Karachi:
TikTok was running again in Pakistan Saturday after a provincial court lifted suspension of the popular social media service but ordered it to address complaints that it hosted objectionable content.
The Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) blocked access Thursday for a third time after a ruling by a Sindh court hearing a private citizen's petition against the Chinese-owned app.
Freedom of speech advocates have long criticised creeping government censorship and control of Pakistan's internet and media.
TikTok's suspension was slammed by the video sharing platform's huge fan base in Pakistan, many of whom use it to market and sell goods online. But its critics in the deeply conservative Muslim nation say it promotes vulgarity and LGBTQ content.
TikTok has been shut down twice before in Pakistan because of alleged "indecent" videos -- most recently in March, after which the platform pledged better moderation.
It said Wednesday it had removed more than six million videos from its Pakistan service in the past three months alone -- around 15 percent featuring "adult nudity and sexual activities".
A PTA official told AFP the court had Friday revoked its earlier order banning the app, and users confirmed it was running again.
Still, even senior Pakistan officials appeared confused by the to- and fro-ing.
"I am baffled after reading... verdict on suspension of TikTok," Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted.

Google honoured Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who founded the Paralympic movement, with a Doodle on his 122nd birth anniversary on Saturday. The illustration was made by Baltimore-based guest artist Ashanti Fortson.
The doodle "celebrates the 122nd birthday of Jewish, German-born British neurologist Professor Sir Ludwig "Poppa" Guttmann, founder of the Paralympic movement," the Google Doodle website said.
Guttman was born on July 3, 1899 in Tost, Germany, which now comes under Poland. He was forced to leave Germany in wake of the increasing persecution of Jews during the Nazi rule. Guttman, who was one of the top neurosurgeons of Germany that time, escaped to England in 1939 with his family.
As the head of the spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1948, he organised an archery competition for wheelchair users, which later came to be known as the "Stoke Mandeville Games", breaking down barriers of disability for sports. It later evolved into <a href="https://sports.ndtv.com/athletics/denied-visas-indian-para-archers-pull-out-of-paralympics-qualification-event-2478035" target="_self">Paralympic Games</a>.
With global attention, Stoke Mandeville Games went international in 1960 and saw participation of about 400 athletes with disabilities from across the world.
Guttmann was knighted by Britain's Queen in 1966. He died on March 18, 1980.

A fire on the ocean surface west of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula early on Friday has been extinguished, state oil company Pemex said, blaming a gas leak from an underwater pipeline for sparking the blaze captured in videos that went viral.

Bright orange flames jumping out of water resembling molten lava was dubbed an "eye of fire" on social media due to the blaze's circular shape, as it raged a short distance from a Pemex oil platform.
The fire took more than five hours to fully put out, according to Pemex.
The fire began in an underwater pipeline that connects to a platform at Pemex's flagship Ku Maloob Zaap oil development, the company's most important, four sources told Reuters earlier. Ku Maloob Zaap is located just up from the southern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.
Pemex said no injuries were reported, and production from the project was not affected after the gas leak ignited around 5:15 a.m. local time. It was completely extinguished by 10:30 am. The company added it would investigate the cause of the fire.
Pemex, which has a long record of major industrial accidents at its facilities, added it also shut the valves of the 12-inch-diameter pipeline.
Angel Carrizales, head of Mexico's oil safety regulator ASEA, wrote on Twitter that the incident "did not generate any spill." He did not explain what was burning on the water's surface.
Ku Maloob Zaap is Pemex's biggest crude oil producer, accounting for more than 40% of its nearly 1.7 million barrels of daily output.
"The turbomachinery of Ku Maloob Zaap's active production facilities were affected by an electrical storm and heavy rains," according to a Pemex incident report shared by one of Reuters' sources.
Company workers used nitrogen to control the fire, the report added.
Details from the incident report were not mentioned in Pemex's brief press statement and the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

San Francisco:
A computing network management tool by Kaseya was under cyberattack on Friday, prompting the US IT company to urge businesses to shut down servers to avoid ransomware.
Cybersecurity firm Huntress Labs said in a Reddit forum that it was working with partners targeted in the attack, and that some 200 businesses "have been encrypted."
Ransomware attacks typically involve locking away data in systems using encryption, making companies pay to regain access.
Kaseya describes itself as a leading provider of IT and security management services to small- and medium-sized businesses, meaning an attack would make them targets going into the Independence Day holiday weekend in the United States.
"We are in the process of investigating the root cause of the incident with an abundance of caution but we recommend that you immediately shutdown your VSA server until you receive further notice from us," Kaseya said in a message shared in a Reddit forum.
"It's critical that you do this immediately, because one of the first things the attacker does is shutoff administrative access to the VSA."
VSA is the company's flagship offering, designed to let companies manage networks of computers and printers from a single point. The company lists a US headquarters in Florida and an international headquarters in Ireland.
Kaseya said in a post that the apparent cyberattack may have been limited to a "small number" of its customers.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) put out word that it is "taking action to understand and address the recent supply-chain ransomware attack" against Kaseya VSA and the service providers using its software. CISA called on businesses to follow Kaseya's guidance and quickly shut down VSA servers to avoid having systems compromised.
The UN Security Council this week held its first formal public meeting on cybersecurity, addressing the growing threat of hacks to countries' key infrastructure -- an issue US President Joe Biden recently raised with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Several Security Council members acknowledged the grave dangers posed by cybercrime, notably ransomware attacks on key installations and companies.
Multiple US companies, including the computer group SolarWinds, the Colonial oil pipeline and the global meat giant JBS, have recently been targeted by ransomware attacks.
The FBI has blamed those attacks on hackers based in Russian territory.

Ottawa:
Ottawa prepared Friday to send military aircraft and other help to evacuate towns and fight more than 100 wildfires in western Canada fueled by a record-smashing heat wave.
According to wildfire officials, at least 143 fires were active in British Columbia, 77 of them sparked in the last two days. Most were caused by lightning strikes.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would convene an incident response group later in the day to address the emergency needs of the province, adding that he already spoke with British Columbia's premier, as well as local mayors and indigenous chiefs in communities under threat.
"We will be there to help," he told a news conference.
That will include military helicopters and possibly Hercules turboprop transport planes, Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan earlier told public broadcaster CBC.
"Canadian Forces are ready to support residents," he said in a Twitter message.
Roughly 1,000 people have already fled the wildfires in British Columbia, and authorities are searching for many who have gone missing.
The village of Lytton, 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Vancouver, was evacuated Wednesday night because of a fire that flared up suddenly and spread quickly.
The fire came a day after the village set a Canadian record-high temperature on Tuesday of 49.6 degrees Celsius (121 degrees Fahrenheit).
Fatalities have been reported in Canada's westernmost province, but an official toll has yet to be released, as members of the British Columbia coroner service headed into hotspots on Friday to begin investigating.
"Today our thoughts are mostly with families that are grieving, that are facing terrible loss," said Trudeau.
"But of course, we also have to reflect on the fact that extreme weather events are getting more frequent and climate change has a significant role to play in that."
Lytton resident Jeff Chapman told the CBC he witnessed his parents die in the fire that engulfed the town.
With only minutes to react, the elderly couple sought shelter from the smoke and flames in a trench in their backyard, as Chapman ran for safety at nearby rail tracks.
From that vantage, he said he saw the fires sweep across and destroy most of the town.
His distressed voice could be heard pleading for help over the crackling flames in a video on CBC. The ground, he said, was too hot to go back for his parents.
Meanwhile, a heat wave that stretched at the beginning of the week from the US state of Oregon to Canada's Arctic territories has started moving eastward, late Thursday touching parts of Ontario in central Canada.
British Columbia also warned Friday of flooding from melting mountain snow caps and glaciers under the heat dome, which occurs when hot air is trapped by high pressure fronts, heating the ground.

The London Times <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/5fd1fc80-da57-11eb-b92f-5fe539a30c29?shareToken=9474b011a3926fae92f2576626ec61d4">reports</a>: “Including fatigue, headache, sore throat and diarrhoea on the official list of Covid symptoms would pick up a third more cases of the virus, Calum Semple, a member of the Scientific advisory group for emergencies (Sage), said.”
“As older people are vaccinated, proportionally more younger people are having the disease and they have a different group of symptoms,” Semple asserted, adding, “By extending the symptom list, we think we’ll pick up about a third more cases.”
By including symptoms that are common for other illnesses such as flu, if a third more cases are suddenly ‘discovered, SAGE can then attempt to fan the flames of hysteria by claiming the country is experiencing another “wave” of COVID infections.
Calling the idea “mission creep,” commentator Maajid Nawaz suggested that adding more symptoms to the list is an excuse to artificially boost case numbers, which will then be used to argue for further lockdowns in the winter.

Nawaz posted a Twitter thread in which he explained how including new symptoms would be “misleadingly unhelpful” and that COVID numbers are already being inflated because three times more people are being tested compared to December.
“We are NOT finding more covid positives. All we are doing is testing far more people (3x more people) to get the equivalent result,” wrote Nawaz, pointing out that hospitalization numbers remain low.
Some experts have previously warned that flu cases were already being falsely counted as COVID cases in order to boost figures, with epidemiologist Knut Wittkowski <a href="https://summit.news/2021/01/05/epidemiologist-says-influenza-cases-are-being-counted-as-covid-19/">cautioning</a> that, “Influenza has been renamed COVID-19 in large part.”
Back in February, UK health authorities <a href="https://summit.news/2021/02/23/uk-health-authorities-announce-not-a-single-case-of-flu-detected-this-year/">announced</a> that not a single case of influenza had been detected this year, prompting some to express incredulity at the claim.
England is set to exit all COVID restrictions on July 19th, but that date was supposed to pass on June 21st before the government decided to extend it, citing the threat of the new delta variant.
