Russia has told a BBC journalist working in Moscow to leave the country by the end of this month in retaliation for what it called London's discrimination against Russian journalists working in Britain, state TV reported late on Thursday.
In an unusual move that signals a further deterioration in already poor ties between London and Moscow, the Rossiya-24 TV channel said that Sarah Rainsford, one of the British broadcaster's two English-language Moscow correspondents, would be going home in what it called "a symbolic deportation."
The step, which amounts to a de facto expulsion, follows a crackdown before parliamentary elections in September on Russian-language media at home whom the authorities judge to be backed by malign foreign interests intent on stoking unrest.
Rossiya-24 said Russian authorities had decided against renewing Rainsford's accreditation to work as a foreign journalist in Moscow beyond the end of this month when her existing visa expires.
The move was in retaliation for London not renewing or issuing visas to Russian journalists working in Britain, it said.
The channel cited Britain's treatment of state-backed Russian broadcaster RT and of online state news outlet Sputnik, saying neither could get accredited in Britain to cover international events.
"Sarah Rainsford is going home. According to our experts, this correspondent of the Moscow's BBC bureau will not have her visa extended because Britain, in the media sphere, has crossed all our red lines," Rossiya-24 said.
"The expulsion of Sarah Rainsford is our symmetrical response," it said.
The BBC said it was not commenting on the story. Rainsford did not reply to a request for comment. A spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry said she would comment on the matter once Rainsford had done so.
The British embassy in Moscow declined immediate comment.
Rainsford, a Russian-speaker, is an experienced BBC foreign correspondent who has also done stints in Havana, Istanbul and Madrid.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will head to Moscow next Friday before visiting Ukraine two days later, her spokesman said, without giving further details on the trips.
Spokesman Steffen Seibert said details on her programme and reasons for the visits will be provided next week.
Merkel's August 20 visit to Moscow would take place just weeks before she is due to leave office following September 26 elections in Germany.
It would also be her first to the Russian capital since January 2020.
Since then relations between Germany and Russia have been highly strained by a multitude of issues, including Moscow's troop build-up on Ukraine's borders, a series of espionage scandals and the poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
Nevertheless, Merkel had said in June that the EU should seek direct talks with President Vladimir Putin even as the bloc stands together against "provocations" from Russia.
But the call was opposed by several EU member states -- especially in eastern Europe -- who remain deeply wary of rewarding the Kremlin with talks before it changes course.
The last summit between EU chiefs and Putin took place in early 2014 -- before Moscow annexed Crimea and pro-Russia separatists broke away from Ukraine, sparking a rumbling conflict that has so far claimed more than 13,000 lives.
Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia together comprise the so-called Normandy format, a grouping that tries to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
Berlin has been a key ally for Kiev but it has also come under fire over its support for the 10-billion-euro ($12-billion) Nord Stream 2 pipeline that is set to double Russian gas supplies to Germany, Europe's largest economy.
Berlin argues that it needs additional gas deliveries as it phases out coal and nuclear energy.
But the project has been fiercely opposed by the United States and several European countries, which argue that it will increase energy dependence on Russia and Moscow's geopolitical clout.
The pipeline bypasses Ukraine's gas infrastructure, depriving the nation of badly needed transit fees and, Kiev fears, removing a key check on potential Russian aggression in the region.
Merkel, who is set to leave office later this year after 16 years in charge, has sought to emphasise to her allies that Ukraine will remain a transit route for natural gas.

Copenhagen:
Masks will no longer be required on Danish public transport, the government said on Friday, as the Nordic country lifted the last of its compulsory face-covering regulations.
"We are now in a situation... where a large part of the population has been vaccinated and we are returning to a more normal everyday life," transport minister Benny Engelbrecht said in a statement.
From Saturday, "We can say goodbye to masks on buses, trains and the metro," he added.
The change was originally scheduled for September 1.
On Wednesday, health authorities loosened social-distancing regulations in the Scandinavian kingdom of 5.8 million people, which has seen about 1,000 new infections a day.
Over 60 percent of the population has received a full course of the vaccine.
"We now have good control of the infection across society," Helene Bilsted Probst, deputy director of the national health agency said in a statement.
"Therefore, we can adapt the prevention recommendations in such a way that people can maintain a normal daily life while respecting the principle of prevention."
Masks will remain obligatory on planes and in the country's airports, where international air-transport rules apply.

Tokyo:
Japan will grant asylum to a footballer from Myanmar's national team who raised an anti-coup salute during a match outside Tokyo and refused to fly home, reports said Friday.
Substitute goalkeeper Pyae Lyan Aung raised the three-finger salute as the national anthem played before a World Cup qualifier against Japan in May.
He then said he had decided to seek asylum in Japan because his life would be "in danger" if he returned to Myanmar.
The Southeast Asian country has been in turmoil since the military's February coup, with over 900 killed and more than 7,000 arrested in a bloody crackdown, according to a local monitoring group.
The three-finger salute has frequently been used as a show of resistance by protesters during demonstrations.
Multiple major Japanese media outlets, citing anonymous sources, said the government had decided to grant the player refugee status.
The footballer's lawyer told AFP he was not aware of the outcome of the asylum claim, adding that his client was due to report to Osaka immigration office on August 20.
Public broadcaster NHK said Japan's immigration agency planned to certify the player's refugee status next week. The agency was not immediately reachable for comment.
Japan accepts just dozens of asylum applications each year.
But in May, the justice ministry said Myanmar residents already in the country would be able to extend their stays as an emergency measure.
Also in May, two officials at Myanmar's embassy in Tokyo were dismissed as the junta sacked diplomatic staff around the world who had opposed the coup.
The embassy told Japan's foreign ministry that diplomatic visas for the pair would no longer be valid -- but no action has been taken to revoke their visas, a ministry official told AFP on Friday.

San Francisco Mandates Vaccines To Engage In Social Life

One of the World Health Organization’s leading infectious diseases experts says that the first COVID ‘patient zero’ was “likely” a lab worker at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Peter Embarek, who spearheaded a WHO team sent to investigate the lab earlier this year, told Danish television that the likely source of the pandemic was someone infected by a bat during fieldwork or at one of the laboratories in Wuhan.
“This is where the virus jumps directly from a bat to a human,” reports Denmark’s <a href="https://nyheder.tv2.dk/udland/2021-08-12-ansat-paa-laboratorie-i-wuhan-kan-vaere-smittet-af-flagermus-som-den-foerste-siger">TV 2 News</a>. “In that case, it would then be a laboratory worker instead of a random villager or other person who has regular contact with bats. So it is actually in the probable category.”
The report notes that the type of bat involved in passing on the infection, the horse shoe bat, was only present inside the Wuhan lab and does not live naturally in the general Wuhan area.
“An employee who was infected in the field by taking samples falls under one of the probable hypotheses,” said Embarek.
Embarek’s new assessment contradicts the results of the WHO investigation, which originally asserted that the lab leak origin was “extremely unlikely.”

Daszak was also tasked by Facebook with ‘fact-checking’ (censoring) information related to the hypothesis, while Google, which via YouTube also censored information about the theory, also <a href="https://summit.news/2021/06/22/google-funded-virus-research-by-wuhan-lab-linked-scientist/">funded</a> Daszak’s virus research.
For the best part of a year after the outbreak, the scientific establishment and the mainstream media asserted that claims COVID originated from the Wuhan lab were a “dangerous fringe conspiracy theory.”
People who made such claims on social media sites were silenced and banned by Silicon Valley giants.
So-called ‘fact-checkers’ and censors who worked to cover-up such information may turn out to have helped facilitate one of the biggest cover-ups in modern history.
Will any of them apologize or change their policies?

Videos from the scene of the attack showed members of the public confronting the 24-year-old killer, who was later found to have radical Islamist propaganda on the premises of his home.
The suspect, who arrived in Germany in 2015 as a refugee, also reportedly told staff at a local hospital that his attack had been a ‘contribution to jihad’.
On Monday, Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria’s Interior Minister, said the incident had all the hallmarks of an Islamist terror attack.

While Mayor Christian Schuchardt expressed grief over the deaths of the victims, the main focus of his open letter was to complain that the attack could be used to stereotype other migrants and refugees.
“But I also cried for our city last night. Because of this short circuit, this equating is so obvious. Refugees, immigrants, violent criminals, religious warriors and terrorists – massacres,” he said in his letter.
“However, the crimes of individuals can never be traced back to population groups, religions or nationalities. We Germans were not condemned in general after the Second World War either. Nor does this now apply to Somalis or refugees in general. This pigeonholing must come to an end,” Schuchardt added.
“And at the same time, there will be no end to it. This is my moral demand, my wish for the society that I know cannot be fulfilled. Because how would you feel as a foreigner in our city today?” the letter asked.
In reality, refugees have been responsible for numerous terror attacks throughout Europe over the past six years since Angela Merkel’s disastrous decision to open the borders to them.
The terrorist who beheaded a woman and killed two others near a church in Nice, France last October was <a href="https://summit.news/2020/10/29/france-beheading-terrorist-revealed-to-be-boat-migrant-who-arrived-via-italy/">revealed</a> to be a Tunisian boat migrant.
The Chechen teen who beheaded school teacher Samuel Paty in the same month had been granted a 10-year residency in France as a refugee the previous March.
The <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/10/02/majority-of-paris-attackers-used-migration-routes-to-enter-europ/">majority</a> of the Paris massacre terrorists also exploited the refugee wave to enter Europe.
The three terrorists who went on a knife rampage in Lyon back in April last year were also Sudanese refugees.
The Manchester Arena suicide bomber Salmen Abedi was also <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/07/31/navy-rescued-manchester-bomber-salman-abedi-war-torn-libya-three/">rescued</a> from Libya as a refugee by the British Royal Navy after the fall of Colonel Gadaffi.
These are just a few of the many examples.
