Europe Will Be 50% Powered By Renewable Energy By 2030

Europe is steps ahead of the rest of the world in its initiative to ‘go green’, with the European Union committing to some of the boldest renewable energy goals out there. At present, its current goal is to source at least 27% of final energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030. However a new report from the EU commission (which was <a href="http://ift.tt/1FEIPVS">leaked to The Guardian</a>) shows that this goal is set to be far exceeded, with the EU nations sourcing an incredible 50% of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2030. 
As The Guardian <a href="http://ift.tt/1FEIPVS">shares</a>, about a quarter of the EU’s electricity comes from renewable sources at present. But the EU also has another goal of reducing carbon emissions by 40% of their 1990 levels, and notes that: “[r]eaching the European Union 2030 energy and climate objectives means the share of renewables is likely to reach 50% of installed electricity capacity.”

<a href="http://ift.tt/1IJsCAN">Inhabitat </a>summarizes that this means an overhaul of the continent’s electricity grid will need to come sooner than anticipated for it to keep pace with the transition to renewable energy sources. In addition, the commission’s report calls for “intraday cross-border power trading between countries so that renewable energy can be instantly dispatched to meet demand, without the need for storage.

British tourists, who survived <a href="http://ift.tt/1NIU1Xi" target="_blank">the massacre at Sousse</a> in Tunisia on June 27, have come out in defence of the Tunisians on the beach, and have revealed how local heroes formed a human shield to protect tourists from gunman Seifeddine Rezgui, who, after massacring 38 European tourists at the Riu Imperial Marhaba Hotel, headed towards the neighbouring Palm Marina hotel to claim more victims.

World’s Most Exclusive Website Is An Antithesis Of Open And Accessible Internet

Justin Foley, a web developer from Ohio, has designed a website that lets only one person in at a time, and only for 60 seconds. The world’s <a href="http://ift.tt/1yk03pi" target="_blank">MostExclusiveWebsite</a> allows varying levels of access based on a user’s Twitter followers.  The more followers you have, the more pages you can view. Currently, over 2500 people are in line to get access to the website and most of them have no real idea of what lies beyond the entry line. Every 60 seconds someone gets admitted, and the line shuffles forward. We also tried our luck, took our ticket for the 60-second window, but even after waiting in line for 30 minutes couldn’t access it.

Roughly one in nine actually make it inside the website, with most leaving before their number is called. “It just sort of came to me. Documentary Highlights Virunga’s story of ‘corruption, violence and bribery’

Last year, <a href="http://ift.tt/1KL8vqu" target="_blank">Virunga</a>, Africa’s oldest national park, came under serious threat and made international news. The park, which is a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most bio-diverse zone, not only in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but in the whole African continent, and its <a href="http://ift.tt/1LE7XAP" target="_blank">incredible pligh</a>t, inspired a team of journalists and filmmakers to document the regions beauty and fight for survival.

The Virunga national park is home to the world-famous <a href="http://ift.tt/1sfylIK" target="_blank">Mountain Gorillas</a>, making the park’s role in saving this endangered species crucial. Despite these facts, <a href="http://ift.tt/1CnJrUz" target="_blank">in 2007</a>, the Congolese ministry of hydrocarbons granted concessions (which cover around 85 percent of the parks surface) for oil exploration to European companies Total and Soco International.

Although Total later declared that it no longer intended on exploring the park for oil, Soco’s decision was not altered. The company then proceeded to state that the area given for oil exploration ‘Block V’, would not pose any direct threat to the Mountain Gorillas. However, what they failed to mention was that ‘Block V’ covered the most bio-diverse area within the entire park. The disruption of this bio-diverse area would significantly put dozens of other endangered species at risk, and ultimately alter the ecosystem of whole national park. <a href="http://ift.tt/1H1WYhD" target="_blank"><img alt="anon wear t-shirt" class=" size-full wp-image-24525 aligncenter" height="230" src="http://ift.tt/1IDEubY" width="300" /></a>
Virunga’s story of corruption, violence and bribery has been documented within the journalistic documentary-film, <a href="http://ift.tt/1qbZE4w" target="_blank">Virunga</a>. In the documentary,  “a small and embattled team of park rangers – including an ex-child soldier turned ranger, a caretaker of orphan gorillas and a dedicated conservationist – protect this UNESCO world heritage site from armed militia, poachers and the dark forces struggling to control Congo’s rich natural resources.”
Virunga represents human nature at its best and at its worst, and shows the “incredible true story of a group of courageous people risking their lives to build a better future in a part of Africa the world’s forgotten.”

German Village Produces 321% More Energy Than It Needs

It’s no surprise that the country that has kicked butt at the Solar Decathlon competition (to produce energy positive solar houses) year after year is the home to such a productive energy-efficient village. The village’s green initiative first started in 1997 when the village council decided that it should build new industries, keep initiatives local, bring in new revenue, and create no debt. Over the past 14 years, the community has equipped nine new community buildings with solar panels, built four biogas digesters (with a fifth in construction now) and installed seven windmills with two more on the way. In the village itself, 190 private households have solar panels while the district also benefits from three small hydro power plants, ecological flood control, and a natural waste water system.

All of these green systems means that despite only having a population of 2,600, Wildpoldsried produces 321 percent more energy than it needs – and it’s generating 4.0 million Euro (US $5.7 million) in annual revenue by selling it back to the national grid. It is no surprise to learn that small businesses have developed in the village specifically to provide services to the renewable energy installations.

Over the years the village’s green goals have been so successful that they have even crafted a mission statement — WIR–2020, Wildpoldsried Innovativ Richtungsweisend (Wildpoldsried Innovative Leadership). The village council hopes that it will inspire citizens to do their part for the environment and create green jobs and businesses for the local area.
