While Christianity is spreading rapidly throughout Nigeria, it has also provoked the wrath of many Muslims, who are doing all they can to stop its growth.According to a recent story, authorities in Jigawa seized two churches without notice and demolished them on the spot as their congregations were forced to watch:<blockquote>Nigerian Christians were alarmed after the authorities demolished two church buildings in Dutse, the capital of the northern state of Jigawa.On Jan. 11, bulldozers, escorted by police officers, tore down the buildings of the Redeem Christian Church of God and the Lord Chosen Church, World Watch Monitor reported.Rev. Yakubu Musa, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for Jigawa, said that the authorities arrived at the Redeem Church at around 10 a.m. The police blocked the entrance to prevent church members from entering the building, and those who tried to take pictures were chased away. The authorities started demolishing the second church at around 12 noon."It was a terrible experience, with so many Christians who witnessed the demolition crying. I felt so bitter because we were in a situation where you have been cheated and you cannot talk," said Musa.Alhaji Garba Isa, the Executive Secretary of Urban Development Board, said that the buildings were torn down because the churches were built without permits. He claimed that notices have been sent to the churches three times to discontinue the development of the buildings. However, Musa stated that neither the pastors of the church nor the leadership of CAN received a notice of demolition."They just came in unexpectedly and they demolished everything. Nobody was allowed to remove any valuables in the church buildings and other nearby properties," he said.He added that both churches have applied for the necessary documents but the government refused to grant them.Musa further noted that none of the 36 churches in Dutse have been given building permission because the government has not responded to the applications."We feel we are equally citizens of this country and we have the rights to be allowed to practise our religion. But this demolition was done out of injustice and discrimination," he remarked.Six more churches in Jigawa are slated for demolition. The authorities have not indicated any plans for compensation or other alternatives. The congregation of the two demolished churches will be holding services and other weekly programs out in the open.Jigawa is one of the 12 states that adopted Sharia in the 2000s. Nigeria is currently ranked on the Open Doors World Watch List as the 12th most difficult place to live in as a Christian. We are all human beings, nobody should catch you like a snail and slaughter because you believe in Jesus Christ," Bishop Diamond Emuobor, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, said on Wednesday, according to the Daily Post."We all would not die and those of us, who are alive, have the right to defend ourselves. Jesus says in the book of Luke that those who have no sword should sell their coats and buy one for the defense of their lives," he added, referring to Luke 22:36 as found in the Bible.Christians have been heavily persecuted and slaughtered at the hands of different Islamic radical groups, such as Boko Haram, but also the Fulani herdsmen, whose increasingly violent rampages have led to the deaths of dozens of Christians in this year alone.International Christian Concern reported earlier in January that herdsmen attackers killed 10 people and destroyed homes in an assault on the predominantly Christian village of Kwayine, Adamawa State.One of the victims who survived described what happened: "The Fulanis came into the village yesterday at about 2 p.m. They came upon us suddenly, chased us off, scattered us and burned our houses. We fled. I barely escaped with my life. Only God knows where some of our people are now. We don't know what we did to them."Although the Nigerian army has been fighting back against Boko Haram, the larger and more well-known terror group, ICC accused government officials of refusing to recognize that the Fulani are also now targeting Christians for their faith."This is yet another example of the government's failure to provide adequate protection for Christian communities in this region and refusal to stamp out the radical movements that cause these deadly attacks," said ICC Regional Manager Daniel Harris at the time."The government's refusal to recognize the Fulani militants as what they are, Islamic terrorists, threatens religious freedom and the lives of Christians in this region."Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need said that over 800 Christians and moderate Muslims in total were killed by the Fulani terrorists in the last few months of 2016, while at least 16 Christian churches were destroyed.Emuobor accused the Islamic radicals of waging "a war against God," but insisted that they would not win.The bishop also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to do more to stop the killing of Nigerian Christians, noting that people in the northern parts of the country are particularly at risk. A Jesus Christ figure at a Catholic memorial in Fournes-en-Weppes was likewise attacked by the Islamist militants.However, the group noted that the most notorious anti-Christian attack had to be the one against Fr. Jacques Hamel, who was killed by two young Islamists in the middle of mass at Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray church.Hamel reportedly shouted "Be gone, Satan!" as the men slit his throat. During Hamel's memorial service, Archbishop Dominique Lebrun cautioned those who might be tempted to carry the banner of Islamist extremism."You who are tormented by diabolical violence, you who are drawn to kill by a demonic, murderous madness, pray to God to free you from the devil's grip," he said. "We pray for you, we pray to Jesus who healed all those who were under the power of evil."A nun named Sister Helene, who witnessed the attack, said Hamel shouted at ISIS fanatics Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik Petitjean, both 19, to stop what they were doing. But they refused to listen, according to the Mirror. "It was then that one of them struck the first blow to his throat," she said. "Thinking I was going to die, I offered my life to God."Thankfully, Sister Helene survived the attack, although one of the nuns sustained some injuries because of the attack. The police later gunned down the fleeing suspects outside the church.
