The Covid-19 Vaccines have killed more people in 8 months than Covid-19 has killed in 18 months

<p><strong>There can no longer be any doubt that the Covid-19 injections are more deadly than the alleged Covid-19 virus itself thanks to a raft of official Public Health and Government data available, confirming more people have died due to the Covid-19 vaccine in 8 months than people who have died of Covid-19 in 18 months.</strong></p>
<p><a href="https://www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-daily-deaths/weekly-total-archive/">NHS data for England</a> shows that since March 2020 up to the 12th August 2021 a total of 3,743 people have allegedly died of Covid-19 who had no other pre-existing conditions which include dementia, chronic kidney disease, chronic pulmonary disease, chronic neurological disease, and heart disease.</p>

<p>Whilst official <a href="https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//statistics/covid19/covid-deaths-21-report-week-32.pdf">data provided by the National Records of Scotland</a> (NRS) shows that just 704 people have died of Covid-19 in the whole of Scotland who had no other pre-existing conditions between March 2020 and July 31st 2021.</p>

<p>However, <a href="https://beta.publichealthscotland.scot/media/8183/21-06-23-covid19-publication_report.pdf">data released by Public Health Scotland</a> shows that between the 8th December 2020 and 11th June 2021 a total of 5,522 people died within 28 days of having a Covid-19 injection with 1,827 deaths being due to the Pfizer jab, 3,643 deaths being due to the AstraZeneca jab, and 2 deaths being due to the Moderna jab.</p>

<p>This means that in just 6 months nearly 8 times as many people died within 28 days of having a Covid-19 vaccine than people who died of Covid-19 (704 deaths) in 18 months in Scotland. Whilst 1.5 times as many people died within 28 days of having a Covid-19 vaccine in Scotland than the number of people who have died of Covid-19 (3,743 deaths) in 18 months in England.</p>
<p>Even when adding the number of people who have died of Covid-19 in both England and Scotland together; which comes to 4,447 deaths in 18 months, there have still been 1,075 more deaths within 28 days of having a Covid-19 vaccine in Scotland.</p>
<p>Public Health England have so far <a href="https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/deaths_for_any_reason_within_28_34">refused to publish</a> the number of deaths within 28 days of a having a Covid-19 vaccine in England, claiming they do not hold the data despite their counterparts in Scotland being able to provide it.</p>

<p>But based on the number of deaths seen in Scotland and adjusting to the population for England we estimate that the number could have been as high as 57,470 in England by the 11th June 2021.</p>
<p>There are of course those that will argue that using the number of deaths within 28 days of having a Covid-19 vaccine does not mean the person died due to the Covid-19 vaccine. They are of course correct, but these will be the same people that believe a death that has occurred within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test is definitely a Covid-19 death.</p>
<p>Which is why we’d like to point these people to the data provided by the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting#annex-1-vaccine-analysis-print">MHRA Yellow Card scheme</a>, which shows more people have died due to the Covid-19 vaccines in 8 months than the number of people who have died of Covid-19 in the whole of Scotland in 18 months.</p>
<p>As of the 11th August there have been 293,779 adverse reactions and 501 deaths reported to the MHRA against the <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1012207/COVID-19_mRNA_Pfizer-_BioNTech_vaccine_analysis_print_final.pdf">Pfizer mRNA injection.</a></p>

<p>As well as 813,622 adverse reactions and 1,053 deaths reported to the MHRA against the <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1012208/COVID-19_vaccine_AstraZeneca_analysis_print_final.pdf">AstraZeneca viral vector injection.</a></p>

<p>The <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1012209/COVID-19_vaccine_Moderna_analysis_print_final.pdf">Moderna mRNA injection</a> meanwhile has caused at least 41,274 adverse reactions and 14 deaths as of the 11th August 2021. This vaccine has also mainly been administered to younger adults who are least at risk of suffering debilitating disease if infected with Covid-19. Around 1.4 million people have received the Moderna jab which means at least 1 in every 33 people have suffered and adverse reaction and at least 1 in every 100,000 people have sadly died.</p>

<p>The overall number of deaths due to all three jabs now stands at 1,596 when including the 28 deaths that have been reported where the <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1012210/COVID-19_vaccine_brand_unspecified_analysis_print_final.pdf">brand of vaccine was not specified.</a></p>
<p>Therefore 892 more people have died due to the Covid-19 vaccine in the UK in 8 months than people who have died of Covid-19 in Scotland in 18 months.</p>
<p>But it’s also important to remember that the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/drug-safety-update/yellow-card-please-help-to-reverse-the-decline-in-reporting-of-suspected-adverse-drug-reactions">MHRA have stated just 10% of serious adverse reactions</a> are reported to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.</p>

<p>Therefore that official number could be as high as 15,960 meaning thousands more have died due to the Covid-19 vaccine than have died of Covid-19 in the whole of the UK.</p>
<p>It doesn’t matter which way you look at it, the official data is now clear. The Covid-19 vaccines are more deadly than the alleged Covid-19 virus itself, and that is precisely why Public Health England refuse to publish the number of deaths that have occurred within 28 days of having a Covid-19 vaccine.</p>

<p><strong>It’s time to admit the Covid-19 injection programme is a huge failure, stop jabbing children, and return to normal life because according to the latest Public Health data they simply either do not work or quite possibly make the recipient worse if exposed to the alleged Covid-19 virus</strong>.</p>
<p>We can exclusively reveal that the unvaccinated account for just 25% of deaths in the last four weeks, (and that percentage has reduced in more recent weeks), the unvaccinated have a much lower chance of being hospitalised, a much lower chance of death if infected with Covid-19, and a much lower chance of death if hospitalised with Covid-19, and the Public Health Authorities are doing their best to hide it.</p>
<p>Public Health Scotland (PHS) have been releasing a weekly Covid-19 statistical report with an array of data on testing, cases, hospitalisations, and deaths. A <span><a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/8183/21-06-23-covid19-publication_report.pdf">report released by PHS back in June 2021</a></span> even revealed the total number of deaths to have occurred within 28 days of having a Covid-19 injection since the vaccination programme began.</p>
<p>Up to the 11th June 2021, PHS state that 5,522 died within 28 days of having either the Pfizer, Moderna, or AstraZeneca Covid-19 injection.</p>

<p>Strangely, Public Health Scotland have not released any updates on this figure since June 2021; most likely due to the unfavourable number that have occurred,. But at least they bothered to release some information on the number of deaths to have occurred within 28 days of having a Covid-19 injection, unlike Public Health England who claim they do not have a record of the data.</p>
<p>The <span><a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/8918/21-09-01-covid19-publication_report.pdf">latest PHS Covid-19 statistical report</a></span> was published on the 1st September 2021 with the vast majority statistics ranging up to the date of the 30th August 2021, except for deaths in which PHS only provide the number to have occurred up to the 19th August 2021.</p>
<p>Public Health Scotland present the number of cases, hospitalisations, and deaths by vaccination status – however, it should be noted that they regard someone who has received two doses of a Covid-19 injection less than 14 days prior to their confirmed case, hospitalisation or death as only having had a single dose. And they regard someone has received a single dose less than 14 days prior to their confirmed case, hospitalisation, or death as unvaccinated.</p>
<p>Table 15 of the latest report shows us the number of confirmed positive Covid-19 cases by week and vaccination status from the 31st July through to the 27th August 2021. The most recent week beginning 21st August 2021 shows that 15,442 cases occurred among the unvaccinated population, whilst 14,346 occurred among the fully vaccinated population. This represents a 2-fold increase in the number of cases from the previous week in both the unvaccinated and fully vaccinated population.</p>

<p>However, taking data from the previous four weeks we can find that a total of 30,091 cases have been confirmed among the unvaccinated population, whilst 27,450 cases have occurred among the fully vaccinated population. Therefore, you would expect hospitalisations to also be highest among the unvaccinated population, especially considering the fact they haven’t had a Covid-19 injection that would have allegedly reduced their risk of hospitalisation and death by 95%.</p>
<p>Table 16 of the latest report shows us the number of hospitalisations by week and vaccination status from the 31st July through to the 27th August 2021. The most recent week beginning 21st August 2021 shows that 153 hospitalisations have occurred among the unvaccinated population, whilst 261 hospitalisations have occurred among the fully vaccinated population.</p>
<p>“That must be an anomaly?”, we hear some you ask. “Surely if the Covid-19 injection reduced the risk of hospitalisation by 95% then there should be less fully vaccinated people hospitalised with Covid-19 than unvaccinated people? Because there have been less fully vaccinated people infected with Covid-19 than unvaccinated people”.</p>

<p>Well we’re afraid it isn’t an anomaly, because taking the totals for the last four weeks from the 31st July the number of hospitalisations in the unvaccinated population stands at 509, whilst the number of hospitalisations among the fully vaccinated population stands at 657.</p>
<p>What this also shows is that the fully vaccinated are at a much higher risk of being hospitalised if infected with Covid-19. Just 1.69% of cases among the unvaccinated population in the last four weeks have resulted in hospitalisation, whilst 2.4% of cases among the fully vaccinated population have resulted in hospitalisation.</p>
<p>This shows that the fully vaccinated are 1.42 times / 42% more likely to be hospitalised with Covid-19 than the unvaccinated population, when the Covid-19 injection is supposed to make them 95% less likely to be hospitalised with Covid-19 than the unvaccinated population.</p>
<p>“Maybe they were hospitalised with something else and just tested positive?” we hear you ask. “Surely the majority of deaths have occurred among the unvaccinated population, considering the majority of cases are among the unvaccinated?”.</p>
<p>Well, this is where Public Health Scotland are doing their upmost to make it seem like the majority of deaths are among the unvaccinated population when the opposite is in fact true.</p>
<p>Rather than showing the total number of deaths on a week by week basis like they have with both cases and hospitalisations, PHS have decided to present deaths by vaccination status using the start date of December 29th 2021.</p>
<p>PHS claim they use the date of 29th December 2020 because it accounts for “protection to develop after the first dose” due to this date being 21 days after the start of the vaccination programme.</p>

<p>But by doing so they have been able to easily ensure alleged Covid-19 deaths are the highest among the unvaccinated because by the peak of the alleged second wave of Covid-19 deaths on the 27th January 2021, Scotland had only given a single dose of a Covid-19 vaccine to 9% of the population, whilst just 0.1% were fully vaccinated. Therefore a huge swathe of alleged Covid-19 deaths have of course occurred in the unvaccinated population, because a negligible amount of people were vaccinated at the time.</p>

<p>But by comparing the weekly reports released by PHS we are able to work out the true number of Covid-19 deaths by vaccination status and it shows that the vast majority are occurring among the fully vaccinated.</p>
<p>Table 17 of the most recent report reveals that from the 29th December 2020 through to the 19th August 2021 there have been 3,096 deaths among the unvaccinated population, 277 deaths among the partly vaccinated population, and 264 deaths among the fully vaccinated population – but don’t forget, the majority of the deaths in the unvaccinated population occurred between the 29th December 2020 and the 27th January 2021 when just 0.1% of Scotland were fully vaccinated.</p>

<p>If we rewind four weeks to the <span><a href="https://publichealthscotland.scot/media/8631/21-08-04-covid19-publication_report.pdf">report released by PHS on the 2nd August 2021</a></span> we can see that 3,052 occurred among the unvaccinated population, 270 deaths occurred in the partly vaccinated population, and 140 deaths occurred among the fully vaccinated population up to the 22nd July 2021.</p>

<p>This means that based on the most recent data just 44 deaths occurred among the unvaccinated population in the last four weeks, whilst 7 deaths occurred in the partly vaccinated population, and 124 deaths occurred in the fully vaccinated population – meaning the unvaccinated have accounted for just 25% of Covid-19 deaths in the new Summer third wave despite accounting for the majority of alleged Covid-19 cases.</p>
<p>What this also shows is that that the risk of death, if infected or hospitalised with Covid-19, is much higher among the fully vaccinated population when the risk of death for the fully vaccinated is supposed to be reduced by 95% compared to the unvaccinated population.</p>
<p>In the most recent four weeks 0.1% of confirmed cases among the unvaccinated population have resulted in death, whilst 0.33% of confirmed cases among the fully vaccinated population have resulted in death. Therefore, according to Public Health Scotland’s own data, the risk of death if infected with Covid-19 is 3.3 times / 230% higher if fully vaccinated compared to being unvaccinated.</p>
<p>The data also shows that 6.5% of hospitalisations among the unvaccinated population have resulted in death, whilst 14% of hospitalisations among the fully vaccinated population have resulted in death. Therefore, the risk of death if hospitalised with Covid-19 is 2.15 times / 115% higher if fully vaccinated compared to being unvaccinated.</p>
<p>If the Covid-19 injections were working then we should be seeing the majority of hospitalisations and deaths among the unvaccinated population because they account for the majority of confirmed cases. But the Public Health Scotland data isn’t just showing us that they’re not working, it’s also showing us that the Covid-19 injections seem to be making people who are infected with Covid-19 worse.</p>
<p>Therefore it’s time to admit the Covid-19 injection programme has been a huge failure, stop giving an experimental injection to children, and return to normal life.</p>

<p>Susanna Clarke’s haunting, haunted <a href="https://bookshop.org/books/piranesi-9781432886578/9781635575637"><em>Piranesi</em></a> is one of the most astonishing books I’ve read in a very long time, sort of Narnia meets <em>Paradise Lost</em> meets Borges. From the author of the much-beloved <a href="https://bookshop.org/books/jonathan-strange-mr-norrell/9781635576726"><em>Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell</em></a>, it tells the story of a man called Piranesi, living all alone in a vast and flooded marble house, full of statues.</p>
<p>As far as Piranesi knows, the house is the only thing in the world, and he himself one of the only living men in it. He loves his life, and he loves the house. He calls himself the house’s Beloved Child. So gentle and compelling is his voice that when you read the book, you can feel yourself getting swallowed up by Piranesi’s beloved house, and by Piranesi’s terrible, radiant innocence.</p>
<p>As the <a href="https://www.vox.com/vox-book-club">Vox Book Club</a> reconvenes for September, we’re coming back in style by reading <em>Piranesi</em>. <p>On August 15, 2021, the Taliban took over Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul. The Afghan president fled the country. Almost all of Afghanistan is now under Taliban control. It marks the end of an era: America’s longest war is now over, and America lost. It happened fast, stunning the world and leaving many in the country racing to find an exit. But even among those surprised by the way the end played out, many knew the war was destined to end badly. According to some experts, the seeds of disaster were planted back at the war’s very beginning.</p>
<p>Soon after the American war in Afghanistan began in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the US government struggled to answer exactly why the military was there. In the very beginning, the goal was relatively clear: to capture the perpetrator of the attacks, Osama bin Laden. But almost immediately, the goals became murkier and more complicated.</p>
<p>In this video, investigative reporter Azmat Khan and former US ambassador to Afghanistan Michael McKinley explain what the US military was actually doing in Afghanistan, what it got wrong, and why America’s long intervention there is considered a failure.</p>

The new digital driver’s licenses from Apple sound slightly creepy

<p>Driver’s licenses stored on our phones are not too far down the road.</p>
<p>Residents of Arizona and Georgia will soon be able to use their iPhones and Apple Watches <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/7/22522864/apple-wallet-iphone-airport-ids-hotel-key-card-ios-15-wwdc">as digital driver’s licenses or ID cards</a>. People living in Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, Iowa, Utah, and Connecticut will get the feature next. Meanwhile, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is going to designate lanes at specific airports to start processing these new digital IDs in order to clear people to travel.</p>
<p>When residents add their state ID to their Wallet, Apple explained in a Wednesday press release, they’ll have to send a picture of their card and a photo of their faces, and they’ll also have to “complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process.” It’s then up to the states to verify the ID before people can use them. In effect, this system appears to be a new form of government-supported biometric ID verification that goes beyond a regular photo in a process that potentially provides new data to state governments as well as to Apple.</p>
<p>At the new TSA lanes, for example, Apple users will be able to tap their iPhones or Apple Watches to an identity reader. They will then be shown the information being requested by the TSA and authorize their devices to send that data to the TSA by using Face ID or Touch ID. This, Apple says, “ensures that just the required information is shared and only the person who added the driver’s license or state ID to the device can present it.” The company added, “Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID.”</p>
<p>Apple is not not the only one rolling out digital driver’s licenses in the United States. New York State is working with IBM on the possibility of expanding its Excelsior Pass vaccine passport system to include driver’s licenses, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/09/nyregion/excelsior-pass-vaccine-passport.html">a New York Times report</a>. The federal government is also on board with the concept. In April, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it was <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/04/19/2021-07957/minimum-standards-for-drivers-licenses-and-identification-cards-acceptable-by-federal-agencies-for">looking for input</a> on upcoming rules for mobile digital driver’s licenses.</p>
<p>But are digital IDs a good thing? From a privacy and security perspective, it’s unclear — but they also seem to be inevitable.</p>
<p>The pandemic has helped some people get more comfortable with storing personal information on their phones, which might explain why states and tech companies are forging ahead with the idea of digital driver’s licenses. These efforts are flanked by an ongoing and highly polarizing debate over <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22384340/vaccine-passport-vaccine-record-covid-19-clear-commonpass-excelsior-pass">digital vaccine passports</a>, which provide people with an easy way to prove they’ve been inoculated so that they can do things like <a href="https://www.vox.com/recode/22384340/vaccine-passport-vaccine-record-covid-19-clear-commonpass-excelsior-pass">board a plane or go to a concert</a>. Several states, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/these-states-are-attempting-ban-or-curtail-use-vaccine-passports-n1264665">including Florida and Texas</a>, have banned or restricted vaccine passports, which suggests that some Americans still are not comfortable storing certain highly personal information on their phones.</p>
<p>Though the technology that powers them is similar in many ways, digital driver’s licenses are not the same thing as vaccine passports, as health records aren’t necessarily involved. Many of the plans and proposals being considered — including Apple’s imminent digital driver’s license system — simply call for a secure, verifiable way to store all the information that’s currently on your physical driver’s license on your phone. Proponents of these digital state identification systems say this tech will make it more convenient to show your ID and will give people more control over their information. Privacy and civil liberties advocates warn that normalizing carrying identification cards on our phones could have very bad consequences, including endangering our digital privacy.</p>
<p>Despite apparent support on the state and federal level, some have sounded the alarm on potential problems with digital IDs. In May, the American Civil Liberties Union released a <a href="https://www.aclu.org/report/identity-crisis-what-digital-drivers-licenses-could-mean-privacy-equity-and-freedom">detailed report</a> raising issues about a digital state ID system, including concerns about police access to users’ phones, privacy, and surveillance risks, and the possibility that people will one day be coerced into downloading government apps. The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project also obtained a contract revealing that the state of New York has bigger plans for its Excelsior Pass than it initially disclosed, which could reveal the risks of similar digital ID programs.</p>
<p>“It’s hard to trust the claim from officials that these apps are only going to do X or Y,” Albert Fox Cahn, an attorney at the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, warned in June, pointing to the potential expansion of the Excelsior Pass. “We see this clear pattern of them being installed for one purpose and then expanded for another.”</p>
<p>The arrival of digital IDs shows how tech companies increasingly want to be involved in all the things you do with your physical wallet. Both iPhone and Android users can already store credit cards, plane tickets, and event tickets in digital wallets. Now, with the impending introduction of digital driver’s licenses, Apple is getting closer to making your physical wallet completely obsolete.</p>
<p>“To be fully free of your physical ID, there’s one more thing we need to bring to iPhone, and that’s your ID. So we’re bringing identity cards to Apple Wallet,” said Apple Vice President Jennifer Bailey at the company’s developer conference <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAywkPxRjTw&t=151s">on June 7</a>. “It’s that easy! Your ID information is now in Wallet.”</p>
<p>The federal government appears to support the idea. While the DHS is establishing new standards for the technology that powers digital IDs, the TSA is already working with Apple to accept a version of an iPhone-based digital ID that can be used in airports. Several states had previously laid the groundwork and rolling out digital driver’s licenses that could work with Apple Wallet (states are generally responsible for issuing ID cards in the US). In a statement on Wednesday, Bailey said that Apple was in communication with other states and that the company was “working to offer this nationwide in the future.”</p>

<p>Apple isn’t the first or only major tech company trying to bring digital IDs to smartphones. Google has also been working on a system for a <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/you-could-store-a-digital-drivers-license-on-your-phone-soon-heres-how-it-works/">digital driver’s license</a>, and last fall, the company detailed new privacy and security standards for developers to <a href="https://security.googleblog.com/2020/10/privacy-preserving-features-in-mobile.html">handle identity documents</a> on mobile devices. IBM has also been researching digital driver’s licenses and expressed enthusiasm for how they <a href="https://www.ibm.com/blogs/blockchain/2016/05/secure-verifiable-anywhere-anytime-digital-drivers-licenses/">might rely on blockchain technology</a>.</p>
<p>A French security company called Idemia has already launched digital IDs in partnership with several US states, including <a href="https://statescoop.com/arizona-digital-drivers-license-idemia/">Arizona</a> and <a href="https://www.idemia.com/press-release/idemia-unveils-next-generation-mobile-id-oklahoma-2021-01-19">Oklahoma</a>. The company argues that digital IDs make it easier to quickly authenticate someone’s identity, while also allowing a person to share less of their personal information. With an app, for instance, users can opt to just share their age with someone verifying that someone is old enough to buy alcohol without also sharing their address, Idemia <a href="https://www.idemia.com/mobile-id">explains on its website</a>.</p>
<p>The technology behind digital IDs is inevitably not dissimilar to the tech behind vaccine passports. Opponents to vaccine passports, however, have argued that requiring detailed health information to enter businesses and other public areas hurts people’s privacy and liberty. Nevertheless, some states that have banned vaccine passports are charging ahead with digital driver’s licenses.</p>
<p>In Florida, <a href="https://www.flgov.com/2021/05/03/governor-ron-desantis-signs-landmark-legislation-to-ban-vaccine-passports-and-stem-government-overreach/">where Gov. Ron DeSantis has banned vaccine passports</a>, the DMV is <a href="https://www.secureidnews.com/news-item/florida-mobile-drivers-licenses-ready-to-launch/">expected</a> to launch its mobile state ID system soon, and in Texas, <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2021/06/07/texas-vaccine-passports-covid-19/">whose state legislature has restricted the use of vaccine passports</a>, lawmakers <a href="https://www.kvue.com/article/news/local/texas/texas-drivers-license-digital-bill-hb-273/269-7eeea031-4532-485a-91e5-2811df157722">are considering a pilot program</a> for digital driver’s licenses. Iowa, <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2021/05/20/iowa-gov-kim-reynolds-vaccine-passports-law-limiting-use-prove-covid-vaccination/5074442001/">which has also limited the use of vaccine passports</a>, also plans to launch a mobile ID system <a href="https://www.kcrg.com/2021/05/11/iowa-expected-to-launch-digital-drivers-license-by-end-of-year/">later this year</a>. In Nevada, where vaccine passports <a href="https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/politics-and-government/nevada/citing-current-efforts-rosen-opposes-vaccine-passports-2346770/">remain a contentious issue</a>, Gov. Steve Sisolak in May formally signed off on digital licenses, and the DMV says they could arrive <a href="https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/i-team-digital-drivers-licenses-could-come-to-nevada-within-years/">within just a few years</a>.</p>
<p>In any case, it’s clear that residents of several states will soon be able to store their driver’s license on their phone. What remains unclear is whether we’re headed for a country where there are 50 different digital driver’s licenses and 50 different opportunities for issues and problems.</p>

What banning abortion at 6 weeks really means

<p>A state law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott earlier this year <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2021/05/19/gov-abbott-signs-near-complete-ban-on-abortion-in-texas/">bans abortions</a> as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected. That’s as early as six weeks’ gestation, before many people know they are pregnant, making the bill a near-total ban on the procedure.</p>
<p>Earlier this week, abortion providers <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/01/politics/texas-abortion-supreme-court-sb8-roe-wade/index.html">asked the Supreme Court</a> to stop the ban from going into effect while legal cases continue. But the justices did not take action, allowing the six-week ban, which contains no exceptions for cases of rape or incest, to become the law of the land in Texas.</p>
<p>So-called heartbeat bills like Texas’s are not new. <a href="https://www.guttmacher.org/state-policy/explore/state-policies-later-abortions">At least eight</a> have passed in recent years, with a raft of states enacting the bans in 2019. But until the Texas law, no heartbeat bills have gone into effect — they have faced court challenges since they run directly counter to <em>Roe v. Wade</em>, the landmark 1973 decision that established the right to an abortion in America.</p>
<p>But <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/8/31/22650303/supreme-court-abortion-texas-sb8-jackson-roe-wade-greg-abbott">as Vox’s Ian Millhiser explains</a>, the Texas bill was intentionally written to prevent courts from blocking it before it takes effect. Rather than having state officials enforce the abortion ban, the bill essentially empowers private citizens to do so by suing abortion providers, <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2021/05/18/texas-heartbeat-bill-abortions-law/">according to the Texas Tribune</a>. This unusual provision makes it harder for abortion-rights groups to sue state officials to block the law, since they aren’t technically the ones who will enforce it.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/8/31/22650303/supreme-court-abortion-texas-sb8-jackson-roe-wade-greg-abbott">Regardless, legal challenges to the Texas law</a> remain ongoing, and it could still be struck down. But for now, abortion providers in Texas <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/09/01/1033202132/texas-abortion-ban-what-happens-next">say they will abide by the law</a>, and most Texans will likely need to travel out of state for an abortion — if they can afford to do so.</p>
<p>Ultimately, what’s happening in Texas could foreshadow the collapse of abortion access across much of the country. If the six-week ban continues to hold up in court, anti-abortion lawmakers elsewhere are likely to pass their own versions, banning abortion at six weeks or even earlier. And later this year, the Supreme Court will hear <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization</em>, a challenge to a 15-week abortion ban in Mississippi that could provide another opportunity to strike down <em>Roe v. Wade</em>.</p>
<p>Heartbeat bills around the country are based on model legislation written by <a href="http://www.f2a.org/">Faith2Action</a>, which bills itself as “the nation’s largest network of pro-family groups.”</p>
<p>“While not the beginning of life, the heartbeat is the universally recognized indicator of life,” the group <a href="https://secure6.afo.net/f2a/includes/QnA_support.pdf">states in an FAQ</a> on its website.</p>
<p>The model legislation says that if a patient is seeking an abortion, the doctor must first determine whether the fetus has a heartbeat. If a heartbeat is present, the doctor is prohibited from performing an abortion, unless it is necessary to save the mother’s life or “to prevent a serious risk of the substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function.”</p>
<p>The bills generally do not cite a specific gestational time limit for abortions, but reproductive rights groups say the bills amount to a ban on abortion at about six weeks’ gestation. That’s when a doctor can detect “a flicker of cardiac motion” on a transvaginal ultrasound, according to Catherine Romanos, a doctor who performs abortions in Ohio and a fellow with the group Physicians for Reproductive Health.</p>
<p>Some reproductive rights groups argue that the term “heartbeat” bill is a misnomer, since the fetus does not yet have a heart at six weeks’ gestation — the cardiac activity detectable at that time comes from tissue called the fetal pole, as <a href="https://drjengunter.com/2016/12/11/dear-press-stop-calling-them-heartbeat-bills-and-call-them-fetal-pole-cardiac-activity-bills/">OB-GYN Jen Gunter has written</a>. <a href="https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/blog/dont-call-6-week-abortion-bans-heartbeat-bills-heres-why">Planned Parenthood</a> refers to the bills as six-week bans.</p>
<p>Under the Texas law, patients would have to <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/4/19/18412384/abortion-heartbeat-bill-georgia-louisiana-ohio-2019">know their menstrual cycle well</a> and immediately recognize they are pregnant in order to get an abortion. They will also need to be able to travel to a clinic and get together the money for the procedure within the time allowed — six weeks’ gestation is just shortly after most pregnant people miss their first period, meaning many people don’t know they are pregnant at this stage. The law <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2021/05/18/texas-heartbeat-bill-abortions-law/">contains an exception for medical emergencies</a>, but not for a pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.</p>
<p>The law also includes a provision not seen in previous bans, allowing any private citizen to sue an abortion provider or anyone who “aids and abets” a violation of the ban, <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2021/05/19/gov-abbott-signs-near-complete-ban-on-abortion-in-texas/">according to the Dallas Morning News</a>. The apparent aim of this provision is to make it harder for abortion-rights groups to challenge the law because it is individuals, not the state, who will have the job of enforcing it.</p>
<p>“Planned Parenthood can’t go to court and sue Attorney General [Ken] Paxton like they usually would because he has no role in enforcing the statute. They have to basically sit and wait to be sued,” Josh Blackman, a constitutional law professor at South Texas College of Law Houston, <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2021/05/18/texas-heartbeat-bill-abortions-law/">told the Texas Tribune</a>.</p>
<p>The law also does not require that a person have any connection to the abortion provider in order to sue, which <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/05/19/998237349/the-governor-of-texas-has-signed-a-law-that-bans-abortion-as-early-as-6-weeks">some fear</a> could open up clinics — and even <a href="https://twitter.com/laurenarankin/status/1395109224875663360">individual patients</a> — to abuse through rounds of endless lawsuits.</p>
<p>Reproductive rights groups have pledged to fight the law in any case, and this week, abortion providers <a href="https://www.scotusblog.com/2021/08/abortion-providers-ask-court-to-block-texas-ban-on-abortion-beginning-at-six-weeks-of-pregnancy/">filed an emergency application</a> asking the Supreme Court to stop the law from going into effect while legal challenges continued. But the Court did not act on the application, allowing the ban to become law on Wednesday morning.</p>
<p>The law is deeply concerning for abortion-rights groups in Texas, now faced with the prospect of getting nearly all abortion-seekers out of state for the procedure. And it’s a victory for a strategy that has been percolating in the anti-abortion movement for years but has only recently seen signs of success.</p>
<p>The first bill based on Faith2Action’s model legislation was introduced in Ohio in 2011. It didn’t pass. While similar laws successfully passed in <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/nd-governor-approves-6-week-abortion-ban-says-constitutionality-is-open-question/">North Dakota</a> and <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/arkansas-12-week-abortion-ban_n_2821739">Arkansas</a> in 2013, the tactic was not embraced by all anti-abortion groups. Ohio Right to Life was neutral on the issue until 2018, preferring to back less sweeping restrictions like a <a href="https://www.vox.com/identities/2016/12/13/13902238/ohio-abortion-ban-heartbeat-20-week-john-kasich">20-week ban</a>.</p>
<p>But after the election of President Trump, who promised to appoint Supreme Court justices to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade</em>, anti-abortion groups began <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/3/22/17143454/trump-ohio-heartbeat-bill-abortion-ban-mississippi">backing more restrictive laws</a>. “Heartbeat” bills in particular began to proliferate at the state level in 2018, with Iowa <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2018/05/02/iowa-lawmakers-just-passed-one-of-the-most-restrictive-abortion-bills-in-the-u-s/">passing its version in May of that year</a>.</p>
<p>Similar bills later passed in Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, Ohio, Georgia, and elsewhere. With the exception of Texas, none of these are in effect, with most facing court challenges from reproductive-rights groups.</p>
<p>But a court battle is precisely what some supporters of the bills are hoping for. Some legislators backing the heartbeat bills have said they see them as potential challenges to <em>Roe v. Wade</em>, which, together with the 1992 decision <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey</em>, prohibits states from banning abortion before a fetus can survive outside the womb (a point known as viability). A six-week ban falls well before that limit.</p>
<p>Sponsors of some such bans have been explicit about their desire to challenge <em>Roe</em>. “The science and technology have significantly advanced since 1973,” <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2018/05/01/roe-v-wade-fetal-heartbeat-lawsuit-supreme-court-iowa-republican/442359002/">said Iowa state Rep. Shannon Lundgren</a>, the floor manager of the Iowa bill, in 2018. “It is time for the Supreme Court to weigh in on the issue of life.”</p>
<p>The Supreme Court has yet to take up a case involving a six-week ban. However, in May, <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/5/17/22233440/supreme-court-abortion-roe-wade-dobbs-jackson-womens-health-amy-coney-barrett">the Court announced</a> it would hear <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/5/17/22233440/supreme-court-abortion-roe-wade-dobbs-jackson-womens-health-amy-coney-barrett"><em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization</em></a>, a case involving a Mississippi law banning most abortions after 15 weeks. That case will be the first abortion case to be fully briefed and argued before the Court since the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a Trump nominee who has been vocal in her opposition to abortion. And the case could provide an opportunity to revisit and potentially do away with the viability standard, allowing more states to ban abortion at six weeks or before.</p>
<p><em>Dobbs</em> is likely to be decided next summer. But even before that, patients and providers in Texas are faced with a ban on abortions unseen in America since the days before <em>Roe</em>. And what’s happening there could be a preview of what’s coming nationwide as legislators enact stricter and stricter laws to curb abortion — and courts continue to allow them to do so.</p>
