Canada will extend its ban on arriving passenger flights from India to September 21 because of the risks posed by COVID-19, the federal transport ministry said in a statement on Monday.

London:
London's famous Tower Bridge got stuck in its open position for the second time in a year due to a technical fault on Monday, leading to tail-backs of road traffic trying to cross the River Thames.
The bridge, which allows boats to pass underneath by raising the road which crosses it, got stuck shortly before 2:45pm (1345 GMT), a spokeswoman for the City of London police force said.
Since 1976, the bridge's two arms, or bascules, have been operated by engines powered by oil and electricity, replacing the original steam-powered ones that dated back to the 19th century.
"Due to a technical issue, Tower Bridge is currently stuck in a raised position," a spokesman for the City of London Corporation, which owns the bridge, said. "We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."
It was the second time in a year that the bridge got stuck. In August 2020, it was closed for more 24 hours when its bascules jammed in an open position.

Washington:
The Pentagon will make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for all members of the US military by mid-September, according to a memo from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Monday.
Austin said he will issue an order making vaccines mandatory across all the services by September 15, or earlier if the Pfizer or other vaccines get full approval from the US Food and Drug Administration before then, the memo said.
President Joe Biden released a statement "strongly" supporting the decision, saying: "These vaccines save lives."
Because the Covid vaccines have only had emergency approval, the US military has until now not forced the troops to have them, as it does for other inoculations.
Over half of the 2.5 million active duty troops and national guard have been vaccinated, according to Pentagon statistics.
That has left US officials concerned over the potential for the virus to hurt military readiness.
Austin said in the memo that before the vaccination order is made, the military would "also be keeping a close eye on infection rates -- which are on the rise now due to the Delta variant -- and the impact these rates might have on our readiness."
"I will not hesitate to act sooner or recommend a different course to the president if I feel the need to do so," he said.

Moscow:
Nine coronavirus patients died in a Russian hospital in the southern city of Vladikavkaz after an oxygen pipe burst underground, cutting supply to an intensive care ward, Russian news agencies reported on Monday.
"Nine patients with coronavirus died due to a lack of oxygen," the TASS news agency cited the local health ministry as saying.
"A total of 71 people were in intensive care, not all were (receiving) oxygen supply," TASS quoted the ministry as saying.
Regional authorities have agreed with the defence ministry to supply oxygen to all of the city's hospitals from the town of Mozdok, around 80 kms (50 miles) north of Vladikavkaz, RIA reported.
"There was a burst in the oxygen pipe from the reservoir, which is underground, and the oxygen supply was stopped," acting head of the North Ossetia region, where Vladikavkaz is located, was cited by RIA news agency as saying.
"Medical staff has started to connect the patients who are on ventilators to oxygen tanks. Oxygen tanks have started to arrive," acting head of North Ossetia Sergei Menyailo said.

Coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in the United States are at a six-month high, fueled by the rapid spread of the Delta variant across swathes of the country grappling with low vaccination rates.
Nationwide, COVID-19 cases have averaged 100,000 for three days in a row, up 35% over the past week, according to a Reuters tally of public health data. The surge of the disease was strongest in Louisiana, Florida and Arkansas.
Hospitalizations rose 40% and deaths, a lagging indicator, registered an 18% uptick in the past week with the most fatalities by population in Arkansas.
The intensifying spread of the pandemic has led to cancellation of some large high-profile events. One notable exception is an annual motorcycle rally in South Dakota which has been proceeding as planned.
Florida set records for hospitalizations for eight days in a row, according to the analysis. In that state, most students are due back in the classroom this week as some school districts debate whether to require masks for pupils.
The head of the nation's second-largest teachers' union on Sunday announced a shift in course by backing mandated vaccinations for U.S. teachers in an effort to protect students who are too young to be inoculated.
The number of children hospitalized with COVID-19 is rising across the country, a trend health experts attribute to the Delta variant being more likely to infect children than the original Alpha strain.
With the virus once again upending Americans' lives after a brief summer lull, the push to vaccinate those still reluctant has gained fresh momentum.
States including California, New York and Virginia have mandated vaccinations or weekly testing for state employees, as well as several cities.
The administration of President Joe Biden set new rules late last month requiring federal workers to provide proof of vaccination or face regular testing, mask mandates and travel restrictions.
In the private sector, a growing number of companies are also mandating COVID-19 vaccinations. United Airlines, meatpacker Tyson Foods Inc and Microsoft are requiring employees get vaccinated.
STURGIS CROWDS
The evolving pandemic and the rapid community spread spurred by the Delta variant have already prompted the cancellation of some large-scale events. Last week, organizers canceled the New York Auto Show that had been set for later this month.
The New Orleans Jazz Fest was canceled for the second straight year as Louisiana fights a severe outbreak.
But fears about the Delta variant seem to not have dampened the mood in Sturgis, a small town in South Dakota that welcomes hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
This year's gathering, taking place Aug. 6-15, might already be attracting record crowds.
"It is one of the biggest crowds I have seen," Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin said in an email. "I think there will definitely be some spread."
The city of Sturgis has partnered with health officials to provide COVID-19 self-test kits to rally-goes but the event does not require proof of vaccination or mask-wearing.
Last year, the rally became the super-spreader event that many feared it would become.
While cases and hospitalizations were relatively low in South Dakota when the event started on Aug. 7, 2020, three months later the state set a record for hospitalized COVID-19 patients and new infections.
In the month of November alone, the state lost 521 people to COVID-19, nearly three times the number of deaths reported in October, according to a Reuters tally.

Federal Judge Rules Norwegian Cruise Line Can Require Vaccine Passports In Florida

On Sunday, a federal judge sided with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.’s lawsuit challenging Florida’s vaccine passports ban, per a <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/norwegian-cruise-line-holdings-ltd-233800189.html">statement</a> from the company. 
U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams granted Norwegian’s request for a preliminary injunction in a 60-page ruling that blocks Florida’s ban for businesses to require customers or guests proof of vaccination before entry.

“Amid myriad, rapidly-changing requirements regarding quarantining and testing, there is one constant that facilitates cruise line customers’ access to advertised ports of call: documentary proof of vaccination will expedite passengers’ entry into virtually every single country and port where Plaintiffs intend to sail,” Williams wrote.

She said vaccine passports would allow the cruise line to “operate in the safest way possible with 100% vaccination of all guests and crew when sailing from Florida ports,” adding the decision was reached because Florida had failed to “provide a valid evidentiary, factual, or legal predicate” for the ban.
Williams also noted, “scientific research shows that cruise lines are hotbeds for COVID-19 transmission,” and the cruise operator “has demonstrated that public health will be jeopardized if it is required to suspend its vaccination requirement.”
The ruling comes less than a week before Norwegian Gem vessel will depart Miami – the first vessel in its fleet to sail from the port area since the pandemic halted the cruise industry last year. 
Williams’ decision is a blow for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has <a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/political/gov-ron-desantis-opposes-vaccine-passports-florida">consistently</a> fought against government-mandated masks, health passports, and other vaccine restrictions. 
Norwegian said it looked forward to sailing on Aug. 15. “This order will now allow the Company to operate in the safest way possible with 100% vaccination of all guests and crew when sailing from Florida ports,” it said.
