Anti-mask hysterics at Tennessee school board meeting show how basic public health is now polarizing

On August 5 in North Carolina, anti-maskers erupted in similar hysterics after the Buncombe County Board of Education <a href="https://www.citizen-times.com/story/news/2021/08/05/protesters-object-buncombe-county-schools-mask-mandate-council-meeting-north-carolina/5507110001/">voted to continue</a> a district-wide mask mandate.</p> <p>As schools resume, the delta variant is driving a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/10/technology/covid-delta-misinformation-surge.html">throughout the country</a> — and especially in places like Tennessee, where vaccination rates remain low. Yet even as <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/kids-sick-covid-are-filling-children-s-hospitals-areas-seeing-n1276238">hospitalization numbers for children rise</a>, anti-maskers are lashing out at officials who are trying to keep students, teachers, and faculty safe while allowing schools to open for in-person instruction.</p> <p>It’s worth noting that kids under 12 years old — roughly sixth-graders and younger — aren’t currently eligible to be vaccinated. And the spread of the delta variant presents risks even for vaccinated teachers and staff, since it has demonstrated <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/8/11/22611272/what-breakthrough-covid-19-feels-like">a rare but still significant ability</a> to infect vaccinated people. (Cases among vaccinated people are generally much milder than those among the unvaccinated, however, and as my colleague German Lopez recently <a href="https://www.vox.com/22602039/breakthrough-cases-covid-19-delta-variant-masks-vaccines">detailed</a>, unvaccinated people continue to make up the vast majority of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.)</p> <p>Scientific studies have repeatedly demonstrated that <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/118/4/e2014564118">face masks are effective</a> in reducing the transmission of airborne viruses, including the coronavirus that causes Covid-19. Yet, dating back at least to April 2020 — when then-President Donald Trump announced he didn’t intend to follow <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/02/us/politics/donald-trump-masks.html">his own government’s guidance</a> to mask up — and continuing through Trump’s repeated disparagement of Joe Biden for diligently wearing them on the campaign trail, mask-wearing has become an increasingly politicized indicator of how seriously one takes a pandemic that has now killed <a href="https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html">more than 618,000 Americans</a>.</p> <p>But while anti-maskers may be extremely loud, they appear to be in the minority. <a href="https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/poll-finding/kff-covid-19-vaccine-monitor-parents-and-the-pandemic/">Polling by the Kaiser Family Foundation</a> released Wednesday found that 63 percent of parents of school-aged children believe unvaccinated students and faculty should be required to wear masks at school. Along similar lines, despite all of the commotion at Tuesday’s meeting, Williamson County Schools Board of Education chair Nancy Garrett <a href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/williamson/2021/08/10/williamson-county-schools-board-meeting-covid-19-protocols-live/5540109001/">said</a> she received 781 emails from people in favor of the mask mandate and just 348 from those who oppose it. As Josh Kraushaar at the National Journal <a href="https://twitter.com/HotlineJosh/status/1425303056183447565">noted</a>, that data point — coming from a suburban county where Trump won 62 percent of the vote in the 2020 election — suggests mask mandates are generally popular even in some red areas.</p> <p>Nevertheless, railing against mask mandates even as Covid cases spike has proven to be a good way for Republican politicians to fire up their base. Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida — two of the hardest-hit states during the recent case surge — recently moved to ban mask mandates altogether, much to the ire of local officials who are <a href="https://talkingpointsmemo.com/live-blog/local-school-officials-spar-with-state-gop-over-mask-mandate-bans">challenging them in courts</a>.</p> <p>Tennessee, meanwhile, has been at the forefront not only of Republican efforts to turn masks into a wedge issue, but also of GOP efforts to translate vaccine skepticism into policy. As I <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/7/15/22577405/tennessee-covid-vaccines-republicans-michelle-fiscus">detailed</a> in July, the public health department in Tennessee, under pressure from increasingly vaccine-skeptical Republican legislators, fired its top vaccine official, then prohibited state officials from engaging in any form of vaccine outreach to minors. Those moves came amid an ongoing wave of Covid cases in the state, with hospitalizations having increased by <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/tennessee-covid-cases.html">more than 100 percent</a> in the last two weeks. (<a href="https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/public-health/states-ranked-by-percentage-of-population-vaccinated-march-15.html">Just under 40 percent</a> of Tennesseans have been fully vaccinated as of August 10.)</p> <p>Unsurprisingly, following Tuesday’s meeting, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) posted a tweet endorsing the cause of parents resisting mask mandates, <a href="https://twitter.com/MarshaBlackburn/status/1425292214402433027">writing</a>, “No masks for kids!”</p> <p>While a number of public health experts and workers spoke out at Tuesday’s meeting on behalf of masks — “We would love it is if there was another way out of this pandemic, but what we have right now a way to vaccinate our students and our public and we can wear masks until all of that happens,” <a href="https://www.wsmv.com/news/williamson_county/williamson-county-school-board-votes-in-favor-of-masks-after-heated-specially-called-meeting/article_313bb946-fa1f-11eb-b738-a3c87c94c8f5.html">said</a> one parent, pediatrician Dr. Jim Keffer — other developments during the proceedings highlighted that working in public health doesn’t necessarily mean someone understands best practices when it comes to basic public health.</p> <p>Outside Tuesday’s meeting, a reporter with the liberal Tennessee Holler talked to an anti-mask nurse who <a href="https://twitter.com/TheTNHoller/status/1425224731607932939">proclaimed</a>, “There’s no pandemic.” That nurse, wearing his scrubs, was later <a href="https://twitter.com/brinleyhineman/status/1425295786284404737">escorted</a> out of the meeting by a police officer.</p> <p>Meanwhile, Tennessee Stands — one of the groups driving the anti-mask demonstrations in the state — on Wednesday urged its nearly 13,000 Facebook followers to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/tennesseestands/posts/889225461703252">refuse to comply</a> with school mask mandates like the one just approved in Williamson County.</p> <br /> <br /> source <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/8/11/22620254/williamson-county-school-board-meeting-franklin-tennessee-mask-mandate">https://www.vox.com/2021/8/11/22620254/williamson-county-school-board-meeting-franklin-tennessee-mask-mandate</a>

Where extreme weather is getting even worse, in one map

<p>Humans have warmed the planet by an average of <a href="https://public.wmo.int/en/media/press-release/2020-was-one-of-three-warmest-years-record">1.2 degrees Celsius</a> since industrialization began in the 19th century. This small-sounding change has <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/4/14/22382445/california-wildfires-2021-drought-megadrought-climate-change-gavin-newsom-new-mexico">helped fuel severe wildfires</a>, record-breaking <a href="https://www.vox.com/22538401/heat-wave-record-temperature-extreme-climate-change-drought">heatwaves</a>, <a href="https://www.vox.com/22577431/germany-flooding-europe-climate-change">floods</a>, and an ever-growing list of other disasters.</p> <p>What’s worrying is that Earth will continue to heat up — likely past 1.5 degrees — even if humans slash fossil fuel emissions immediately, according to <a href="https://www.vox.com/22613027/un-ipcc-climate-change-report-ar6-disaster">a landmark UN climate report released this week</a>. So does that mean weather will get worse, too?</p> <p>Now you can see for yourself. This week, alongside its report, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) launched <a href="https://interactive-atlas.ipcc.ch/regional-information#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">a new mapping tool</a> that shows how weather around the world will change under different greenhouse gas emissions scenarios.</p> <p>While the IPCC Interactive Atlas didn’t get as much attention as <a href="https://www.vox.com/22613027/un-ipcc-climate-change-report-ar6-disaster">harrowing news stories about the report itself</a>, it’s a striking tool that projects regional temperature, rainfall, snowfall, and even sea level rise. It’s powered by the same models that produced data for the report, and represents some of the best climate science out there in visual form.</p> <p>The technology behind the map is impressive, too. The atlas took three years to make and “over 1.5 million hours of computing time” on a supercomputer, according to Juan José Sáenz de la Torre, a spokesperson for Predictia, the company that helped build the atlas.</p> <p>The map tries to strike a balance between the simplicity of, say, Google Maps, and a highly specialized scientific tool. The IPCC has received feedback that it’s “too dorky,” so it may update the user interface, said Linda Mearns, a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research who was involved in developing the tool. At the same time, its features might be too limited for the most sophisticated users, said Michael E. Mann, a professor of atmospheric science at Pennsylvania State University. The atlas doesn’t, for example, display data on the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events like fires and floods.</p> <p>Nonetheless, it’s a major step beyond the static graphics in the IPCC report. And once you get a hang of it, you can clearly see the disastrous impact of climate change on every corner of the planet — from rising temperatures to rising seas — if countries and fossil fuel companies don’t quickly cut their carbon footprint.</p> <p>Here’s how to use the atlas, and some of the insights it reveals.</p> <h4>The basics</h4> <ol> <li>Go to <a href="https://interactive-atlas.ipcc.ch/">this website</a>, and click on the box “regional information.” That will take you to the map.</li> <li>By default, you’ll see the world under an average of 2°C of warming, compared to a historical baseline (1850 to 1990). You’ll notice that the Arctic and the American West, for example, are darker shades of red, indicating that they’re likely to warm faster than other areas under this scenario.</li> <li>From there, you have a lot of different features to play with. Check out the tab “variable,” which allows you to choose what appears on the map — change in average temperature, precipitation, snowfall, and so on. You can also select sea level rise and other ocean variables.</li> <li>To lay out different climate scenarios, you can use the tab “value and period.” Again, the default is a world under 2°C of warming, but to factor in the possibility that humans will drastically reduce their emissions (or not), you can change it to 1.5, 3, or 4°C. You can also set the scenario according to a time period (such as 2081 to 2100) under one of four greenhouse gas emissions scenarios <a href="https://www.vox.com/22613027/un-ipcc-climate-change-report-ar6-disaster">laid out in the IPCC report</a>.</li> <li>If you want more regional information — such as to see what’s happening in the Western US — there are a few things you can do beyond zooming in. First, under the “dataset” tab, choose a “CORDEX” for whatever area you’re interested in (such as CORDEX North America). CORDEX models are more accurate on a regional scale than the default model, which is global. Then click on a specific region and a window will appear at the bottom of the map, with all kinds of information for that area.</li> </ol> <h4>Other neat features</h4> <p>There are a few additional features worth pointing out, such as the side-by-side function, which shows two different climate scenarios next to each other on a map. For example, you can compare the likely change in rainfall under 1.5 vs. 3°C of warming. To use this feature, click the “duplicate map” button on the right-hand side of the screen.</p> <p>There’s also a neat graphing tool called seasonal stripes, which breaks down weather and climate changes by season. You can find this feature by clicking a region and selecting the “seasonal stripes” tab. (The tab to the left of it is neat, too. Each row represents the results of a different model.)</p> <p>Lastly, check out the “point information” button on the right side of the map. It allows you to get information on whatever variable you’ve selected by just clicking anywhere on the atlas. There are a lot of other features, which you can learn about <a href="https://interactive-atlas.ipcc.ch/regional-information/guidance">here</a>.</p> <p>The IPCC report reveals in new detail just how connected extreme weather and climate change really are. The chance of intense heatwaves, torrential rainfall, and drought is likely to increase with each degree the planet warms, the authors wrote.</p> <p>Consider the American West. It will become much, much warmer as global temperatures rise, the map shows. How do writers find their ideas and get their assignments? How do they overcome the challenges of researching and reporting? How do they navigate their careers? What happens when they sit down to face a blank screen? What are the struggles that readers never see?</p> <p>Over the years we’ve talked through these questions and many others with everyone from early-career writers to famous authors. We’ve learned about creating <em>This American Life</em> from Ira Glass, covering race in America from Ta-Nehisi Coates and Nikole Hannah-Jones, going from underdog to target from Malcolm Gladwell, and constructing narratives from Michael Lewis. We’ve given our audience a window into the psychological toll of war and trauma reporting, the rejection that comes with breaking into a creative industry, and the joy of finding the perfect true story to tell.</p> <p>Even four hundred and fifty episodes in, we haven’t come close to exhausting our interest —or our guest list. After a lost pandemic year, live theater is back

Broadway is still keeping one eye on plans for a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/broadway-shows-tickets-reopening-guide.html">September opening</a> and another on <a href="https://www.vox.com/coronavirus-covid19/2021/8/5/22608142/us-covid-19-cases-deaths-delta-variant-vaccines">delta’s rising transmission rates</a>, but the smaller theaters are carefully, warily beginning to crack open their doors. At one of them — Central Park’s iconic open-air Delacorte Theater — Shakespeare in the Park has flung its arms wide for Saheem Ali’s exuberant new all-Black production of <em>Merry Wives</em>.</p> <p>“A celebration of Black joy and vitality,” reads one side of the playbill. “Welcome back New York,” reads the other.</p> <p>Last summer, the Delacorte went dark for the first time in its 67-year history. This summer, its new production <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/06/theater/merry-wives-shakespeare-in-the-park.html">has some strictures</a>. The show runs for just 110 minutes, so as to avoid an intermission and the attendant mingling. There are only 12 actors in the company, so that no one has to share a dressing room. Audience members are only allowed to doff their masks if they’ve shown proof of vaccination and are seated in the immunized section, while attendees in the unvaccinated sections are seated in socially distanced pods and required to mask themselves when not eating or drinking.</p> <p>Even with all these precautions, the show has had to cancel multiple performances <a href="https://deadline.com/2021/07/merry-wives-cancellation-covid-test-shakespeare-in-the-park-new-york-1234798061/">after a company member was diagnosed with Covid-19</a>.</p> <p>But inside the Delacorte, the mood is giddy. Live theater is back at last, and the atmosphere is electric with relief.</p> <p>Elegantly adapted from Shakespeare’s <em>Merry Wives of Windsor</em> by Jocelyn Bioh, <em>Merry Wives</em> tells the story of the exploits of John Falstaff, id-driven drunk and one of Shakespeare’s greatest comic creations, and the women in whom he meets his match. Falstaff plans to seduce two of his neighbors’ wives and steal their husbands’ money — but the women manage to flip the script on both Falstaff and their jealous spouses, with much, well, merriment.</p> <p>Shakespeare’s <em>Merry Wives of Windsor</em> is widely considered one of the Bard’s lesser comedies. Shakespeare invented Falstaff to be Prince Hal’s drinking buddy in <em>Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2</em>, and legend has it that he spun off Falstaff into <em>Merry Wives of Windsor</em> at Queen Elizabeth’s special request. (“I should like to see Falstaff in love,” Elizabeth says in the apocryphal story.) In any case, Shakespeare’s <em>Merry Wives</em> has the hallmarks of a play written very quickly: Falstaff’s jokes aren’t as funny or as complex as they were in the <em>Henry</em> plays, and there’s a sour and close-minded xenophobia underlying much of the humor.</p> <p>But Bioh and Ali’s adaptation preserves the broad slapstick comedy of Shakespeare’s original — and the unusually rich roles it offers multiple actresses — while also bringing a new sweetness and urgency to the production. They place <em>Merry Wives</em> in Harlem’s African immigrant enclaves, so that their characters mix their Shakespearean blank verse with frequent references to palm wine and plantains. (Bioh’s revised script often leaves Shakespeare’s words intact, but she gently updates the language wherever, she’s said, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/06/theater/merry-wives-shakespeare-in-the-park.html">she thinks her Ghanian family would get confused</a>, as well as whenever she wants to provide an extra thematic punch.) This <em>Merry Wives</em> is a love letter to the African diaspora.</p> <p>The two wives plot their revenge on Falstaff while getting their hair braided at the Senegalese beauty parlor. A neighborhood quarrel is resolved over a meal of roast goat. The play’s comic climax — an elaborate farce in which the wives convince Falstaff that he is surrounded by spirits sent to vex him — becomes a tour-de-force celebration of West African ritual.</p> <p>That celebration takes on extra poignancy considering the past year. “We lived a time where we were pushed inside,” chants spirit leader Mama Quickly (a terrific Shola Adewusi). “New meaning to life we all understand, that love is present wherever we land.”</p> <p>“It’s been a long, hard year,” explains Falstaff (Jacob Ming-Trent). “So can you blame me for tryna get with Madam Page and Madam Ford? You know? Those are some MERRY WIVES!”</p> <p>The sheer glee of this production beams out across all of Central Park: In a breathing spell amid the horrors of the pandemic, in a quiet period among America’s continued racial reckoning, here is a witty, loving, vibrant celebration of joy and community and Blackness, presented with the force and energy only live theater can provide.</p> <p>It’s a reminder of what we stand to gain if live theater comes back across the country, and we’re once more able to sit in stillness in the dark together: this strengthening, this spirit. What happens when a group of people come together and build, in real time and right in front of the rest of us, something bigger than themselves.</p> <p>As <em>Merry Wives</em> wends to its close, Beowulf Boritt’s intricate street set folds in on itself, the brick storefronts of a Harlem block stowing themselves away in the wings like cards put back in a deck. The clear green space of Central Park emerges from behind the set, and in the distance the skyscrapers of Manhattan glitter. It’s an invitation: We can take the joy and the love of <em>Merry Wives</em> out of the theater, out into the park, the city, the rest of the world. Thanks to you and your great family for this visit, Elon!," Steinbach said.</p> <p>Steinbach's comments come after public flight data had earlier shown the arrival of Musk's jet in Germany, where Tesla is facing delays in trying to bring the new manufacturing site on stream.</p> <p>Armin Laschet, the conservative candidate to succeed Angela Merkel as chancellor, is scheduled to visit Tesla's site, located in Gruenheide near Berlin, on Friday to meet with local staff as part of his election campaign.</p> <p>Due to environmental resistance and red tape, it remains unclear when the first vehicles will roll off the production line at the site.</p> <p>Tesla has already pushed back the expected opening to late 2021.
