Denmark on Friday proposed to fast-track legislation allowing workplaces to mandate a digital "corona pass" for employees in its latest measure to curb a third wave of infections.
Earlier in the week, the government <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/denmark-re-introduces-health-pass-after-sharp-rise-in-covid-19-cases-2603739" target="_self">ordered Danes to present a pass</a> when they visit indoor bars, restaurants and other public places. Usually shown by a phone app, the pass verifies that the holder is vaccinated, has tested negative or has recently recovered from infection.
Under the proposed new legislation - agreed on Friday in principle between the government, unions and employer associations - bosses can decide to mandate workers to show passes though the employers will not be obliged to do that.
If the agreement comes into law as expected next week, Denmark will join a growing number of countries taking similar measures.
"We have made an agreement, which can provide greater security in the workplace and hopefully help Denmark get through the winter as well as possible," interim business minister Mattias Tesfaye said in a statement.
"We are doing this for the sake of the Danish economy and to keep the jobs going."
Daily infections in Denmark have risen steadily to between 2,000 and 3,000 in recent days from a low of just over 200 in mid-September. The rate of positive tests has also more than doubled in the past weeks to 2.5 per cent in early November.

British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca said Friday it has begun to sell its Covid vaccine at a profit as the company posted a third quarter loss on higher costs.
AstraZeneca, which has sold its vaccine at cost during the pandemic in contrast to rivals including US giant Pfizer, said it expects "to progressively transition... to modest profitability as new orders are received" in the current fourth quarter and beyond.
AstraZeneca posted a net loss of $1.65 billion (1.44 billion euros) for the third quarter compared with a profit after tax of around $650 million in the July-September period last year, a statement said.
AstraZeneca said it experienced higher costs in the current third quarter following its $39-billion takeover of US biotech company Alexion, as well as increased research and development expenses across multiple programmes, including its Covid treatments.
Last month, the drugs company revealed positive results from a trial of a treatment for Covid-19 symptoms, which is being produced alongside its vaccine.
Made from a combination of two antibodies, the AZD7442 treatment had been undergoing final clinical trials to assess its safety and efficacy.
AstraZeneca said the limited profit contribution from the Covid vaccine in the current fourth quarter "is expected to offset costs relating to" AZD7442.
Chief executive Pascal Soriot told a conference call with reporters Friday that AstraZeneca had always planned to stop selling its Covid vaccine at cost.
But he stressed that the company wants "the vaccine to remain affordable".
The group added that revenue from its Covid vaccine, developed with the University of Oxford, totalled $2.22 billion in the year to date following delivery of around 580 million doses worldwide.
Mr Soriot said the company had "saved millions of hospitalisations" thanks to being the world's second largest provider of Covid vaccines after Pfizer.
Soaring sales
The drugs giant said total group revenue soared 50 per cent in the third quarter to almost $9.9 billion.
"AstraZeneca's scientific leadership continues to provide strong revenue growth and exceptional pipeline delivery... including our long-acting antibody combination showing promise in both prevention and treatment of Covid-19," Mr Soriot said in the earnings statement.
"The addition of Alexion furthers our commitment to bring transformative therapies to patients around the world, and I am proud of our colleagues' ongoing dedication and focus."
The group completed its mega takeover of Alexion earlier this year.
Since taking the helm at AstraZeneca in 2012, Mr Soriot has pushed the company into lucrative treatments such as cancer therapies, and the Alexion takeover gives it more heft in areas such as treating blood disorders.

Kabul:
An explosion hit a mosque in the Spin Ghar district of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan, wounding at least 12 people including the imam of the mosque, local residents said.
Atal Shinwari, a resident of the area, said the blast occurred at around 1.30 pm when explosives apparently located in the interior of the mosque detonated.
A Taliban official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the blast and said casualties were feared but gave no further details.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the apparent attack, the latest in a series of blasts to hit mosques in Afghanistan over recent weeks, undermining the Taliban claim to have restored security after decades of war.
The mosque was attended by Sunni Muslims. Previous attacks since the Taliban takeover have struck Shi'ite mosques and have been claimed by the Sunni terrorist group ISIS.
Accounts of casualties varied. Shinwari said at least 12 people had been wounded, including the imam of the mosque. Another resident said 15 people had been hurt, three seriously.

South Korean engineer Kim Gwang-ho was almost certain he would receive ample compensation from the whistleblower program of the US auto safety regulator for a tip-off about safety lapses at Hyundai Motor Co, his employer of 26 years.
Now, at the end of a five-year ordeal, the award from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has made Kim more than $24 million richer, and he aims to set up a foundation to promote responsible corporate culture.
"The compensation I expected from the whistleblower program in the United States outweighed the sacrifice I had to make in South Korea," Kim, 59, who worked on the firm's quality strategy team, told Reuters on Friday.
Kim's action led to an agreement last year by Hyundai and its affiliate, Kia, which are among the world's top 10 automakers by sales, to pay a record civil penalty of $210 million.
Kim, who plans to set up a YouTube channel to teach people how to expose their employers' bad behaviour, learned about the US law through training that Hyundai provided, and which inspired him to come forward, he said in an interview.
"(The amount) is not incredible or anything like that, I'd say it's about right," Kim said in the living-room of his home in the city of Yongin, south of Seoul, the capital.
"It's the right amount when you look at what I had to sacrifice, how much I had to work on this," added Kim, who said his action cost him his job and severed ties with long-time colleagues.
Hyundai Motor Group did not have comment.
BIGGEST WORLDWIDE
Tuesday's reward was the first by the US regulator and the biggest in a whistleblower case in the automobile sector worldwide, says law firm Constantine Cannon, which represented Kim.
It comes as the regulator and US transport authorities ready regulations for a programme for whistleblowers in the automotive sector that Congress created in 2015.
The regulator's whistleblower program aims to help it police the automotive industry by rewarding providers of information about safety violations. Successful whistleblowers get a share ranging from 10 per cent to 30 per cent of the fines or penalties collected.
The amount of Kim's award recommended by the regulator is 30 per cent of an upfront payment of $81 million agreed by Hyundai and Kia.
"I was relieved to hear that it finally came to an end," he said, adding that he and his law firm were checking if he stood to receive more.
In the summer of 2016, Kim told the US regulator Hyundai was not taking enough action to resolve an engine fault that increased the risk of crashes, citing an internal report from the strategy team to management.
Investigation by the regulator begun in 2017 led to its decision that the firms had failed to recall the vehicles in a timely fashion, bringing last year's $210-million penalty.
In 2018, Reuters reported that US prosecutors were investigating whether Hyundai's vehicle recalls were done properly.
Today, Kim feels his effort was not entirely successful, however.
"Those who tried to cover up recalls at that time are still working as executives at affiliates of Hyundai Motor Group, which I think is the painful reality even after I managed to successfully blow the whistle to correct things," he said.
