Rand Paul Encourages Truckers To “Clog Up” Cities As DHS Scrambles To Stop Convoy From Disrupting Super Bowl

Still, this weekend, a more immediate threat could be a convoy headed to the Super Bowl in California.

“I’m all for it,” Paul said in the interview last Thursday. “Civil disobedience is a time-honored tradition in our country, from slavery to civil rights, you name it. Peaceful protest, clog things up, make people think about the mandates.”
“And some of this, we started,” he added. “We put [COVID-19] mandates on truckers coming across the border from Canada, so then they put mandates on, and the truckers are annoyed. They’re riding in a cab by themselves, most of them for eight, 10-hour long hauls, and they just want to do what they want to do. It’s their own business.”

“Freedom Convoy” demonstrations against medical tyranny have so far been peaceful across Canada for more than a week, causing congestion issues in Canada’s capital, Ottawa, and <a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/ford-considers-flying-car-parts-canada-factory-amid-canadian-trucker-blockade">blocking one of the most crucial</a> land ports on the U.S.-Canada border crossing that connects Detroit and Windsor, two regions responsible for a sizeable chunk of output for the North American auto industry. 
Paul added, “I hope the truckers do come to America, and I hope they clog up cities.”

“It’d be great, but the thing is, it wouldn’t shut the city down because the government workers haven’t come to work in two years anyway,” Paul added. “I don’t know if it’ll affect D.C. It’d be a nice change. We’d actually have some traffic.”

Paul was not alone in supporting the protesters. The threat of convoys clogging up metro areas in the U.S. was enough for the DHS to distribute a bulletin to law enforcement agencies last week. An agency spokesperson replied to an email request by The Epoch Times, saying: “We’re <a href="https://www.zerohedge.com/political/us-department-homeland-security-confirms-its-monitoring-reports-potential-truck-convoy">tracking reports</a> of a potential convoy that may be planning to travel to several U.S. cities.” 
The bulletin highlighted how a convoy of truckers could affect Sunday’s Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Bills banning members of Congress from trading stocks are gaining increased bipartisan support — including from a former skeptic, Speaker Nancy Pelosi — after a series of investigations involving potential insider trading by lawmakers, particularly in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic.
There’s <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/news/588630-76-percent-of-voters-support-banning-lawmakers-from-trading-stocks-poll">wide agreement among voters</a> that legislators should be banned from trading stocks while in Congress, since their position can give then access to information about companies and industries that ordinary people don’t have. While there are some policies in place to at least provide transparency about how legislators are making money from the stock market, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-stock-act-violations-penalties-consequences-2021-12">there aren’t significant punishments for violating those rules</a>.
In fact, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-stock-act-violations-senate-house-trading-2021-9">Business Insider’s Dave Levinthal</a> reported earlier this month, at least 55 members of Congress violated the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act in 2021 alone.
The law — better known as the STOCK Act — was passed in 2012 to curtail the use of inside information to trade stocks, but many lawmakers now believe it didn’t go far enough to curb abuses.
<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/conflicted-congress-key-findings-stock-act-finances-investing-2021-12">Business Insider’s reporting</a>, as well as the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/us/politics/david-perdue-stock-trades.html">high-profile investigations</a> of <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/3/20/21188144/senators-dumping-stock-as-market-tanks">Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) and former Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue</a> for suspiciously well-timed trades around the advent of the pandemic, have (somewhat belatedly) spurred new energy around legislation to prevent members of Congress from trading stocks while in office, with multiple bills introduced in the House and Senate aiming to do just that — albeit with varying degrees of stringency and a lack of clarity regarding who exactly should be targeted.
According to Craig Holman, a lobbyist for the government watchdog group Public Citizen, public frustration with ethical issues — and <a href="https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1491591498185392128?s=20&t=e4DIP3HtPDKzSPad3iDYwQ">widespread public support</a> for a stock trading ban — is likely driving the current push.
“Sometimes we have to embarrass Congress into doing the right thing, and it works once the public gets involved,” he told <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2022/01/congress-stock-trading-ban/621402/">The Atlantic</a> in January.
Congressional leadership is also warming to the issue: Pelosi, in a shift from <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-nancy-pelosi-congress-8685e82eb6d6e5b42413417f3d5d6775">her position late last year</a>, <a href="https://www.axios.com/pelosi-stock-trading-ban-congress-069dc627-71fd-490f-a005-510bbd18cce2.html">appeared to endorse a ban</a> this week, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer offered his own endorsement on the Senate floor.
“This is something that the Senate should address,” <a href="https://www.democrats.senate.gov/news/press-releases/majority-leader-schumer-floor-remarks-on-legislation-to-address-stock-trading-by-members-of-congress">Schumer said</a> on Wednesday. “Hopefully we can act on it soon and hopefully it can be done in a bipartisan way like many of the bills we are looking at this week.”
But while there’s widespread consensus that something has to be done, legislators aren’t yet in agreement about key aspects of an eventual bill, including who the ban should cover and how severe repercussions should be.
Ethics experts say there are <a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/securities-law/why-members-of-congress-should-not-trade-stocks">abundant reasons</a> why lawmakers should be barred from trading individual stocks, but the problem was cast into particularly stark relief by the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Specifically, in early 2020, when many Americans suddenly lost their jobs due to the pandemic (not to mention had to deal with unexpected medical bills and childcare), <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/3/20/21188144/senators-dumping-stock-as-market-tanks">US senators raked in millions after placing fortuitous trades in the stock market</a>.
Loeffler, who lost her seat to Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff last year, reportedly made millions after she and her husband sold some of their interests in January 2020 — and invested in the teleworking company Citrix. The next month, Burr, the former head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, dumped between $628,000 and $1.7 million in stocks — including <a href="https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2020/03/burr-unloaded-stocks-before-coronavirus/">stocks in hotel companies</a> — just weeks before Covid-19 hit the US in full force. And <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/02/us/politics/david-perdue-stock-trades.html">Perdue</a>, a very active trader who also lost his reelection bid in 2021, routinely traded assets of companies that his former Senate committees oversaw.
Loeffler and Burr were both accused of insider trading, which they fiercely denied, and along with Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and James Inhofe (R-OK) were subject to an <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/5/27/21271726/kelly-loeffler-senators-investigation-insider-trading">FBI investigation</a> of their conduct, which ultimately did not result in charges.
That’s not especially surprising — insider trading is hard to prove under normal circumstances, Donald Sherman, senior vice president and chief counsel of Citizens for Responsible Ethics in Washington (CREW), told Vox, and when it comes to members of Congress, he said, “that bar, in practical effect, gets even higher.”
Insider trading, of course, is illegal for everyone and not just members of Congress. As Sherman points out, though, it’s exceedingly hard to prove, and Congress is subject to additional checks on their trading behavior. Those don’t always work either, though: <a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/securities-law/why-members-of-congress-should-not-trade-stocks">According to former chief White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter</a>, the 2012 STOCK Act “confirmed that insider trading laws apply to members of Congress and their spouses; using nonpublic information learned in Congress to trade securities is illegal. But in the nearly 10 years since the STOCK Act’s passage, nobody in Congress has been prosecuted for insider trading based on congressional information.”
Specifically, the STOCK Act requires legislators to file disclosures regarding their trading activity, but members of Congress violate it often. The law is not well enforced, and the punishment for violation is often something like a $200 fine, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-stock-act-violations-senate-house-trading-2021-9">Business Insider’s reporting found</a>.
“Members of Congress just have way too much access to way too much information,” Tyler Gellasch, a former Senate staffer and architect of the STOCK Act, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/02/12/congressional-trading-bans-explained-00008245">told Politico on Saturday</a>.
Momentum is building behind a push to ban stock trading in Congress, but no one clear plan has emerged so far. Despite bipartisan, bicameral consensus on the basic policy, there are multiple different proposals across both chambers of Congress that vary in breadth and enforcement.
One of the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/3494/text?r=2&s=1">most stringent bills</a>, which was introduced <a href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/sens-ossoff-kelly-introduce-bill-banning-stock-trading-by-members-of-congress/">by Ossoff and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ)</a> last month, stipulates that not only legislators, but their spouses and any dependent children, put their stocks and other investment assets into a blind trust managed by an independent party for the duration of their congressional career. The penalty for violating the bill’s requirement would be a fine equivalent to the member’s entire congressional salary, <a href="https://www.ossoff.senate.gov/press-releases/sens-ossoff-kelly-introduce-bill-banning-stock-trading-by-members-of-congress/">according to Ossoff’s office</a>.
“Members of Congress should not be playing the stock market while we make federal policy and have extraordinary access to confidential information,” Ossoff said in a press release announcing the new legislation.
The Ossoff-Kelly bill, which has yet to find a Republican cosponsor in the Senate, is modeled closely on a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/01/16/spanberger-roy-ossoff-insider-trading/">bipartisan bill in the House</a>, which was <a href="https://spanberger.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=3002">first introduced</a> by Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) and Chip Roy (R-TX) in 2020 and <a href="https://spanberger.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=3449">reintroduced</a> last year. That bill — the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/336/text">TRUST in Congress Act</a> — doesn’t cover other asset classes like mutual funds or government bonds like its Senate counterpart does, but would still impose substantial divestment requirements on lawmakers.
“If placing limitations on how we can buy and sell stock makes it so that someone trusts us a bit more — Congress doesn’t have a great approval rating — I think that is a quote-unquote sacrifice we should make to positively affirm we are deserving of that trust, or to positively affirm we are working for the American people and not our pocketbooks,” Spanberger told the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/01/16/spanberger-roy-ossoff-insider-trading/">Washington Post</a> last month.
But Sherman, the CREW chief counsel, says that it’s not enough just to divest from individual stocks, and that other asset classes can be subject to insider knowledge, too. “Individual stocks is the floor,” he told Vox, and putting them in a blind trust “doesn’t do the job.”
In addition to the Ossoff-Kelly or Spanberger-Roy proposals, Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Ben Sasse (R-NE) have each introduced their own proposals; the Hawley bill would take a narrower approach and doesn’t include a ban on dependent children’s portfolios, while Sasse’s bill comes with a hefty penalty — a fine as large $1 million, up to five years in prison, or both. Neither, however, has garnered as much support as the Ossoff-Kelly or Spanberger-Roy proposals.
In the House, there’s also the <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/1579/text?r=62&s=1">Ban Conflicted Trading Act</a>, which was <a href="https://krishnamoorthi.house.gov/media/press-releases/members-congress-introduce-bipartisan-legislation-stop-government-officials">introduced</a> last year by Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and currently has 51 cosponsors in the House, ranging from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
That bill would ban members of Congress and their senior staff from trading individual stocks, but doesn’t have a ban on spouses and dependent children; it’s supported by a number of Democratic senators.
Yet another permutation of a stock trading ban — the bipartisan, bicameral <a href="https://jayapal.house.gov/2022/02/09/jayapal-rosendale-warren-daines-introduce-new-bipartisan-bill-to-ban-members-of-congress-from-owning-and-trading-stocks/">Congressional Stock Ownership Act</a>, which counts Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Steve Daines (R-MT) as cosponsors — does not address dependent children’s holdings, but covers lawmakers and their spouses and would impose a $50,000 fine for violations.
Additionally, <a href="https://porter.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=435">Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)</a> are proposing changes to the 2012 STOCK Act, building on current legislation by banning stock trading, strengthening disclosure requirements, and expanding the offices that the STOCK Act applies to, to include, “members of the federal judiciary and Federal Reserve Bank presidents, vice presidents, and members of the Federal Reserve boards of directors.”
Whatever Congress settles on, Sherman told Vox, “the penalties need to be significant enough that it does have a financial impact” on violators. Financial penalties, he said, “can and should have a chilling effect” on legislators’ motivation to engage in trading — likely even more so than other punitive measures.
None of the bills are perfect, but ethics experts say some are better than others. One particular priority: spouses and children. “A congressional stock trade ban that doesn’t cover spouses is worthless,” <a href="https://twitter.com/waltshaub/status/1492209238986403840">Walter Shaub</a>, the Project on Government Oversight’s senior ethics fellow and former director of the Office on Government Ethics, tweeted Friday.

Sherman agrees: “The exclusion of spouses and dependent children is a giant loophole,” he told Vox.
That loophole is particularly visible in <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-ohio-pennsylvania-mike-kelly-congress-c33b4b4c411c7ec0badc140d20dd4af6">the case of Rep. Mike Kelly</a> (R-PA), whose wife Victoria made thousands of dollars from stock trades, potentially using inside information, in April 2020. Insider trading is already incredibly difficult to prove; insider trading by a spouse would be even more so, despite the fact that it would likely benefit both parties in the marriage.
A ban would also head off the appearance of impropriety, regardless of actual violations. For example, Pelosi herself benefits from the enormous wealth <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/nancy-pelosi-husband-buys-stocks-call-options-salesforce-alphabet-roblox-2022-1">generated by her husband’s stock trading</a>; in July 2021, Paul Pelosi netted $5.3 million from a well-timed transaction, <a href="https://fortune.com/2021/07/08/house-speaker-nancy-pelosi-husband-paul-big-tech-stocks/">according to Fortune</a>, though there’s no evidence of wrongdoing on either or their parts.
<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/02/12/congressional-trading-bans-explained-00008245">As Katy O’Donnell wrote in Politico Saturday</a>, despite the glut of legislation on hand, there are still many unanswered questions regarding what a final bill would look like, and what it could do. While the sentiment of the bills is the same, the specifics are so divergent that it could completely derail the positive movement toward enacting a ban.
Lawmakers, though, have indicated that they’re willing to compromise in pursuit of the larger goal of ending congressional stock trading.
“What we’re trying to do as a group is make sure we don’t lose sight of the central premise of the immediate effort,” <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/593802-stock-ban-faces-steep-hurdles-despite-growing-support?utm_source=thehill&utm_medium=widgets&utm_campaign=es_recommended_content&rl=1">Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR)</a>, a cosponsor of the Krishnamoorthi bill, said Friday. “Now we’re going to have to work to bring everybody into a common effort and make sure that this happens and we don’t get distracted or lost in the field of every possibility.”
Sherman told Vox that he was somewhat encouraged by the outright bipartisan support for such a measure. “With all the ethical reforms that have been met with roadblocks ... this is something that can get across the finish line, and is should get across the finish line,” he said.
Krishnamoorthi has also signaled that he’s willing to compromise on aspects of his proposal, specifically banning members’ spouses from trading. “But,” <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/02/12/congressional-trading-bans-explained-00008245">he said</a> at a press conference Thursday, “right now we want this thing to move.

A court filing by Special Counsel John Durham reveals that a Democrat tech executive spied on President-elect Donald Trump and the Executive Office in the White House on behalf of the Clinton campaign.
Durham filed a motion Friday for U.S. District Court of Washington, D.C. to examine a potential conflict of interest stemming from Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussmann’s own lawyer, who represented Perkins Coie – a law firm tied to the Clinton campaign – in Durham’s probe.
Sussmann was <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/huge-hillary-clinton-linked-lawyer-indicted-in-russiagate-probe/" target="_blank">indicted</a> by Durham in September 2021 for lying to the FBI by providing phony information alleging secret backchannel communications between the Trump campaign and a Russian bank.

“In connection with these efforts, Tech Executive-1 exploited his access to non-public and/or proprietary Internet data. Tech Executive-1 also enlisted the assistance of researchers at a U.S.-based university who were receiving and analyzing large amounts of Internet data in connection with a pending federal government cybersecurity research contract. Tech Executive-1 tasked these researchers to mine Internet data to establish ‘an inference’ and ‘narrative’ tying then-candidate Trump to Russia,” Durham wrote.
“In doing so, Tech Executive-1 indicated that he was seeking to please certain ‘VIPs,’ referring to individuals at LawFirm-1 and the Clinton Campaign.”
“The Government’s evidence at trial will also establish that among the Internet data Tech Executive-1 and his associates exploited was domain name system (‘DNS’) Internet traffic pertaining to (i) a particular healthcare provider, (ii) Trump Tower, (iii) Donald Trump’s Central Park West apartment building, and (iv) the Executive Office of the President of the United States (‘EOP’),” Durham added.
Joffe then turned over his “intel” to Sussmann, who presented the data to the FBI on behalf of the Clinton campaign.

The purpose of the DNS surveillance, Joffe wrote to colleagues in an email, was to craft a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/01/us/politics/trump-alfa-bank-indictment.html" target="_blank">“very useful narrative”</a> alleging ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.
Importantly, the Sussmann indictment from September 2021 noted that Joffe’s “intel” was bogus and a waste of the FBI’s resources.

Sussmann also turned over additional information from Joffe’s spy operation to the CIA in February 2017 alleging that Trump officials were using “rare Russian-made” phones to communicate with Alfa Bank.
That allegation was also found to be bogus:

The Special Counsel’s Office has identified no support for these allegations. Indeed, more complete DNS data that the Special Counsel’s Office obtained from a company that assisted Tech Executive-1 in assembling these allegations reflects that such DNS lookups were far from rare in the United States. 
For example, the more complete data that Tech Executive-1 and his associates gathered – but did not provide to Agency-2 – reflected that between approximately 2014 and 2017, there were a total of more than 3 million lookups of Russian Phone-Provider-1 IP addresses that originated with U.S.-based IP addresses. Fewer than 1,000 of these lookups originated with IP addresses affiliated with Trump Tower. 
In addition, the more complete data assembled by Tech Executive-1 and his associates reflected that DNS lookups involving the EOP and Russian Phone Provider-1 began at least as early 2014 (i.e., during the Obama administration and years before Trump took office) – another fact which the allegations omitted.

This comes after Trump said earlier this week he heard “a lot” of new information is about to come out related to John Durham’s “important” investigation of the Democrats’ Russia collusion hoax.
“He did come up with some really interesting stuff with the lawyers and Sussmann and all of these people, number one, and I hear there’s a lot coming, so I think the jury is out,” Trump <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/justice/trump-raises-john-durham-stakes-i-hear-theres-a-lot-coming" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> of Durham. “We’re going to see what happens, but what he’s doing is one of the most important jobs being done right now in America.”

The big question surrounding 15-year-old Kamila Valieva is whether or not she’ll be allowed to skate in the Olympic women’s individual event.
The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/10/sports/olympics/kamila-valieva-trimetazidine.html">International Testing Agency (ITA) said</a> that Valieva, who helped the Russian women win the team event and became the first woman in history to land a quadruple jump at the Olympics, tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned heart medication that is purported to improve endurance. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/figure-skating-russias-valieva-shows-up-practice-again-beijing-2022-02-11/">Russia</a> wants her to skate, claiming a misunderstanding and perhaps Western jealousy. The ITA and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will attend a hearing on behalf of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to appeal Russia’s decision to let her skate. The International Skating Union (ISU) will determine medals and results <a href="https://ita.sport/news/beijing-2022-the-ita-informs-on-figure-skater-kamila-valieva/">after the hearing,</a> which will happen before Tuesday’s event.
Lost in the shadow of this news, perhaps, are other important questions: how a 15-year-old girl got the medication, and why she would feel like taking it was a good idea.
Valieva, along with her quad-landing teammates Alexandra Trusova and Anna Shcherbakova, all train with coach Eteri Tutberidze. Tutberidze is the single most dominant coach in women’s figure skating, as her girls — most of her skaters become champions before the age of 18 — have taken home Olympic golds and silvers, World Championships, European Championships, and international champions.
But amid all that success, none of Tutberidze’s champions have gone to multiple Olympics. They’ve retired, many citing injury, in four-year windows. Even more distressing is how there seems to be a pattern of abusive practices when it comes to diet restriction and over-training.
When the IOC, ISU, and Russia convene, they’ll decide Valieva’s future. But it would behoove them and the sport to look beyond the athlete in question and also focus on the adults in charge.
Tutberidze’s girls land jumps no other women in the world can do and are some of the most amazing skaters on the planet. But what’s the price they pay to become so?
The unfortunate truth about women’s figure skating is that puberty is seen as the enemy. Smaller, leaner skaters have an advantage because of the physics involved. Lighter skaters have an easier time getting up in the air; having less mass and being narrow allows them to spin faster (think of a pencil, spinning between your fingers). Because puberty tends to add weight, height, and more fat to a woman’s body, it’s not uncommon to see it adversely affect female skaters. We’ve seen that skaters can hit more difficult jumps before they hit puberty, and then lose those jumps as their bodies change. It’s not impossible for female skaters to regain those highly difficult jumps post-puberty, but they remain the exception rather than the norm.
The downside to this, as you might expect in any elite sport, is coaches and athletes will try to physically change athletes’ bodies to keep or obtain those advantages. Hence, women’s figure skating is a sport that’s peppered with athletes who have had <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/archive/ca/entry/figure-skating-eating-disorders_a_23359385">eating disorders</a> like bulimia and anorexia.

And some of those stories have come from Eteri Tutberidze’s former students.
Back in 2014, Yulia Lipnitskaya became one of the Olympic Games’ breakout stars when she won a gold medal at 15. She was known for her spins and incredible flexibility. After Sochi 2014, she had middling results and ended her career in 2017 while suffering from a knee injury. In September of that year, <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/figure-skating/olympic-champ-lipnitskaya-anorexia-1.4285781">she revealed</a> to the Russian press she had been suffering from anorexia for “not just for one year, or two, or three” years and sought treatment at a rehab center in Israel. At the time, there were <a href="https://aleteia.org/2017/12/29/a-troubling-trend-among-olympic-figure-skaters/">reports</a> that Lipnitskaya was encouraged by Tutberidze’s team to sustain herself through “<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2018/2/16/eating-disorders-the-dark-side-of-figure-skating">powdered nutrients</a>” to keep the weight off.
Lipnitskaya never made it to the 2018 Olympics, where Tutberidze’s dynamic duo of Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva shined. Zagitova and Medvedeva combined for the silver in the team event, and then went gold and silver, respectively, in the women’s singles event. At the time, Zagitova was 15 and seemed like an improved version of Lipnitskaya who could land very difficult jumps. She nabbed a gold that year.
After the Olympics, she was asked in an interview with the Russian website, Sport Express, about her growth spurt and puberty. She told them that her and her coaches’ plan to deal with the changes of puberty was to restrict her diet.
“And in terms of puberty, when you become fat — it seems to me that these are all fictions. You just need to shut your mouth and don’t eat! Or at least a little. I eat, but in small quantities,” Zagitova <a href="https://www.sport-express.ru/figure-skating/news/alina-zagitova-pubertat-eto-vydumki-zakryt-rot-i-ne-est-1386749/">said</a>.
Granted, there might be nuances lost in translation. At the time, Zagitova was 15 and may not have chosen her words wisely. But this wasn’t the first time she talked about what sounds like, at best, a very restrictive diet and, at worst, an eating disorder.
In a 2019 interview with Russian Glamour, Zagitova explained that she and team Tutberidze restricted her food intake and that she abstained from drinking water. She essentially used water as a rinse. She <a href="https://deadspin.com/alina-zagitova-says-she-didnt-drink-water-during-the-20-1832459869">said</a>:

No, I don’t like chips. Well, perhaps it’s because I don’t eat them. I like sweets — chocolate, candy. Generally, I restricted myself during the Olympic Games. I was, you can say, not drinking water at all. That is, we just rinsed our mouths and spit it all out.
</blockquote>
In another 2019 interview, <a href="https://olympics.com/en/news/alina-zagitova-technical-artistic-quads-artistry">Zagitova lamented</a> that the game had passed her by, that she was too old (at 19) to hit quads, and that if she had any hope at landing one, she’d need to first lose weight. Zagitova has since retired from the sport.
Medvedeva, who was Zagitova’s main rival, had a career punctuated with back and foot injuries. She left Tutberidze after the Olympics to train in Canada with coach Brian Orser. Orser is known for coaching champions like Yuna Kim and Yuzuru Hanyu.
While in Canada, Medvedeva opened up about how the <a href="https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2018/10/09/yevgenia-medvedeva-on-coaching-change-moving-past-controversy-and-new-outlook-on-figure-skating/">training methods were different</a>, and how Orser’s club did not pit her against her rivals. In a <a href="https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/vaytsekhovskayas-interview-with-medvedeva.105441/">2019 interview</a> with the Russian site RSport, she explained how she had severely restricted her diet and was now working with a nutritionist with Orser. She seems to allude to the same calorie restriction and water weight that Zagitova references:

I understood that I should be as “dry” as possible. I weighed in Pyeongchang one and a half kilograms less than a year before the World Championships in Helsinki. It was a difficult period, but I had no other choice ... I didn’t have too many muscles then, and in this case the body retains water very much. You become heavy and “swollen.” Therefore, everything was really very tough and caused decent damage to the body. Now, fortunately, all these problems are in the past.

Medvedeva returned to Tutberidze in 2020 because of the pandemic. And in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8z00IP-hYc&t=379s">2021 interview</a> with Russian media, Tutberidze said that Medvedeva gained weight and blamed Orser and Medvedeva for her poor scores. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CDTqWNoH-G-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">Tutberidze hasn’t been afraid of lashing</a> out against Medvedeva and other skaters who have left her training academy. Often those skaters, like Medvedeva, return.
“So we did all we could for her under the circumstances,” Tutberidze said. In that same interview, she mentions that she trains her students 12 hours a day.
Medvedeva has since retired, <a href="https://fs-gossips.com/evgenia-medvedeva-i-had-my-first-love-it-ended-ugly-in-a-difficult-moment-right-after-the-olympics-he-told-me-in-plain-text-thank-you-i-dont-need-you-anymore/">citing permanent injuries to her back</a>. She can only turn it one way.
While Lipnitskaya, Zagitova, and Medvedeva are all retired now, the stories alluding to weight restriction and injury among Tutberidze’s current crop of students continue.
In a 2019 interview with <a href="https://youtu.be/S7DnYBFKypk">Russian sports channel Sport24</a>, Daniil Gleikhengauz, who choreographs at Tutberidze’s school, talked about Anna Shcherbakova. Shcherbakova is a favorite to medal this year. The interviewer talks about how she was amazed that Shcherbakova can eat “two shrimps” for dinner and be full.
Again, there could be nuances and humor lost in translation. The host is seemingly joking about Scherbakova’s appetite and willpower. But given Lipnitskaya’s history, Zagitova’s mentality about weight loss, and Medvedeva’s frank answers to the Russian press, the idea that Scherbakova severely restricts her diet doesn’t seem like a joke.
As former Olympic skaters, physicists, and experts explained to me earlier this month, skating is an incredibly taxing sport on the body. Hence the injuries that skaters power through to win. It’s even more terrifying to consider those injuries on the bodies of young girls who are extremely thin, severely restricting their diet, or in a scenario like Lipnitskaya’s, not eating at all.
Trusova and Scherbakova have reportedly been dealing with nagging injuries as they skate. Aliona Kostornaia, who was once seen as a lock for the Olympic team and medal threat, pulled out of the Russian Nationals this year due to an <a href="https://olympics.com/en/news/alena-kostornaia-russian-nationals-2021-injury">unspecified injury</a>. And <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9To1STHs3lY">Daria Usacheva</a>, who is one of Tutberidze’s prized pupils and Russian junior champion, appeared to suffer a very painful and serious injury this past <a href="https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2021/11/12/nhk-trophy-results-figure-skating-short-program/">November</a>. Injuries are usually kept close to the vest in the Russian press.
Amid Valieva’s failed doping test and accounts of what sure seems like disordered eating and careers cut very short due to injury, it raises the question of what skating’s governing bodies are doing about this. The answer seems to be rewarding her.
In 2020, the International Skating Union awarded Tutberidze its “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4wHHGsg8oo">best coach</a>.” And if you’ve been watching NBC’s figure skating coverage, commentator and former skater Johnny Weir has been — up until news of Valieva’s failed doping test broke — talking about spending time at her coaching facility and the splendid time he had getting to know Tutberidze and the girls. Weir posted on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CWU-KdXsTDh/">Instagram</a> in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CWREUlQsU9O/">November</a>, about how thankful he was to visit the school. In hindsight, these decisions haven’t aged well.

“If people start to look under the hood of what’s going on in Team Tutberidze, that might actually be positive for the sport because it would really shine a light on adolescent girls being abused physically, mentally, emotionally. And now pharmacologically, with these drugs,” said Dave Lease, who runs the skating analysis YouTube channel <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZdpUHkQvR0">The Skating Lesson</a>.
While he acknowledges that Tutberidze’s skaters are talented, Lease has been critical of Tutberidze on his show, specifically calling into question her training practices. He has spoken with guests about allegations of eating disorders and possible doping (prior to Valieva’s positive test). He says what’s happening at Tutberidze’s school is analogous to the abuse that happened at US Gymnastics and the Karolyis’ ranch. Saying that Tutberidze’s coaching practices are “abusive” has gotten Lease harangued in the Russian press.
“It doesn’t take a genius to realize that there’s something aberrant taking place with Tutberidze’s training methods as opposed to training methods around the rest of the world,” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tKTKPuqWe8&feature=youtu.be">he said</a>. “I don’t think that any intelligent person who follows figure skating should be surprised. The clues have been there.”
The clues Lease refers to are accounts from former skaters, but also Russian press interviews about diets, the injuries from over-training, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkKWAcuW2H8">interviews with coaches</a> about possible doping, and Russia’s history with state-sponsored doping.
Since the news broke, former skaters like <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamRippon/status/1492113667785211907?s=20&t=kwCn3bVtXqCzQuiyKNDsyQ">Adam Rippon</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CZzClsMA_EX/">Katarina Witt</a> have spoken out about holding Russia and the adults surrounding Valieva responsible. And in an interview with the <a href="https://www.20minutes.fr/sport/jo/3233787-20220211-jo-2022-quoi-ressemble-camp-entrainement-patineuse-russe-kamia-valieva">French newspaper 20 Minutes</a>, top ice dancing coach Romain Haguenauer said the result hadn’t surprised him. He said:

When Valieva’s name came out, I wouldn’t say people weren’t surprised, but let’s say it’s been stuff that’s been around for years. ... To see these kids between the ages of 12 and 15 doing quadruple jumps ... it’s true that there are always questions from the [jumps] specialists. I’m not one, but I know plenty of people who are and all of them have always been extremely surprised that it happened all of a sudden. Before Sochi, Russia did not shine in women’s skating. ... And then, all of a sudden, every year they bring out four new kids rocking quads.

One of the problems surrounding skating is that it goes mainstream once every four years, not unlike gymnastics. Mainstream interest peaks during the Olympics and wanes sharply after, so unless there’s something newsworthy that happens — like Valieva’s failed test — most viewers don’t follow the skaters or Tutberidze enough to know her or her skaters’ history. In Russia where these women are considered top athletes, Lease says, Tutberidze’s success outshines any criticism.
It’s also especially difficult for casual viewers to know about the controversies when you have NBC and commentators like Weir talking glowingly about the academy. For many devout skating fans, though, Tutberidze’s methods have been an open secret for years.
“I know many intelligent people who follow the sport and like to watch the sport, but maybe they aren’t completely immersed. And they prefer to watch skating and see these beautiful young skaters and be amazed and choose to look the other way,” he said. “Or they choose to not know, and not look too far into why they are so amazing.”
