<p>Muslims in Syria — all members of ISIS — captured a major archeologist named Khaled Asaad, tortured him, cut his head off and placed his body on display. They tortured him in order to coerce him to reveal where hidden artifacts lied. Asaad, a true advocate for archeology, refused to give the information to them. They beheaded him and put his body up on display. According to one report:</p>

<p>Islamic State militants beheaded a renowned antiquities scholar in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra and hung his mutilated body on a column in a main square of the historic site because he apparently refused to reveal where valuable artefacts had been moved for safekeeping.</p>
<p>The brutal murder of Khaled al-Asaad, 82, is the latest atrocity perpetrated by the jihadi group, which has captured a third of Syria and neighbouring Iraq and declared a “caliphate” on the territory it controls. It has also highlighted Isis’s habit of looting and selling antiquities to fund its activities – as well as destroying them.</p>
<p>Syrian state antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim said Asaad’s family had informed him that the scholar, who worked for more than 50 years as head of antiquities in Palmyra, was killed by Isis on Tuesday.</p>
<p>Asaad had been held for more than a month before being murdered. Chris Doyle, director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding, said he had learned from a Syrian source that the archaeologist had been interrogated by Isis about the location of treasures from Palmyra and had been executed when he refused to cooperate.</p>

<p>Why are the Muslims so fixated on destroying archeology? Because they want erase the history of the nation and reconstruct it to appear to posterity that it has always been Islamic. When archeologist dig up artifacts of antiquity, what they find is pagan and Christian relics, and all they show is that paganism once ruled, and Christianity destroyed it. So shall it be with this new wave of Islamic paganism, Christianity will destroy it.</p>

<p>A recently leaked video from Bangladesh shows Muslims beating and torturing a Christian child, eventually killing him. Although the death is not seen in the video, the torturing that leads to the death is. As can be seen in the video, the Muslim antichrists tied the boy up to keep him from escaping, and as they sadistically beat him, you can hear them laughing. Here is the very heart wrenching video:</p>

<p><a href="http://www.ucanews.com/news/bangladeshi-christians-demand-justice-for-child-killings/74117" target="_blank">According to a recent report</a>, the murder of children — including Christian children — are intensely increasing:</p>

<p>On July 8, Samiul Alam, 13, a vegetable seller in northeastern Sylhet city, was beaten to death for allegedly stealing a van. His killing was recorded on a cellphone and shared online. On Aug. 4, Muhammad Rakib, 12, was allegedly tortured and killed by his employer in the southern city of Khulna for joining a competing company. And Rabiul, a 10-year-old who used a single name, was bludgeoned to death, allegedly by a neighbor in southern Barguna district, after the child was accused of stealing fish.</p>
<p>Father Rozario said existing laws provide for a minimum of 10 years in prison for physical violence against children, and the death penalty for murder. But these laws, he said, have never been strictly followed.</p>
<p>“So the government’s negligence is one of the major causes behind ongoing abuses and killings of children,” he said.</p>
<p>The children’s murders show an alarming level of lawlessness and intolerance in Bangladesh, says Marist missionary Brother Cesar Henriquez Leiva, a child rights activist.</p>
<p>“All of us must be deeply saddened and ashamed that those children had to face barbaric killings,” he said.</p>
<p>Samrat Charles Gomes, 13, attended the Aug. 20 demonstration. For him, the country has become an unsafe place for children.</p>
<p>“Every time I think about those killings, I become frightened,” he said. “If there is no justice, this might happen to anyone, even to me.”</p>
<p>Amid national and international outcry, local police have arrested suspects in each of the four cases.</p>
<p>On Aug. 16, police filed murder charges against 13 men allegedly involved in Samiul Alam’s killing.</p>
<p>On Aug. 17, police in Dhaka arrested three men for Muhammad Raja’s beating death.</p>
<p>Bijoy Basak, police superintendent in Barguna district, told ucanews.com that one person has been arrested in connection with Rabiul’s murder.</p>
<p>Sukumar Biswas, officer in-charge at Khulna police station said three people have been arrested for the killing of Muhammad Rakib. Charges are pending, he said.</p>
<p>Bangladesh has seen an alarming rise on child abuses and killings recently. At least 191 children have been killed and 180 raped in the country this year alone, according to Dhaka-based Bangladesh Child Rights Forum, a national network of child rights organizations.</p>

<p>The sad truth about Shirin Barghi's <a href="http://www.shirinbarghi.com/#/lastwordsproject/" rel="nofollow">#LastWords</a> series is that it may never run out of material.</p>
<p>It started with Eric Garner. When the 43-year-old father of six was choked to death by former NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in July 2014, his final words, <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/staten-island-da-man-death-nypd-chokehold-article-1.1871946" rel="nofollow">recorded on video</a> and viewed thousands of times by people across the United States, were, "I can't breathe."</p>
<p>The phrase turned into a national rallying cry. "I can't breathe" was <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/04/justice/new-york-grand-jury-chokehold/" rel="nofollow">chanted by demonstrators</a> in New York and other cities across the country for months afterward, becoming a statement of solidarity with the victim and his family as well as a symbolic articulation against a multi-generational police assault on all black Americans.</p>
<p>Barghi, an Iranian-born, New York-based artist, says she first encountered the Garner video in an article about another victim of police violence: Michael Brown, who was shot dead by former Ferguson, Missouri, police officer Darren Wilson nearly a month after Garner's death.</p>
<p>"It drew a connection for me," Barghi told Mic. "I didn't expect this project to continue, or take off the way it did. Seeing these two incidents side-by-side helped me realized this was an ongoing phenomenon in America."</p>
<p>The project didn't end there. In the year that has passed <a href="http://mic.com/articles/96256/we-now-know-which-police-officer-killed-michael-brown" rel="nofollow">since Brown's death</a>, Barghi has been illustrating and tweeting her own creative depictions of the last words spoken by slain black male victims of state violence in the U.S. The result is a haunting tribute to the dead and a heartbreaking reminder of the toll American racism takes daily on black families and communities.</p>
<p>In many ways, #LastWords has assumed a life of its own, she says. Artists and musicians have reached out to her about creating similar series' focused on other topics, like the war in Yemen. Activists in Ferguson have also spoken to her about amplifying the last words spoken by black women who have died at the hands of American police.</p>
<p>"I really want other people to continue this work," Barghi says. "First, I'm not black, which I realize influences my perspective. Black pain [in the U.S.] is very real. So the first thing I try to do is educate myself, build an awareness."</p>
<p>Barghi moved to the United States from Iran in 2011. Two years earlier, in 2009, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/14/world/middleeast/14iran.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0" rel="nofollow">an allegedly fraudulent election</a> had sparked nationwide protest, resulting in countless opportunities to witness state violence and police abuse in Iran firsthand.</p>
<p>"I remember the video of Neda Agha-Soltan being shot by the police," Barghi said. Agha-Soltan's death, which was captured on video in June 2009, became a symbolic rallying point for the protests. "Her last words were something like, 'I'm burning! I'm burning!' which to me spoke so much to that generation of Iranians."</p>
<p>In August 2014, Barghi began creating and tweeting her work on police violence in the U.S., based on the idea that seeing the last words spoken by these individuals would further humanize them, forcing viewers to consider their own potential words under similar circumstances.</p>
<p>The series was celebrated at the time by a variety of advocates and outlets for its topicality and starkly impactful rendering. None of this has changed in the year since, but the list of names has grown steadily longer, from a handful of then-notorious cases — including Garner, Sean Bell and Amadou Diallo — to a seemingly endless flood of new victims, which now includes Samuel Dubose, who was killed by a campus police officer in Cincinnati during a traffic stop last month, and Christian Taylor, who was shot dead by police at a car dealership in Arlington, Texas, on August 7. In this case, Barghi captured a tweet days before Taylor's life was cut short.</p>
<p>When asked what she hopes people will take away from the #LastWords series, Barghi is pensive. "I guess I would like people to educate themselves and really look into these people's stories," she says. "Because it did make me do that. And I hope people use this to learn what police violence in the U.S. really looks like."</p>
<p>"But really, there's nothing inspirational here."</p>
<p>In the meantime, her work of documenting the last words spoken by black people killed by police continues unabated — and doesn't look like it'll be ending anytime soon.</p>

<p>I personally think the time has come to set wheels in motion to organize a state-owned bank here in California. North Dakota has operated its own bank since the early 1900s and it has made money for taxpayers while strengthening the state's own regional banks. The net effect has been to keep bank profits in North Dakota. The only losers have been the "too-big-to-fail" banks that would otherwise have enjoyed making the spread on money borrowed by, and throughout, the state.</p>
<p>Of course, there is little political will to organize anything this effective in California because the banking lobby deploys too much money throughout the political process. However, our state's initiative process offers voters an option to do an end-run around elected officials. We could take a major step in offering an alternative to the predations of Wall Street's major banking institutions while generating a predictable source of revenue for the state.</p>
<p>I floated the idea of a public bank in an earlier column, but what set me off this time was an email I received from a reader, age 73, who was faced with eviction after doing battle for six years with one of the major financial institutions -- the latter of which is only still in business today because of a taxpayers' bailout back in 2008. All these banks have lost sight of the fact that we have every right to treat them as a public utility.</p>
<p>But back to our embattled reader: After having added to the principal at a rate of $1,000 per month, which was illegal at the time, the bank has now renegotiated with loan payments of $2,000 per month that rise by $200 per month in 2016, $400 per month in 2017 and $500 per month in 2018. The lawyer working with this couple has described their predicament as "the worst predatory loan he has ever seen."</p>
<p>I had thought that situations like this were behind us until earlier this month when the New York Times ran two articles on the extent to which banks were still beating up on their borrowers. One bank was found to have rejected 87 percent of requests for loan modifications while, at the same time, denials were highly profitable thanks to the continuation of loan servicing fees.</p>
<p>Thanks to organizations like the Public Banking Institute, there is a growing national movement to consider the adoption of public banks. It is prompted, in part, by the inability of elected officials to make much headway against the forces of lobbyists in Washington or at state levels. How else can you explain the fact that one major bank today is back to having over $35 trillion in derivatives? That means that we're all back to ensuring that institutions backing those bets are all good for the money. It's like "Oofty Goofty" always bouncing back up.</p>
<p>The only antidote is to establish a parallel banking system owned by citizens much like the Resolution Trust Corporation that the federal government operated during the Depression and World War II. When it finally closed its doors, under pressure from the banking industry, it had made over $600 million in profit for the United States -- and that was back when $600 million was a lot of money.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, with North Dakota as an example, the most progress could probably be accomplished here in California where we have the advantage of the initiative process. If nothing else, it would be illustrative and entertaining to see who, exactly, would be falling all over themselves to fight the initiative -- and to see how much money they would spend in an attempt to quash a standard of comparison.</p>

<p>Muslim scholars from 20 countries issued an “Islamic Declaration on Climate Change” on Tuesday, calling on the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims to do their part to eliminate dangerous greenhouse gas emissions and commit to renewable energy sources.</p>
<p>The declaration, which draws on Islamic teachings, was drafted by academics and finalized at the International Islamic Climate Change Symposium held in Istanbul Aug. 17-18. The symposium’s goal was to reach “broad unity and ownership from the Islamic community around the Declaration,” according to the event’s website.</p>
<p>“Faith communities increasingly recognize that the climate crisis is also a moral crisis,” a statement on the website said. “The adverse impacts of climate change that we have witnessed so far, present a clear case for people of faith to examine the underlying moral causes of this phenomenon. It prompts faith communities to take action to halt the desecration of nature that leads to destruction of creation, human and otherwise.”</p>
<p>The declaration calls on Muslim countries — especially those that are “well-off” and “oil-producing” — to lead the charge in phasing out greenhouse gas emissions “no later than the middle of the century.” Many researchers say these gasses can trap the sun’s rays and raise global temperatures. This has been widely blamed for dangerous shifts in climate and weather patterns, including intense storms, droughts and heat waves.</p>
<p>The declaration also calls on wealthy Muslim countries to provide financial and technical support to less-affluent states so they too can work to eliminate pollution, reduce consumption of finite resources, work to stabilize the Earth’s temperature, abandon “unethical profit from the environment” and help create a global green economy.</p>
<p>The declaration, which invites “people of all nations and their leaders” to join forces to fight climate change, has already garnered support from the grand muftis — interpreters of Islamic law — of Lebanon and Uganda, as well as other prominent Islamic scholars.</p>
<p>It also follows the release in June of Pope Francis’s <a href="http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/6/15/popes-climate-encyclical-calls-for-urgent-action.html" rel="nofollow">first encyclical on the environment</a>, which was similarly rooted in religious teachings and called on Christians to fight climate change.</p>
<p>Muslim leaders plan to present their document at an upcoming conference in Paris, where international negotiators are set to hash out a global plan to combat climate change.</p>
<p>The Sierra Club on Tuesday issued a statement <a href="http://content.sierraclub.org/press-releases/2015/08/sierra-club-statement-islamic-declaration-climate-change" rel="nofollow">lauding the symposium</a> for its declaration. “This landmark declaration adds more voices of faith to the chorus of leaders from all backgrounds — including the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and many others — who have emphasized the need to act on a crisis that knows no borders and excludes no one on Earth,” said executive director Michael Brune.</p>
<p>The authors of the Islamic declaration ended the document with a quote by the Prophet Muhammad: “The world is sweet and verdant, and verily Allah has made you stewards in it, and He sees how you acquit yourselves.”</p>

<p>Three years after Ecuador’s government granted political asylum to Julian Assange in its small ground-floor London embassy, the founder of WikiLeaks is still there – beyond the reach of the government whose vice president, Joe Biden, has labeled him “a digital terrorist." The Obama administration wants Assange in a U.S. prison, so that the only mouse he might ever see would be scurrying across the floor of a solitary-confinement cell.</p>
<p>Above and beyond Assange’s personal freedom, what’s at stake includes the impunity of the United States and its allies to relegate transparency to a mythical concept, with democracy more rhetoric than reality. From the Vietnam War era to today – from aerial bombing and torture to ecological disasters and financial scams moving billions of dollars into private pockets – the high-up secrecy hiding key realities from the public has done vast damage. No wonder economic and political elites despise WikiLeaks for its disclosures.</p>
<p>During the last five years, since the release of the infamous “Collateral Murder” video, the world has changed in major ways for democratic possibilities, with WikiLeaks as a catalyst. It’s sadly appropriate that Assange is so deplored and reviled by so many in the upper reaches of governments, huge corporations and mass media. For such powerful entities, truly informative leaks to the public are plagues that should be eradicated as much as possible.</p>
<p>Notably, in the U.S. media, Assange is often grouped together with whistleblowers. He is in fact a journalistic editor and publisher. In acute contrast to so many at the top of the corporate media and governmental food chains, Assange insists that democracy requires the "consent of the governed" to be informed consent. While powerful elites work 24/7 to continually gain the uninformed consent of the governed, WikiLeaks has opposite concerns.</p>
<p>Genuine journalistic liberty exists only to the extent that overt or internalized censorship is absent. Especially in a society such as the United States with enduring press freedoms (the First Amendment is bruised and battered but still on its feet), the ultimate propaganda war zone is between people's ears. So much has been surrendered, often unwittingly and unknowingly. Waving the white flag at dominant propaganda onslaughts can only help democracy to expire.</p>
<p>Julian Assange has effectively insisted that another media world is possible and the corporate warfare state is unacceptable. Not coincidentally, the U.S. government wants to capture Assange and put him away, incommunicado, in a prison cell.</p>
<p>Last week, in Sweden, most but not all of the sexual-assault allegations against Assange expired. Still, Assange notes, “I haven't even been charged.” And Sweden’s government – while claiming that it is strictly concerned about adhering to its laws – has refused to limit the legal scope to its own judicial process.</p>
<p>As the BBC reports, “Assange sought asylum three years ago to avoid extradition to Sweden, fearing he would then be sent to the U.S. and put on trial for releasing secret American documents.” Closely aligned with Washington, the Swedish government refuses to promise that it would not turn Assange over to the U.S. government for extradition.</p>
<p>"Julian Assange has spent more time incarcerated in the small rooms of the embassy, with no access to fresh air or exercise and contrary to international law, than he could ever spend in a Swedish prison on these allegations,” says one of his lawyers, Helena Kennedy.</p>
<p>While government leaders have ample reasons to want to impale his image on a media spike and put him in prison for decades, many corporate titans – including venerated innovator billionaires of Silicon Valley – are not much more kindly disposed. The extent of their relentless commitments to anti-democratic greed has been brilliantly deconstructed in Assange's 2014 book "When Google Met WikiLeaks."</p>
<p>"Google's geopolitical aspirations are firmly enmeshed within the foreign-policy agenda of the world’s largest superpower," Assange wrote. "As Google's search and internet service monopoly grows, and as it enlarges its industrial surveillance cone to cover the majority of the world’s population, rapidly dominating the mobile phone market and racing to extend internet access in the global south, Google is steadily becoming the internet for many people. Its influence on the choices and behavior of the totality of individual human beings translates to real power to influence the course of history."</p>
<p>As for courage – which too often is the stuff of mystifying legends about heroes on pedestals – Assange’s observations might help us to grasp how it can gradually be summoned from within ourselves. Worth pondering: “Courage is not the absence of fear. Only fools have no fear. Rather, courage is the intellectual mastery of fear by understanding the true risks and opportunities of the situation and keeping those things in balance.”</p>
<p>Assange added: “It is not simply having prejudice about what the risks are, but actually testing them. There are all sorts of myths that go around about what can be done and what cannot be done. It’s important to test. You don’t test by jumping off a bridge. You test by jumping off a footstool, and then jumping off something a bit higher, and a bit higher.”</p>
<p>While visiting him last fall and a couple of months ago, I found Assange no less insightful during informal conversations. This is a dangerous person, in words and deeds – dangerous to the overlapping agendas of large corporations and governments in service to each other – dangerous to those who constantly make a killing from war, vast inequities and plunder of the planet.</p>
