Kabul [Afghanistan]:
The Taliban aim to unveil a new governing framework for Afghanistan in the next few weeks, a spokesman for the Islamist movement said on Saturday, after the insurgents' swift takeover of the South Asian nation.
"Legal, religious and foreign policy experts in the Taliban aim to present the new governing framework in the next few weeks," the official told Reuters.
The Taliban have sought to present a more moderate face since last week's lightning takeover, but ruled with an iron fist from 1996 to 2001 before being toppled by U.S.-led forces for sheltering al Qaeda militants behind the Sept. 11 attacks.

Veracruz, Mexico:
Grace rapidly intensified into a "major" Category Three hurricane on Friday as it barreled towards Mexico for a second time, US forecasters said.
The storm clocked maximum sustained winds of 120 miles (195 kilometers) per hour while approaching the coast of the eastern state of Veracruz, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Melbourne:
Australian police patrolled the streets and blocked transport into the centre of Sydney on Saturday to prevent a planned anti-lockdown protest as the country reported a record high daily number of new COVID-19 infections.
Officials reported a total of 886 cases in New South Wales and Victoria states, with the vast bulk in Sydney, which is the epicentre of the Delta variant-fuelled outbreak.
With other states and territories still to report daily numbers, new infections have already exceeded the previous single-day high for the pandemic of 754 cases on Thursday.
"We are in a very serious situation here in New South Wales," state Health Minister Brad Hazzard said. "There is no time now to be selfish, it's time to think of the broader community and your families."
Sydney, a city of more than 5 million people, has been in a strict lockdown for weeks now, failing so far to contain an outbreak that has spread across internal borders and as far as neighbouring New Zealand.
New South Wales officials reported three deaths and 516 people in hospital on Saturday. Of the 85 people in intensive care, 76 were unvaccinated, officials said.
At least 96 people were active in community during their infectious period, and there were a number of breaches of public health orders, all slowing the efforts to curtail the outbreak.
More than 1,500 police officers were deployed on Sydney's streets on Saturday, trains were ordered to bypass major city stations and rideshares were banned to the city centre as police tried to prevent an unauthorised anti-lockdown protest.
Australian media reported that a similar protest was planned in Melbourne, with Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews on Saturday expanding a lockdown in that city to entire state as he reported 61 new locally acquired cases.
At least 39 of the new Victoria cases were active in community while infectious, raising concerns over officials' ability to gain control over the outbreak. Eighteen people were in hospital, eight in intensive care and six on ventilators.
Australia's COVID-19 numbers are still relatively low compared to other developed countries, with just over 43,000 cases and 978 deaths, but the latest outbreak has seen a significant resurgence in cases.

Kabul [Afghanistan]:
Chaos around the Kabul airport was so bad this week that the U.S. military was forced to use three helicopters to transport 169 Americans into the complex from a building just 200 meters (656 feet) away, the Pentagon said on Friday.
As Western nations struggled to ramp up the pace of evacuations from Afghanistan amid the chaos and reports of Taliban violence, U.S. President Joe Biden confronted criticism about his administration's planning for the withdrawal of U.S. troops and the Islamic militants' swift takeover of the country.
"I have seen no question of our credibility from our allies," Biden told reporters after making a speech from the White House. "... As a matter of fact, the exact opposite I've got ... we're acting with dispatch, we're acting, committing to what we said we would do."
Thousands of desperate Afghans clutching papers, children and some belongings thronged Kabul airport where gun-toting Taliban members urged those without travel documents to go home. In and around the airport at least 12 people have been killed since Sunday, NATO and Taliban officials said.
U.S. evacuation flights from Kabul's airport stopped for more than six hours on Friday while U.S. authorities looked for countries willing to accept people fleeing Afghanistan. They did resume later in the day.
In his remarks, Biden referred to the 169 Americans transported by the military. Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby later said the decision was made to use the helicopters on Thursday because the group was unable to get to the gate from a nearby hotel to the airport.
"The plan was simply (for them) to walk through the gate, but there was a large crowd established outside the Abbey gate, a crowd that not everybody had confidence in, in terms of their ability to walk through and so local commanders on the scene took the initiative and flew these helicopters out there to pick them up," Kirby said.
Biden insisted every American who wanted to would be evacuated, and that about 18,000 people had been airlifted out since July.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg described the situation outside Kabul airport as "very dire and difficult," as several member countries pressed for evacuations to continue beyond an Aug. 31 U.S. deadline.
Biden has not backed off that deadline, despite calls - internationally and at home from his fellow Democrats as well as opposition Republicans - to keep troops in Afghanistan as long as necessary to bring home every American.
Biden said he could not predict what the final outcome would be in Afghanistan, where the United States and allies have waged a 20-year war. But he promised to work with other countries to set "harsh conditions" for any cooperation or recognition of the Taliban, based on their human rights record.
PROTESTS, AND VIOLENCE
"They're looking to gain some legitimacy, they're going to have to figure out how they're going to retain that country," he said. "And there's going to be some harsh conditions, strong conditions we're going to apply that will depend on ... how well they treat women and girls, how they treat their citizens."
Although the Taliban has sought to present a more moderate face since its lightning takeover of the country last week, the group ruled with an iron fist from 1996-2001 before being toppled by U.S.-led forces for sheltering al Qaeda militants behind the Sept. 11 attacks.
Individual Afghans and international aid and advocacy groups have reported harsh retaliation against protests, and roundups of those who formerly held government positions, criticized the Taliban or worked with Americans.
Former officials told harrowing tales of hiding from the Taliban as armed gunmen went from door to door. One family of 16 described running to the bathroom, lights off and children's mouths covered, in fear for their lives.
"Those who may be in danger have no clear way out," U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees spokesperson Shabia Mantoo said, urging neighboring countries to keep borders open.
Biden again insisted that the U.S.-funded and -armed Afghan military had been expected to put up more of a fight.
"The overwhelming consensus was that ... the Afghan forces, they were not going to leave. They were not going to just abandon and they would put down their arms and take off," Biden said, arguing that the United States has no more interest in the country with al Qaeda defeated.
The Taliban called for unity, asking imams at Friday prayers to persuade people not to leave.
A witness said several people were killed in the eastern city of Asadabad on Thursday when the Taliban fired on a protest. There were similar shows of defiance in two other eastern cities - Jalalabad and Khost - coinciding with celebrations of Afghanistan's 1919 independence from British control.
"The Taliban are facing the new reality of Afghanistan that Afghans are not the same Afghans of 20 years ago," Barakat Rahmati, Afghanistan's deputy ambassador to Qatar, told Reuters.
"Afghans, inclusive of men and women, held protests in Kabul despite a Taliban gun being pointed to them. They are holding protests against injustice. They are defending their identity and their flag."
The U.S. State Department announced that nearly a dozen countries, from Europe to the Middle East, would allow flights with people evacuated from Kabul to land. Canada also said it would consider taking in additional refugees on behalf of the United States or other allies.

The US government is raising with Taliban officials whom it engages "at all levels" the growing number of reports that the terrorists are harassing the press following its occupation of the Afghan capital Kabul, State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters.
"We're raising them on all levels with our interlocutors," Price said at the daily State Department press briefing on Friday when asked about reports of Taliban harassing media.
Earlier in the day, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin told US Representatives that Americans had had run-ins with the Taliban in Kabul, contradicting President Joe Biden''s claims that nationals were making their way to the airport unimpeded.
Defense Department spokesperson John Kirby later acknowledged that the US military was aware of reports of Americans being harassed and sometimes beaten by Taliban forces, calling the reports deeply troubling.

Introducing Cruz, Fox News host Sean Hannity noted “There [is a] high rate of COVID positivity at that border. Any American that is infected because Joe is not enforcing the laws of this country can blame Joe Biden for COVID. And if you die, I would blame Joe Biden too.”
“People across the state of Texas and the country are pissed and should be pissed. People are dying, and Joe Biden doesn’t care,” Cruz chimed in.

And as Cruz pointed out, this isn’t the only problem, because at the holding facilities “Kids are getting sexually assaulted and raped, and Joe Biden and Kamala Harris don’t care.”
“We’ve had over a million illegal immigrants in the past six months, and they don’t care,” Cruz further proclaimed.
Hannity added that “For Americans, its vaccine and mask mandates, vaccine passports, but for Joe’s illegal immigrant population there’s no testing, high positivity rates, and you get to spreading it all around the country.”
Cruz urged that the left do not “give a flip about science… because it’s all about power and control,” adding “The left doesn’t believe in your privacy. It doesn’t believe in your freedom.” 
“They tried to portray it as an extreme choice,” said Cruz of COVID vaccines, adding “They say if you think people [should have] individual choice, then you don’t believe in science and want everyone to die.”
“They don’t care if you’ve had COVID and have natural immunity,” said Cruz, adding, “It’s not about the science. It’s about controlling your lives.”
