Dr. Anthony Fauci defended the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) tyrannical guidelines on summer camp, bewildering even lockdown cheerleader Savannah Guthrie.
In a “Today Show” interview Wednesday, host Guthrie asked why the CDC was calling for children at summer camp to wear masks “at all times” even while vaccinated and maintain strict social distancing measures, in contradiction of the evidence showing those measures aren’t necessary.
“The CDC guidelines right now for kids in summer camp say masks must be worn at all times, even outdoors, by everyone including vaccinated adults and children as young as 2 years old, and campers should stay three feet apart outdoors,” Guthrie began.
“My question to you is: given what recent research shows about transmission outside, about the low risk of serious illness in children, are these CDC guidelines excessive?”
“I wouldn’t call them excessive, but they certainly are conservative,” Fauci said with a laugh, adding that the CDC is “continually reevaluating that for its practicality.”
But Guthrie wasn’t having Fauci’s non-answer this time, reminding Fauci that he’s been preaching to “follow the science” for over a year, which she says the CDC isn’t following.
“The science doesn’t suggest those CDC guidelines are too sensible for little kids outside in 90-degree heat running around with masks,” Guthrie argued.
Fauci just laughed, admitting that Guthrie had asked him this question before.
“I’m asking for two kids named Vale and Charley, age six and four,” she shot back, referring to her own children.
Fauci insisted that the CDC “makes decisions based on science,” but then admitted that its guidelines were “a bit stringent.”
“But that’s the reasoning they keep looking at that and trying to reevaluate on – literally in real time – whether or not that’s the practical way to go,” he added.
A respiratory expert who works at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the agency Fauci heads, recently called the CDC’s summer camp guidance “cruel” and “irrational.”
Charitably,” he told New York Magazine, “masking kids at camp outdoors is simply virtue signaling. Requiring kids to continuously wear masks at camps, even while outside playing in the heat, when it provides little additional protection is unfair and cruel to our children. Considering that children are at incredibly low risk for developing severe illness, the minimal benefits of mask wearing do not outweigh the substantial costs of discouraging children to be active and their overall health.”
