Florida’s GOP Governor Ron DeSantis also addressed the Democrats’ January 6th infatuation during a Thursday press conference.
DeSantis noted the media didn’t milk the shooting and attempted assassination of Republican Congressman Steve Scalise the way they are milking the Capitol event.

After Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas called the January 6th debacle a “violent terrorist attack,” Alex Jones responded by explaining that Cruz is trying to position himself to politically stay distanced from Trump supporters.
The mother of Ashli Babbit, the Trump supporter who was shot and killed inside the Capitol Building on January 6th, stood by Congresswoman Greene and told media reporters, “You’re not the Queen, Nancy Pelosi.”
The woman called for the release of the tens of thousands of hours of footage from security cameras in the Capitol that day.

The UK government had admitted that the evidence for the efficacy of face masks stopping the spread of COVID-19 in schools is “not conclusive.”
Schools were ordered once again to instruct pupils to wear face masks in classrooms to stop the spread of Omicron, despite warnings that the face coverings are damaging learning.
Now authorities have been forced to acknowledge that proof face masks prevent the spread of the virus is statistically insignificant.
“The government’s own study in the autumn did not provide proof of a statistically significant impact,” reports <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-59895934">BBC News</a>.
“Schools where face coverings were used in October 2021 saw a reduction two to three weeks later in Covid absences from 5.3% to 3% – a drop of 2.3 percentage points.”
“In schools which did not use face coverings absences fell from 5.3% to 3.6% – a fall of 1.7 percentage points.”
“It said this was not statistically significant and the greater reduction in schools where masks were worn could be down to chance.”

Despite the results of the report, which also concluded that face masks could harm learning, “a full analysis of the costs versus benefits of the policy has not been done.”
<a href="https://summit.news/2021/11/30/oxford-professor-official-data-shows-face-masks-made-no-meaningful-difference-to-infection-rates/">According to</a> University of Oxford Professor Jim Naismith, when England dropped face mask mandates back in July and Scotland maintained them, it made “no meaningful difference” to infection rates.
We previously highlighted the comments of UK government SAGE adviser Dr Colin Axon, who dismissed masks as “comfort blankets” that do virtually nothing, noting that the COVID-19 virus particle is up to 5,000 times smaller than the holes in the mask.
“The small sizes are not easily understood but an imperfect analogy would be to imagine marbles fired at builders’ scaffolding, some might hit a pole and rebound, but obviously most will fly through,” Axon said.
A study in Denmark involving 6,000 participants also found that “there was no statistically significant difference between those who wore masks and those who did not when it came to being infected by Covid-19,” the Spectator <a href="https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/do-masks-stop-the-spread-of-covid-19-">reported</a>.
And yet face masks are a key component of the religion of fear, and are therefore likely to <a href="https://summit.news/2021/11/22/ny-times-experts-says-face-masks-could-become-permanent/">become permanent</a> in numerous settings.

Fusion energy is a reason to be excited about the future

Fusion energy is perhaps the longest of long shots. To build a fusion reactor is essentially to create an artificial star. Scientists have been studying the physics of fusion <a href="https://adsabs.harvard.edu/full/1920Obs....43..341E">for a century</a> and working to harness the process for decades. Yet almost every time researchers make an advance, the goal posts seem to recede even farther in the distance.
Still, the enormous potential of fusion makes it hard to ignore. It’s a technology that could safely provide an immense and steady torrent of electricity, harnessing abundant fuel made from seawater to ignite the same reaction that powers the sun. It would produce no greenhouse gases and minimal waste compared to conventional energy sources.
With global average temperatures rising and energy demands growing, the quest for fusion is timelier than ever: It could help solve both these problems at the same time. But despite its promise, fusion is often treated as a scientific curiosity rather than a must-try moonshot — an actual, world-changing solution to a massive problem.
The latest episode of <a href="https://www.vox.com/unexplainable/">Unexplainable</a>, Vox’s podcast about unsolved mysteries in science, asks scientists about their decades-long pursuit of a star in a bottle. They talk about their recent progress and why fusion energy remains such a challenge. And they make the case for not only continuing fusion research, but aggressively expanding and investing in it — even if it won’t light up the power grid anytime soon.
 
With some of the most powerful machines ever built, scientists are trying to refine delicate, subatomic mechanics to achieve a pivotal milestone: getting more energy out of a fusion reaction than they put in. Researchers say they are closer than ever.
Nuclear fission is what happens when big atoms like uranium and plutonium split apart and release energy. These reactions powered the very first atomic bombs, and today they power conventional nuclear reactors.
Fusion is even more potent. It’s what happens when the nuclei of small atoms stick together, fusing to create a new element and releasing energy. The most common form is two hydrogen atoms fusing to create helium.
The reason that fusion generates so much energy is that the new element weighs a smidgen less than the sum of its parts. That tiny bit of lost matter is converted into energy according to Albert Einstein’s famous formula, E = mc2. “E” stands for energy and “m” stands for mass.
The last part of the formula is “c,” a constant that measures the speed of light — 300,000 kilometers per second, which is then squared. So there’s an enormous multiplier for matter that’s converted into energy, making fusion an extraordinarily powerful reaction.
These basics are well understood, and researchers are confident that it’s possible to harness it in a useful way, but so far, it’s been elusive.
“It’s a weird thing, because we absolutely know that the fundamental theory works. We’ve seen it demonstrated,” said <a href="https://ners.engin.umich.edu/people/kuranz-carolyn/">Carolyn Kuranz</a>, a plasma physicist at the University of Michigan. “But trying to do it in a lab has provided us a lot of challenges.”
For a demonstration, one only has to look up at the sun during the day (but not directly, because you’ll hurt your eyes). Even from 93 million miles away, our nearest star generates enough energy to heat up the Earth through the vacuum of space.

But the sun has an advantage that we don’t have here on Earth: It is very, very big. One of the difficulties with fusion is that atomic nuclei — the positively charged cores of atoms — normally repel each other. To overcome that repulsion and spark fusion, you have to get the atoms moving really fast in a confined space, which makes collisions more likely.
A star like the sun, which is about <a href="https://www.space.com/17001-how-big-is-the-sun-size-of-the-sun.html">333,000 times the mass of Earth</a>, generates gravity that accelerates atoms toward its center — heating them up, confining them, and igniting fusion. The fusion reactions then provide the energy to speed up other atomic nuclei and trigger even more fusion reactions.
Imitating the sun on Earth is a tall order. Humans have been able to trigger fusion, but in ways that are uncontrolled, like in thermonuclear weapons (sometimes called <a href="https://www.livescience.com/53280-hydrogen-bomb-vs-atomic-bomb.html">hydrogen bombs</a>). Fusion has also been demonstrated in laboratories, but under conditions that consume far more energy than the reaction produces. The reaction generally requires creating a high-energy state of matter known as <a href="https://www.psfc.mit.edu/vision/what_is_plasma">plasma</a>, which has quirks and behaviors that scientists are still trying to understand.
To make fusion useful, scientists need to trigger it in a controlled way that yields far more energy than they put in. That energy can then be used to boil water, spin a turbine, or generate electricity. Teams around the world are studying different ways to accomplish this, but the approaches tend to fall into two broad categories.
One involves using magnets to contain the plasma. This is the approach used by <a href="https://www.iter.org/">ITER</a>, the world’s largest fusion project, currently under construction in southern France.
The other category involves confining the fusion fuel and compressing it in a tiny space with the aid of lasers. This is the approach used by the <a href="https://lasers.llnl.gov/">National Ignition Facility</a> (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

Replicating a star requires doing this research at massive scales, so fusion experiments often involve the most powerful scientific instruments ever built. ITER’s <a href="https://www.ga.com/general-atomics-to-ship-world-s-most-powerful-magnet-to-iter">central solenoid</a>, for example, can generate a magnetic force strong enough to hoist an aircraft carrier 6 feet out of the water.
Building hardware to withstand these extreme conditions is its own scientific and engineering challenge. Managing such massive experiments has also been a struggle. ITER started with an initial cost estimate of 6.6 billion euros, which has since more than tripled. It began construction in 2007 and its first experiments are set to begin in 2025.
An upside to the intricacy of fusion reactions is that it is almost impossible to cause a runaway reaction or meltdown of the sort that have devastated fission power plants like Chernobyl. If a fusion reactor is disrupted, the reaction rapidly fizzles out. In addition, the main “waste” product of hydrogen fusion is helium, an inert gas. The process can induce some reactor materials to become radioactive, but the radioactivity is much lower, and the quantity of hazardous waste is far smaller, compared to conventional nuclear power plants. So nuclear fusion energy could become one of the <a href="https://www.iter.org/mach/safety">safest sources of electricity</a>.
For policymakers, investing in an expensive research project that may not yield fruit for decades, if at all, is a tough sell. Scientific progress doesn’t always keep up with political timelines: A politician who greenlights a fusion project might not even live to see it become a viable energy source — so they certainly won’t be able to brag about their success by the time the next election rolls around.
In the United States, funding for fusion research has been <a href="https://fire.pppl.gov/us_fusion_plan_1976.pdf">erratic over the years</a> and far below the levels government analysts say is needed to make the technology a reality. The US Department of Energy currently spends about <a href="https://www.science.org/content/article/cost-skyrockets-united-states-share-iter-fusion-project">$500 million on fusion</a> per year, compared to almost <a href="https://science.osti.gov/-/media/budget/pdf/sc-budget-request-to-congress/fy-2021/FY_2021_SC_Cong_Funding_by_Appropriation.pdf?la=en&hash=4414B38C3007091A1F394F56BCB8566AF261C2E8">$1 billion on fossil fuel energy and $2.7 billion on renewables</a>. Investment in fusion seems even tinier next to other major programs like NASA (<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/updated_fy_2021_spend_plan_june_2021.pdf">$23 billion</a>) or the military (<a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/2638711/the-department-of-defense-releases-the-presidents-fiscal-year-2022-defense-budg/">$700 billion</a>).
So from its basic physics to government budgets, fusion energy has a lot working against it.
Working in fusion’s favor, however, are scientists and engineers who think it’s not just possible, but inevitable.
“I’m a true believer. I do think we can solve this problem,” said <a href="https://www.physics.ucla.edu/~tcarter/">Troy Carter</a>, a plasma physicist at the University of California Los Angeles. “It will take time, but the real issue is getting the resources brought to bear on these issues.”
Investors are also getting in the game, placing billion-dollar bets on <a href="https://qz.com/2086122/nuclear-fusion-startups-get-billions-in-funding-but-cop26-not-sold/">private startup companies developing their own fusion strategies</a>.
The journey toward fusion has yielded benefits for other fields, particularly in plasma physics, which is used extensively in manufacturing semiconductors for electronics. “Plasma processing is one of the things that make your iPhones possible,” said <a href="https://www.ornl.gov/content/kathryn-mccarthy">Kathryn McCarthy</a>, a fusion researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
And despite the hurdles, there have been some real advances. Researchers at NIF reported last summer that they <a href="https://www.llnl.gov/news/national-ignition-facility-experiment-puts-researchers-threshold-fusion-ignition">achieved their best results yet</a> — 1.3 megajoules of output from 1.9 megajoules of input — putting them closer than ever to energy-positive fusion. “We’re on the threshold of ignition,” said <a href="https://st.llnl.gov/research/people/tammy-ma">Tammy Ma</a>, a plasma physicist at NIF.
To break out of its rut, fusion will need to be more than a science experiment. Just as space exploration is more than astronomy, fusion is much more than physics. It should be a leading tool in the fight against the world’s most urgent problems, from climate change to lifting people out of poverty.
<a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/content/documents/17480PB8.pdf">Increasing energy access</a> is closely linked to improving health, economic growth, and social stability. Yet close to a <a href="https://ourworldindata.org/energy-access#access-to-electricity">billion people still don’t have electricity</a> and many more only have intermittent power, so there is an urgent humanitarian need for more energy.
At the same time, the window for limiting climate change is slamming shut, and <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-data">electricity and heat production</a> remain the dominant sources of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere. To meet one of the goals of the Paris climate agreement — limiting warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius this century — the world needs to cut greenhouse gas emissions by half or more by 2030, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Many of the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters are also aiming to zero out their contributions to climate change by the middle of the century. Making such drastic cuts in emissions means phasing out fossil fuels as quickly as possible and rapidly deploying much cleaner sources of energy.
The technologies of today may not be up to the task of resolving the tension between the need for more energy and the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. A problem like climate change is an argument for placing bets on all kinds of far-reaching energy solutions, but fusion may be the technology with the highest upside. And on longer time scales, closer to the 2040s and 2050s, it could be a real solution.
With more investment from governments and the private sector, scientists could speed up their pace of progress and experiment with even more approaches to fusion. In the US, where much of the research is conducted at national laboratories, this would mean convincing your representatives in Congress to get excited about fusion and ultimately to spend more money. Lawmakers can also encourage private companies to get into the game by, for example, pricing carbon dioxide emissions to create incentives for clean energy research.
The key, according to Carter, is to ensure support for fusion remains steady. “Given the level of importance here and the amount of money invested in energy, the current investment in fusion is a drop in the bucket,” Carter said. “You could imagine ramping it up orders of magnitude to get the job done.”
He added that funding for fusion doesn’t have to cannibalize resources from other clean energy technologies, like wind, solar, and nuclear power. “We need to invest across the board,” Carter said.
For now, the big fusion experiments at NIF and ITER will continue inching forward. At NIF, scientists will continue refining their process and steadily work their way up toward energy-positive fusion. ITER is scheduled to begin operation in 2025 and start hydrogen fusion experiments in 2035.
Artificial star power might not illuminate the world for decades, but the foundations have to be laid now through research, development, and deployment. It may very well become humanity’s crowning achievement, more than a century in the making.

I remember watching the assault on the US Capitol last January in a state of complete disbelief. Even today, a year later, it’s hard to believe that it actually happened.
But I also remember thinking, once the shock of that day subsided, that the insurrection would be a transformative moment for the Republican Party. It simply had to be. The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/31/us/trump-election-lie.html">election lies</a>, the inflammatory rhetoric, <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/22217822/us-capitol-attack-trump-right-wing-media-misinformation">the misinformation</a> — it all led to the violence that day. And if that wasn’t enough, the fact that people were marching through the Capitol building <a href="https://www.axios.com/trump-hang-mike-pence-january-6-audio-4f147245-becf-4766-ac60-7acece6862be.html">chanting</a> “hang Mike Pence” seemed like it should’ve prompted a course correction from the GOP.
Instead, the Republican Party has become more extreme and more illiberal. We haven’t seen any eruptions of violence like the riot on January 6, but the GOP remains <a href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/a-majority-of-republican-voters-actively-want-trump-to-run-for-president-again/">in thrall to Trump</a>, Republicans across the country <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/09/13/politics/trump-big-lie-gop-belief/index.html">continue to believe</a> the lies about the 2020 election, and the party appears to be laying <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2022/01/january-6-insurrection-trump-coup-2024-election/620843/">the legal and rhetorical groundwork</a> for something like an electoral coup in 2024.

So I reached out to Sam Adler-Bell, the co-host (along with Matthew Sitman) of the podcast <a href="https://know-your-enemy-1682b684.simplecast.com/">Know Your Enemy</a>, an indispensable listen for anyone interested in the conservative movement, and the author of <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/164408/young-intellectuals-illiberal-revolution-conservatism">a recent essay</a> in the New Republic about the future of the American right.
Adler-Bell’s piece is about the intellectual foundations of a radical, post-liberal conservatism in the ascendant — a faction being called the “New Right.” They hate the Republican establishment and they’ve essentially abandoned liberal democracy. These are not the people who sacked the Capitol, but they are part of the climate that made that day possible in the first place. And while they may hold establishment Republicans in contempt, they’ve helped remake the party in their image.
Beyond the significance of January 6, 2021, and how America got to that point, Adler-Bell and I discuss the evolution of conservative media, why American conservatism is now a counter-revolutionary movement, and where he thinks the right can go from here.
A transcript of our conversation, lightly edited for length and clarity, follows.
<h4>Sean Illing</h4>
From our perch nearly a year later, how do you situate January 6 in the broader right-wing cosmology?
<h4>Sam Adler-Bell</h4>
That’s a hard question. I’m not sure I have a fully satisfying take on how it all hangs together. I guess I think of January 6 as continuous with other events occurring among the illiberal right that have taken place over the course of 2020. So you could see versions of it in the <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/4/30/21243462/armed-protesters-michigan-capitol-rally-stay-at-home-order">occupations of state capitols</a> in early 2020, where people were carrying rifles inside state legislature buildings. There’s definitely overlap between the militia groups that were involved in those protests and the organizations I’d call the vanguard of the January 6 protests.
I would say that the next phase was the mobilization of militia groups during the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020. That was a moment where organized militia groups traveled to cities where there were protests in order to stand guard and protect private property. But they were also there to menace protesters, to carry guns, and of course, as we saw in <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/22792136/kyle-rittenhouse-verdict-militia-violence-self-defense">the Kyle Rittenhouse case</a>, two people ended up dead and another maimed.

Since you brought it up, I’ll ask: Do you think January 6 happens without the eruption of political energy we saw in the summer of 2020 following the murder of George Floyd?
<h4>Sam Adler-Bell</h4>
First, I want to be sure not to let Trump off the hook here. The minimal condition for January 6 is the sitting president saying, “No, I won the election. I won the election.” And even the phrase “stop the steal,” that’s an active intervention. It’s not like an abstract fight for election integrity. It’s a “We’re going there today to stop the steal,” the “steal” being what’s going to happen inside the chambers of the Capitol. And so the minimal condition, no question, is Trump not acknowledging that he lost the election.
In terms of what was motivating people on the ground, their willingness to be violent, their willingness to treat the moment as an existential threat — surely what happened in 2020 was an input. And I think that when you do talk to people on the right, as I do frequently, the 2020 uprisings after George Floyd’s murder have shaped their consciousness in a way that cannot be overstated.
Whether you agree with their account of why it happened and what it consisted of, which I tend not to, for them those protests and what they see as the license given to those protests by Democrats, by corporations, by all of progressive culture, felt like a real turning point, which contributes to this pervasive sense on the right that we’re at the point of no return.
<h4>Sean Illing</h4>
A lot of people focus on the LARPers and the QAnon enthusiasts and the militia types who stormed the Capitol, but I’m more interested in the high-minded conservatives who probably think those insurrectionists are buffoons but still see them as useful foot soldiers in a much bigger struggle to reclaim Western civilization, and this is really what <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/164408/young-intellectuals-illiberal-revolution-conservatism">your New Republic piece</a> is about. So tell me about intellectual currents on the right that helped prepare the ground for something like January 6.
<h4>Sam Adler-Bell</h4>
Throughout Trump’s presidency there’s been a concerted effort by an idiosyncratic and not entirely coherent group of conservative intellectuals to provide a high-minded, intellectual justification and kind of elaboration of what Trump represents.
The <a href="https://www.vox.com/2019/7/17/20696543/national-conservatism-conference-2019-trump">National Conservatism Conference</a>, which first took place in 2019, and then was repeated in 2021 in November, is representative of that. So is the <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/22278065/donald-trump-conservative-politics-charles-kesler">Claremont Institute</a>. And then there’s also the sort of post-liberal currents represented by people like Sohrab Ahmari and Patrick Deneen. And then there’s also this kind of Catholic theocratic tendency, in a way, that’s come to mainstream prominence in conservative politics, which is represented more by people like the Harvard professor Adrian Vermeule and Gladden Pappin at University of Dallas.
What these currents share is a sense that the conservative movement, as it operated pre-Trump, was not willing to wield state power to actually achieve conservative cultural ends and wasn’t sufficiently aware of the threat posed by the left.
This New Right no longer believes we’re in a neutral liberal contest between competing ideas and concepts of the good. They believe the progressive left have taken over every aspect of American society and wield an authoritarian power over what, in particular, white Christians are allowed to say and think in this country; therefore this kind of libertarian consensus — which has presided in American conservatism, especially since Reagan — which prescribes a kind of private traditionalism and a public-facing liberalism, is totally insufficient for this moment.
So elite conservative currents have tried to provide an intellectual scaffolding for Trumpism, which we should acknowledge is a little silly. Trump is Trump. As one of the young conservatives I talked to in my piece said, “He’s a moronic boomer who tapped into something by accident.” But this intellectual scaffolding that they’ve tried to provide, it combines elements that they think are sufficient to respond to that level of threat from the left.

I appreciate that the New Right looks at the establishment Republican Party and concludes that they haven’t been fighting a real culture war. I know people will read that and think I’m nuts because culture war is all the GOP does now, but they haven’t been doing it earnestly. What the GOP has done is create a cultural grievance machine that functions as a laundering device for corporatist economic policies. But these New Rightists are actual culture warriors and see through the con and they’re totally transparent about it.

No, it’s true. I don’t disagree. And I think one of the things about the term “culture war” in our discourse is that we tend to think of it as a sideshow, like a distraction from real politics. I think that’s wrong on the merits. Culture war is about how we define our social reality. It’s a competition over defining social reality, which is not a sideshow. And for the New Right, for these Trump-supporting culture warriors, this is the only game in town. They believe there’s no war but culture war. All materialist politics, they believe, is downstream of culture.

For someone not steeped in this world, it’s hard to understand the intensity of the New Right or something like the Claremont Institute, the genuine sense of emergency they feel. From their point of view, this really is the Alamo, right? It really is “charge the cockpit or you die.”

“Charge the cockpit or you die” is an appropriate reference because, as I’m sure you know, the person who wrote <a href="https://www.vox.com/2016/9/12/12862434/flight-93-election">the Flight 93 election piece</a>, Michael Anton, is a scholar at the Claremont Institute and is a prominent thinker in this milieu. [“The Flight 93 Election” was an <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/michael-antons-flight-93-election-trump-coup.html">influential 2016 essay</a> making the case that conservatives should support Trump despite his flaws because “death is certain” if Hillary Clinton won.]
He was briefly in the Trump administration, and Claremont plays a role in every aspect of this. It played a role in January 6 because John Eastman, a constitutional scholar who wrote <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/09/the-horrifying-legal-blueprint-for-trumps-war-on-democracy.html">a series of memos</a> outlining how the vice president could “legitimately” overturn the election, is a <a href="https://www.claremont.org/scholar-bio/john-c-eastman/">scholar at Claremont</a>.
And a lot of these young right-wing intellectuals that I wrote about have gone through Claremont’s programs. They’re one of these conservative institutions that do a really good job at mentorship. They provide young, smart intellectuals with opportunities to get together and feel like they’re reading into the counter-tradition of conservative political philosophy, and feel like they’re being led into this little secret world where all the answers are clear and the moral ends are explicit and shared.
Claremont has been punching way above its weight in the Trump era, and that’s because people like Anton identified the potential utility for populist Christian conservatives in Trump much earlier than the rest of the conservative movement. When he wrote Flight 93, he wrote it under a pseudonym. And it was at a time where most of the intellectual right despised Trump and were distancing themselves from him. And Claremont made an early good bet on Trumpism, and it’s paid off for them. Because for a long time they were considered ultra-conservative weirdos in California who are obsessed with political philosophy, but don’t really play in the big-kid tent.
But in the Trump era, they’ve had their fingerprints on many of the big events. They also helped push <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQzaLwfEQdk">the anti-CRT backlash</a>, and before that they played a big role in crafting <a href="https://www.thebulwark.com/the-origins-of-trumps-slapdash-last-second-1776-report/">the 1776 Project</a>, which was the last thing that the Trump administration did and basically their counternarrative to <a href="https://www.vox.com/identities/2019/8/19/20812238/1619-project-slavery-conservatives">the 1619 Project</a>.

I have to ask about the role of conservative media in all of this. We learned that <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/13/business/media/fox-news-trump-jan-6-meadows.html">several Fox News anchors</a> were texting Mark Meadows, the former chief of staff for Trump, during the January 6 riot urging him to get Trump to do or say something to stop it, while a lot of on-air commentary continued (and continues) to amplify the bogus election fraud claims.
Do you see the media as a cause or symptom?

Oh, it’s way more a cause than a symptom. As important as the Claremont Institute is, Fox News remains much, much more important. And post-war conservatism — meaning conservatism after 1945, the movement launched in the pages of National Review by William Buckley — has always been a media phenomenon, that’s not new.
And the necessity to create counterinstitutions has always been a part of the conservative strategy because they have always seen themselves as a besieged minority, at least in elite culture. They needed to have counterinstitutions that deprogram the masses from their progressive indoctrination. And that’s the role that Fox News has played.
It’s probably impossible to overstate the fact that Trump had a personal propaganda channel which would never contradict him, or rarely contradict him. I mean, Tucker Carlson has the most popular news program in America. And to bring it back to January 6, he’s putting out a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/21/business/jonah-goldberg-steve-hayes-quit-fox-tucker-carlson.html">documentary</a> about how it was all an FBI hoax designed to give the liberal deep state justification for hounding down conservative activists and throwing them in prison. And that’s the most popular show on prime time news.

What lesson do you think the New Right draws from January 6? The fact that it happened at all, that it didn’t provoke any kind of course correction from the GOP, that it reinforced their anti-democratic drift — I have to believe most New Right-types look at all that and think to themselves, “We won.”

I don’t know if they think, “We won.” I think that it may have encouraged them in their ongoing battle against the more moderate forces in conservative politics, and encouraged them that they could win that battle. I’m sure that it also reinforced this sense that the party should never disown anybody to their right.
One of the things that distinguish the New Right from the traditional Buckleyite conservative politics is that Buckley’s role in the conservative movement was to help set the guardrails. He was the one who disowned the John Birch Society. He was the one who kicked people like <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/02/books/02sobran.html">Joe Sobran</a> out of acceptable conservative politics. He was the one who, if you got too racist or too anti-Semitic, you would get read out of conservatism, whether you were an activist or an intellectual or a pundit.
The perspective of the New Right, certainly people like Anton and people at Claremont Institute, is: no enemies to our right, and anything we do to shave off the aggressive or populist edges of conservatism is doing the left’s bidding for the left. And there’s enough people on MSNBC and in the pages of the New York Times who will try to demonize the rest of us by stigmatizing the right flank.
So there was a moment after January 6, where it seemed like the right was ready to disown Trump. They were ready to disown everybody who was involved in January 6. And for all kinds of reasons that was a very brief window that didn’t last. And certainly the fact that it didn’t last reinforced the New Right’s perspective that there was no sense in trying to win some kind of acceptance in the mainstream by demonizing the far-right crazies. And I think that’s a very disturbing prospect.

Clinton Lawyer Threatens Lawsuits to Disqualify House Republicans For “Insurrection” Ahead of Midterms

Democrat legal strategist Marc Elias is threatening to sue House Republicans who played a role in organizing former President Trump’s January 6 speech preceding the unruly protest at the Capitol building.
Elias, who served as Hillary Clinton’s general counsel in her 2016 campaign, claimed in a tweet last month that Republicans who “engaged in insurrection” could be disqualified from running for office in 2022 under the 14th Amendment.
“My prediction for 2022: Before the midterm election, we will have a serious discussion about whether individual Republican House Members are disqualified by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment from serving in Congress. We may even see litigation,” Elias tweeted.

Perhaps labeling Republican lawmakers as “insurrectionists” pertaining the January 6 protests is what “triggered” the GOP, especially given none of the protesters who’ve been arrested were federally charged for anything even related to insurrection.
Though Elias didn’t name names, it’s likely the recent Rolling Stone <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/exclusive-jan-6-organizers-met-congress-white-house-1245289/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hit piece</a> claiming a handful of pro-Trump lawmakers planned the Capitol “insurrection.”
As general counsel to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, Elias was responsible for hiring Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm behind the infamous “Steele Dossier” alleging Donald Trump “colluded” with the Russian government.
Elias was also a driving force behind dozens of Democrat lawsuits in 19 states to overturn voter fraud protections and <a href="https://newrepublic.com/article/159279/marc-elias-lawyer-democrat-stop-trump-rigging-2020-election" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expand mail-in voting</a> in the 2020 presidential election.
Former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon warned the GOP not to take the 2022 midterms for granted despite the Democrats’ and Joe Biden’s plummeting poll numbers, because Elias is a ruthless political operator and a “fighter”.
“He’s pure evil, but man that brother is smart, tough. He’s the standard. We gotta match that guy. This is not about winning 10 or 15 or 20 seats and taking over the House. This could be a landmark in American political history,” Bannon said on “War Room” last month.

However, the argument can be made that the courts lack the jurisdiction to litigate Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

Circuit, that provision “states not merely that each House ‘may judge’ these matters, but that each House ‘shall be the Judge.’” Hence, the courts “simply lack jurisdiction” to adjudicate Disqualification Clause contests.

While this sort of litigation abuse is unethical under each state’s rules of professional conduct, don’t expect that to deter Elias – he’s already been <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/sites/default/files/images/admin/2021/Press/Sanctions.pdf?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=" target="_blank">sanctioned</a> by the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and it hasn’t slowed him down.

Texas Governor Abbott Suing Biden Admin Over National Guard Vaccine Mandate

Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) sent a letter to the Adjutant General of the Texas National Guard on Tuesday, announcing his intention to sue the Biden administration for attempting to force Texas National Guard members to take a Covid vaccine.

<a href="https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/O-NorrisTracy202201040280.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">In the document</a> delivered to Major General Tracy R. Norris, Abbott strongly reminds all Texas National Guard personnel under his chain of command that they cannot punish unvaccinated members.
“Do not punish any guardsman for choosing not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine,” Abbott wrote.
As governor, Abbott is the commander-in-chief of the Texas National Guard.
“Although my order has been in effect for months now, President Biden has muddied the waters with a vaccine mandate from the U.S. Department of Defense,” he explained. “To clear up any confusion, this letter addresses all Texas guardsmen who are serving in a Title 32 status or a state active duty status.”
The Texas governor noted that “unless President Biden federalizes the Texas National Guard in accordance with Title 10 of the U.S. Code,” he is not their commander-in-chief under US Constitution or Texas’ state Constitution.
“As long as I am your commander-in-chief, I will not tolerate efforts to compel receipt of a COVID19 vaccine,” Abbott added.

According to Abbott, “President Biden still poses a career-ending threat to Texas’s unvaccinated guardsmen,” because his administration is threatening to cut off retirement benefits for unvaccinated guardsmen and barring them from participating in certain training activities.
“[The Biden administration] has also warned that unvaccinated guardsmen will be discharged from the Texas National Guard,” he wrote. “In short, the Biden DoD is threatening to take direct action against guardsmen who do not submit to a vaccine mandate that the State of Texas declines to enforce.”
The Texas commander-in-chief also told his state militia members he’ll fight to protect their freedoms from the federal government, and that’s why he’s “suing the Biden Administration over its latest unconstitutional vaccine mandate.”
On the second page of the letter, Abbott detailed how the federal courts will ultimately rule whether or not Biden violates the U.S. Constitution by undermining the Texas governor’s commander-in-chief power instead of federalizing the state’s guardsmen.
If Biden were to federalize the Texas National Guard, he could hypothetically mandate them to get a Covid vaccine.
“Win or lose, President Biden must be held accountable for his unconscionable willingness to hollow out the Texas National Guard,” Abbott concluded. “Please know that I am grateful for your service and will continue fighting on your behalf.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a notice regarding the lawsuit, stating, “Neither the President nor federal military officials can order the Governor of Texas and non-federalized National Guardsmen to comply with a vaccination mandate or to direct a particular disciplinary action for failure to comply.”
<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/12/29/national-guard-federal-vaccine-mandate-oklahoma/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Last week</a>, Gov. Kevin Stitt (R-OK) lost a similar case where he challenged the Pentagon’s coronavirus vaccination mandate for his state National Guard.
In the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.scribd.com/document/549844314/Oklahoma-National-Guard-ruling#download" target="_blank">ruling</a>, Judge Stephen P. Friot wrote, “Adding a tenth … vaccine to the list of nine that all service members are already required to take would hardly amount to ‘an enormous and transformative expansion [of the] regulatory authority’ the Secretary of Defense already possesses.”
On Monday, a federal judge in Texas blocked the Department of Defense from punishing 35 Navy members who refused to take the experimental vaccines.
“The Navy service members in this case seek to vindicate the very freedoms they have sacrificed so much to protect,” the judge wrote. “The COVID-19 pandemic provides the government no license to abrogate those freedoms. There is no COVID-19 exception to the First Amendment. There is no military exclusion from our Constitution.”
