Melbourne:
Thousands of protesters decrying COVID-19 vaccinations gathered in cities around Australia Saturday as smaller counter-rallies supporting health measures also marched.
Australia's vaccine program remains voluntary and highly successful, with nearly 85 percent of the population over 16 fully vaccinated and life returning to relative normality for those double-jabbed.
But protesters rallied Saturday across several of Australia's major cities against vaccine mandates, which are not universal and have only been applied to certain occupations by state authorities.
In Melbourne, a crowd of several thousand called for state leader Daniel Andrews to be jailed and voiced anger over controversial new proposed pandemic powers.
Police said up to 10,000 gathered in Sydney, where one protester dressed as Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace from the film "Braveheart" and another spoke to the crowd in costume as former US President Donald Trump.
There were no reports of clashes, nor was there any sign of the gallows or calls to hang political leaders which had been filmed at earlier Melbourne protests -- sparking concerns the rallies were encouraging violence.
Although the views of the crowd in Sydney were wide-ranging, a heavy presence of anti-vaccination and shadowy conspiratorial views were promoted by speakers and on many signs.
"In Australia where a fanatical cult runs our health bureaucracies, they say it's ok (to vaccinate children)," right-wing federal politician Craig Kelly told the Sydney crowd to large cheers.
Kelly, who is a crossbench MP in Canberra, has routinely promoted misinformation and conspiracy theories throughout the pandemic.
Around 2,000 protesters also gathered in Melbourne to oppose the anti-vaccination rally -- one of the first counter-demonstrations since the pandemic began.
"I'm here because I am disgusted by what's going on the streets of my city, Melbourne," counter-protester Maureen Hill told AFP, referring to the anti-vaccination march.
"Everything that's been done (by the public health orders) has been done to save lives. I mean, it did upset people, and it did affect a lot of people, but it's a worldwide pandemic. What else are we supposed to do?" Hill said.
Australia has recorded over 195,000 cases and 1,933 deaths linked to the virus in a population of over 25 million since the pandemic began.

Tehran:
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Saturday they had seized a boat smuggling diesel in the Gulf and arrested its 11 foreign crew members.
"Thanks to our intelligence services and in a coordinated operation, our navy seized a foreign vessel with 11 crew members in our territorial waters," said Guards' Colonel Ahmad Hajian, according to state television's Iribnews website.
Hajian did not specify either the date of the seizure, the nationality of the boat or its crew, or further details about the vessel and its origin.
"After the inspection, more than 150,000 litres of contraband diesel were seized and the 11 foreign crew members were brought before a court," he added.
The incident comes in the wake of a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the sea lanes serving the Gulf, where a large portion of the world's oil is produced and shipped.
On November 10, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the release of the Vietnamese-flagged MV Sothys tanker which they had seized in October in the Sea of Oman.
The latest incident comes as the Islamic republic is preparing to resume talks with major powers aimed at ending a standoff over its nuclear deal.

Beijing:
China's market regulator on Saturday said it was fining companies including Alibaba, Baidu and JD.com for failing to declare 43 deals that date as far back as 2012 to authorities, saying that they violated anti-monopoly legislation.
Enterprises involved in the cases would be fined 500,000 yuan ($78,000) each, it said, the maximum under China's 2008 Anti-Monopoly Law.
Alibaba, Baidu, JD.com and Geely did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
China has been tightening its grip on internet platforms, reversing a once laissez-faire approach and citing the risk of abusing market power to stifle competition, misuse of consumers' data and violation of consumer rights.
The earliest deal listed was a 2012 acquisition involving Baidu and a partner, and the most recent was the 2021 agreement between Baidu and Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holdings to create a new-energy vehicle company.
Other deals cited by the State Administration of Market Supervision included Alibaba's 2014 acquisition of Chinese digital mapping and navigation firm AutoNavi and its 2018 purchase of a 44% stake in Ele.me to become the food delivery service's largest shareholder.
The deals, however, did not have the effect of eliminating or restricting competition, the regulator said.
In December last year, it fined Alibaba, Tencent-backed China Literature and Shenzhen Hive Box 500,000 yuan each for not reporting past deals properly for antitrust reviews, the first time it had ever done so.

Montreal:
Officials in flood-stricken western Canada announced travel and fuel restrictions Friday as the region grapples with supply difficulties, the latest on a list of struggles caused by torrential rains.
Record rainfall hit southwestern British Columbia Sunday and Monday resulting in landslides and flooding which destroyed roads and infrastructure and forced the temporary closure of the Trans Mountain pipeline.
"We are asking people to limit their fuel consumption and vehicle travel at this time and are putting in place orders under the provincial state of emergency to support this," Mike Farnworth, the province's public safety minister, said at a press conference.
Individuals will no longer be able to buy more than 30 liters (eight gallons) of fuel when going to the pump.
"We are asking people not to travel through severely affected areas- for their own well-being, but also to make sure the fuel we do have goes toward the services people need in this time of crisis," Farnworth said.
"These steps will keep commercial traffic moving, stabilize our supply chains and make sure everyone gets home safely," he added.
Authorities are still searching for four missing people in the Pemberton region, where a woman's body was discovered this week by relief workers.
The army, which has been mobilized since Wednesday, is working in several areas of the province to clear roads and build a new levee in the town of Abbotsford, which was partially submerged and could be subject to further rain forecast for next week.
Some 60 soldiers arrived in the city on Thursday.
"Pretty much every army base in the country is standing by to be ready to deploy if they have to," Pamela Hogan, a public affairs officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, told AFP.
"Canadian Armed Forces members will be assisting the civilian engineers that are in charge of the dike building," she said.
Heavy rains are expected again in the area next week.
In the course of months Canada's Pacific coast has suffered repeat natural disasters, including extreme summer heat at the end of June which experts attributed to climate change, followed by major wildfires.

Rotterdam:
Dutch police fired warning shots, injuring several people, after rioters against a partial Covid lockdown torched a police car and hurled stones in Rotterdam on Friday.
Chaos broke out after a protest in the port city against the coronavirus restrictions and government plans to restrict access for unvaccinated people to some venues.
Dozens of people were arrested and seven people were injured in total, including police officers, during the nighttime rampage on one of Rotterdam's main shopping streets.
The Netherlands went back into Western Europe's first partial lockdown of the winter last Saturday with at least three weeks of curbs on restaurants, shops and sports.
Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb described the riots as an "orgy of violence".
"The police have felt the need to draw a police weapon in the end to defend themselves," he told reporters.
Police said in a statement that the demonstration that started on the Coolsingel street "has resulted in riots. Fires have been set in several places. Fireworks were set off and police fired several warning shots."
"There are injuries related to the fired shots," they added. They did not give a number but public broadcaster NOS said two people were hurt.
Dutch media said several hundred protesters shouted slogans including "freedom", then threw stones at police and firefighters and set fire to several electric scooters.
'Very serious situation'
The situation had largely calmed later but the smoking wreckage of a burned-out police car and dozens of smashed bicycles littered the scene, an AFP reporter said.
Riot police carrying shields and batons were directing groups of people away from the area. Officers on horseback and in police vans patrolled the streets.
Police also cordoned off several scenes to comb for evidence, with a human finger visible on the ground at one of them, the AFP correspondent said.
"Most of the demonstrators are now gone. There only remain a few groups in a few places," police spokesman Jesse Brobbel told AFP.
Dutch police said units from around the country were brought in to "restore order" to Rotterdam.
"Dozens of arrests have now been made, it is expected that more arrests will follow. Around seven people have been injured, including on the side of the police," a police statement said.
Rotterdam authorities issued an emergency order banning people from gathering in the area "to maintain public order", while its main railway station was closed.
"This is a very serious situation which requires action with the highest priority," said the emergency order by the Rotterdam municipality.
Tensions will now be high ahead of planned demonstrations in Amsterdam and the southern city of Breda on Saturday. Local media say thousands of people are expected to attend.
Record infections
Like much of the rest of Europe, the Netherlands has seen Covid cases soar to record levels in recent days, with more than 21,000 new infections reported on Friday.
The latest restrictions were announced on November 12, and sparked clashes between demonstrators and police outside the justice ministry in The Hague.
In January the Netherlands suffered its worst riots in four decades, including in Rotterdam, after a night-time Covid curfew came into force.
But the most controversial measure could be yet to come.
The Dutch government is considering excluding the unvaccinated from bars and restaurants -- the so-called 2G option -- limiting admittance to people who have been vaccinated or who have recovered from the disease.
However there was significant opposition to the plan during a debate in parliament this week.
Similar measures have already been taken in neighbouring Germany, while Austria initially did so but has now gone into full lockdown.
Earlier Friday the Dutch government outlawed traditional fireworks over New Year for a second year in a row "to prevent an extra burden on care workers," the government said.

Two confusing questions about Covid-19 boosters, answered

The big Covid topic on everyone’s minds is boosters.
On Friday morning, the FDA <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/19/us/politics/coronavirus-boosters-fda.html">authorized</a> Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna booster shots for all adults ages 18 and up. And later in the day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) followed suit.
The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/11/19/cdc-advisers-pfizer-moderna-booster-shots-adults/">CDC said</a> that every adult who is at least six months removed from their last shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines can get a booster shot. And it recommended that people over the age of 50 make sure they do so.
The long-awaited decision comes after months in which the boundaries of who can get a booster have been widening. The Biden administration first <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?514148-1/president-biden-remarks-booster-shots">announced</a> its plans to make boosters widely available in August. Since then, we’ve seen the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/booster-shot.html">rollout of boosters</a> to Pfizer and Moderna recipients <a href="https://www.vox.com/coronavirus-covid19/2021/9/24/22691355/covid-booster-shot-cdc-fda-pfizer-approval">over age 65, and those who are 18 or older who are immunocompromised</a> or at high risk of infection. All adult Johnson & Johnson one-dose recipients have also been approved for second shots two months after their first.
The fact is, the federal government has been lagging on this front. Several states have already gotten ahead of the federal government by approving boosters for adults: Colorado, California, New Mexico, and Arkansas, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/11/16/booster-vaccine-eligibility-states/">among others</a>, have all moved in the last few weeks to declare nearly all adults eligible. And based on anecdotal accounts, even adults not eligible yet have been able to get a booster shot.
That has left people anticipating official federal guidance that anyone who wants a booster can get one — and it has also <a href="https://www.vox.com/22770682/covid-19-vaccine-booster-shots-policy-goal">fostered confusion</a> over what exactly the US’s public health game plan is, and whether getting the booster is the right personal choice for any given person.
Those <a href="https://www.vox.com/22770682/covid-19-vaccine-booster-shots-policy-goal">questions</a> will only loom larger now, with the expanded booster eligibility. Here’s how to help you think through the situation.
Personally, this describes my situation — and I’m getting one.
If you got two shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, as I did, you’re already fairly well-protected from severe Covid-19 outcomes. The main thing a booster does is make you less likely to get infected and (mildly) sick — but that’s still good to have.
We have a lot more data on these vaccines than we did when they were first approved. We know that they generally <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/11/11/science/vaccine-waning-immunity.html">remain very effective against severe illness and death even a year</a> after someone gets two shots. But they do wane in effectiveness against infection. Six months after your second dose, the vaccine is less protective against catching Covid-19 and, perhaps, virus spread.
That’s because antibody levels in the blood decline over time. Experts <a href="https://www.vox.com/22770682/covid-19-vaccine-booster-shots-policy-goal">disagree on how much people should worry about that</a>. Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told me that a healthy, functioning immune system gradually prunes blood antibodies for infections the body hasn’t encountered, and it doesn’t mean you won’t fight off Covid-19 just fine (likely suffering only mild, maybe even unnoticeable illness, if you do catch it).
There’s a fair debate to be had about whether preventing infection, if illness is likely to be mild, is all that important as a public health priority. But even though I won’t get all that sick if I get Covid-19 because I’m fully vaccinated, I prefer not to get it at all. The booster does reduce my risk of becoming infected with Covid-19 — period. For me, that’s sufficient to take a booster, especially given that I didn’t have bad side effects from the first two shots.
This lukewarm recommendation becomes a much stronger one for older adults and others at elevated risk from Covid-19. If your immune system functions less well or you work in a high-risk setting, then a booster shot might be needed just to get your immune system to the level of readiness that other people were at after two shots. That’s well worth it.
And if you got <a href="https://www.vox.com/22770682/covid-19-vaccine-booster-shots-policy-goal">Johnson & Johnson</a>, you should definitely get a booster (which the CDC had already approved) to combat some waning in vaccine efficacy for the one-dose shot.
A lot of Covid-19 questions are complicated, but here’s one thing we can be fairly sure of: Your booster shot, if you choose to get one, is very likely not directly coming at the expense of other people, experts told me.
The concern stems from the fact that many people in the US will be getting their third shot when about <a href="https://www.vox.com/22759707/covid-19-vaccine-gap-covax-rich-poor-countries-boosters">half of the world hasn’t had even one shot</a>. That’s not just an injustice and a humanitarian wrong, it’s also strategically foolish: <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/22598415/covid-vaccinate-world-virus-variant-delta-lambda">Virus variants can develop more easily</a> when Covid-19 cases are high, and vaccines are the most effective way to lower them.
If skipping a booster would get that shot to someone in a poor country instead, I’d prefer to do that.
But that’s not really how vaccine allocation works. Many months <a href="https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-and-biontech-announce-agreement-us-government-600">ago,</a> the US placed orders with Moderna and Pfizer for millions of doses of their vaccines. Other countries and international organizations did the same.
Those orders, experts told me, are being fulfilled in the order they were placed — so if Moderna is committed to delivering 20 million doses to the US first, then 10 million to France next, that’s the order they will send them. And if the US orders additional doses now in response to increased demand from booster-getters like us, that request will be at the back of the queue.
Not getting your booster won’t get that shot to people in other countries who need them more. What might help, Amanda Glassman, senior fellow at the Center for Global Development, told me, is queue-swapping: the US formally ceding its place in line to other countries that need it more or to <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/22440986/covax-challenges-covid-19-vaccines-global-inequity">Covax, the international alliance to vaccinate the world</a>.
<a href="https://www.unicef.org/coronavirus/donate-doses-now">Unicef has called on the US and other rich countries to do just that.</a> The US also could — and should — donate excess doses (it has donated roughly <a href="https://www.vox.com/22759707/covid-19-vaccine-gap-covax-rich-poor-countries-boosters">200 million of them</a> so far), but it’s unclear how demand for boosters this fall and winter will affect the odds of new donations of excess doses in the future; the US plans to fulfill its remaining unfulfilled pledges of <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2021/09/22/biden-raise-world-vaccine-pledge-more-than-1-1-billion-doses/5803965001/">donating more than a billion doses</a> through <a href="https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/tracking-u-s-covid-19-vaccine-donations/">purchase orders for Covax currently in the queue</a>.
If you’re frustrated, like I am, that millions of vaccines are going unused in the US while they’re badly needed elsewhere, you should absolutely push for the US to give up its place in line. But skipping a booster shot won’t change how many doses Moderna or Pfizer will deliver to the US before they move on to the next country on their list.
And within the US, we have <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/oct/16/us-throws-out-millions-doses-covid-vaccine-world-shortages">plenty of supply of mRNA vaccines</a> at this point — so getting a booster isn’t taking one from your neighbors either.
The confusion surrounding boosters is in some ways an outgrowth of messy communications from the public health establishment. It likely explains the markedly different response to boosters than to the initial wave of vaccines.
Conversations about boosters have been tinged with ambivalence and uncertainty. In the early days when the vaccines first started rolling out to the larger population, my family and friends drove for hours to land our Covid-19 vaccines. I hate long car rides, but I spent the whole time actively excited. There’s a bit less of that feeling this time (but don’t tell that to our 5-year-old, who was so inspired she declared she’ll invent an immortality shot when she grows up).
“We’ve miscommunicated this,” Offit told me. He argues that the adults dying of Covid-19 are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html">almost all people who are unvaccinated</a> or those at much-elevated risk, and the back-and-forth on boosters for healthy people has ended up leaving people confused. Many people who are already very safe from serious infection or death have ended up with the impression they’re at risk, while people who actually are at risk — largely those who are unvaccinated — have ended up with the impression the vaccines don’t really help.
And after a year in which much messaging emphasized resource scarcity — that we <a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/public-health/clear-your-patients-confusion-about-which-masks-work-best">shouldn’t wear N-95 masks lest we take them from doctors and nurses,</a> that we shouldn’t <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2021/02/06/964139633/is-it-ever-ok-to-jump-ahead-in-the-vaccine-line">skip our place in the initial vaccine line</a> lest we get a vaccine someone else needed more — there’s been little effort to answer people who wonder, reasonably, if getting a booster takes one from someone who needs it more.
The FDA and CDC announcements on expanding booster eligibility should hopefully clarify some of the confusion out there. And the science on booster shots will continue to evolve — as we learn more, it should inform our public policies and individual decision-making.
In the meantime, it’s okay to go ahead and grab a booster to increase your protection.
