The BIRD Group Is Coming Under Increasing Censorship and Censorship Kills

Nor that it was ramped up after World Ivermectin Day on 24 July 2021.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Regarding the broadcasting of World Ivermectin Day, YouTube said content about ivermectin for the prevention or treatment of Covid was not supported by health authorities around the world, and thus they cannot host discussions held about ivermectin on their platform. But, “they can’t ban our science-based, decentralised, bottom-up, citizen-driven movement supporting ivermectin. And they can’t stop you from talking to your doctor about ivermectin,” the <a href="https://worldivermectinday.org/">World Ivermectin Day website</a> states.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">On IICC Day 2, Professor Matjiaz Zwitter gave an incredible talk on the ethical problems surrounding ivermectin as a treatment for Covid, the censorship surrounding ivermectin and the negative promotion coming from health authorities such as the FDA and WHO.  Prof. Zwitter is the head of the Department of Medical Ethics and Law at the Universtity of Maribor, Slovenia. You can watch Prof. Zwitter’s 28-minute talk <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDMd42GOaXk">HERE</a>.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Dr. Tess Lawrie, a medical doctor, researcher and director of Evidence-Based Medicine Consultancy Ltd, closed the IICC with a powerful speech.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">“The story of ivermectin has highlighted that we are at a remarkable juncture in medical history where: rigorous scientific evidence; our training and experience; the tools that we use to heal; and, our connection with our patients are being systematically undermined by relentless disinformation stemming from corporate greed.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">“The story of ivermectin shows that we, as the public, have misplaced our trust in the authorities and have underestimated the extent to which money and power corrupts.  Had ivermectin been employed in 2020 – when medical colleagues around the world first alerted the authorities to its efficacy – millions of lives could have been saved and the pandemic, with all of the associated suffering and loss, brought to a rapid and timely end,” Dr. Lawrie said.</p> <figure class="wp-block-video aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress"> <figcaption>IICC conference end – Dr Lawrie’s Speech, 25 April 2021 (7 mins)</figcaption> </figure> <p>You can watch all IICC videos <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcCrBQZqQ1FTZ60WnC6JjDA/videos">HERE</a>.</p> <h3><strong>The Deadly Censorship of Ivermectin</strong></h3> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Censorship is actually a form of disinformation, which is defined as “information given to hide the actual truth.”</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Kyle Warner, a mountain bike champion, suffered a reaction so severe after his second Pfizer injection in June that, as of October, he was still spending days in bed, easily overwhelmed by too much mental or physical exertion.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">He <a href="https://theexpose.uk/2021/11/10/vaccine-injured-champion-mountain-biker-testifies-the-drug-companies-need-to-compensate-us-if-theyre-going-to-be-testing-on-us/">shared his detailed experience with John Campbell</a>, a retired nurse and teacher, during which he explained that before being diagnosed with pericarditis, POTS and reactive arthritis, a doctor told Warner that he was having a “psychotic episode” as Warner had suggested his reaction was from the Covid injection.  The health care practitioners thought he was imagining things or “trying to be anti-vaxx or a conspiracy theorist.”</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Warner has experimented with a number of therapies that he believes have helped including ivermectin, pine needle tea, star anise and black seed oil. Warner explained that he understood <a href="https://principia-scientific.com/breakthrough-ivermectin-inhibits-covid-spike-protein-binding/">ivermectin bound to the spike protein</a> from the Covid injections which is why it alleviates his symptoms.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Around the time Warner was first experiencing severe adverse reactions to his Covid injection, Bret Weinstein, host of <a href="https://player.fm/series/bret-weinstein-darkhorse-podcast">DarkHorse Podcast</a>, tweeted, “The censorship campaign obscuring ivermectin (as prophylactic against SARS-CoV2 and as treatment for COVID-19) kills.”</p> <figure class="wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"></figure> <p class="has-text-align-justify">YouTube had deleted two of Weinstein’s videos: one <a href="https://www.lewrockwell.com/2021/07/joseph-mercola/the-deadly-censorship-of-ivermectin/">with Dr. Pierre Kory</a> and the other with Dr. Robert Malone. Why? Because they discussed science showing ivermectin works against Covid-19 and the hazards of experimental Covid gene therapy injections. Never mind the fact that Kory and Malone are the widely recognized leading experts in their fields.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify"><a href="https://www.joerogan.com/">Joe Rogan</a>, comedian and podcast host, invited Weinstein and Kory in for an “emergency podcast” about the censorship of ivermectin in the wake of the targeted takedown.  Weinstein told Rogan that YouTube demonetised his channels, removed some of his videos and issued warnings for content that mentioned ivermectin, labelling it “spam” and “deceptive medical information.”  But ivermectin is an effective antiparasitic drug that’s been given to 4 billion people worldwide and the World Health Organization considers ivermectin an essential medicine that’s safe for kids, Weinstein said.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">When Joe Rogan revealed, at the beginning of September, he had treated his bout of Covid with ivermectin and other remedies — fully recovering within three days — corporate media reported Rogan had taken “ivermectin, a deworming veterinary drug that is formulated for use in cows and horses,” adding that “the Food and Drug Administration is urging people to stop ingesting” the medication, saying animal doses of the drug can cause nausea, vomiting and in some cases severe hepatitis.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Highlighting a clip from the Joe Rogan’s “emergency podcast,” Russell Brand questioned why information on ivermectin is so politicised.  He said he has no opinion on how Covid should be treated and isn’t qualified to offer advice — but he does have an opinion on how the media reports on certain issues and what biases are at play.</p> <p>The media’s <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/roberthart/2021/09/02/internet-vigilantes-are-fighting-ivermectin-misinformation-with-memes-and-explicit-horse-cartoons/?sh=b635614215df">reporting</a> on the treatments Rogan used — which included <a href="https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/covid-ivermectin-could-have-saved-millions-lives/">ivermectin</a>, vitamin C and <a href="https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/rfk-jr-podcast-dr-ryan-cole-pathologist-early-treatment-keydelta-variant/">monoclonal antibodies</a> — was “deeply cynical,” said Brand.</p> <figure class="wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"> <p><span class="embed-youtube">[embedded content]</span></p> <figcaption>Russell Brand: Joe Rogan and Ivermectin, Should Covid Be Politicised? 8 September 2021 (9 mins)</figcaption> </figure> <h3><strong>Who Orchestrated the Attack on Ivermectin?</strong></h3> <p class="has-text-align-justify">According to <a href="http://vigiaccess.org/">VigiAccess</a>, the World Health Organization’s drug tracker, a total of 20 deaths have been linked to ivermectin since 1992. There’s absolutely no reason whatsoever to disparage ivermectin as a “horse dewormer” that only a loony person would consider taking. Yet that’s what corporate media has done, virtually without exception.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">While corporate media are certainly at fault for spreading disinformation here, they got the idea from a supposedly reputable source — the FDA.  In <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/aug/23/fda-horse-message-ivermectin-covid-coronavirus">a tweet</a> on 21 August 2021, the FDA linked to an agency article warning against the use of ivermectin, saying “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.”  This blatantly misleading post seeded the lie that then spread across corporate media.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">In <a href="https://rescue.substack.com/p/horse-bleep-how-4-calls-on-animal">an article posted on RESCUE</a>, two independent investigative health journalists, detailed how the FDA’s anti-ivermectin campaign began.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">“The FDA tweet arrived just as ivermectin prescriptions were soaring, up twenty-four-fold in August from before the pandemic,” RESCUE reported. The day after the RESCUE article was published <a href="https://rescue.substack.com/p/a-day-after-our-investigative-reporter">one of its authors was locked out</a> of her twitter account.</p> <p class="has-text-align-justify">Why is ivermectin being censored? Why don’t governments and health officials want people to feel confident that there’s treatment out there and that Covid is not the death sentence they’ve been led to believe it is? The short answer is because ivermectin threatens the Covid injection program. Woman Left Wheelchair-Bound With Neurological Damage Hours After Pfizer Vaccine Dose

<div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img alt="State Health Secretary-designate talks about the start of ..." height="463" loading="lazy" src="https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi1.wp.com%2Fs3.amazonaws.com%2Fs3.nmpoliticalreport.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F12%2F15154425%2Fshutterstock_1767084407-scaled.jpg%3Ffit%3D1200%252C800%26ssl%3D1&f=1&nofb=1" width="695" /></figure> </div> <p><strong>A 42-year-old mother of two shared that she <a data-id="https://www.realnotrare.com/" data-type="URL" href="https://www.realnotrare.com/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">experienced confusion and leg paralysis just hours after receiving a Covid-19 vaccine dose</a>, and has been suffering severe neurological issues ever since.</strong></p> <p>During a <a data-id="https://rumble.com/embed/vm0bem/?pub=4" data-type="URL" href="https://rumble.com/embed/vm0bem/?pub=4" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Real Not Rare</a> rally for vaccine choice outside the steps of the Supreme Court on Tuesday, wheelchair-bound Mona Hasegawa said that she received a dose of the Pfizer vaccine because she wanted to “do [her] part to help the community stop COVID,” and in order to see her father in hospital who is a dialysis patient.</p> <figure class="wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-wp-embed is-provider-rumble-com wp-block-embed-rumble-com"></figure> <p>Mona <a data-id="https://www.realnotrare.com/realstories" data-type="URL" href="https://www.realnotrare.com/realstories">shared her st</a><a data-id="https://www.realnotrare.com/realstories" data-type="URL" href="https://www.realnotrare.com/realstories" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">or</a><a data-id="https://www.realnotrare.com/realstories" data-type="URL" href="https://www.realnotrare.com/realstories">y online</a>, writing: “My father who lives in Canada is at high risk and I thought the best thing to do was to get vaccinated due to the fact that the media and medical professionals were saying it was safe and effective. To my knowledge at the time, the only side effects were flu-like symptoms.”</p> <p>She received her “first and only” Pfizer dose on 24th April. Within hours, while at a local restaurant, Hasegawa said that she began to feel confused and unable to move her legs. her daughter had to hold her hand to help her leave the restaurant.</p> <p>“I went home the next couple of days and had flu-like symptoms, but I also experienced extreme pain in my back, hips and thigh area. Even though I was feeling like this, I still pushed myself to continue my days in a normal fashion,” Mona said.</p> <p>She wrote that the Saturday following her jab she experienced memory issues, brain fog, seizures, pain in her head, back pain, shaking issues and twitches.</p> <p>According to Mona, she is seeking help as she has been repeatedly ignored by doctors. She had been in the hospital several times, undergone scans and even a spinal tap in hopes of understanding what has happened to her.</p> <p>Hasegawa said that she has “had at least 30 visits with doctors and specialists over a six-month span of time.”</p> <p>“When I tell doctors that I think I got this from my COVID vaccination, they tell me it’s psychological, they send me home,” she explained at the rally.</p> <p>She also added that at one point after she left hospital, she wasn’t prepared not to be able to walk, so she crawled on her hands and knees up the stairs to enter her home.</p> <p>“My daughters had to wrap me in a bed sheet to drag me to get to where I need to go, because I couldn’t walk and I didn’t have a wheelchair or walker at the time,” she recounted.</p> <p>“I’m just asking for there to be more research done before anybody’s vaccinated and before the kids are vaccinated. Because if I’m having a hard time dealing with this physically and mentally, how are the kids gonna deal with this?”</p> <p>Following her vaccine injury incident, Mona is now part of a support group for those who have had similar experiences with the covid jab. She said: “there are thousands of people that are suffering. A lot of the people in the group are very suicidal right now.”</p> <p><strong>“And so I’m trying to speak up for all of the people that have lost their lives. US Children’s Hospitals Now Overwhelmed with Infant Cardiac Patients

<div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img alt="Study provides insight on how to build a better flu ..." height="507" loading="lazy" src="https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fmedicine.wustl.edu%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2FGettyImages-1266490076_forweb.jpg&f=1&nofb=1" width="761" /></figure> </div> <p><strong>Investigative reporter Steve Kirsch has <a data-id="https://stevekirsch.substack.com/p/how-are-they-going-to-explain-all" data-type="URL" href="https://stevekirsch.substack.com/p/how-are-they-going-to-explain-all" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">written</a> <a href="https://stevekirsch.substack.com/p/how-are-they-going-to-explain-all" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">an article</a> stating that children’s hospitals across the United States are filling up with newborn babies that have serious cardiac issues, all because their mothers received the Covid-19 vaccine.</strong></p> <p>An email Kirsch received claims that one hospital’s three NICUs (neonatal ICUs) are all completely full of newborn patients. All of the babies are from mothers who are fully vaccinated, a nurse confirmed from their records, though hospital staff are not allowed to ask directly about the vaccination status of the mothers.</p> <p>The email stated: “Because this is a third- or fourth-hand rumour, I would ordinarily try to confirm it before sharing with anyone.</p> <p>“But my initial Internet searches came up empty, and I worry that this is the sort of thing that might be effectively suppressed for quite a while by those in control of our largest hospitals – especially the ones currently busy firing doctors and nurses who refuse vaccination.”</p> <p>Considering that the US is around 9 months into the vaccination programme began, it seems that the world is only just seeing the impact of the jabs on babies born to vaccinated mothers.</p> <p>The email went on to state: “I was wondering whether it might be worth sharing with some of the Unity Project’s scientific/medical advisor doctors who may have contacts ‘on the inside’ of large hospitals with NICUs, so long as they could be trusted to discretely investigate without risking their or our credibility by outing the story prior to confirmation.</p> <p>“If this rumour could be confirmed and revealed, it could potentially, by itself, turn the tide of this war.”</p> <p>In his article, Kirsch asked for doctors to get in touch, read his work and comment on the letter’s claims, either to challenge or confirm them. In response, hundreds of people got in touch and shared their experiences.</p> <p>One person said that they have seen several articles published recently confirming that ICUs are “jam-packed” with sick and dying patients, many of whom are forced to sit in hallways due to there being no more beds available.</p> <p>This person added: “Rooms are full of patients with NON-COVID symptoms, i.e., they aren’t there because of covid. The suspected cause is secondary effects of the vaccine.</p> <p>“The question here is how many of these patients will soon be infants? The media and the medical community will not step up and tell you this. It will come from the fed-up grassroots of us who are more fearful of this government than of COVID.”</p> <p>Another person wrote about how it has been “clearly established” that the rate of spontaneous abortions has skyrocketed since the vaccines started being administered to pregnant women.</p> <p>“My daughter-in-law, who is unvaccinated and just delivered, was told by her doctor to not get the vaccine during her pregnancy because her last three patients all had miscarriages right after receiving it,” this person explained.</p> <p>“I think Mr. Kirsch has provided notable caveats to the sourcing until better confirmed, but anyone following COVID vaccine research isn’t at all surprised. It will be confirmed.”</p> <p>Other people questioned the email that Kirsch, wondering whether it is legitimate, suggesting it could be “poisoned bait” from “controlled opposition.” Whilst this could be possible, there does appear to be an uptake in infant and newborn hospitalisations now that the Covid vaccines are being widely administered.</p> <p><strong>“It’s not just about the newborns with cardiac problems,” noted another about how older children are also being damaged by the jabs. “How many times do we need to see young people getting mysterious heart attacks at the same time before Why it’s not quite time to panic about inflation

The United States <a href="https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/22576069/inflation-1970s-volcker-powell-federal-reserve">isn’t experiencing</a> 1970s-level spiraling inflation, but for people leaving the grocery store or a restaurant, the receipt is often a little bit higher than it used to be.</p> <p>The consumer price index, which measures what consumers pay for goods and services, <a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm">rose by 6.2 percent</a> from a year ago in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the quickest annual clip it’s risen since 1990. Over the course of the month, prices crept up by 0.9 percent. The data shows prices are up almost everywhere, including gasoline, energy, shelter, food, and new and used cars and trucks. Among the few price indexes to decline were airline fares and alcoholic beverages.</p> <p>October’s inflation numbers <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2021/11/10/business/news-business-stock-market">came in above economists’ expectations</a>, and to politicians, the media, and other observers, they are a bit jarring — especially those who have been arguing that much of the current inflation in the economy is temporary.</p> <p>There are <a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/22435400/economy-unemployment-inflation">a lot of open questions</a> in the pandemic economy, including what’s going on with <a href="https://www.vox.com/22757240/global-supply-chain-management-shortage-covid">supply chains</a> and labor, and inflation remains an issue no one is quite sure how to solve. Regardless of what the experts say, for regular people, the economic landscape can be a little nerve-wracking, especially when it comes to prices. Inflation makes people feel bad about the economy, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/06/upshot/inflation-psychology-economy.html">even when there is plenty to feel good about</a>, too.</p> <p>I reached out to Claudia Sahm, a senior fellow at the Jain Family Institute and former Federal Reserve economist, to ask how to parse the latest inflation numbers. Sahm isn’t an inflation hawk and has for quite some time pushed back against fearmongering on the issue, but she acknowledged that the October situation isn’t good.</p> <p>Wages aren’t broadly keeping up with inflation across all jobs, <a href="https://twitter.com/byHeatherLong/status/1458464805711400970">though they are in some sectors</a>, such as hospitality. However, Sahm notes, the economic situation — and pandemic situation — is much better for many people this year than it was last. She’s not hitting the panic button on prices, but she worries about the implications for the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/10/28/22748554/biden-budget-build-back-better-democrats-child-care-taxes">reconciliation bill</a> in Congress, and emphasizes that the Fed is paying attention to what’s going on.</p> <p>Our conversation, edited for length and clarity, follows.</p> <p><strong>So the October inflation numbers were not good.</strong></p> <p>Legitimately, October wasn’t a good month. Prices really across the board — with some exceptions — rose in October. The increase that we saw in total aggregate prices was as large as the big increases that we saw early in the summer.</p> <p>What had happened between, say, June and October was that the level of prices had stayed high. We haven’t seen outright declines in prices, but inflation had been stepping down, which has been the forecast, the expectation, of Fed officials, the White House, myself personally, a lot of other professional forecasters. It hasn’t stepped down as fast — the peak earlier this year was much higher than I certainly expected. But this is a step backward. Inflation moved back up, so that means off of the high level of prices, we have moved up, again, pretty notably.</p> <p>CPI is over 6 percent year-over-year. This is not good news.</p> <p><strong>Is there a broader context you think people should pay attention to here?</strong></p> <p><a href="https://stayathomemacro.substack.com/p/inflation-is-cooling-some-but-not">There’s a good, bad, and ugly of inflation</a>. There are good reasons that inflation comes down, like we start working out supply chains and labor shortages. And there are bad reasons, and my bad case is Covid-19 comes back and we get scared and pull back. Prices are supply and demand. We look at lower inflation and say, “Yay, this is a good thing.” But lower jobs is bad.</p> <p>Covid has been the root of all evil through this entire pandemic. It comes, slows some, then it comes back with a surge, then it slows, then it comes back with a surge. Just like you can’t draw a straight line through the Covid cases and the Covid deaths, you cannot draw a straight line through the economic recovery. We are pointed in the right direction, particularly after the vaccines came out, but not every month.</p> <p><strong>How does this tie into what else is happening in the economy?</strong></p> <p>People are exhausted. Workers, businesses are exhausted. We are moving in the right direction, but it is painful. One of the pain points is higher prices. Another big pain point is not having a job. Inflation is felt more broadly because the unemployment rate is back down. It’s still above where it was before, but we’re really moving on that.</p> <p>Far fewer people are in these dire straits than were happening earlier in the pandemic, but everybody is facing some price increases. But the vast majority of Americans fill up their cars with gas, and they notice it’s a lot higher. It’s a much more diffuse pain, it’s not as severe, but people hate inflation. Inflation has both a reality and a life of its own. It’s just like taxes — taxes are something you pay, but they’re something we all just broadly hate.</p> <p>Both because jobs have been coming back and also because the federal government put out a lot of economic relief, people — especially those who are at the very top of the heap — have, on average, enough money to pay those extra prices in the majority of cases.</p> <p>When you look at the price at the pump, you think, “Ahhh,” and you’re staring at it. But if you’re staring at it, that means you put gas in your car. And if you look at the consumption numbers adjusted for inflation, these things have gone up, and that is because people have more money. Prices are rising, but their bank accounts rose faster.</p> <p>There’s a hardship, but when you look back to the Great Recession, where there was much less relief, real consumer spending did not rise like we are seeing this year, and inflation, frankly, it was rising faster. That was worse. Inflation wasn’t as high as it is now, but at the end of the day, it’s, “Can you eat?” not just, “How much did you pay for the food?”</p> <p><strong>How does all the government support during the pandemic play into this?</strong></p> <p>Low-income people spend a bigger part of their budget on necessities, food, on housing, on medical care. It puts a squeeze on them if you hold income constant. If you have more money in their pocket, it really does help. The stimulus, for a family of four, it was almost 20 percent of median family income in all three rounds. Low-income people have more in liquid assets, more in wealth, than they have had in a very, very long time.</p> <p>It’s amazing, because we are coming out of the worst recession in living memory, a massive global pandemic.</p> <p>Inflation, it’s not good, I’m not sugarcoating it, but there was a lot of good done. The American Rescue Plan [<a href="https://www.vox.com/22310269/third-stimulus-update-2021-package">the stimulus bill signed into law by President Joe Biden earlier this year</a>] was the absolute best policy, particularly in an environment with high inflation. You look across the world in developed countries, they all have inflation. And you know <a href="https://www.vox.com/22348364/united-states-stimulus-covid-coronavirus">what the difference is in the United States?</a> We put thousands and thousands of dollars in people’s pockets at the beginning of the year.</p> <p>It really made a big difference to people’s lives. The fact that higher inflation is eating away at the wealthy, the lenders, the bond market people, I have no sympathy. I loved the packing plant that was complaining in the news because they couldn’t hire enough workers. Maybe if you hadn’t <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/28/world/meatpacking-workers-covid-cases-deaths.html">killed so many of your workers</a>, right?</p> <p>Inflation is too high, it’s causing problems, but it’s not our biggest problem right now. Covid is.</p> <p>There’s a trope about inflation that the Fed’s behind the curve; inflation hawks say the same thing over and over again. We are not living the same moment as the ’70s, the ’50s. There was no global pandemic. If that’s how you’re going to approach this, something is missing in the model, and frankly, it just wastes so much time. There are real problems, there are real solutions, and they are going to tank that legislation in Congress.</p> <p>The inflation debate has already clearly cut down the size of the kids, care, and climate legislation, as I like to call the [<a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/10/28/22748554/biden-budget-build-back-better-democrats-child-care-taxes">Build Back Better reconciliation bill</a>]. The midterms are coming. We will not have a united government; they will not pass anything like this again for years. And inflation will come back down. Even if it stays above 2 percent, you’re going to say climate change, children, education, and housing are less important?</p> <p>It’s not about inflation, it’s about the size of government. It’s not about the taxes, it’s not about the debt, it’s about how much government should be active in people’s lives. I feel like economists are the accessories to the murder of good long-term policy, and it’s frustrating.</p> <p>It’s a tough line to walk, because I don’t want to pretend like prices haven’t risen a lot. I believe in fact.</p> <p><strong>So I hear you that there are a lot of other things going on in the economy, but people really do feel inflation. People see the numbers — my mom’s been complaining her Christmas baking is more expensive this year. How worried should normal people be? Because a lot of them are starting to feel a little panicked.</strong></p> <p>You learn a lot as a policy expert if you engage with people, and I listen because I cannot tell someone how to feel. I cannot tell someone what should you expect in the future. I can’t help but bring in, “Hey, but what about those checks? And it’s the pandemic, and the supply chain, and prices fell for a long time, we’ll get back there. Gas prices will go down.” You can bring facts into it, but I can’t tell them how to feel.</p> <p>And, frankly, what we are seeing, I’m not surprised. If you told me inflation would be 6 percent year-over-year right now and asked me what the <a href="http://www.sca.isr.umich.edu/">University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey</a> would look like, I could tell you. People really dislike inflation. There are a lot of people, particularly older people, who have lived through periods of high inflation where it got out of control and policymakers were asleep at the wheel. They haven’t seen what Jay Powell’s Fed is going to do.</p> <p>Most people don’t trust government at all, and a lot of people don’t trust facts either; we have lots of problems here. If a politician you look up to or a talking head on the news tells you that you should be freaking out about inflation, it’s going to get worse.</p> <p>I do worry about an inflation spiral, but in the Michigan survey, they ask about the buying conditions for large household durable goods, big household purchases. It is at its lowest level, at least going back decades and decades.</p> <p>That made me so relieved, because when I’m thinking about this inflation spiral, in countries that experience high and rising inflation, what fuels that spiral is that people look at the high and rising prices, and you ask them if they should buy now, and they say yes, because prices will be higher. If I ask you if it’s a good time to buy and you say no, that means you’re not going to start hoarding things and creating more price pressure.</p> <p>People hear inflation hawks, and that’s where the fear goes — in the economy, the trust in government, the questions about where we are headed. But for me, there’s this disconnect, because yes, prices are bad, but we helped a lot of families.</p> <p>It’s a tough time right now. Precarious is too strong of a word, because I don’t see the makings of an inflation spiral — vaccines are coming out, Covid is coming down. But some days it’s a good day, and some days it’s a bad day. And sometimes it’s really good — half a million jobs really good. Other times, it’s inflation rising almost a percent month-over-month — really bad.</p> <p><strong>As people head into the holidays and start to look at prices, a lot of them are just going to think, what in the world is going on? What would you say to normal people on how to think about inflation right now as they go to the store or the gas station or shop for presents? To people who worry Christmas is going to be a lot more expensive?</strong></p> <p>There are families who are going to be able to buy Christmas presents and who have been able to fill their gas tanks and get to work this year who in 2019 couldn’t. We have gotten a lot of money to a lot of people who have very little. We have gotten money, frankly, to 80 percent of households. That’s good; universal makes it more popular.</p> <p>We have millions of families that are supported by people who do not work at a living wage, who do not have financial security, they had nothing in the bank. A lot of them have something in the bank now. Their kids are going to have Christmas.</p> <p>The other thing is that we get to see our family for Christmas this year. I would have paid a lot of money last year to go have Christmas with my family, and there was no amount of money I could pay, because my parents are older and they weren’t vaccinated.</p> <p>If I have to buy my son one Gameboy game instead of two this year, well, Grandma’s going to get to watch him open it, and that’s worth a lot. A lot of people are going to have a better Christmas than last year, and there are going to be a lot of families who have a better Christmas in 2021 than they did in 2019.</p> <p>You can’t look at these bank account numbers that are higher now and say, “Oh, it’s going to be the worst Christmas ever.” For people who lost loved ones because they died of Covid in 2021, that’s going to be a really bad Christmas. Amazon’s favorite electric vehicle company is now worth more than Ford or GM

The electric pickup and SUV manufacturer priced its stock at $78 a share and raised about $12 billion, which the company plans to spend on boosting production and designing more vehicle models. While that price set Rivian’s valuation at around $70 billion, the carmaker’s market capitalization surged above <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/10/amazon-backed-ev-start-up-rivian-set-to-go-public-.html">$90 billion</a>, after the stock started trading at nearly $107 a share on its first day.</p> <p>Rivian <a href="https://rivian.com/newsroom/article/rivian-announces-confidential-submission-of-draft-registration-statement">filed</a> for an initial public offering <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-08-27/rivian-is-said-to-file-for-ipo-seek-about-80-billion-valuation?sref=Wg6QzS2e">back in August</a>. The 12-year-old company, which is backed by Amazon and considered one of the biggest threats to Tesla, is now one of the world’s most valuable automakers, worth <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/rivian-ipo-ev-trucker-maker-stock-valuation-51630101566">billions more than Ford or GM</a> — even though, as of October, it’s only delivered 156 vehicles. Rivian’s first vehicle, a $73,000 pickup, started shipping in September, and a second model, a $75,500 seven-seat SUV, is supposed to be released next year.</p> <p>Rivian’s timing is good in some ways. This summer, President Joe Biden issued an executive order that called for electric vehicles to account for half of all new auto sales in the United States <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/05/biden-pushes-for-evs-to-make-up-40percent-or-more-of-us-auto-sales-by-2030.html">by 2030</a>, and a growing number of legacy automakers have committed to shifting their production <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/gm-go-all-electric-2035-phase-out-gas-diesel-engines-n1256055">to electric vehicles</a> in the next two decades.</p> <p>But as the world continues to struggle with the pandemic, Rivian faces some serious challenges. A shortage of semiconductors has caused delays and production halts across the auto industry. There also aren’t that <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/24/cnbc-road-test-the-us-ev-charging-network-isnt-ready-for-your-family-road-trip-let-alone-the-expected-wave-of-new-cars.html">many charging stations</a> available across the US, leaving some potential EV buyers worried about running out of juice.</p> <p>“It’s a big deal that more public infrastructure is available,” Jeremy Michalek, an engineering and public policy professor at Carnegie Mellon, told Recode in August. “Probably the first priority is making sure there are enough fast chargers available on highway rest stops so that you can take your vehicle wherever you want to go.”</p> <p>Like Tesla, Rivian is <a href="https://rivian.com/support/article/where-can-i-charge">selling home chargers</a> and <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/21/rivian-is-installing-ev-chargers-in-tennessees-56-state-parks/">developing a nationwide charging network</a>. The company plans to have 10,000 stations available by the end of 2023, many of which will be in remote areas. Also as Tesla has done, Rivian is taking an AI-focused approach to its vehicles. Rivian has invested heavily in its hands-free, semi-autonomous driving technology with <a href="https://rivian.com/support/article/what-features-are-included-in-rivian-driver">a suite of features called Driver+</a>, which sounds a lot like Tesla’s Autopilot. In a lawsuit, Tesla even accused Rivian of stealing its trade secrets after <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-30/tesla-can-move-forward-with-trade-secret-suit-against-rivian?sref=Wg6QzS2e">hiring its former employees</a>.</p> <p>But a big difference between Rivian and Tesla is the type of electric vehicles the two companies are selling. After being founded in 2009 and remaining secretive for years, Rivian announced in 2018 that its first models would be a pickup truck and an SUV meant for <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/news/39291/rivian-is-not-messing-around-with-its-off-road-tests-of-the-r1t">off-road driving</a>. That’s a notable difference from Tesla, which has focused primarily on selling cars and crossovers. (Tesla announced its first pickup truck, the Cybertruck, in 2019, but deliveries have been <a href="https://electrek.co/2021/08/07/tesla-confirms-cybertruck-electric-pickup-delay-2022/">delayed until 2022</a>.)</p> <p>Rivian is also appealing to commercial clients, including its own influential backers. After participating in two funding rounds for the startup, Amazon last year <a data-cdata="{"rewritten_url":"https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/transportation/introducing-amazons-first-custom-electric-delivery-vehicle?ascsubtag=[]vx[p]22413324[m]m-placeholder[s]s-placeholder[t]w[c]c-placeholder[r]r-placeholder[d]d-placeholder","subtag_max_length":99,"subtag_delim_length":2,"subtag_key":"ascsubtag","subtag_data":{"ascsubtag":"[]vx[p]22413324[m]m-placeholder[s]s-placeholder[t]w[c]c-placeholder[r]r-placeholder[d]d-placeholder"},"encode_subtag":false}" has-subtag="true" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/transportation/introducing-amazons-first-custom-electric-delivery-vehicle">committed to buying 100,000 electric delivery vehicles</a> from Rivian by 2030. Former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and three other passengers on Blue Origin’s first flight with humans aboard even <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/21/22587043/jeff-bezos-space-blue-origin-rivian-electric-truck">rode in a Rivian SUV</a> to the launch site.</p> <p>Ford, which has its own plans to release an electric version of its popular F-150 pickup truck next year, has also invested more than <a href="https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2019/04/24/rivian-500-million-investment-ford.html">half a billion dollars</a> into the electric car startup.</p> <p>There’s no doubt that Biden is enthusiastic about electric vehicles. The Biden administration has already started to electrify the <a href="https://www.eenews.net/articles/federal-fleet-electrification-faces-delays/">entire federal fleet of cars, SUVs, and trucks</a>, <a href="https://www.vox.com/22364340/electric-cars-biden-infrastructure-plan-evs-chargers">more than 600,000 vehicles</a>. Meanwhile, the White House and congressional Democrats are pushing for the Postal Service to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/05/09/usps-trucks-electric-biden/">purchase as many as 165,000 electric delivery trucks</a>. The <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/11/08/fact-sheet-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-deal-boosts-clean-energy-jobs-strengthens-resilience-and-advances-environmental-justice/">most recent version</a> of Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure proposal includes $7.5 billion to build a national network of electric vehicle chargers. (Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a38135245/tesla-opens-superchargers-to-other-brands-pilot/">begun</a> to open Tesla Superchargers to <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/07/20/elon-musk-tesla-to-open-up-global-charging-network-to-other-evs-later-this-year/">electric vehicles from other manufacturers</a>.)</p> <p>But while EVs are getting more popular globally, the US faces slower growth than China or Europe. Last year, global electric vehicle sales <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/global-ev-outlook-2021?mode=overview">grew by 41 percent</a>, according to the International Energy Agency, an intergovernmental energy policy advising organization. While sales of electric vehicles in the US trail behind those in China and Europe, sales of hybrid cars <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2021/08/06/electric-vehicle-ev-hybrid-car/">are growing</a>, a sign that more consumers could warm to electric vehicles down the line.</p> <p>In a <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/06/07/todays-electric-vehicle-market-slow-growth-in-u-s-faster-in-china-europe/">recent Pew survey</a>, some 7 percent of Americans said they owned an electric or hybrid vehicle, and 39 percent said they’d consider buying one. The higher price of EVs <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/09/business/energy-environment/biden-electric-cars-cost.html">is certainly a contributing factor</a> to the slower adoption rate in the US. How Netflix’s adaptation of Passing reflects the novel’s time — and ours

<p>Halfway through Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel <em>Passing</em>, the book’s protagonist, Irene Redfield, is feeling uneasy. She has just had a tense argument with her husband. Now, watching him fiddle with his hat, Irene is worrying: “Was she never to be free of it, that fear which crouched, always, deep down within her, stealing away the sense of security, the feeling of permanence, from the life which she had so admirably arranged for them all, and desired so ardently to have remain as it was?”</p> <p>Larsen’s book is suffused with that sense of unease, the feeling that one wrong move might undo a life entirely, that the structures on which our families, routines, and even identities rest are precarious. And the new Netflix movie based on Larsen’s book, adapted for the screen by Rebecca Hall and starring Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, brings Larsen’s prose — unease and all — to vibrant, visual life.</p> <p>The story transitions seamlessly to the screen in part because the “passing” of the title refers primarily (though not exclusively) to its main characters’ ability, in a segregated society, to “pass” as white. The story centers on Irene (Thompson) and a childhood friend, Clare Kendry (Negga), with whom Irene unexpectedly reconnects one day at a whites-only hotel. Both women are Black, having parents or grandparents who were Black, but both are also light-skinned enough for white people of similar social class to assume otherwise.</p> <p>Irene normally spends her time in Black society in Harlem, and has married a successful Black doctor named Brian (André Holland), with whom she has two children. The couple have a daughter. And Clare has spent her adult life happily living the life she’s chosen, though her encounter with Irene awakens a kind of curiosity in her about the culture she so willingly left behind.</p> <p><em>Passing</em> was published just after World War I, at a time when American culture was changing rapidly, and in which the definitions of race, sexuality, and gender categories were in flux. There was a lot of anxiety in the US about people crossing “the color line.” White people who fancied themselves sophisticated might go to Harlem to encounter what they viewed as Black culture. (In fact, what they increasingly encountered was Black culture manufactured for their expectations — in essence, a tourist experience.)</p> <p>The novel isn’t only about race and about colorism, though it certainly <em>is</em> about that. It’s also about the myriad sorts of “passing” that its characters engage in — living in a social class or even conforming to gender stereotypes in which they don’t feel quite comfortable. That’s why, almost a century after it was first published, the book is often viewed as a groundbreaking novel of intersectionality: Clare and Irene are just as much beholden to their roles as wealthy women as they are to their racial identity, and those factors are inextricably linked.</p> <p>Larsen was intimately familiar with the world that Clare and Irene are navigating. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/obituaries/overlooked-nella-larsen.html">She was born</a> to a white Danish immigrant mother, with a father who was most likely Afro-Caribbean, though he disappeared from her life when she was young. Her mother married a white man and together they had a son, but family life was often fraught. When Larsen was still a child, her family had to move neighborhoods when they encountered discrimination — because of her.</p> <p>After attending Fisk University, an HCBU, Larsen married Elmer Imes, one of the first two Black Americans to hold a PhD in physics, and moved to Harlem. They became friends with figures like W.E.B. Du Bois and were part of the Harlem Renaissance. A few years after <em>Passing</em> was published, Larsen became the first Black woman to be awarded a Guggenheim fellowship. But soon after, her marriage fell apart, and though she kept writing, none of her further work was published. In 1942, her estranged husband died, and so the alimony stopped, and Larsen turned back to nursing to support herself. She died in 1964, at the age of 72.</p> <p>Given what happened to Larsen, it’s not hard to read Irene’s unease with her own life as a premonition, or perhaps descriptive of what Larsen was already feeling. But it’s also a wider sentiment, one that Rebecca Hall, in writing and directing the new film, understands.</p> <p>Hall’s grandfather was Black, and, as she’s said in interviews, spent his whole life passing for white. So <em>Passing</em> spoke to her as a novel, and she spent many years trying to get a film adaptation made. “It’s only really through this journey of making this movie, and spending so much time with this book, that I really uncovered that and understood it,” <a href="https://www.rogerebert.com/interviews/black-and-white-rebecca-hall-on-passing">she recently told an interviewer</a>. “I’ve found out the history of his family now, things that were obscured and erased. I’ve managed to get it back into my family’s life.” The movie, <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2021/10/passing-rebecca-hall-interview-1234674475/">she says</a>, also helped her mother come to terms with her own family’s identity.</p> <p>Yet Hall recognizes that while <em>Passing</em> is about race, it extends beyond one identity category — “intersectionality, and all these different aspects of women under the patriarchy, fluidity around sexual choices and boundaries, homosexuality and heterosexuality all come into play,” she said. “But [Larsen] didn’t know that she was writing some kind of intersectional tome.”</p> <p>Mostly, Larsen focused on the psychological effect that playing roles has on those who occupy them. And that effect is emphasized by <em>Passing</em>’s structure. It’s a short novel (the copy I read was 114 pages long), broken into three sections labeled “Encounter,” “Re-Encounter,” and “Finale.” As in a good play, each of <em>Passing</em>’s “acts” is built around the subtle and unspoken power dynamic between its main characters and the people around them, all trying to speak, act, dress, and look like whatever they believe the situation requires. And while we have access to Irene’s interior life, the other characters remain opaque. After all, “Blackness” and “whiteness,” as well as traditional roles associated with gender, sexuality, and social class, are constructs with a long history behind them. The people who live in the midst of them find themselves hemmed in by those constructs — some more than others. In the first scene of <em>Passing</em>, the image is lit so brightly that Negga’s and Thompson’s skin tones seem to shift and change, a visual metaphor for the theme the film is about to explore.</p> <p>The result is cool, elegant, and devastating, a film as tightly woven and plaintive as the source novel itself. It’s an artifact of its time, both 1929 and in 2021, when the questions around identity have morphed and shifted but are still relevant as ever.
