’t evacuate all of the critters.</p>
<p>Asked for his opinion on the war, the zoo owner said, “Nobody needs it. Brother fights brother…”</p>
<p>Regarding who is responsible for the shelling of his city, the zookeeper said both sides are shooting, adding, “It’s a war.”</p>
<p>Tragic footage shows citizens holed up in a basement being evacuated to Russia where they have relatives.</p>
<p>Many of the individuals who chose to stay in Mariupol looked into Lancaster’s camera and told their loved ones in other countries that they were alive and well.</p>

<p>One crying woman explained that her mother is lost and she won’t leave the city until she finds her.</p>
<p>Throughout the heartbreaking interviews, thundering crashes of nearby explosions constantly ring out.</p>
<p>Near the end of the report, a grieving woman in an ambulance claimed the Ukrainian military shelled civilian neighborhoods, saying, “It’s like they’re evicting us from there.”</p>
<p>At the center of Mariupol, Lancaster’s footage shows a Russian flag was raised after their forces took a portion of the city from the Ukrainian military.</p>
<p>Another woman alleged the Ukrainian military’s Azov Battalion endangered civilians in the city by bombing them, claiming, “It was flying from the direction they [Ukrainians] were located… They just removed us so that people did not gather there, and their tanks could freely go to the ring road.”</p>
