Several hundred anti-fascist gathered yesterday in central Zagreb, Croatia, under the banner “United against fascism” in protests of the announced lineup of “army of the party” of extreme right Ustasha “Autochthonous Croatian Party of Rights” (A-HSP). Antifascist gathering was organized by Occupy Croatia movement.
Earlier, A-HSP planned to hold a gathering on the same spot, but police haven’t issued a permission for it, explaining that such a gathering might disturb citizens.
However, around 20 supporters of A-HSP came to the gathering but were vastly outnumbered by several hundred Antifa.
While police presence prevented conflict, one member of A-HSP insulted Antifa saying that they are ”communists who should be sent to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen to be burned”. At the same time, Antifa chanted “long live anti-fascism” and sang Bandera Rossa, a song that is considered a type of anthem for the socialists and workers movement.
Two Antifa and at least five A-HSP supporters were arrested on today’s protests, among them one of the party leaders Dražen Keleminec, index.hr reported.
One of the anti-fascist protester said that its important to raise voice against every kind of fascism and Nazism.
“I am not a communist or a Yugoslav, but I am against every kind of hate and hate speech”.
While A-HSP sometimes points out that they are not Ustasha, they openly admire Independent State of Croatia (NDH), a puppet state of Nazi Germany, and World War II war criminal Ante Pavelić. Namely, while recently announcing lineup of “army of the party” Keleminec and his associates sang one Ustasha song “Here comes the dawn, here comes the day.
Occupy Croatia has announced that in two weeks, on 14th of March, they will hold another anti-fascist gathering.
