Federal Judge Blocks Biden’s Vaccine Mandate for Children’s Education Program

A Louisiana federal judge blocked Joe Biden’s vaccine mandate for teachers in Head Start early education programs.
U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.alabamaag.gov/Documents/news/Head%20Start%20Mandate%20Stay%20Order.pdf" target="_blank">ruled</a> Saturday that the Biden administration unconstitutionally bypassed Congress when ordering workers in Head Start programs to take the injection by Jan. 31, and for students 2 years or older to be masked indoors and outdoors.
“If the Executive branch is allowed to usurp the power of the Legislative branch to make laws, then this country is no longer a democracy — it is a monarchy,” Doughty wrote.
“This two-year pandemic has fatigued the entire country. However, this is not an excuse to forego the separation of powers,” Doughty, an appointee of then-President Donald Trump, continued. “If the walls of separation fall, the system of checks and balances created by the founders of this country will be destroyed.”
“In the words of Thomas Paine, ‘Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.’ Common Sense (1776). This issue will certainly be decided by a higher court than this one. This issue is important. The separation of powers has never been so thin,” he concluded.
The ruling applies to a lawsuit from 24 states: Louisiana, Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall praised the ruling in a news release, calling Biden’s effort to mask children “nonsensical and damaging.”
“This victory will help ensure that numerous Head Start programs will continue to operate rather than have to fire teachers and cut back services to children,” Marshall <a href="https://www.alabamaag.gov/newsviewer/2aec81f2-75fb-4b11-9375-f5c6b829d7f4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wrote</a>. “And this win will forestall the nonsensical and damaging practice of forcing masks on two-year-olds.”

Separately, a Texas judge issued a similar <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/healthcare/judge-blocks-mask-and-vaccine-mandate-for-childrens-program-in-texas" target="_blank">ruling</a> for the Head Start program in the Lone Star State on Friday, calling Biden’s mandate “arbitrary and capricious.”
The judgement comes after a series of <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2021/12/20/supreme-court-now-weighing-multiple-lawsuits-against-bidens-vaccine-mandate/?sh=57cd6ba618fa" target="_blank">major legal defeats</a> for Biden in his crusade to impose vaccines on all Americans, which will be soon taken up by the Supreme Court.

Liberal comedian and actor Patton Oswalt penned a lengthy apology to fans after posting photos of himself with colleague Dave Chappelle, who’s been attacked by the cancel culture over his unfiltered brand of comedy.
In an Instagram post last week, the anti-Trump B-list celebrity acknowledged being asked to perform a guest set with Chappelle, who Oswalt referred to as a “genius” and a “real friend.”

“Finished me set at @mccawhall [McCaw Hall] and got a text from @davechappelle,” Oswalt wrote. “Come over to the arena he’s performing in next door and do a guest set. Why not? I waved good-bye to this hell-year with a genius I started comedy with 34 years ago.”
Oswalt went on to praise Chappelle, who was attacked and “canceled” by the censorship mob over alleged anti-trans jokes made in recent Netflix specials.
Oswalt’s celebration, however, was short-lived as the very next day he posted an update distancing himself from Chappelle’s purported viewpoints and profusely apologizing for offending the LGBTQ community.

Oswalt said despite being friends with Chappelle for over 30 years, “we also 100% disagree about transgender rights and representation.”
“I support trans peoples’ rights — ANYONE’S rights — to live safely in the world as their fullest selves,” he said, misconstruing Chappelle’s views on natural biology and free speech. “For all the things he’s helped ME evolve on, I’ll always disagree with where he stands NOW on transgender issues.”
Oswalt went on to say he’s “hopeful” Chappelle’s not “done evolving, learning,” and that he can’t simply “cut off” their friendship like he’s done with others “who had views with which I couldn’t agree, or changed in ways I couldn’t live with.”

“I’m sorry, truly sorry, that I didn’t consider the hurt this would cause. Or the DEPTH of that hurt,” Oswalt wrote, admitting he’d deleted numerous comments in the post he wished would have been a “nice comment thread.”
The former “King of Queens” co-star’s prostration is a perfect example of how the entertainment industry is increasingly beholden to the corporate-sponsored LGBTQ mob and is subject to their rules on free speech and freedom of association – a point Chappelle was trying to make with his special.
Following the outrage over his Netflix special, “The Closer,” Chappelle reportedly <a href="https://www.infowars.com/posts/i-said-what-i-said-chapelle-refuses-to-apologize-to-triggered-trans-activists/">refused to apologize to offended trans activists</a>, instead saying his special was more about promoting free speech and shedding light on how “corporate interests” control “what I can say and what I cannot say.”

Astronomers Find Mysterious Dusty Object Orbiting A Star

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, TESS, was launched in 2018 with the goal of discovering small planets around the sun’s nearest neighbor stars.
TESS has so far discovered 172 confirmed exoplanets and compiled a list of 4703 candidate exoplanets.
Its sensitive camera takes images that span a huge field of view, more than twice the area of the constellation of Orion, and TESS has also assembled a TESS Input Catalog (TIC) with over 1 billion objects.
Follow-up studies of TIC objects have found they result from stellar pulsations, shocks from supernovae, disintegrating planets, gravitational self-lensed binary stars, eclipsing triple star systems, disk occultations, and more.
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) astronomer Karen Collins was a member of a large team that discovered the mysterious variable object TIC 400799224.
They searched the Catalog using machine-learning-based computational tools developed from the observed behaviors of hundreds of thousands of known variable objects; the method has previously found disintegrating planets and bodies that are emitting dust, for example.
The unusual source TIC 400799224 was spotted serendipitously because of its rapid drop in brightness, by nearly 25% in just a few four hours, followed by several sharp brightness variations that could each be interpreted as an eclipse.
The astronomers studied TIC 400799224 with a variety of facilities including some that have been mapping the sky for longer than TESS has been operating.

They found that the object is probably a binary star system, and that one of the stars pulsates with a 19.77 day period, probably from an orbiting body that periodically emits clouds of dust that occult the star.
But while the periodicity is strict, the dust occultations of the star are erratic in their shapes, depths, and durations, and are detectable (at least from the ground) only about one-third of the time or less.
The nature of the orbiting body itself is puzzling because the quantity of dust emitted is large; if it were produced by the disintegration of an object like the asteroid Ceres in our solar system, it would survive only about eight thousand years before disappearing.
Yet remarkably, over the six years that this object has been observed, the periodicity has remained strict and the object emitting the <a href="https://phys.org/tags/dust/">dust</a> apparently has remained intact.
The team plans to continue monitoring the object and to incorporate historical observations of the sky to try to determine its variations over many decades.

Inflation or Recession? The Fed Faces a Choice

On December 15, the Federal Reserve announced numerous quantitative tightening measures that have the intended goal of combating the rising inflation that has been bogging down the American economy.
As of November 2021, the rate of inflation has reached 6.8 percent, the highest since 1982, and is unlikely to have peaked yet.
Despite Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell originally proclaiming this inflation spiral to be <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/why-fed-chair-powell-still-thinks-high-inflation-is-temporary-2021-08-27/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transitory</a>, the Federal Reserve has announced that they will end their bond buying program three months earlier than expected, in addition to speculating three interest rate hikes in the coming years as opposed to the originally planned single rate hike.
With the <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Kac5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantitative easing policy</a> maintained throughout the covid-19-induced recession finally ending, the <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20211215b.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">federal funds rate is expected to rise</a> to 0.9 percent in 2022, 1.6 percent in 2023, 2.1 percent in 2024, and 2.5 percent in the undetermined long run. Mortgage-backed security and bond purchases will be reduced by <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/newsevents/pressreleases/monetary20211215a.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$10 billion and $20 billion a month</a>, respectively, in order to expedite the conclusion of the program by March 2022, rather than June. While this course of action is likely to mitigate the soaring inflation, it may lead to a myriad of detrimental effects to other facets of the economy.
To start, the aforementioned contractionary monetary policies will presumably slow GDP growth, wage growth, and possibly even job creation over the course of their implementation. Following the announcement of these measures, the Federal Reserve <a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/files/fomcprojtabl20211215.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adjusted its real GDP forecasts</a>, lowering its 2023 estimate by 0.3 percent. To add to this, wage growth is likely to slow as well, both as a result of a slowed economy and inflationary pressures being assuaged. Additionally, unemployment was predicted to perk up in 2022 in comparison to its previous valuations.
Furthermore, a rise in the federal funds rate will undisputedly lead to a rise in net interest payments made by the government. In fiscal year 2020, the United States federal government spent <a href="https://www.cbo.gov/publication/56910" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$345 billion</a> in net interest payments alone, despite near-zero interest rates. The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget found that even a 2 percent increase in interest rates would cause net interest payments to rise to a whopping <a href="https://www.crfb.org/papers/how-high-are-federal-interest-payments?utm_source=pocket_mylist" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$750 billion</a>, and as mentioned above, by 2024 the federal funds rate is expected to increase by exactly 2 percent. It should also be noted that this study was conducted in March 2021, prior to the passage of the American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, which was then followed up with a stark increase in interest rates on newly issued Treasury bills, all of which will cause the $750 billion projection to be an underestimate.
What’s more, interest rate hikes will most certainly have strong effects on many Americans’ fiscal behavior. The upcoming interest rate increases will <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=KacO" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pull the prime rate up</a>, thus furthering the burden of credit card holders paying interest. It would be in the best interest of consumers to pay off their debts in a timely manner in order to avoid further economic strain later on. We should also anticipate a rise in fixed mortgage rates, increasing the cost of taking out loans on the purchase of property as well. While fixed mortgage rates and interest rates don’t have a perfect positive correlation, since 2004 there has been a <a href="https://binghamton-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/sgundap2_binghamton_edu/EWCsqRbEC7BIubzR-qJxm_8BWzc-37aEqQ6DNCMiqdnvmQ?e=AqxC62" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">~0.74 correlation coefficient</a>, meaning they are still very closely correlated.
On top of that, car loan rates are also likely to increase, which may worsen already tense conditions for those looking to purchase a vehicle. Similar to fixed mortgage loans, there is not a perfect positive correlation between interest rates and car loan rates. However, a strong relationship is still maintained, shown by a <a href="https://binghamton-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/sgundap2_binghamton_edu/EZp1i9AmtwFIq90GshTcHn8BrxUw44rIURFDr1FHq0W1Uw?e=aBvndN" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">correlation coefficient of ~0.73</a>. Used car prices have reached <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=K9ij" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">all-time highs in 2021</a>, and following the disbursement of stimulus checks, consumption <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=K9dn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expenditures on durable goods starkly dropped</a>. Buying a vehicle is arguably more difficult than ever, and higher loan rates on cars may discourage such purchases even more.

A testing requirement may be added to last week's move by the US to shorten the isolation period for some people who test positive for Covid-19, Anthony Fauci said.
The US Centers for Disease Control is considering adding a negative test to recommendations on a shortened isolation period for people with asymptomatic infections, President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser said on ABC's "This Week."
That could make having easy access to tests a flashpoint at a time many Americans are struggling to obtain them.
Last week, US health officials cut the recommended isolation time to five days from 10 after after a positive test. Fauci acknowledged "pushback" to the shortened span without any further test that might indicate if a person is still infected.
"We're going to be hearing more about that in the next day or so from the CDC," he said on ABC.
On CNN, Fauci said the omicron variant now sweeping the US may cause milder illness for most, but the sheer number of cases is likely to cause serious sickness in many unvaccinated Americans, and strain health-care resources. "This is a much, much more transmissible virus than Delta is," he said.
Hospital admissions from Covid are rising again in the US, and average daily infections are at a record 400,000, Fauci said.
Several states have mobilized their National Guards to help provide medical care amid staffing shortages and, like Texas, asked for federal help.
Studies in the UK have shown that the omicron strain appears less severe than the delta variant it supplanted. South Africa, where the new variant was identified in November, said last week the omicron-driven wave appears to have passed its peak without a notable rise in deaths.
Almost 73 per cent of US adults are fully vaccinated, and 36.3 per cent have received a booster shot, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But coverage varies widely between states.
School Strategies
Fauci said that despite omicron's rapid spread, schools should remain open, though with masking and other rules, and he urged parents to get eligible children vaccinated.
Mitigation strategies including masking and vaccines are working in schools, which should remain open if possible, US Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said Sunday.
"Our default should be in-person learning," Cardona said on CBS's "Face the Nation," citing the benefits of classroom education over virtual learning.

Israel will start offering a fourth dose of the coronavirus vaccine to people aged 60 and over, becoming the first country in the world to widely disseminate the extra jab to fight off the omicron strain.
The fourth dose will also be made available to medical staff who had their last jab at least four months ago, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a press conference on Sunday. Last week, Israel approved the extra shot for people who are immunocompromised, as well as residents of nursing homes and patients in geriatric wards.
New daily cases, which topped 5,000 last week in the country of 9.5 million, are expected to quadruple by the end of the week, Bennett said. The caseload could reach as many as 50,000 cases a day, he said, or nearly five times the previous peak. Critical cases remain well below previous records but have started to creep up over the past week.
"We must keep our eye on the ball, and act swiftly and decisively if we want to continue engaging and working with the country open as much as possible throughout this pandemic," Bennett said.
Israel's vaccination campaigns have been ahead of the curve, with the country the first to inoculate the majority of its population and the most aggressive in administering booster shots last year. Bennett last month announced a plan to immunize everyone 60 and over, but implementation was held up because of pushback by some expert advisers. And some advisers say even without the data, Israel should take action because the variant is so contagious.
