Thousands of maskless demonstrators took to the streets of Melbourne on Saturday to decry the Australian government’s decision to greenlight Covid-19 vaccines for children as young as five.
Despite the rainy weather, the ‘Save Our Children’ protest attracted a huge crowd in the central business district in the capital of the state of Victoria.
People arrived outside the heavily guarded Parliament House to express their outrage over the vaccination of children, which kicks off across Australia on Monday.

Demonstrators carried signs reading: “Leave our children alone,” “Hands off our kids,” and “Stop poisoning our children.”

They then marched from the parliament building to Alexandra Gardens, chanting: “Save our children” and “No more mandates” to the sound of drums.

Almost no one in the crowd was wearing a mask; some protesters even offered free hugs to others.

The rally went on peacefully. Law enforcement said the “highly visible police presence” caused the protesters to refrain from any provocative actions.
The Australian authorities approved Covid shots for those aged five to 11 years old last month, saying the immunization drive will begin on January 10. The children will receive two shots eight weeks apart, and the doses will be one-third of what those over 12 receive.
Health Minister Greg Hunt said Australia has enough vaccines for the 2.3 million children in the age group, despite earlier concerns that there would not be enough. “Three million doses [will be] available over January and two million over the course of the next two weeks,” he said.

Canada To Announce Mandatory Covid Vaccinations Soon

Canadian Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos told the nation on Friday that he believes mandatory vaccinations will be announced soon.
Asked if the government would consider instituting mandatory Covid vaccination laws, Duclos said, “I personally think we will get there at some point. I see it coming personally. Not now. I don’t think we are there yet. But I think discussions need to be had about mandatory vaccinations because we have to get rid of Covid 19.”

He continued, “Our people are tired and the only way as we know through COVID–19, be it this variant or any future variant, is through vaccination.”
This sentence totally contradicts previous comments made by Fiji Public Health Professor Michael Baker, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.msn.com/en-nz/news/world/fiji-faces-large-rise-in-covid-19-deaths-strict-lockdown-needed-baker/ar-AALZdSP" target="_blank">who told the world in October</a> that “you can’t vaccinate your way out of a epidemic that is this intense.”
Highly vaccinated nations such as Israel have all but proven this to be true as they continue to see record numbers of Covid deaths, cases and hospitalizations despite being <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2021/08/20/1029628471/highly-vaccinated-israel-is-seeing-a-dramatic-surge-in-new-covid-cases-heres-why" target="_blank">the first country on Earth</a> to fully vaccinate a majority of its citizens.
The federal health minister noted that the decision to mandate Covid vaccines will be left up to the provinces, saying, “Provinces and territories will continue to take decisions that are within their jurisdiction. As a government, we will continue to do everything we can within our federal authority to keep Canadians safe.”
Canadians lashed out at the idea on Twitter.

How protests in Kazakhstan could become a geopolitical crisis

Days into demonstrations in Kazakhstan, it remains hard to fully grasp what’s happening on the ground.
Peaceful <a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/kazakhstan-fuel-protests-protests/31639462.html">protests</a> began in Zhanaozen, a city in the western corner of Kazakhstan, earlier this week. A rise in <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/1/4/protests-erupt-in-kazakhstan-after-fuel-price-rise">fuel prices</a> in this <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2021/11/kazakhstan-what-happened-in-zhanaozen/">oil-rich city</a> triggered the demonstrations, though it tapped into deeper grievances about the country’s economic and political structure. Across other cities in Kazakhstan, including Almaty, the former capital, citizens flooded the streets in solidarity.
But those peaceful protests have since been overtaken by chaotic and confusing scenes of unrest across Kazakhstan, with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTd3kVpj2Ik">people storming buildings</a> and rioters engaged in <a href="https://www.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20220106-kazakhstan-protesters-killed-in-clashes-with-police-as-crisis-escalates">widespread looting</a> and <a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/vandalism-attack-on-installation-at-kazakhstan-international-art-festival/24600793.html">vandalization</a>. At the request of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Russia <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/01/06/world/kazakhstan-protests">has sent in troops</a> to help tamp down the violence, and Tokayev has since declared he will destroy all <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/07/world/asia/kazakhstan-protests.html">“criminals and murderers.”</a>
A lot remains murky about the circumstances in Kazakhstan, especially who, exactly, is engaging in this rioting, as <a href="https://gizmodo.com/what-really-happened-during-kazakhstan-s-internet-black-1848315477">government-imposed internet blackouts</a> have largely blocked independent and social media. That has allowed President Tokayev to tell one narrative about the protests, and for speculation and theories and rumors to fill in some of the rest. That is a volatile situation, one made even more combustible with the arrival of Russian forces.
“This is stirring a very ugly pot by injecting the Russians into this,” said Jennifer Brick Murtazashvili, associate professor of international affairs at the University of Pittsburgh.
Russia’s intervention could turn Kazakhstan’s internal crisis into a geopolitical one, as Russian President Vladimir Putin <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/06/world/asia/kazakhstan-putin-russia.html">tries to expand his regional influence</a>. But it potentially adds another grievance to the long list Kazakhs already have. Bota Jardemalie, a member of the opposition movement Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan, which was <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2021/07/07/kazakhstan-crackdown-government-critics">designated an extremist group by Kazakhstan’s authoritarian government in 2018</a>, said this could become a two-part struggle. One, still, is the push for democratic and economic reforms. The second may be for sovereignty. “At the same time,” Jardemalie, who has asylum in Belgium, said of Kazakhstan, “now [there’s] this kind of fight for its own independence.”
Not all experts I spoke to believe Russia will, or even wants to, stay in Kazakhstan very long, though it did present a ready-made opportunity to remind the world that Russia is ready to intervene in its sphere of influence. But even a short-lived intervention will likely have consequences for Russia, the regime in Kazakhstan, and the Kazakh people.
“Those people who came out on the streets to peacefully protest and legitimately express their opinions, they’re becoming the playing card in the bigger game,” said Diana Kudaibergenova, assistant professor in political sociology at the University of Cambridge.
The protests broke out in Zhanaozen not long after the region marked the 10-year anniversary of another deadly demonstration. On <a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/zhanaozen-a-year-after-the-riots/24798726.html">December 16, 2011</a>, oil workers in Zhanaozen went on strike to protest wages and working conditions, <a href="https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/odr/they-shot-to-kill-the-massacre-of-kazakhstans-striking-oil-workers-eight-years-on/">an uprising met with brutal force by the Kazakh regime</a>. That massacre showed some of the region’s contentious history with the center, Murtazashvili said. It also marks a decade of somewhat underappreciated pushback against the Kazak regime; <a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/tenge-protest-almaty-police/25265027.html">in 2014</a>, after a currency devaluation; <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-36163103">in 2016</a>, after land reforms; <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48545166">in 2019</a>, after rigged elections the year longtime leader Nursultan Nazarbayev stepped aside so his handpicked successor, Tokayev, could become president.
And now, 2022. On January 2, people began protesting price hikes of liquefied petroleum gas. The cost increase was tied to the end of subsidies, but it meant regular people would pay more to fill up their tanks.
The Central Asian country isn’t exactly wanting for resources, but in Kazakhstan, economic and political power is concentrated in the hands of the very few. Specifically, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/powerful-ex-leader-nazarbayev-is-main-target-kazakhs-anger-2022-01-05/">the hands of the family and close allies</a> of ostensibly former president Nazarbayev, who, though 81, is still largely seen as the real guy in charge. “The outrage was against Nazarbaev, not against Tokayev,” said Assel Tutumlu, an assistant professor of international relations at Near East University. “Because Tokayev is not really a decision-maker, since power still belongs to the old president.”
One of protesters’ chants is <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/01/06/kazakhstan-crisis-timeline/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=wp_world">“Shal, ket!</a>” which is basically: “Old man, go away!”
Gas prices were the trigger, but Kazakhs were frustrated with the economy and a kleptocratic government that benefited while the rest struggled. And then people in other parts of Kazakhstan joined the protests. (Kazakhstan, though geographically vast, is less than about 20 million people.) “In a nutshell, people are tired of the regime,” Kudaibergenova said. “People wanted change. They wanted political reforms, but they wanted to achieve them peacefully; they wanted to be heard.”
As the protests spread, they also became more intense, with people storming government buildings; <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/05/world/europe/kazakhstan-protests-gas-prices.html?action=click&module=RelatedLinks&pgtype=Article">a regional government office of the ruling party was reportedly set ablaze</a>. There was a <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/kazakhstan-president-confirms-takeover-of-almaty-airport/a-60335623">reported takeover of the Almaty airport</a>. Protesters and security forces reportedly clashed, and there have <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-59880166">been reports of about a dozen deaths of security forces, and dozens of deaths and injuries among</a> protesters, though the exact figures are not clear. <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/dozens-killed-in-kazakhstan-as-authorities-crack-down-on-unrest-11641462504">Thousands have also reportedly been detained.</a>
This upheaval coincides with reports of more widespread vandalism — windows broken, cars set on fire — <a href="https://www.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20220106-kazakhstan-protesters-killed-in-clashes-with-police-as-crisis-escalates">along with looting in places like Almaty.</a> But where it gets really confusing is who is doing what. The lack of internet access has left a lot of information gaps. Neither the peaceful protesters nor the rioters are homogeneous groups. The peaceful protests appear to include old-guard opposition leaders, youth leaders, and others demanding reforms and opposing violence. But that is now mixed in with looters and opportunists who may just be taking advantage of the chaos, along with rioters, bandits, and organized gangs, though no one knows where they came from.
Still, the mayhem has allowed Tokayev to group everyone together and claim that <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/kazakhstan-president-shoot-kill-order-protests-violence-rcna11317">“bands of terrorists”</a> are responsible for the unrest. He has insinuated conspiracies: that these are organized groups, aided by foreign training and funding. To deal with them, he sought out some foreign assistance of his own.
President Tokayev requested the aid of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, an alliance of some post-Soviet states — think a much smaller, Russian version of NATO — <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/1/5/kazakhstan-asks-russian-led-alliance-for-help-quelling-protests">“in overcoming this terrorist threat.”</a>
The CSTO responded, almost immediately, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-sends-troops-into-kazakhstan-as-protests-turn-deadly/">deploying as many as 3,000 troops to Kazakhstan, according to local media</a>. Though this is through the CSTO, most of the troops are reportedly Russian, a signal to the region, and beyond, that Putin is ready to intercede to defend what he perceives as Russia’s interests. Russian troops <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/kazakh-president-says-constitutional-order-has-mostly-been-restored-2022-01-07/">reportedly helped secure Almaty airport</a>. Tokayev has said security forces have regained control, though he said Friday that forces should “shoot without warning” to kill. He also thanked Putin for sending over his troops. “He responded to my appeal very promptly and, most importantly, warmly, in a friendly way,” <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/01/07/world/kazakhstans-president-says-security-forces-can-fire-without-warning-quell-unrest/">Tokayev said</a>.
And there may be reason for the warm relations between Putin and Tokayev, as the timing appeared to be good for both of them. Calling in the Russians may have allowed Tokayev to outsource the dirty work of putting down a rebellion.
Tokayev, too, has claimed that these “bandits” were foreign-backed, and framing this as an external threat, also requiring external help, may make it easier to ignore the legitimate grievances that sparked the initial protests. As many pointed out, no one fully understands the protests right now, but this government line is very troubling, and gives them a ready-made justification to clamp down aggressively.
“Regimes like the one in Kazakhstan, they are very clever about that how to survive, about how to stop people from protesting and how to scare them, how to put blame on them,” Jardemalie said.
The timing might have been pretty good for Russia, too. Tensions with the United States and other Western allies are rising <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/12/8/22824015/russia-ukraine-troops-tensons-putin-biden-nato">around the situation in Ukraine</a>. US and Russian officials are supposed <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/28/us/politics/nato-russia-ukrain-us.html">to talk next week about the tensions</a>. Now, Russia comes to the table after a chance to flex its military muscle, even if street unrest isn’t exactly on the level of a full(er)-fledged invasion of Ukraine. It’s at least a little reminder that Moscow is ready to deploy troops, and ready to defend its interests. “It’s going to be a symbolic operation to show all the rest of the people that if you go against your dictator, we’re going to clear you up,” Tutmulu said.
Yet everything comes with caveats. As some experts said, Putin would probably prefer not to deal with sustained unrest in Kazakhstan, in his backyard, especially when he’s got his hands full with plenty of other challenges, like Ukraine. And if Russia’s stay in Almaty goes on well after these protests die down, that could not just bog down the Kremlin but also generate even bigger backlash in Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan has only been independent since 1991, and its relationship with Moscow is always a sensitive subject. Putin has referred to Kazakhstan as an <a href="https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/how-kazakhstan-could-shift-putins-calculus-on-ukraine/">“artificial state,”</a> and experts said the longer Russia stays, the greater the risk of a potential backlash, and maybe even more violence.
Which means Russia’s intervention comes with a catch for Tokayev, too. He was already a weak president — even the people protesting him think someone else is running the show — and having to run to Russia for help may not convince anyone that he has full control of the government. Tokayev reshuffled his cabinet this week, and removed Nazarbaev from h<a href="https://twitter.com/Peter__Leonard/status/1478713218474336257?s=20">is post on the national security council</a>, possibly in an effort <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/05/kazakh-president-removes-ex-leader-from-post-amid-worst-unrest-in-a-decade.html">to appease the protesters and maybe shield Nazarbaev</a>. But Tokayev’s quick call to Russia is raising questions about the stability of his regime, and where he might stand in any internal power struggles.
Kazakhstan, too, has tried to play a delicate balancing act by trying to have it all ways — be nice to Moscow, and to Beijing, and to Washington, in the hopes of not getting caught between the superpower squabbles. In asking Russia for help, Tokayev might have tipped the scales a bit, at least when it comes to the US and Russia. “It would seem to me that the Kazakh authorities and government certainly have the capacity to deal appropriately with protests, to do so in a way that respects the rights of protesters while maintaining law and order. So it’s not clear why they feel the need for any outside assistance, so we’re trying to learn more about it,” <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/kazakh-president-says-constitutional-order-has-mostly-been-restored-2022-01-07/">Secretary of State Antony Blinken</a> said Friday.
But all of this leaves the people of Kazakhstan, who do have very real grievances, still trying to understand the events of this week, and what it means for their future. Tokayev had promised some reforms, and some experts thought maybe, once the violence ends, Tokayev might make some concessions. Or the opposite may happen: He could clamp down even harder, launching an even greater crackdown on those fighting for democratic or economic change.

“The Science Isn’t Strong Enough”: British Health Minister Schooled by UK Physician on Covid Jabs

Cameras were rolling during an incredible exchange between British Health Secretary Sajid Javid and a savvy, unvaccinated UK healthcare worker, who educated the unelected bureaucrat on everything from the benefits of natural immunity, to the dangers of a never-ending booster scheme.
The one-sided debate took place during a visit Friday by Javid to Kings College Hospital in London, where he asked nurses what they thought about the government’s mandatory vaccination policy for healthcare workers.
Steve James, an anesthesiologist working in the hospital’s Covid Intensive Care Unit, spoke up to Javid about why he disagreed with the NHS policy, and explained he hasn’t been vaccinated because his natural immunity is better than that provided by so-called Covid vaccines.

“I’m not happy about that,” James told the health secretary.
“So, I’ve had COVID at some point, I’ve got antibodies, and I’ve been working on COVID ICU since the beginning,” the ICU doctor stated.
“I have not had a vaccination, I do not want to have a vaccination. The vaccines are reducing transmission only for about eight weeks for Delta, with Omicron it’s probably less,” James said, speaking to the jabs’ reported waning efficacy.
“And for that, I would be dismissed if I don’t have a vaccine? The science isn’t strong enough,” James said.
Javid responded, “I respect that, but there’s also many different views. I understand it, and obviously we have to weigh all that up for both health and social care, and there will always be a debate about it.”
James fired back, saying he’d sooner advise unvaccinated people not to get the jab so they can enjoy the benefits of natural immunity, rather than suffer monthly booster jabs.

Another clip of the exchange begins with James remarking, “…If you haven’t had the vaccination, to not get it, because the protection I’ve got from transmission is equivalent to somebody who’s vaccinated.”
“Yes,” the health secretary replied, adding, “but at some point that will wane as well.”
“But if you want to provide protection with a booster, you’d have to inject everybody every month,” James pointed out. “If the protection’s worn off from transmission after two months, then after a month you still have a bit of protection – but if you want to maintain protection, you’re going to need to boost all staff members every single month, which you’re not going to do.”
Clearly taken aback, Javid mumbled, “Yeah we…we take advice on when, how much you may, or may not…”
“But, it’s not going to achieve practical benefits,” James added.
Speaking with the UK <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/sajid-javid-health-secretary-king-s-college-hospital-london-nhs-b975551.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Evening Standard</a> following the conversation, James said he hoped the health minister heard his concerns.
“I wouldn’t say he agreed with me,” he said. “I had the feeling he was listening.”
The Standard added: “Mr James told the PA news agency he did not believe Covid-19 was causing ‘very significant problems’ for young people, adding that his patients in the ICU had been ‘extremely overweight’ with multiple other co-morbidities.”

Why the Left Cannot Let Go of Jan 6

“Every Day Is Jan. 6 Now.”
That was the headline over the editorial of 1,000 words in The New York Times of Sunday last.
On first read, I thought the Times was conceding its obsession and describing its mission. For the editorial began by bewailing yet anew the “horrifying” event, “the very real bloodshed of that awful day,” the “once-unthinkable trauma.”
Still, a year later, said the Times, “the Republic faces an existential threat,” as the “Capitol riot … continues in statehouses across the country, in a bloodless, legalized form that no police officer can arrest and that no prosecutor can try in court.”
“We should stop underestimating the threat facing the country. … (our) democracy … is in grave danger.”
What the Times is saying is that the electoral reforms being enacted democratically in red states — requiring voter IDs, for example, and subject to judicial review — are a Republican continuation of the Capitol riot.
Why cannot our liberal media let it go? Why does the distortion and hysteria about Jan. 6 seem to grow with each retelling?
Now, undeniably, as I wrote in a column the next morning, Jan. 6 was “The Worst of Days for Trump & Trumpists.”

“The worst of the day’s events for Trump came when a segment of a friendly crowd of 50,000 he just addressed concluded its march down the Mall to the U.S. Capitol by smashing its way into the building and invading and occupying the Senate and House chambers.
“Members of Congress were forced to flee and hide. A protester, an Air Force veteran, was shot to death by a Capitol cop. Vice President Mike Pence, who was chairing the joint session, was taken into protective custody by his Secret Service detail. Doors were broken open. Windows were smashed, and the building was trashed …
“What Americans watched was a mob occupation and desecration of the temple of the American Republic.” I added, “And the event will be forever exploited to discredit not only Trump but the movement he led and the achievements of his presidency.”
That last line understated what an obsession Jan. 6 has become for the nation’s establishment and media elite.
The left cannot let go of Jan. 6. Indeed, it has fixated upon, exploited and exaggerated the riot to discredit and destroy the Trump presidency in the history books and to prevent Donald Trump from ever running or being elected president again.
Though Trump was exonerated by the Senate of the impeachment charge brought by Nancy Pelosi’s House, the House select committee wants to try Trump again and again in the court of public opinion and wants President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice to find some crime with which to charge and convict him.
There are other reasons the left cannot let go of Jan. 6.
Democrats have no other issue on which to run this November.
The Biden presidency has produced an uninterrupted string of disasters: the Afghanistan withdrawal debacle, the Texas border crisis, inflation, an explosion of gun violence and murders setting records in Democrat-run cities, failure to produce an adequate federal response to the delta and omicron waves of COVID-19.
Again, Jan. 6 was a riot, involving assaults on Washington and Capitol cops and the disruption of a formal congressional procedure to validate the electoral vote victory of Joe Biden.
But was Jan. 6 really the planned coup, the terrorism, the sedition, the armed insurrection, the attempt to overthrow the U.S. government?
Was Jan. 6 really comparable to Pearl Harbor and 9/11, during each of which 3,000 Americans went to their deaths in an hour’s time and major wars followed — as Vice President Kamala Harris said yesterday?
If so, why, a year after Jan. 6, 2021, has no one been charged with inciting a rebellion, sedition, treason, armed insurrection, plotting a coup, or a takeover of the government of the United States?
Thus far, all the charges prosecuted and punished are consistent with a riot, which is what Jan. 6 was. Comparisons of this three-hour mob action to Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are almost sacrilegious.
Was that QAnon shaman occupying the chair in the Senate chamber really the moral equivalent of Mohamed Atta ramming an airliner into the World Trade Center or Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto plotting the Dec. 7 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor?
Another reason for the left to paint up the horror of that day is that the perpetrators of Jan. 6 were not the radical left who battled cops and burned and looted Seattle, Portland, Milwaukee and scores of other cities in the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing.
They were the “deplorables” of Trump, the populists of the American right, against whom any slander is justified.
Question: If the left is so terrified of Trump it feels it must prevent him from even running again, by imposing a criminal conviction, what does that say about the left’s belief in American democracy?
What does that tell us about the left’s trust in the people?
