Has Charlie Hebdo Comic Mocking Drowned Syrian Child Gone Too Far?

<p>Charlie Hebdo, the shock French comic who creates art for the sole purpose of being offensive has released one of his most controversial images yet, and this time many people are saying that he has gone too far.</p>
<p>Hebdo is known for his insensitive anti-Muslim work and has been celebrated by some as a fighter for free speech, specifically due to the fact that he intentionally crosses the line with every comic he releases. However, now even some of his strongest supporters are now disgusted with his newest release, which actually mocks Aylan Kurdi, the Syrian child who was photographed after he had drowned and washed up on a beach last week.</p>
<p>The image was accompanied by the message: <em>“Welcome to the migrants… so close to the goal”, with a McDonalds billboard that said “Promotional offer: kids menu 2 for the price of 1.”</em></p>
<p>Hebdo commissioned Laurent “Riss” Sourisseau as the artist for the comic, the controversial artist responsible for the pictures earlier this year that sparked terrorist attacks in France. Also released with the gruesome image of the young Syrian child on the beach, was one of Jesus walking on water next to the boy while he was drowning.</p>
<p>This photo had the horrific message: <em>“Proof that Europe is Christian – Christians walk on water – Muslim kids drown.”</em></p>
<p>This piece may finally be the straw that broke the camel’s back, and may lose the support of the misguided followers that Hebdo still has. Sure, he does have the right to free speech, and can say whatever he wants. However, that does not mean that people actually have to support him and his racist and xenophobic artwork. If he has the freedom to put out work like this, then other people have the right to openly reject it.</p>

<p>Last month, researchers at Stanford University announced that they were able to create a form of yeast that produce a number of different psychoactive compounds, including THC, one of the primary components found in <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=marijuana" target="_blank">marijuana</a>. The scientists were also able to derive more mainstream painkillers like hydrocodone from the yeast.</p>
<p>The discovery is expected to be used in the development of pill based cannabis treatments that can be sold by <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=pharma" target="_blank">pharmaceutical companies.</a> Many companies are now attempting to find ways to market marijuana pills, like the Marinol and Cesamet medications that are already being prescribed.</p>
<p>Kevin Chen, the chief executive of Hyasynth Bio, one of the companies working to develop this technology, told <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/15/science/newly-risen-from-yeast-thc.html?_r=1" target="_blank">the New York Times</a> that he believes this could be a very important discovery.</p>
<p><em>“This is something that could literally change the lives of millions of people,</em>” he said.</p>
<p>With the drug war still raging on, many researchers are weary of cultivating cannabis, and this would allow them to have access to some of the compounds without breaking the law and growing the plant.</p>
<p><em>“They are in fear that these plants will be grown and will support some illegal farming,”</em> Dr. Oliver Kayser of Stanford said.</p>
<p>Many long-time marijuana users are apprehensive about attempts to put plants into pills, and many of them are not as excited as the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=scientist" target="_blank">scientists</a> and pharmaceutical companies are. Even so, it is true that more access to medical marijuana will make life a lot easier for many patients.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/syrian-president-says-us-and-europe-created-refugee-crisis-by-supporting-terrorism/as/" rel="attachment wp-att-40528"><img alt="as" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-40528" height="219" src="http://cdn9.trueactivist.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/as-400x219.jpg" width="400" /></a>In an interview this week, Syrian President Bashar Assad pointed out that the US and Europe are largely to blame for the <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=refugee" target="_blank">refugee crisis</a> that has intensified in recent weeks.</p>
<p>As Assad noted, the United States government and NATO have funded and trained the Syrian rebels who ended up becoming ISIS. The rebels have been attempting to take over the Syrian government, not to set the people of <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=syria" target="_blank">Syria</a> free, but to install their own dictatorship.</p>
<p>While Assad himself is a dictator just like every head of state throughout the world is, at least he was able to maintain a semblance of peace and stability before the country was overrun with western-backed terrorist rebels.</p>
<p><em>“It’s not about that Europe didn’t accept them or embrace them as refugees, it’s about not dealing with the cause. If you are worried about them, stop supporting terrorists. That’s what we think regarding the crisis. This is the core of the whole issue of refugees,”</em> Assad said.</p>
<p><em>“If you want to implement anything real, it’s impossible to do anything while you have people being killed, bloodletting hasn’t stopped, people feel insecure…I would like to take this opportunity to call on all forces to unite against terrorism, because it is the way to achieve the political objectives which we, as Syrians, want through dialogue and political action,”</em> he added.</p>
<p>His statements are correct, it has been admitted by US government officials, including President Obama, that the US has backed rebels in Syria. Those same rebels have later been identified as members of ISIS, and many of the weapons now used by <a href="http://www.trueactivist.com/?s=isis" target="_blank">ISIS</a> have been connected with the US as well.</p>

<p>The good news is that a new law that was passed this year in North Dakota requires police in the state to obtain a court order before using a drone for surveillance.</p>
<p>The bad news, however, is that according to an August 27 <a href="http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/08/new-law-permits-north-dakota-cop-drones-to-fire-bean-bag-rounds-from-the-sky/" rel="nofollow">Ars Technica article</a>, the same legislation allows local police to equip drones with non-lethal weapons such as tasers and utilize them for law enforcement:</p>
<p>Legal experts are very concerned that a new North Dakota law which allows law enforcement drones to be armed with so-called less-than-lethal weapons – including stun guns and beanbag rounds – could be highly problematic. The law, however, explicitly forbids lethal weapons.</p>
<p>Among other reasons, such weapons have been shown that they can, in fact, kill people.</p>
<p>According to research by The Guardian, 39 Americans have died this year alone at the hands of police wielding a Taser. Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that more than 20 North American cities are pursuing large silicone-based projectiles as yet another alternative weapon.</p>
<p>North Dakota is believed to be the first state in the union to allow such weapons aboard state and local police drones.</p>
<p>In a grim irony, the use of drones for tasering people does not require a court order, while surveillance, which will not physically harm an individual, does. It's a positive development to require the police to seek court approval to spy on people, but not when the tradeoff is the unsupervised use of painful and potentially deadly "non-lethal" weapons.</p>
<p>Ars Technica quotes Brian Owsley, a former federal judge and current law professor at the University of North Texas, objecting to the new law that took effect in August:</p>
<p>"Drones, like stingrays [or cell-site simulators], were designed for military applications and are now being sold by manufacturers for use by local law enforcement because they need to expand their market," he told Ars by e-mail.</p>
<p>"I question in what circumstance there would be a need for a use of force administered by a drone," Owsley said.</p>
<p>Owsley makes a couple of points worth expanding upon.</p>
<p>Firstly, he asserts that drone use expansion is due, in large part, to the need of military drone manufacturers to create a new market for their product. This exemplifies the dangers of an unrestrained "free market" approach to selling weaponry. Because a military-industrial-complex company wants to increase its profit, it creates a perceived need for drones and "non-lethal" weaponry where none exists. In doing so, it exposes the public to an increased danger of the use of excessive force by police, now in the form of unmanned technology attacking from the sky.</p>
<p>Secondly, Owsley implies that because local police drones with "non-lethal" weapons are unnecessary, cops would probably use them when there is no need to do so. One can also speculate that police officers might find it more convenient to “patrol” their beats from a room with a joystick and drone camera monitor than in a squad car.</p>
<p>North Dakota State Rep. Rick Becker, who originally sponsored the bill with the intention of it focusing mostly on the requirement of a surveillance warrant, was allegedly horrified when the law enforcement lobby – goosed on by the drone industry – hijacked the legislation.Representative Becker told Arts Technica that he worries about the desensitization that such a drone policy will create:</p>

<p>The gist of why I don't want the non-lethals allowed is the decision to use force on another citizen, the normal morals and process of thinking goes out the window when it's like you're playing a video game. It's dehumanized, it's depersonalized.</p>

<p>Mission creep is naturally a major concern here. Will the next step be permitting local law enforcement to use lethally armed drones? We all know where that ends up. Just ask the relatives of the estimated 2,500 people who have been killed by drone strikes authorized by President Obama.</p>
