Mounting Evidence Putin Will Ignite WWIII

That began a <a href="http://observer.com/2015/12/whats-next-in-the-terrifying-unraveling-russo-turkish-crisis/">war of words</a> between Moscow and Ankara that ought to concern everyone, since the former has several thousand nuclear weapons and the latter is a member of NATO.</p> <p>Kremlin propaganda against Ankara has increased of late, setting the stage for further confrontation. As <a href="http://observer.com/2016/02/who-really-murdered-224-innocent-people-on-flight-9268/">I explained here last week</a>, Russian media outlets initially blamed the Sinai crash of Metrojet 9268 last autumn on the Islamic State, an atrocity which killed 224 innocents, nearly all of them Russians—a quite plausible claim. However, the Kremlin has abruptly shifted course and now blames the mass murder on Turkish ultranationalist terrorists, without any evidence provided to support that explosive assertion.</p> <p>Where things may be going between Russia and Turkey, ancient enemies who have warred many times over the centuries, was evidenced this week, when the Kremlin announced <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/09/world/europe/russia-anhttp:/www.nytimes.com/2016/02/09/world/europe/russia-announces-surprise-military-drills-in-south.html?_r=0nounces-surprise-military-drills-in-south.html?_r=0" target="_blank">large-scale surprise military exercises</a> in the regions of the country that are close to Turkey. Troops were moved to full combat readiness, the last stage before a shooting war, with Sergei Shoygu, the Russian defense minister, announcing on TV: “We began our surprise check of the military preparedness in the Southwest strategic direction.”</p> <p>That would be the direction of Turkey. These snap exercises involve the Southern Military District and the navy’s Black Sea Fleet, which are deeply involved in Russia’s not-so-secret secret war in eastern Ukraine. However, they also involve the navy’s Caspian Sea flotilla, which is nowhere near Ukraine.</p> <p class="pullquote">It’s difficult to see how Turkey could stand idly by as an ancient city of two million is crushed just fifty miles from its frontier.</p> <p>This implies that the snap exercises, which have been prominently featured in Kremlin media, are about Turkey, not Russia. This goes back to recent events on the ground in Syria, where the Kremlin-backed regime of Bashar al-Assad is slowly crushing its opponents, thanks to prodigious military help from both Russia and Iran. Regime forces are closing in on Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city, and 50,000 civilians<a href="http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/02/ceasefire-talk-50000-syrians-flee-aleppo-fighting-160210200848855.html" target="_blank">have already fled</a> the city in panic.</p> <p>The Russian military displays scant regard for civilian casualties. Mr. Putin’s air force killed almost 700 Syrian civilians last month (to compare, the Islamic State killed less than a hundred Syrian civilians in January), and if the crushing of the Chechen capital of Groznyy in 1994-95, when Russian forces killed roughly 35,000 Chechens, mostly civilians, in just six weeks, is any guide, residents of Aleppo are wise to get as far away as they can.</p> <p>Needless to add, such a bloody siege of Aleppo would set off a humanitarian crisis that the world could not fail to notice. It’s difficult to see how Turkey could stand idly by as an ancient city of two million is crushed just fifty miles from its frontier.</p> <p>That is precisely the scenario that has seasoned analysts worried. In Pentagon circles, among those who are watching the budding war between Moscow and Ankara, citations of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emdzsz_XvfA" target="_blank">this famous movie clip</a> are now commonplace. Distressingly, smart Russian analysts are thinking along similar lines.</p> <p>Today Pavel Felgenhauer published <a href="http://nv.ua/opinion/felgengauer/rossija-nachala-podgotovku-k-bolshoj-vojne-96316.html" target="_blank">his analysis</a> under the alarming title, “Russia has begun preparations for a major war,” and he marshals a convincing case that the snap exercises in the country’s southwest are really a cover for a shooting war with Turkey—and therefore with NATO too, if Ankara is perceived as defending itself and can assert its right to Article 5, collective self-defense, which obligates all members of the Atlantic Alliance to come to Turkey’s aid.</p> <p class="pullquote">‘It’s clear that there has to be some actual ‘redline’ for Mr. Obama, something that the United States cannot tolerate Russia doing – but where is it? If I don’t know, I’m sure the Kremlin doesn’t either.’</p> <p>As <em>The New York Times</em> <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/09/world/europe/russia-announces-surprise-military-drills-in-south.html?_r=0" target="_blank">dryly noted</a> of the Kremlin, “The [Defense] Ministry has ordered surprise maneuvers over the last three years as tensions between the East and West have worsened. The maneuvers have at times come as combat escalated in Ukraine and Syria.” In fact, using large-scale military exercises as a cover for aggression is old hat in Moscow. It was used during the August 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, which explains why NATO always got jumpy when Moscow held military exercises anywhere NATO territory, while snap exercises like this week inevitably caused Cold War panic.</p> <p>Mr. Felgenhauer paints an alarmingly plausible scenario. As rebel forces defend Aleppo in Stalingrad fashion, the Syrian military, with Russian help, commences a protracted siege of the city, employing massive firepower, which becomes a humanitarian nightmare of a kind not seen in decades, a tragedy that would dwarf the 1992-95 siege of Sarajevo. However, any Turkish move to lift that siege, even with international imprimatur, would quickly devolve into all-out war.</p> <p>Mr. Felgenhauer minces no words about this: “Russia has begun the deployment of forces and resources for a major war with Turkey.” Mr. Putin has decided to let his client, the Assad regime, win its bloody civil war, first in the north around Aleppo, and any moves by Turkey or NATO to stop them will be met with force. So far, President Barack Obama has let Mr. Putin do whatever he likes in Syria, no matter the cost in innocent lives, so the Kremlin has no reason to think that will change.</p> <p>The Yom Kippur War of October 1973, when the United States and the Soviet Union came alarmingly close to great power war, is cited as an ominous precedent by Mr. Felgenhauer—albeit one that ended happily when nuclear war was averted thanks to wise diplomacy. There is no reason to think the befuddled Obama administration is that diplomatically deft.</p> <p>But who is Pavel Felgenhauer? Regrettably, he is not a guy in furry slippers in someone’s basement spouting weird conspiracy theories. Instead, he is one of Russia’s top defense analysts with solid connections in that country’s military. He is a frequent critic of the Russian military and the Putin regime; it’s noteworthy that he published his analysis in <a href="http://nv.ua/" target="_blank"><em>Novoe Vremya</em></a> (New Times), a Ukrainian newsmagazine, not a Russian outlet, perhaps because this sort of truth-telling is unwelcome at home. His prognostications are often correct, for instance his prediction of the Russian invasion of Georgia in August 2008, which he called two months before it happened.</p> <p class="pullquote">That is NATO’s top concern right now: that after years of weakness and vacillation, the Obama administration may find itself backed into a corner by aggressive Russian action.</p> <p>Is Mr. Felgenhauer’s alarmism warranted? Many Western insiders think along similar lines. By letting Mr. Putin get away with whatever he likes in Syria, Mr. Obama has created a deeply dangerous situation in the region. By abandoning his infamous Syria “redline” in September 2013, the White House in effect outsourced American policy there to Mr. Putin, <a href="http://nationalinterest.org/commentary/americas-middle-east-policy-collapses-9073" target="_blank">as I warned you at the time</a>, and which the Obama administration, powerless to influence terrible events in Syria, is slowly realizing.</p> <p>“Are we heading for our ‘Sarajevo moment’?” a senior NATO official bluntly asked: “It’s clear that there has to be some actual ‘redline’ for Mr. Obama, something that the United States cannot tolerate Russia doing – but where is it? If I don’t know, I’m sure the Kremlin doesn’t either.”</p> <p>That is NATO’s top concern right now: that after years of weakness and vacillation, the Obama administration may find itself backed into a corner by aggressive Russian action. Particularly if coupled with intemperate Turkish reactions, that could create a nightmare of historic proportions around Aleppo. Although the White House has foresworn any military intervention in Syria’s fratricide, it’s worth noting that Mr. Obama led NATO to war in Libya exactly five years ago to prevent possible slaughter in Benghazi, <a href="http://nationalinterest.org/commentary/forever-bosnia-5095" target="_blank">a far smaller humanitarian threat</a> than the terrifying sword of Russian artillery and airpower that’s hanging over Aleppo right now.</p> <p>For their part, the Russians are upping the ante, with regime media <a href="https://www.rt.com/news/332109-russian-jets-isis-warlords/" target="_blank">publishing claims</a> by the Defense Ministry that air attacks on Aleppo yesterday that killed civilians, including the bombing of a hospital, were actually perpetrated by U.S. Air Force A-10s, a war crime that they say the Pentagon has tried to pin on Moscow. In fact, American intelligence knows this was the work of the Russian Air Force: “We have intercepts of the Russian pilots talking during the attack,” explained a Pentagon official, “as usual, the Russians are lying.” Yet this sort of dishonest Kremlin propaganda, what spies term disinformation, is exactly what the Obama administration has refused to counter, <a href="http://observer.com/2015/11/obama-fails-to-fight-putins-propaganda-machine/">as I’ve explained in this column</a>, in a futile effort to keep the Kremlin happy.</p> <p>Mr. Putin instead has taken his measure of Mr. Obama and has doubled down, saving his client regime in Syria. Russia has won in Syria and NATO and the West are stuck with that outcome, as are the unlucky residents of Aleppo. “I hope Obama doesn’t decide to get a backbone now,” suggested a retired American general who knows the Russians well, “since the Kremlin is in ‘drive’ in Syria and isn’t about to do ‘reverse’.”</p> <p>There seems to be little chance of this White House taking on the Russians in Syria. However, there are no guarantees that Ankara is equally inclined to let the Kremlin do whatever it wants on its southern border, and that is how NATO could get embroiled in World War III over the Levant. The president’s only public event Tuesday was a plea for Congress to approve extended benefits for the long-term unemployed, another reminder of the persistent economic troubles during Mr. Obama’s five years in office.</p> <p>“What I think the American people are really looking for in 2014 is just a little bit of stability,” Mr. Obama said.</p> <p>Although the president often rails against income inequality in America, his policies have had little impact overall on poverty. A record 47 million Americans receive food stamps, about 13 million more than when he took office.</p> <p>The poverty rate has stood at 15 percent for three consecutive years, the first time that has happened since the mid-1960s. The poverty rate in 1965 was 17.3 percent; it was 12.5 percent in 2007, before the Great Recession.<br /> About 50 million Americans live below the poverty line, which the federal government defined in 2012 as an annual income of $23,492 for a family of four.</p> <p>President Obama’s anti-poverty efforts “are basically to give more people more free stuff,” said <a href="http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/robert-rector/">Robert Rector</a>, a specialist on welfare and poverty at the conservative Heritage Foundation.</p> <p>“That’s exactly the opposite of what Johnson said,” <a href="http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/robert-rector/">Mr. Rector</a> said. “Johnson’s goal was to make people prosperous and self-sufficient.”</p> <p>The president’s advisers defend his policies by saying they rescued the nation from the deep recession in 2009, saved the auto industry and reduced the jobless rate to 7 percent from a high of 10 percent four years ago.</p> <p>Gene Sperling, the president’s top economic adviser, said Mr. Obama has pulled as many as 9 million people out of poverty with policies such as extending the earned income tax credit for parents with three or more children and reducing the “marriage penalty.”</p> <p>“There are things that this president has done that have made a big difference,” Mr. Sperling said Monday.</p> <p>The White House again is pushing for an increase in the federal minimum wage, this time advocating a Senate bill that would raise the hourly rate to $10.10 from its current $7.25. Mr. Sperling said that action would lift another 6.8 million workers out of poverty.</p> <p>“It would make them less dependent on government programs. It would not add to the deficit one penny, but it would reward work and reduce poverty,” he said.</p> <p>The president is expected to use his State of the Union address Jan. 20 to pressure Congress to raise the minimum wage. He made the same pitch a year ago.</p> <p>Democrats are advocating issues such as unemployment benefits and the minimum wage especially hard this year as the class-warfare rhetoric heats up to frame the congressional midterm elections. House Republican leaders oppose increasing the minimum wage and want unemployment benefits to be paid with savings elsewhere in the budget. Congressman Mike Rogers Introduces Bill to Get U.S. Out of UN

<p><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="262" src="http://www.thenewamerican.com/media/k2/items/cache/eb40e5dffe71e1e3683c937904ad1b21_XL.jpg" width="497" /></p> <p>Citing wasted tax dollars and attacks on the constitutionally guaranteed liberties of the American people, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.; shown) introduced a bill to restore U.S. sovereignty and withdraw from the United Nations. The effort to de-fund and exit the UN comes amid growing scrutiny of the global organization, often ridiculed as the “dictators club,” and <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/africa/item/20776-whistleblower-targeted-for-exposing-un-troops-raping-children">myriad mega-scandals swirling around it</a>. However, despite ever-growing support in Congress for restoring U.S. sovereignty by withdrawing from the UN over the years, the legislation still faces an uphill battle.</p> <p>In a <a href="http://mikerogers.house.gov/press-release/report-washington-restoring-and-protecting-american-sovereignty" target="_blank">statement</a> last week announcing the <a href="https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/114/hr1205/text" target="_blank">American Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2015 (H.R. 1205)</a>, Rep. Rogers noted that many of his constituents in East Alabama would likely agree with his position that U.S. government participation in the UN should end immediately. “The U.N. continues to prove it’s an inefficient bureaucracy and a complete waste of American tax dollars,” the congressman said, echoing widespread concerns about the international outfit expressed across America and worldwide.</p> <p>“Why should the American taxpayer bankroll an international organization that works against America’s interests around the world?” asked Rep. Rogers. “The time is now to restore and protect American sovereignty and get out of the United Nations.” He cited attacks on U.S. liberties as a key motivation for the legislation.</p> <p>Several other liberty-minded congressmen have also sponsored the legislation including constitutionalist Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Rep. John Duncan (R-Tenn.), Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.), and Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.). A previous bill to withdraw from the UN introduced in the last Congress by then-Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) garnered nine co-sponsors. With the <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/asia/item/21025-china-staking-claim-in-the-new-world-order">regime ruling Communist China increasingly taking a leading role at the UN</a>, among numerous other concerns, opposition to the global body is expected to continue growing.</p> <p>If approved, the legislation would repeal the UN Participation Act of 1945 and shutter the U.S. government’s mission to the outfit. It would also “terminate all membership by the United States in the United Nations, and in any organ, specialized agency, commission, or other formally affiliated body of the United Nations.” That specifically includes UNESCO, which President Ronald Reagan withdrew from, along with the World Health Organization, the UN Environment Program (UNEP), and more. It would end all U.S. involvement in all UN conventions and agreements, too.</p> <p>The proposed law, introduced in numerous legislative session of Congress in recent decades, would also end all funding to the UN and all of its agencies — with the estimated savings to taxpayers reaching into the billions per year, and potentially even more. The legislation also aims to end all U.S. military involvement in UN military “peacekeeping” schemes and ban U.S. troops from serving under UN command. Finally, the bill would seek to evict the UN and its <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/item/19338-un-security-council-adds-more-tyrants">dictator-infested headquarters</a> from U.S. soil. It would also ban any use of American government facilities by the global outfit, while stripping UN bureaucrats and dignitaries of diplomatic immunity.</p> <p>Rep. Rogers pointed to a wide range of reasons why the U.S. should dump the UN. “Although the United States makes up almost a quarter of the U.N.’s annual budget, the U.N. has attempted a number of actions that attack our rights as U.S. citizens,” he explained. “To name a few, these initiatives include actions like the Law of the Sea Treaty, which would subject our country to internationally-based environmental mandates, costing American businesses more money, or the U.N.’s work to re-establish an international regulation regime on global warming which would heavily target our fossil fuels.”</p> <p>Indeed, especially in recent years, the UN has become increasingly brazen in attacking the rights of Americans, and even the U.S. Constitution that enshrines those unalienable rights. From attacks on free speech and gun rights to assaults on America’s federalist system of government and states’ rights, the UN and its member regimes have become increasingly aggressive. Now, the UN is working on a series of major schemes that would undermine even the principles upon which the United States was founded, much of it <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/item/19851-united-nations-exploits-pseudo-human-rights-to-attack-u-s">under the guise of promoting pseudo-human rights</a> and <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/item/13126-the-united-nations-on-the-brink-of-becoming-a-world-government">pseudo-environmentalism</a>.</p> <p>Rep. Rogers took special aim at a <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/item/19486-merry-christmas-united-nations-declares-arms-trade-treaty-to-go-into-effect-dec-24">UN gun treaty that has become a lightning rod for bipartisan opposition across America</a>. “The U.N. has also offered a potential Arms Trade Treaty which would threaten our Second Amendment rights and impose regulations on our gun manufacturers, who are already facing regulations and pressure from the Obama Administration,” Rogers explained. That treaty, ATT for short, would purport to require gun registration and eventually strict controls, with the ultimate aim of disarming civilians.</p> <p>The UN’s perceived anti-Israel bias, which some critics have even dubbed systemic anti-Semitism, also attracted criticism from Rep. Rogers. “Lastly, the U.N. does not support Israel and voted to grant the Palestinian Authority ‘non-member state’ permanent observer status,” he argued. “Anyone who is not a friend to our ally Israel, is not a friend to the United States.” Even some globalist neo-con senators such as Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) have threatened the UN over its apparent hostility to Israel, and the outrage continues to grow.</p> <p>For the reasons cited above, “among others,” Rep. Rogers said, he introduced the American Sovereignty Restoration Act. By introducing the bill in this session, the congressman from Alabama continues the long and valiant effort by lawmakers to get the U.S. government out of the UN. Former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), a GOP presidential candidate last election and a hero of many liberty-minded and constitutionalist Americans, first introduced the bill in 1997, when it garnered 54 supporters. The next time it was voted on, support had drastically increased.</p> <p>While anti-UN sentiment is fierce and growing across much of America, in Alabama, where the legislation’s lead sponsor comes from, that animosity is especially pronounced. In 2012, for example, both houses of the state legislature voted unanimously <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/tech/environment/item/11592-alabama-adopts-first-official-state-ban-on-un-agenda-21">to ban the deeply controversial UN “sustainable development” program known as Agenda 21</a> in what was hailed as a major victory for property rights and sovereignty. Since then, <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/item/16467-un-demands-obama-nullify-stand-your-ground-laws">UN meddling in American affairs</a> has accelerated dramatically, sparking even more outrage about the global organization across Alabama and beyond.</p> <p>In the U.S. Senate, pro-sovereignty sentiment is also growing. Earlier this year, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a leading contender for the 2016 nomination, blasted the UN and <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/politics/item/19921-sen-rand-paul-would-be-happy-to-dissolve-the-un">suggested it should be dismantled</a>. “I dislike paying for something that two-bit Third World countries with no freedom attack us and complain about the United States,” explained the senator, who is also Ron Paul’s son. “There’s a lot of reasons why I don’t like the UN, and I think I’d be happy to dissolve it.”</p> <p>The American public generally shares those sentiments, with a 2014 Gallup poll showing that a staggering 57 percent of Americans believed the UN was doing a “bad job,” versus 37 percent who thought it was doing a “good job.” More than two thirds of Americans were upset with the UN, and independents were also overwhelmingly opposed. But even among Democrats, half thought the UN was doing a bad job. The Obama administration, meanwhile, apparently out of step with the American people, has <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/foreign-policy/item/17990-obama-budget-supersizes-u-s-funding-for-un-global-military">called for drastically expanding and empowering the UN</a> and its <a href="http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-news/africa/item/20776-whistleblower-targeted-for-exposing-un-troops-raping-children">scandal-plagued military forces</a>.</p> <p>The legislation to withdraw U.S. participation in the UN is currently sitting in the House Foreign Affairs Committee chaired by Rep. Edward “Ed” Royce (R-Calif.), who will play a key role in deciding whether it moves on to the full House for a vote by the American people’s elected representatives. Americans who support U.S. sovereignty and the U.S. Constitution should urge their representatives to take action.</p> <p>As efforts to fully restore U.S. sovereignty proceed, though, the Republican Congress should completely de-fund the UN in the meantime. FBI Arrests Every Corrupt Politician In Texas City

That’s because he was the only Crystal City council member who hadn’t been arrested, facing<span id="IL_AD8" class="IL_AD">felony charges</span>.</p> <p>Officials in the <span id="IL_AD12" class="IL_AD">Texas city</span> had all been arrested arrested the day before, under a federal indictment accusing them of taking tens of thousands of dollars in bribes for special favors.</p> <div> <p>The indictment netted the city’s mayor, mayor pro tempore, as well as a council member, and the city manager. Additionally, a former city council member was arrested, along with a businessman accused of bribing the officials, <span id="IL_AD11" class="IL_AD">Ngoc</span> Tri Nguyen.</p> <p>Another council member, Marco Rodriguez, was just arrested last month on charges of human smuggling.</p> <p>Crystal City has about 7,500 people, and it is located 130 miles southwest of San Antonio.</p> <p>Barajashas been on the council for nine months, according to local KSAT.</p> <p>“I knew some things were not being correctly taken care of,” he explained.</p> <div> <p>The indictment alleges that officials “used their official <span id="IL_AD1" class="IL_AD">positions</span> to enrich themselves by soliciting and <span id="IL_AD2" class="IL_AD">accepting payments</span> and other things of value” from Nguyen as well as other businessmen.</p> <p>These businessmen were award taxpayer-funded contracts in exchange for bribes, as well as extorting payments from contractors.</p> <p>Nguyen’s gaming business monopolized things, as politicians shut down would-be competitors.</p> <p>It also alleges that Lopez and the other officials extended city manager and <span id="IL_AD5" class="IL_AD">city attorney</span>William Jonas’s lucrative taxpayer-funded contract, in exchange for bribes.</p> <p>The San Antonio Express-News says that that Jonas, a “one-time Republican <span id="IL_AD10" class="IL_AD">lobbyist</span> down on his luck,” was paid nearly $180,000 a year. This was after being hired without ever having worked as a city attorney or even having applied for the job.</p> <p>Residents told local <span id="IL_AD9" class="IL_AD">KENS</span> that they had already tried recalling the city leaders. Jonas, however, used his power as city attorney to block all attempts.</p> <p>Crystal City is now $2 million in debt and facing bankruptcy, as a result of the bribes and secret deals.</p> <p>Richard <span id="IL_AD6" class="IL_AD">Durbin</span> Jr., the U.S. attorney for San Antonio, said in an interview with the<span id="IL_AD3" class="IL_AD">Associated Press</span> that he hoped this indictment will help restore some public confidence in the local government.</p> <p>“What we can do is that first step,” Durbin said. “In the end, it falls back on the citizens to make the next decision on who they put in those offices, because that’s how the system works.”</p> <p>Each official faces up to 10 years in <span id="IL_AD7" class="IL_AD">federal prison</span> as well as $250,000 in fines, if convicted. First, Fox News refused to donate money to veterans, though the network’s point about quid pro quo and ethics in general was in fact legitimate.</p> <p>Second, according to The Hill, a day earlier Fox News host Bill O’Reilly pretty much begged Trump to appear at the final debate. But when the network finally had the chance to get him in there, it refused, so instead of showing up at the debate, Trump hosted aveterans event to raise money for all the veterans in need.</p> <p>Fox News was right to stick to its guns, as money changing hands in any way to ensure the appearance of a candidate at any function is questionable, at best. <p><img alt="Turkey-621613" class="td-animation-stack-type0-1" height="291" src="http://i1.wp.com/usanewsflash.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Turkey-621613.jpg?resize=590%2C350" width="491" /></p> <p>A Russian Su-27 jet fighter came within 20 feet of a U.S. RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea on Monday in Moscow’s latest military provocation involving dangerous aerial encounters.</p> <p>“On Jan. 25 an RC-135 aircraft flying a routine route in international airspace over the Black Sea was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 in an unsafe and unprofessional manner,” Navy Capt. Daniel Hernandez, chief spokesman for the U.S. European Command, told the<em>Washington Free Beacon</em>. “We are looking into the issue.”</p> <p>Defense officials said the Su-27 flew alongside the RC-135, an electronic intelligence-gathering aircraft, and then performed what they said was an aggressive banking turn away from the intelligence jet.</p> <p>The thrust from the Su-27 “disturbed the controllability” of the RC-135, said one official familiar with details of the incident.</p> <p>A second official said the reconnaissance aircraft was flying 30 miles from the coast—well within international airspace and far away from any Russian territory—at the time of the encounter.</p> <p>The Pentagon announced <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_170235410"><span class="aQJ">Thursday</span></span> that it has concluded a flight safety memorandum with Russia after holding a video conference with Russian Defense Ministry officials.</p> <p>The areas of discussion included air safety over the skies in Syria as well as “the means to avoid accidents and unintended confrontation between coalition and Russian forces whenever the two sides operate in close proximity,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement.</p> <p>The statement made no mention of <span class="aBn" tabindex="0" data-term="goog_170235411"><span class="aQJ">Monday’s</span></span> dangerous aerial encounter.</p> <p>The Black Sea encounter was the latest in a series of aggressive Russian military activities aimed coercing or harassing U.S. military aircraft and ships in both Europe and Asia.</p> <p>The provocations are not limited to U.S. forces. On Tuesday, Japan’s Defense Ministry revealed that Japanese interceptor jets were scrambled to chase two Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers that approached the northern end of Japan and flew just outside that country’s airspace in maneuvers described by analysts as unusually close.</p> <p>Other incidents included a similar near-collision between a Russian fighter and RC-135, a militarized Boeing 707, over the Black Sea on May 30. Around the same time, a Russian Su-24 jet buzzed the destroyer USS Ross in the Black Sea near occupied Crimea.</p> <p>Earlier, on April 7, another Su-27 flew within 20 feet of an RC-135, this time over the Baltic Sea.</p> <p>The RC-135 intercept over the Black Sea took place around the same time as a Russian Su-24 jet interceptor buzzed the destroyer USS Ross in the Black Sea, near occupied Crimea.</p> <p>Navy footage showed the jet made several low-level passes over the Ross.</p> <p>In October, two Russian Tu-142 bombers made low passes near the aircraft carrier USS Reagan as it sailed in the Sea of Japan near the Korean peninsula.</p> <p>Navy F-18 jets were scrambled to intercept the bombers during that incident.</p> <p>And last July 4, two Tu-95 nuclear-capable bombers flew within 40 miles of the California coast and communicated a “happy birthday” message to intercepting U.S. pilots. That incident took place the same day President Obama held a telephone conference with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.</p> <p>Russian Tu-95 bombers also circumnavigated Guam in December, for the second time in two months. Guam is the U.S. military’s major hub and a key facility in the American military rebalance to Asia.</p> <p>“Much of what Russia is doing today is aimed at generating fear of Russian military power and the possibility of war,” said former Pentagon Russia expert Mark Schneider.</p> <p>“That is broadcast on a daily basis in the state media and through Russian military actions,” Schneider added. “Provocations involving aircraft are now common place. Russia also tends to be paranoid concerning foreign espionage and the protection of state secrets.”</p> <p>Adm. Cecil Haney, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command said Russian military activities, including aircraft flights, are an increasing concern as Moscow seeks to reemerge as a world power.</p> <p>Haney voiced concerns about Russian nuclear-capable bomber flights around the world, and large-scale ground forces nuclear exercises, along with vocal statements threatening the use of nuclear weapons.</p> <p>Russian military aircraft have been conducting flights in Europe without the use of air-traffic control tracking transponders, a practice Haney called “reckless.”</p> <p>Russia has stepped up aggressive military activities in response to NATO’s deployment of forces closer to Russian borders following Moscow’s military annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea and continuing covert military destabilization of eastern Ukraine.</p> <p>NATO has increased its force posture with additional military exercises, troop deployments and increased intelligence-gathering to support NATO allies that are threatened by Russian military revanchism.</p> <p>Russia announced a new military strategy in December that increases the country’s reliance on nuclear forces over conventional troops and weapons.</p> <p>Russia also is expected to announce a new military doctrine, a senior Russian commander announced on Tuesday.</p> <p>Maj. Gen. Sergey Chvarkov, deputy chief of the general staff academy said the United States is seeking to weaken Russia and is creating new national security threats to Moscow.</p> <p>“At the foundation of the negative development of the international situation lie the USA’s actions, which in striving for global hegemony intentionally forms global instability to weaken strategic opponents, primarily Russia, creating national security threats to our country,” Chvarkov said, according to the state-run RIA Novosti news agency.</p> <p>Western policies are fomenting global and internal conflicts that have produced the flood of refugees in Europe, Chvarkov said. Here’s What Oregon Ranchers Were Doing Immediately BEFORE They Were Shot

<p><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="338" src="http://a.abcnews.go.com/images/US/ap_ammon_bundy_01_jc_160104_4x3_992.jpg" width="450" /></p> <p>Just as many people had predicted and feared, the weeks-long armed standoff between protesters and federal authorities regarding the occupation of a wildlife refuge in rural Oregon descended into gunfire and violence on Tuesday.</p> <p>It has been widely reported that the leader of the armed protest, Ammon Bundy, was arrested along with seven others by the FBI following a purported traffic stop.</p> <p>Unfortunately, it has also been reported that shots were fired during the arrest, injuring at least one protester and killing another.<br /> According to Fox News, the man who was shot and killed was Robert “Lavoy” Finicum, a 55-year-old father of 11 who had acted as a spokesman for the group. Finicum had previously stated publicly that he would rather die than be taken into federal custody, and authorities are claiming that he refused to drop his weapon after being ordered to do so.</p> <p>But both the Bundy and Finicum families disputed those claims, alleging that Finicum was essentially executed while unarmed and in submission to authorities, according to a separate report by Fox News.</p> <p>Ammon Bundy reportedly passed along word to his family that Finicum was cooperating with the police before he was killed.</p> <p>“I want the world to know how my father was murdered today,” read a Facebook post reportedly written by Finicum’s daughter, Thara Tenney. “His hands were in the air and he was shot in the face by the American authorities. Ammon Bundy reported there are six witnesses to this evil.”</p> <p>The other man shot and injured by the police was believed to be Ammon Bundy’s older brother Ryan.</p> <p>All of the individuals arrested were being charged under a statute that makes it a federal felony to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties through the use of force, intimidation or threats.</p> <p>It remains to be seen if this incident will mark the end of the armed protest movement ostensibly on behalf of ranchers concerned over the federal control of land in the United States and its impact on their livelihoods.</p> <p>_{<i>-- Delivered by <a href="http://feed43.com/">Feed43</a> service</i>}</p>
