Prof. Linda Wastila Gives Testimony on Vaccine-Induced Myocarditis: “I am stunned when I hear people dismiss myocarditis as an acceptable side-effect,...

<p class="has-text-align-justify"><strong>Dr. Linda Wastila, Professor at the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Pharmacy, gave her testimony during a three-hour panel discussion hosted by U.S. Senator Ron Johnson on 3 November in Washington D.C. The expert panel included doctors and medical researchers who treat Covid injection injuries and they were joined by patients who have experienced adverse events to Covid injections.</strong></p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify"><a href="https://faculty.rx.umaryland.edu/lsimoni-wastila/">Prof. Wastila</a> has conducted policy and epidemiological research focusing on intended and unintended outcomes of clinical and policy interventions involving medications and their safety over the past 30 years.  She and several colleagues, including <a href="https://theexpose.uk/2021/11/05/bmj-editor-dr-peter-doshi-gives-evidence-to-expert-panel-on-medical-mandates-and-covid-injection-injuries/">Dr. Peter Doshi</a>, formed a group – Coalition Advocating for Adequately Licensed Medicines (“CAALM”) – and in June they submitted a <a href="https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/06/08/why-we-petitioned-the-fda-to-refrain-from-fully-approving-any-covid-19-vaccine-this-year/">petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”)</a> regarding the experimental Covid injections. </p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Their petition made several requests including: the FDA require manufacturers to submit data from completed Phase III trials; the FDA require a more thorough assessment of spike proteins produced in-situ by the body following vaccination and demand manufacturers complete proper biodistribution studies; and asked for data demonstrating a thorough investigation of all serious adverse events reported to pharmacovigilance systems.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">In her second statement Prof. Wastila spoke about the science of vaccine safety.  “Unless you are dealing with an inert substance every product has side-effects and the Covid-19 vaccines are no exception,” she said.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">“The timeline for noticing, researching and establishing harm is slow.  Take myocarditis. It took four months into Israel’s vaccination campaign to recognise this side effect – that’s despite the fact that myocarditis generally strikes within days of dosing, particularly the second dose.  So, people were experiencing these ‘side-effects’ for months before officials acknowledged the vaccines as cause.”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">“I am stunned when I hear people dismiss myocarditis as an acceptable side effect, especially for young people because myocarditis is a life threatening and a life disabling condition,” said Prof. Wastila.</p>

<h4><strong>United Kingdom (“UK”) response to Vaccine-Induced Myocarditis</strong></h4>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">In June, the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (“MHRA”) published a statement stating that myocarditis and pericarditis happen <a href="https://theexpose.uk/2021/07/10/what-have-they-done-uk-gov-release-23rd-report-on-adverse-reactions-to-the-covid-19-vaccines/">rarely in the general population</a>, and it is estimated that in the UK there are about 6 new cases of myocarditis per 100,000 patients per year and about 10 new cases of pericarditis per 100,000 patients per year. </p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">The MHRA’s statement continued: “There has been a recent increase in reporting of these events in particular with the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, with a consistent pattern of cases occurring more frequently in young males and shortly after the second dose of the vaccines. These reports are extremely rare, and the events are typically mild.”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">What is not clear is what the MHRA defines as a “patient.”  For example, are all Covid injection recipients classed as “patients”?</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Public Health England (“PHE”) <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-vaccination-myocarditis-and-pericarditis-information-for-healthcare-professionals/information-for-healthcare-professionals-on-myocarditis-and-pericarditis-following-covid-19-vaccination">published a statement</a> on 26 August 2021 regarding myocarditis / pericarditis following “Covid-19 vaccination” in which it clarifies a “patient” is a NHS or hospital admission. </p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">PHE’s statement recognises an association between Covid injections and myocarditis / pericarditis stating: “From analysis of UK and international data, there has been a signal of an increase of cases of myocarditis and pericarditis following vaccination with both Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.”</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Without so much as a hint that the PHE or any UK regulatory agencies were investigating myocarditis / pericarditis caused by Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna “vaccines,” PHE also rules out any possible investigation into AstraZeneca by concluding: “Given the extensive use of AZ vaccine in the UK programme, the cases reported after AZ vaccine are thought to reflect the expected background rate of these conditions.”  </p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">What is not clear is what “background rate” PHE is applying.  Does the calculation of the rate depend on identifying who are “patients” to use as the denominator? Are they comparing the myocarditis / pericarditis rates among NHS or hospital admissions from previous years to rates among all Covid injection recipients in 2021 – in other words <a href="https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/vaccinations">80-90% of the population</a> who, we hope, do not all become hospital admissions?</p>
<h4><strong>Additional Notes on United States Response to Vaccine-Induced Myocarditis</strong></h4>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">A FDA briefing document dated 26 October 2021 notes that Pfizer was seeking authorisation for their <a href="https://theexpose.uk/2021/11/01/pfizer-adds-ingredient-to-vaccine-for-kids-that-treats-heart-attacks/">Covid injection formula be modified for children</a> to include an ingredient that reduces the acidity of blood and is used to stabilise people who have suffered a heart attack.  Why would Pfizer adjust their formula for children?</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">On 25 June <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-june-25-2021">the FDA added a warning</a> to the Pfizer and Moderna Covid injections about possible links to myocarditis and pericarditis. Less than ten days earlier, the MHRA in the <a href="https://www.medicinesresources.nhs.uk/mhra-warns-about-myocarditis-and-pericarditis-with-moderna-and-pfizer-covid-19-vaccines-2.html">UK had quietly done the same</a>.</p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">In <a href="https://theexpose.uk/2021/10/06/report-younger-males-are-at-a-higher-risk-of-myocarditis-following-covid-19-vaccine-vaers-cases-are-just-the-tip-of-the-iceberg/">a previous article</a> we made reference to a report published on 1 October 2021 titled ‘<em>A Report on Myocarditis Adverse Events in the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) in Association with COVID-19 Injectable Biological Products</em>’ which stated:</p>

<p>“Within 8 weeks of the public offering of COVID-19 products to the 12-15-year-old age group, we found 19 times the expected number of myocarditis cases in the vaccination volunteers over background myocarditis rates for this age group.” </p>
</blockquote>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">This report has since been <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0146280621002267?v=s5">“temporarily removed” from ScienceDirect’s website</a> without explanation.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-justify">At the World Health Summit <a href="https://theexpose.uk/2021/11/06/bayer-pharmaceuticals-president-admits-mrna-vaccines-are-cell-and-gene-therapy-and-the-public-would-not-have-agreed-to-take-them-if-it-were-not-for-the-pandemic/">Stefan Oelrich, Bayer Pharmaceuticals President, boasted</a>, “we have many reasons to be proud of [life sciences] … I think unprecedented collaboration, transparency but also taking accountability for health across all different sectors and stakeholders.” </p>
<p class="has-text-align-justify">Oelrich could not be further from the truth to the extent that he is blatantly lying.  The pharmaceutical companies, governments, regulatory agencies and public health advisors are disregarding their duty of care towards the public.  We need to demand answers and until we get them stop injecting yourself with any of the gene therapy drugs, the so-called “vaccines.”</p>

<p><strong>In the spring of 2018, the world’s mountain of debt reached $250 trillion. Now, as 2021 draws to a close, global debt (both public and private sector) has comfortably surpassed the quarter of a quadrillion mark and is about to crash through $300 trillion (Source: <em>Global Debt Monitor/September 14<sup>th</sup>, 2021, IIF</em>).</strong></p>
<p><strong>What is most striking about this dismal fact is that the voices calling for debt to be reined in are far less audible than one might expect, and the concern that economists and bankers used to express at the uncontrollable rise in debt is less apparent now than it was three years ago. With all pretence to fiscal responsibility and accountability seemingly out the window, it is certainly pertinent to ask ‘What are governments, central bankers and the globalist elites up to?’.</strong></p>

<p>On October 12<sup>th</sup> this year, the US House of Representatives gave approval for the raising of the government’s borrowing limit to $28.9 trillion, thus warding off the potential danger of a federal default yet again. While the compliant mainstream media hailed this move as a sensible step that helped avert a crisis, no one was willing to highlight the fact that the absurd tax cuts given to big corporations and the very wealthy by Donald Trump in 2017 (under the so-called ‘Tax Cuts and Jobs Act’) was one of the key reasons why the government’s debt was increasing so precipitously. (Side note: The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was one of the largest ever transfers of wealth from the majority to the super-rich minority.)</p>
<p>In 2015, global debt was under $220 trillion (Source: <em>Institute of International Finance</em>). This means that in just six years, the world has seen an increase in total indebtedness of around 35%! Meanwhile, the global debt/GDP ratio is now around 360% (Source: <em>Bank for International Settlements</em>). While governments around the world continue to justify these obscene increases in debt by pointing to the support measures they introduced after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., furlough payments, new stimulus packages, support to businesses during lockdown, etc.), the numbers hide an irrefutable fact ― incessant money printing has become the norm around the world, and the pumping of most of this bubble-generating money into financial and stock markets has made a mockery of conventional asset valuation.</p>
<p>However, there is a deeper and far more sinister story behind the obvious manipulation of financial markets that’s taking place, namely the plan hatched by the elites who are rolling out the Great Reset to digitalise money completely and gradually phase out cash-based transactions. Given that global debt has now surpassed all manageable levels and is on course to crash the global economy, the technocrat fanatics/globalist elite/corporate oligarchy have begun to openly speak about digitalising all monetary transactions and utilising the tremendous advances in technology (especially Artificial Intelligence) to facilitate it.</p>
<p>However, what they talk about less frequently is the new global digital currency that will eventually be introduced to replace the fiat currencies of today, which have been hyperprinted into oblivion, and also the sweeteners that will be used―such as the introduction of universal basic income (purely in digital form)―to make these moves more palatable. While the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos 2020 did openly discuss the need for creating a ‘credible and trusted’ global digital currency, and Klaus Schwab—the founder of the WEF, whose 2010 report argued that democratically elected governments were no longer the “overwhelmingly dominant actors on the world stage”— has advocated for it in the clearest of terms, what these unabashed subverters of democratic governance are not divulging is that detailed plans on what sort of digital currency will be unleashed on the world—and in what manner—already exist, and the ground is already being prepared for its introduction before the current decade is out.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the mendacious mainstream media will never give a platform to those who point out that the gradual abolition of cash transactions is nothing more than a nefarious assault on human privacy and the ability of people to physically touch and protect their money. The ability to make minor transactions in cash is vitally important to safeguarding privacy and keeping the prying eyes of technocrats (and potentially intelligence services) away from what people want to buy and sell. Moreover, the eventual replacement of cash with purely digital payment systems will inevitably be accompanied by the introduction of a ‘social credit’ system—like in China—that can be used to penalise and punish members of the public who fail to conform to arbitrary rules.</p>
<p>This relentless march towards all-encompassing technology-based tyranny is the natural and inevitable endpoint of unfettered capitalism — the concentration of all the levers of control on society in the hands of the unelected, self-appointed doyens of the capitalist/oligarchic elite who, in collaboration with power-hungry fanatics of technocracy and a political class that has been almost completely bought over, will seek to bring their ultimate plan to fruition ― the transformation of the world into a single market controlled tightly from an obscure centre, and the transformation of all of the world’s workers into direct or indirect employees of a single global conglomerate with branches across the planet (without the right to union representation of course).</p>
<p>As things currently stand, it is difficult to hope that these diabolical plans can be scuppered. The awakening that is undoubtedly occurring in certain strata of society—both spiritual and cognitive—appears to be too slow to create a tidal wave of pushback and disobedience that can derail the meticulously laid out schedule of events that are leading to the end dream of the oligarchy/technocracy/globalism cabal.</p>
<p>However, all is not lost, and at times like this merely maintaining a sense of optimism and working at the grassroots level to institute disobedience are in themselves revolutionary acts, acts that can produce ripple effects and bring about unexpected victories. To quote Benjamin Franklin, rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God. Nevertheless, it is an inescapable fact that more time is needed for the awakening that’s occurring—particularly amongst the youth—to take hold and gather steam. If civil disobedience―a fundamental human right―can slow down the implementation of at least certain aspects of the aforementioned plans, we may be in with a chance to prevent absolute tyranny from being established and to finally dispose of the cancerous and destructive system called capitalism.     </p>
<p>As we continue seeing the world’s hedonistic billionaires compete over whose phallic-shaped rocket can take them fastest and furthest into space, let’s hope that enough human beings are accessing real news on alternative news channels and understanding the true nature of what’s going on around them. Perceptive and sentient people must not go along with these subversive plans for humanity. Do not become accomplices. Remove your money from banks, hold on to it in your homes, insist on using it for your daily purchases, and build communities of like-minded people who are committed to maintaining cash as an integral part of daily life. And for goodness’ sake, stop giving your votes to bought-off governments!</p>

Queensland, Australia, to Seize Savings, Homes, Driver’s Licenses of People with Unpaid Covid Fines

<p><strong>Australians have racked up so many fines for violating the government’s tyrannical Covid-19 vaccine mandates that the state of Queensland is now threatening drastic action against those who haven’t paid, including the loss of their bank accounts, homes, or driver’s licenses.</strong></p>
<p>As reported by <a href="https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/banks-raided-property-seized-licences-cancelled-in-covid-cost-recovery-20211027-p593kz.html" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/banks-raided-property-seized-licences-cancelled-in-covid-cost-recovery-20211027-p593kz.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brisbane Times</a>, Queensland, whose capital is Brisbane, has so far issued over 3,046 fines involving “255 individuals and businesses accused of flouting the rules during the coronavirus pandemic.” The fines total an astonishing $5.2 million (£3.8 million).</p>
<p>This is not surprising, however, due to the ridiculous rules that have been implemented. For example, Australians can face fines for being too far from home, outside of their permitted bubble, spending more than one hour outside, being caught without a mask even if you’re by yourself – you still get a ticket. Tickets are being handed out by police roaming the streets as well as at random checkpoints which have been set up on the roads. These checkpoints were allegedly introduced to assist in controlling the Covid pandemic and for contact tracing.</p>
<p>Additionally, those who are returning to Queensland face strict quarantine rules, whereby they are forced into quarantine and must pay hotel costs during the time they are held prisoner.</p>
<p>Vaccine passports were introduced in the form of digital QR codes that are scanned on an individual’s phone. The scans register your physical location, also meaning that the police have an easier time catching out those ‘violating’ Covid rules.</p>
<p>On top of this, the majority of Queenslanders were unemployed for months due to the pandemic, and as a result, the government is stuck with a mountain of unpaid tickets. Only about 56.4 percent of the fines have been or are in the process of being paid; 25.2 percent “were either under investigation or still open to payment without further action being taken.</p>
<p>The State Penalties Enforcement Register (SPER) has stepped up to deal with the remaining fines and is now undertaking ‘active enforcement’ on another 18.4 percent of fines, worth about $1 million (£740,000), which a spokesman said “may include garnishing bank accounts or wages, registering charges over property, or suspending driver licenses,” the paper reported.</p>
<p>This means that if you are caught breaking any covid rules, and either you wouldn’t or couldn’t pay the fine, you could now lose your house, savings, or, driving privileges.</p>
<p>“Queenslanders rightly expect travellers will pay for their hotel quarantine stays and not leave taxpayers to foot the bill,” a Queensland Health spokeswoman told the Times. </p>
<p><strong>With 2,045 significantly overdue hotel invoices (out of 44,350) totalling $5.7 million still unpaid, Queensland is turning to private debt collectors. Curiously, the Queensland Health spokeswoman “would not say how much commission the debt collectors stood to make under the arrangement, claiming it was commercial-in-confidence,” penned the Times.</strong></p>

<p><strong>The UK Medicine Regulator has responded to a Freedom of Information request demanding to know how many deaths have occurred in the past 20 years due to all vaccines, and their response has revealed that there have been over four times as many deaths in just ten months due to the Covid-19 injections.</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="https://theexpose.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/FOI-21-907-Response-1.pdf">request</a> was made via email to the Medicine and Healthcare product Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on the 6th August 2021 in which a Mr Anderson asked the MHRA the following questions –</p>
<ul>
<li>How many Deaths have there been from all Covid-19 vaccines?</li>
<li>Are there any other reporting AI system monitoring systems like the Yellow Card scheme?</li>
<li>Are Covid-19 Vaccines still in trials?</li>
<li>How many deaths has there been in last 20 years by previous Vaccines without Covid-19 Vaccines?</li>
<li>What happens if a there is a new vaccine or new drug? What process and monitoring do they go through?</li>
<li>What cut off point will the MHRA say a vaccine or drug is unsafe for humans?</li>
</ul>

<p>The MHRA of course <a href="https://theexpose.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/FOI-21-907-Response-1.pdf">responded</a> with the usual “we do not hold this information” as seen time and time again from Government departments, especially Public Health England who claim they do not hold the information for the number of people to have died within 28 days of having a Covid-19 vaccine when <a href="https://theexpose.uk/2021/08/25/5522-deaths-have-occurred-within-28-days-of-having-a-covid-19-vaccine-in-scotland-according-to-public-health-data/">Public Health Scotland have been perfectly capable of publishing the figures.</a></p>

<p>However, <a href="https://theexpose.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/FOI-21-907-Response-1.pdf">they did confirm</a> that they are using other epidemiological studies, anonymised GP-based electronic healthcare records and international experience to proactively monitor safety alongside the spontaneous reports received via the Yellow Card scheme.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://theexpose.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/FOI-21-907-Response-1.pdf">MHRA also confirmed</a> that the current Covid-19 vaccines on offer in the United Kingdom are only under a temporary authorisation and that these authorisations do not constitute a marketing authorisation.</p>

<p>In <a href="https://theexpose.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/FOI-21-907-Response-1.pdf">answer to the question</a> asked on the number of deaths due to all other vaccines in the past twenty years <a href="https://theexpose.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/FOI-21-907-Response-1.pdf">the MHRA provided</a> the usual robotic response about how great the Covid-19 vaccines are and how they are the “single most effective treatment for preventing serious illness due to Covid-19” but what they did not do is say that they “do not hold this information”.</p>
<p>Instead <a href="https://theexpose.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/FOI-21-907-Response-1.pdf">they revealed that they had received a total of 404</a> reported adverse reactions to all available vaccines (excluding the Covid-19 injections) associated with a fatal outcome between the 1st January 2001 and the 25th August 2021 – a time frame of 20 years and 8 months.</p>

<p>But how does that fare against the number of reported adverse reactions to all temporarily authorised Covid-19 vaccines associated with a fatal outcome? Well, since <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1031316/Pfizer_CORRECT.pdf">the Pfizer jab</a> was rolled out in December 2020 there have been <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1031316/Pfizer_CORRECT.pdf">577 reported deaths</a>, meaning that in just 10 months, this “vaccine” alone outnumbers the deaths due to all other vaccines in the past 20 years.</p>

<p>Therefore, up to the 28th October 2021 there have been a grand total of 1,739 deaths reported to the MHRA as adverse reactions to all available Covid-19 vaccines in the United Kingdom since the beginning of the year.</p>
<p>Meaning there have been over four times as many deaths in just 10 months due to the Covid-19 vaccines than there have been due to every other available vaccine since the year 2001, and now they are administering this experimental treatment to children who are at zero risk of even suffering serious disease due to the alleged Covid-19 virus.</p>

The coalition of rebel forces taking on Ethiopia’s government, explained

<p>After a year of conflict, displacement, and growing humanitarian crises, Ethiopia’s civil war entered a new phase this week after a newly formed coalition of Tigrayan rebels and other minority groups <a href="https://www.npr.org/2021/11/07/1051940127/rebels-are-closing-in-on-ethiopias-capital-its-collapse-could-bring-regional-cha">began their advance</a> on the federal capital of Addis Ababa.</p>
<p>The civil war, which <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/ethiopia-tigray-conflict-explained.html">began in November</a> last year, has already <a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-united-nations-ethiopia-320c6cfa7434efe62a92faa03560a59f">killed thousands and displaced millions</a> more; the UN says there have been brutal human rights violations on all sides, including a federal blockade of badly needed humanitarian aid into the northern Tigray region.</p>
<p>Now, the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front, or TPLF, has responded by marching on the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, along with a number of other rebel groups that have joined with the TPLF in opposition to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. While reports vary regarding their progress toward the capital, rebel forces may be as close as about 100 miles away, a spokesperson for the Oromo Liberation Army <a href="https://www.cnn.com/africa/live-news/ethiopia-conflict-updates-11-5-intl/index.html">told CNN</a>.</p>
<p>TPLF representatives in Washington, DC, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/nine-ethiopian-groups-form-anti-government-alliance-2021-11-05/">announced the new coalition</a>, called the United Front of Ethiopian Federalist and Confederalist Forces, on Friday, and made clear its intention to oust Abiy.</p>
<p>“Time is running out for him,” Berhane Gebrekristos, a former Ethiopian ambassador to the US and a TPLF leader, said during the announcement.</p>
<p>The coalition represents a new chapter in the conflict; previously, the TPLF, while powerful, has nonetheless been a minority force fighting against the federal government, but the advance on Addis Ababa marks a potential shift in the conflict’s momentum.</p>
<p>In addition to the TPLF, there are eight other groups in the new coalition; of those, the OLA is among the most prominent.</p>
<p>The OLA represents the Oromo ethnic group, of which Abiy himself is a member. Previously, Abiy has enjoyed the support of the Oromo and Amhara people; however, <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/08/15/ethiopia-opposition-figures-held-without-charge">a spate of arrests and murders</a> of Oromo leaders and activists, in addition to economic and political marginalization, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-entertainment-lifestyle-ethiopia-addis-ababa-d14f85b3a4bd8e4d9f0153b35ade444f">have turned many Oromo against Abiy</a>.</p>
<p>The seven other factions in the opposition coalition represent other ethnic groups, of which there are about <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/05/world/africa/ethiopia-tigray-eight-groups.html">80 in Ethiopia</a>. Upon his election, Abiy declared his government would distribute resources and power equally; however, the coalition <a href="https://www.cnn.com/africa/live-news/ethiopia-conflict-updates-11-5-intl/index.html">announced</a> their alliance on Friday “in response to the scores of crises facing the country” under his rule.</p>
<p>“The next step will be to organize ourselves and totally dismantle the existing government, either by force or by negotiation ... then insert a transitional government,” Mahamud Ugas Muhumed, a representative of the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/nine-ethiopian-groups-form-anti-government-alliance-2021-11-05/">Somali State Resistance</a>, one of the coalition groups, said.</p>
<p>But while the alliance brings together other minority groups, all of which have militant factions, it’s yet unclear how effective the coalition will be in its push to depose Abiy.</p>
<p>“I don’t think it will have that much of an impact,” Gedion Timothewos, Ethiopia’s attorney general and justice minister, said during an online news conference Friday, calling the coalition a “publicity stunt.”</p>
<p>Some external experts, however, disagree. William Davison, a senior analyst with the International Crisis Group, told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/05/world/africa/ethiopia-tigray-eight-groups.html">the New York Times</a> this week that the coalition indicates “that the political tides are changing” in Ethiopia.</p>
<p>If nothing else, the coalition’s advance toward Addis Ababa appears to be causing anxiety in the capital. <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/11/05/africa/ethiopia-conflict-opposition-coalition-abiy-ahmed-intl/index.html">OLA forces report</a> that they are about 100 miles from Addis Ababa, while other sources put the figure at <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/11/06/ethiopia-addis-ababa-tplf/">200 miles</a>. The coalition also says it has been able to take strategic cities on the way. While the Abiy government says the rebels are exaggerating their victories, the government has also called on retired soldiers to pick up their weapons and fight the advancing forces.</p>
<p>“Dying for Ethiopia is a duty for all of us,” Abiy <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ethiopia-tigray-news-abiy-ahmed-war-asks-citizens-to-defend-government/">said last week</a>.</p>
<p>The past month has seen further escalation of the civil war between the Tigrayan forces and Abiy’s administration, which <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/11/28/21724049/ethiopia-captured-tigray-capital-mekele-tplf">started a year ago</a> when TPLF forces launched what they described as a preemptive strike against a federal military base in Tigray.</p>
<p>Although the Tigrayan people are a minority ethnic group in Ethiopia, with a population of roughly <a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-united-nations-only-on-ap-famine-kenya-ef9fe79cc0cf35917fd190b6e9bd0f46">6 million</a> concentrated in the northern state of Tigray, <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/who-are-the-tigray-fighters-and-why-is-ethiopia-at-war-with-them/a-59736874">they emerged as a powerful force</a> in the 1970s against Ethiopia’s Marxist military dictatorship, after years of marginalization.</p>
<p>Eventually, the <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/who-are-the-tigray-fighters-and-why-is-ethiopia-at-war-with-them/a-59736874">TPLF dominated</a> the coalition Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, which overthrew the dictatorship in 1991. Tigrayan politicians <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/ethiopia-tigray-conflict-explained.html#link-4cc9b906">led the government</a> and dominated the coalition for nearly 30 years, overseeing economic growth despite famine and conflict in the region.</p>
<p>But the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/ethiopia-tigray-conflict-explained.html">TPLF-led government</a> was also known for torturing detainees and harsh crackdowns on dissent; by the time Abiy emerged on the political scene, anti-government protests had forced the previous prime minister to step down.</p>
<p>In the space of just three years, Abiy purged Tigrayan leadership from the federal government, essentially stripping the group of much of its former political power at a national level.</p>
<p>However, the state of Tigray is still under TPLF control, despite Abiy’s best efforts to centralize power. The TPLF’s resistance to the Abiy government — most notably by holding regional parliamentary elections in September 2020, despite Abiy’s decision to postpone them throughout the country — quickly spiraled into a full-blown conflict.</p>
<p>After <a href="https://www.vox.com/2020/11/28/21724049/ethiopia-captured-tigray-capital-mekele-tplf">early victories</a> for Ethiopia’s national armed forces, the TPLF has been able to push back, recapturing the Tigrayan capital <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/mekelle-under-our-control-spokesperson-tigrays-former-rulers-says-2021-06-28/">Mekele in June</a>. Now, the group is gaining ground — as well as political and military support — with the new coalition.</p>
<p>But the recent developments have come at great cost for <a href="https://www.hrw.org/tag/tigray-conflict">Tigray</a>, as thousands have died in the conflict and 2 million have been displaced, both internally and externally.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.ohchr.org/Documents/Countries/ET/OHCHR-EHRC-Tigray-Report.pdf">A November 3 report from the UN</a> — the most comprehensive thus far in the conflict — also detailed numerous human rights abuses on both sides of the conflict. <a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-united-nations-ethiopia-320c6cfa7434efe62a92faa03560a59f">According to Michelle Bachelet</a>, the UN high commissioner for human rights, Ethiopian national forces, along with their Eritrean allies, were responsible for the bulk of those atrocities.</p>
<p>The war has also created a humanitarian crisis: Aid to Tigray slowed to a trickle in July due to a government blockade which prevented trucks with food, medical supplies, and fuel from entering the region. In September, UN humanitarian aid chief Martin Griffiths warned Tigray was on the verge of famine and called the crisis “<a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-health-united-nations-only-on-ap-famine-a2b1639797c2a31973ce12985d82b865">a stain on our conscience</a>” in an interview with the Associated Press.</p>
<p>Shortly thereafter, the Ethiopian government moved to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-united-nations-ethiopia-antonio-guterres-abiy-ahmed-f5c9015472474462081a8fd769e5b18e">expel seven UN officials</a> from the country, accusing them of “meddling” in the nation’s affairs and diverting humanitarian aid to TPLF forces. The government had <a href="https://www.vox.com/2021/10/2/22705570/ethiopia-expel-un-officials-famine-civil-war">previously ordered</a> the Dutch contingent of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), as well as the Norwegian Refugee Council, to cease operations.</p>
<p>In October, Ethiopian national defense forces began <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/18/africa/ethiopia-tigray-mekelle-airstrikes-intl/index.html">conducting airstrikes</a> in Mekele, which have <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/three-children-killed-strike-ethiopias-mekelle-un-2021-10-19/">killed multiple children</a>. While Abiy’s government has claimed it was <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/ethiopia-air-strike-hits-tigray-tplf-says-3-civilians-killed-govt-says-factory-2021-10-28/">targeting military installations</a>, some witnesses say the airstrikes actually hit civilian targets. The central government <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/ethiopia-air-strike-hits-tigray-tplf-says-3-civilians-killed-govt-says-factory-2021-10-28/">denied</a> intentionally targeting civilians, according to Reuters, and communications blackouts in the region <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/ethiopia-air-strike-hits-tigray-tplf-says-3-civilians-killed-govt-says-factory-2021-10-28/">make verification difficult</a>.</p>
<p>So far, Western leaders have made <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/05/26/statement-by-president-joe-biden-on-the-crisis-in-ethiopia/">statements</a> calling for an end to hostilities and warning of the dire humanitarian situation, but now are beginning to back up their admonitions with real consequences for Ethiopia’s central government.</p>
<p>Notably, the US suspended Ethiopia from the <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/11/02/a-message-to-the-congress-on-the-termination-of-the-designation-of-the-federal-democratic-republic-of-ethiopia-ethiopia-the-republic-of-guinea-guinea-and-the-republic-of-mali-mali-as-beneficia/">African Growth and Opportunity Act</a>, or AGOA, on Tuesday “for gross violations of internationally recognized human rights.”</p>
<p>AGOA allows certain countries to export goods duty-free to the US, and suspending Ethiopia’s participation will be a serious economic blow; last year, Ethiopia shipped $245 million worth of goods to the US under AGOA, according to <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2021/11/2/us-suspends-duty-free-access-to-ethiopia-over-human-rights-abuses">Al Jazeera</a> — nearly half all its exports to the US.</p>
<p>President Joe Biden’s administration has also sent Jeffrey Feltman, its Horn of Africa envoy and a veteran diplomat, to try and negotiate a deescalation to the conflict after Abiy <a href="https://apnews.com/article/africa-kenya-ethiopia-abiy-ahmed-7340b987e8677740764d9e4cf9d51e9b">declared a six-month state of emergency</a> earlier this month. However, Feltman told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/sense-duty-puts-veteran-us-envoy-middle-ethiopia-conflict-2021-11-05/">Reuters</a>, “We’re not getting much response, the military logic is still prevailing.”</p>
<p>Biden has <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/06/biden-ethiopia-diplomacy-519804">threatened further sanctions</a> against Ethiopian leadership, and a <a href="https://www.foreign.senate.gov/press/ranking/release/risch-menendez-coons-introduce-new-sanctions-bill-targeting-parties-involved-in-conflict-in-tigray">bipartisan group of senators</a> has put forward legislation specifically targeting the actors prolonging and benefiting from the conflict, but as <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/11/06/biden-ethiopia-diplomacy-519804">Politico’s Nahal Toosi</a> points out, both sides of the conflict seem unwilling to budge.</p>
<p>“The problem is that you have multiple objects that heretofore have proven largely unmovable,” Toosi quotes an unnamed State Department official as saying about the situation. “It remains to be seen whether the shifting dynamic will cause at least one of those objects to show a little more flexibility.”</p>
