A group of women subjected to invasive gynaecological searches at Doha airport will sue Qatari authorities, seeking redress for an ordeal that sparked global condemnation, their lawyer told AFP Monday.
Women on 10 Qatar Airways flights from Doha, including 13 Australians, were subjected to the examinations late last year as authorities searched for the mother of a newborn found abandoned in an airport bathroom.
The incident caused outrage, and fuelled concerns about Qatar's treatment of women as the Gulf state prepares to receive thousands of foreign visitors for the 2022 football World Cup.
Damian Sturzaker, from Sydney-based firm Marque Lawyers, said seven affected passengers now plan legal action to "send a message to Qatari authorities that you can't treat women... in this manner".
"The group of women have suffered enormous distress on the evening concerned, now just over a year ago, and they continue to suffer distress and ill effects and trauma as a result of what occurred," he told AFP.
Sturzaker said the women were seeking a formal apology, compensation, and protection for future passengers transiting through the airport.
Qatar is an ultra-conservative Muslim monarchy, where sex and childbirth outside of marriage are punishable by jail.
Ahead of the World Cup, the country has struggled to reassure critics that its promises on women's rights, labour relations and democracy are credible.
Facing potentially devastating commercial and reputational damage after the incident, Qatar vowed to guarantee the future "safety and security" of passengers.
The country's prime minister also issued an apology, while an airport police officer who oversaw the searches was reportedly convicted.
But Sturzaker said the women had not been made aware of any improvements to airport procedures and their attempts to seek mediation had been unsuccessful.
They now wanted to highlight their case ahead of the FIFA tournament, to ensure other travellers were well-informed before visiting Qatar, he added.
"They should be aware that -- whilst there is a guise of a highly developed, highly modernised airport and national carrier -- these events have happened and there's nothing preventing them from happening again," he said.
Qatar's embassy in Canberra and Qatar Airways did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Sturzaker said the lawsuit would be filed in Australia against the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, Hamad International Airport, Qatar Airways and the country's government within weeks.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday hailed a global accord to speed up action against climate change as "truly historic" and "the beginning of the end for coal power".
But he said his "delight at this progress" at the UN COP26 summit in Glasgow was "tinged with disappointment" because of a failure to secure the agreement of all countries to phase out hydrocarbons.
Nearly 200 nations on Saturday signed a global deal to try to halt runaway global warming after two weeks of painful negotiations but fell short of what scientists say is needed to contain dangerous rises.
India and China weakened the final summit decision text in the final straight, insisting language was changed from "phase out" coal to "phase down", forcing Britain's COP26 president Alok Sharma to apologise and say the Asian giants needed to explain their decision.
"Those for whom climate change is already a matter of life and death, who can only stand by as their islands are submerged, their farmland turned to desert, their homes battered by storms, they demanded a high level of ambition from this summit," said Johnson.
"While many of us were willing to go there, that wasn't true of everybody," he added, without naming India and China. "Sadly that's the nature of diplomacy.
"We can lobby, we can cajole, we can encourage, but we cannot force sovereign nations to do what they do not wish to do.
"It's ultimately their decision to make and they must stand by it."
An upbeat Johnson elsewhere told a news conference the agreement had managed to "turn the dial down" to warming of "around two degrees" Celsius -- still failing to meet a 2015 Paris Agreement pledge to limit warming to 1.5-2.0C.
"But for all our disagreement, the world is undeniably heading in the right direction," he said, insisting the goal of 1.5C was "still alive".
Work was now needed to hold countries to account on their pledges, he added.
"COP26 has shown that we can do this, we can end our reliance on coal and fossil fuels. We can put the brakes on runaway climate change, and we can preserve our unique planet for generations to come," he said.

A McDonald's restaurant in Brazil was on Sunday ordered to comply with health regulations by installing separate male and female toilets after sparking a controversy with its unisex bathroom.
The scandal erupted over a viral video shot from inside the unisex toilet of a McDonald's restaurant in Bauru, in Sao Paulo state.
In the video, a woman who appears to have shot the clip can be heard complaining: "This is absurd! Children use these bathrooms. This is communism in our city of Bauru, it's shameful!"
The video caused such a storm that health officials visited the restaurant and "found that the municipality's health regulations had not been respected," Bauru mayor Suellen Roim said on Twitter.
According to a local law, bathrooms must be "separated and identified, one for each sex."
McDonald's has been given two weeks to comply with the regulation or face either a fine or the restaurant's closure.
The company explained in a statement that it was trying to create areas of "inclusion and respect" so that "everyone feels welcome to use" the bathrooms.
The fast food chain said it was cooperating with authorities to "meet certain standards."
But the issue riled up the ire of conservatives in a country where questions about gender have become a hot topic since far-right President Jair Bolsonaro -- often accused of sexism and homophobia -- took power three years ago.

Beirut, Lebanon:
The ISIS group on Sunday claimed responsibility for a bomb attack on a minibus in the Afghan capital Kabul that killed a journalist and wounded four others.
The attack happened on Saturday in Kabul's Dasht-e-Barchi suburb, an area dominated by members of the mostly Shiite Hazara community, which for years has been the target of violence by IS.
ISIS-Khorasan, the local branch of the terrorist group, claimed the attack in a statement on its Telegram channels.
Hamid Seighani, a well-known Afghan journalist who worked for the Ariana News television network, died in the blast.
ISIS-K boasted it had killed and injured "20 Shiite apostates" including a journalist, saying it had placed bombs on buses.
Since the Taliban returned to power on August 15, dozens of bombs have been set off in eastern Nangarhar province -- a hotbed of IS activity -- but Kabul has largely escaped such violence.
However, ISIS members on November 2 raided the city's National Military Hospital, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 50 others.
